EBBETT HOLDEN NOT NEW BUT NEARLY SAVE THOUSANDS!! SEE PAGE 28
It’s springtime
A time to feel alive and relish in new
beginnings. Cleaning the house as we
come into spring brings a feeling of
satisfaction.
Brushing away the
cobwebs that all the
extra light reveals,
airing out the pillows and
duvet and giving the house
a thorough clean after the
long winter months. The
longer days bring with
them more daylight to
be outside in the garden,
walking with friends or
playing social sport. Coming
into November, it’s
great to think about ways
to freshen the body and
mind, as well as your cozy
homes.
With the longer days
coming into summer, it’s
easy to stay up and be
outside enjoying the extra
daylight. Remember to still
aim for eight hours sleep
each night; incorporating
healthy sleep hygiene such
as block out curtains and a
quiet space are helpful in
maintaining adequate rest.
Adult deficiency in Vitamin
D can affect bone
health and can contribute
to osteopenia and osteoporosis
leading to an increased
risk of bone fracture.
Try to get in the direct
sunlight and get it on your
exposed skin to boost Vitamin
D levels for the following
winter. In addition to
Vitamin D, resistance training
is vital to help reduce
risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Picking up a
few cans in the cupboard
and doing some light resistance
exercise will help
build muscle and maintain
bone density. If you
aren’t sure of technique,
find an appropriate health
professional to guide you.
If you haven’t heard already
about the LifeFit
programme at the UniRec,
then check it out as a great
option for exercising with
other seniors in a fun and
supportive environment.
Do you like hiking or
short day walks? Hopefully
you’ve been ticking away
over the winter months at
your exercise and physical
activity goals. Spring is a
great time to enjoy some
hikes up local mountains
such as Te Aroha, Karioi or
Maungatautari, although it
can be a bit hit and miss
with the weather at this
time of year. If you are in
Hamilton there are beautiful
trails along the river.
The Hakarimatas offer a
short, high intensity climb
for those up for it, and the
Waikato River Trails hidden
away out past Karapiro are
tranquil and secluded if
you want to get away from
the crowds.
If you’ve been doing
a regular exercise programme
at home or in the
gym, this is a great time to
add variety and keep your
interest up by having your
programme refreshed.
Book in with an exercise
professional and discuss
your goals leading up to
Christmas and the New
Year. Prioritise what you
want to work on and as
mentioned, make sure you
get your technique evaluated
on exercises you have
already been doing that
you’re not sure about.
I also recommend taking
time out for yourself and
doing something that refreshes
your mind, whether
that’s catching up with a
friend, climbing that mountain
on a sunny day or investing
in a float at one
of the many float facilities
popping up in Waikato.
Grab your journal and write
down things you are grateful
for and take daily small
steps toward a more positive
mindset in various areas
of your life, to make a
fresh start for your mind.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Merry Christmas everyone
I hope Santa is good to you all.
BY ROGER HENNEBRY
HAMILTON GREY POWER
PRESIDENT
I
had in mind for this report
to analyse the benefits
for us now that we
have a new government but
I think it’s anyone’s guess as
we don't really know what
policies have been traded
up or down in this coalition.
Time will tell. All I know
is Winston had promised us
a free doctor’s visit and a
one-off eye test but whether
you need a community
services card to access
these isn't clear. The only
thing for sure is we won’t
be getting our promised
$20 a week tax cut in April!
I suppose that's politics.
Grey Power has had a
good year and I would like
to thank our volunteers for
all the hard work and commitment
they have put
in, going above the norm
when we have been shorthanded.
Also thanks to my committee
and Neben Morris
Media for printing our
magazines.
Jane and I are looking
forward to the Christmas
break when we will
Roger Hennebry
be spending some time at
the Mount and some time
with our grandchildren and
the family at the farm near
Whakatane.
Again Seasons Greetings
to you all. Regards Roger.
Health and welfare
for your reflection
1. Elder abuse discussions
have recognised the issue,
sadly, and possible
solutions have been
identified
(a) An extension of Child
Youth and Family legislation
to include abused
older people and the
provision of emergency
accommodation for the
abused person.
(b) However it is addressed,
an idealistic approach is
needed by all government
departments and
non-government organisations,
that deal
with this, based on a
social investment approach.
(c) This is a very sensitive
issue and often the
older person will need
help and support to
take action.
(d) If you are aware, be
courageous, offer help
and take some action
and find out the cost
involved with the case
i.e. is there State funded
provision for this person.
2. The issue of dental care
was raised, but the
priority appears to be on
children and adolescents.
(a) However WINZ will
fund essential treatment
for pain or infection
up to $300 per annum
through a Special
Needs Grant.
(b) Some emergency dental
care is funded by
DHBs for low income
adults again for pain
and infection only.
(c) While this is emergency
treatment, costs of
dental maintenance are
very expensive, often
compromised by other
needs and so leads to
other greater health
problems being neglected.
This is an issue
that needs addressing.
3. Elective surgery
(delayed)
(a) The question was raised
here as to whether
the delayed treatment
costs outweigh the cost
of personal care, home
help and accidents because
of physical impairment,
a cost benefit
ratio to look at.
(b) A further question of interest
is the application
of the national priority
test a criteria for points
to access surgery.
(c) Are these applied equitably
throughout New
Zealand in all DHBs?
(d) Is funding for the aged
care ring fenced for
protection?
4. As New Zealand is short
of ophthalmic surgeons,
suitably qualified nurses
are being upskilled to do
the preliminary injections
etc. leaving the surgeon
to only do the actual
surgery. This is an innovative
and positive step
towards relieving waiting
lists, demonstrating
collaborative care and
definitely contributing to
quality of life.
Are you considering moving
into a retirement village?
There are two main types of Village and it
is advised that you should check out the
differences between them very carefully before
you purchase. The comments which follow
are a brief summary only.
BY JIM HIGBY
HAMILTON GREY POWER
ASSOCIATION
1 Registered Retirement
Village. These are usually
owned and operated
by companies who are
running them as a business.
When you buy into
these villages you buy a
“Licence to Occupy” and
you do own your unit.
This licence can be sold
when you move out of
the village but, depending
on the terms in the
“Occupational Rights
Agreement”, you may
have to pay a “Deferred
Management Fee” ranging
from 20 to 30 percent
of the original purchase
price. In many agreements
the selling value
is not the current market
value but the original
price that you paid.
NEW MRI CT ULTRASOUND SCANNER OPENING X-RAY CT IN BONE OCTOBER DENSITY 2016
Registered Retirement
Villages operate under
the Retirement Villages
Act and there is normally
an onsite manager appointed
by the company
who owns the village.
There is usually a Code
of Practice for dealing
with issues that may
arise. Registered Villages
often provide special
care facilities which may
be required as we get
older. The daily operational
costs are covered
by the levies that you are
required to pay but rates
and electricity are likely
to be your own cost.
2. Unregistered Villages,
sometimes referred to
a Lifestyle. These villages
operate under the
Unit Titles Act and you
own your unit freehold.
When you buy into one
of these villages you become
a member of the
Body Corporate. The
day to day management
of the village is through
the Owners’ Committee.
The majority of these
villages also have an onsite
caretaker who looks
after the common property
and, in most Villages,
the garden areas
around the units. Some
of the management
functions are contracted
to a Body Corporate
manager, e.g. Collection
of levies, documentation
for meetings etc. There
are “Operational Rules”,
required under the Unit
Titles Act, which cover
day-to-day procedures.
When you sell your unit
it is at current market
value, there is no Deferred
Management Fee.
Before purchasing a unit
in a village, please obtain
legal advice as there are
several issues that need
to be considered. The
Grey Power Federation
has a Policy document
on Retirement Villages. If
there are any issues, then
these can be referred to
Grey Power and the Grey
Power Federation Villages
Committee can advocate
on your behalf. Please
Special days to celebrate in
January and February
New Year – January 1
World Laughter Day -
January 10
World Laughter Day was
created by Dr Madan Kataria
a family doctor from
India. He said that a person’s
facial expressions
can have a huge effect on
their emotions.
The celebration of
World Laughter Day is a
positive drive for world
peace and is intended
to build up a global consciousness
of friendship
through laughter.
It is now celebrated
world-wide in more than
105 countries that have
formed the Laughter Yoga
Movement. Groups of
people gather together
both in and out of doors to
laugh. So if you are feeling
down and need a boost
get together with some
friends and have a good
laugh on January 10.
And if this does not
bring you some happiness
then you need to wait
with anticipation for:
The National Hugging
Day - January 21
This is an annual event
dedicated to hugging.
It was created by Kevin
Zaborney who felt that
after Christmas festivities
and New Year parties
there was a gap before
Valentine’s Day. A
lot of people around him
seemed down in spirit
during this interval and
often did not like to show
emotions in public. So he
started ‘The National Hugging
Day’ with little hope
of it taking off, but it did
and people started to hug
their friends and family.
He does however suggest
that you make sure to ask
a person first if you are
not sure that they will accept
this behaviour.
Auckland Anniversary
Day - January 29
A time to gather with
friends and family either
at home or back at the
beach, sailing, swimming
and playing beach games
with children and grandchildren.
Waitangi Day - February 6
As we know this day celebrates
the signing of the
Waitangi Treaty in 1840 at
the home of James Busby
in Waitangi. Many people
go to Waitangi to watch
the celebrations and to
join in the family festivities
that surround the day and
to honour this time in New
Zealand’s history.
Valentine’s Day -
February 14
Also called ‘St Valentine’s
Day’ is an annual holiday in
many countries but unfortunately
not New Zealand.
This day became associated
with romantic love
within the circle of Geoffrey
Chaucer (a poet in
the middle ages) during
the 14th Century, when the
tradition of courtly love
flourished. Later in 18th
Century Europe a tradition
of presenting a loved one
with flowers, confectionary
and cards eventuated
to show love to a person.
Many days in March to celebrate
ahead, watch for
the next magazine.
MY CHRISTMAS
LION – A TRUE STORY
POEM BY JACK THOMAS
It was to be a quiet Christmas
With my three young boys
Until a knock on the door
Shook me to the core.
On the doorstep was a friend
With a young lion on a lead
He said please look after Leo my lion
For a week while I am in Sydney
Reluctantly I agreed as
it looked friendly indeed.
Have you food for his feed ?
No, he will eat anything you see.
I stroked Leo and he purred.
His coat was so clean and sheen.
Then he lay under the Christmas tree
as my friend went on his way.
We let Leo roam in the back yard.
The fences were high enough.
I said, “Don’t annoy him and
keep shut the gate so he won’t escape.
Leo didn’t eat much, just some meat.
Never saw him pee or do poo.
Maybe he did it in secret.
Not sure what lions usually do.
He was locked in the house at night.
One morning I woke and got a big fright.
He was on the bed asleep by my side.
Snoring loudly with his back against mine.
On Boxing Day the boys called, “He’s gone.
Went through a hole in the back fence”.
Forgot there was one behind the hedge.
Shall I phone the Police? No, I won’t.
I rushed from the house and began to search.
As I ran down the street a boy shouted out,
“There is a dangerous lion at the beach.
You had better watch out”.
We reach 75 and we say to ourselves “Why
do I need a medical or driving test to continue
driving, I’m a good driver?”
Well the law says
we do. So you go
for your medical
and you may pass but if you
don’t then you will need to
have a driving test.
Well life has changed
since you took your driving
test many years ago. There
are many more cars on the
road and possibly changes
in the road rules that you
may not be aware of or are
not sure how to handle confidently.
The round-a-bouts
are bigger and have more
lanes branching off them so
which lane should you be in
to turn off correctly without
hitting another car?
If you are a member
of the AA then you are
eligible for the AA Senior
Driver programme. This is a
free member benefit with a
professional AA Driving Instructor.
A friendly AA driving
instructor will meet you at
your home or at a designated
pickup point and the relaxed
session will take place
in your own car.
The one hour session
consists of three
components:
1. 15 minutes to ensure your
car is set up correctly for
you.
2. 30 minute drive with the
instructor on a route of
your choice. You can
even select a particular
part of driving that you
would like help with,
for example driving on
a motorway or at night
or the round-a-bouts as
mentioned above.
3. After the drive, there will
be a 15 minute review
which will be confidential
between you and
the instructor.
The AA Senior Driver
coaching session is the
perfect preparation if your
doctor is requiring you to
pass an On-Road Safety
Test to renew your licence.
Even if you do pass the
medical it could be helpful
to take this Senior Driver
Programme to give you
peace of mind that you
are as capable and safe
as you think you are on
the busy roads of today.
It may stop some of the
family moaning that you
are too slow or cut corners
or don’t understand
the rules.
To find out more about
Senior Driver and to book
a free session call 0800
223 748, or go to aa.co.nz/
senior-driver.
People were running away scared.
Leo came up to me and just purred.
“Come home with me you bad boy”.
He walked home with me at his side.
A man said, “I have called the police.
You will be arrested for having a pet lion”.
“It is not my lion. It belongs to a friend.
He is not a danger. He is very tame”.
When we got home, Leo made a fuss of me.
I put on his lead and tied it to a chain.
“I will make sure you don’t escape again”.
I waited for the Police to come and complain.
I suddenly woke up and realised it was all a dream.
I never found out if the Police did complain.
I enjoyed having a lion with me for a while.
It made my Christmas seem so worthwhile.
Legal capacity
When you make or revoke a legal document,
eg a will or enduring power of attorney, you
have to be mentally capable at the time of
signing, otherwise the document will not be valid.
What does “mentally
capable”
mean, for the
purposes of making a will
or relating to enduring
powers of attorney?
Capacity to Make a Will
If you are mentally capable
of making a will you are
said to have testamentary
capacity.
At the time of signing the
will you must be of sound
mind, memory and understanding,
ie you must understand
the nature of the
document you are signing,
be free of any condition
causing a loss of reason
and judgement, and know
and approve the contents
of the will, both with regard
to knowing the extent of
the property of which you
are disposing and how your
property will be divided between
the beneficiaries.
On instruction to prepare
your will and when you sign
it, your lawyer will need to
be satisfied that you have
testamentary capacity; your
instructions are freely given
and you understand the effect
of the will.
Just because a client is elderly,
has a degree of mental
impairment, or demonstrates
some unusual behavioural
traits, the lawyer cannot assume
that that client lacks
testamentary capacity.
Harkness Henry has a team of lawyers
specializing in providing advice about
family trusts, wills and enduring powers
of attorney.
Our specialist lawyers are committed to listening
to you and understanding your needs. We
want to use our expertise to help you achieve
your goals. Whether you need a new will,
want to appoint an attorney or are considering
establishing a family trust, contact any member
of our team for advice; we’re here to help.
16 Hamilton greypower Magazine – December 2017
If your lawyer has concerns
about your testamentary
capacity, he or she is
entitled to make further inquiries,
eg by consulting an
appropriate medical professional.
Capacity and Enduring
Powers of Attorney
If you are the person who
makes an enduring power
of attorney (“EPA”) you are
called the “donor”.
As for wills, it is the capacity
of the donor to grant
and revoke the EPA at the
time of signing the document,
which is relevant.
EPAs differ from ordinary
powers of attorney because
they continue to be effective
and are not automatically revoked
if the donor becomes
mentally incapable.
In relation to property
you, as donor, are mentally
incapable if you are not
wholly competent to manage
your own affairs in relation
to your property.
In relation to personal
care and welfare, you are
mentally incapable if you
lack capacity to:
• Make decisions in relation
to your personal
care and welfare; and
• Understand the nature
of decisions about your
personal care and welfare;
and
• Foresee the consequences
of decisions
about your personal
care and welfare; and
• Communicate decisions
about your personal
care and welfare.
If your EPA is designed to
come into effect only if you
become mentally incapable,
the assessment of mental
capacity must be made by a
professional health practitioner
who is qualified to make
the assessment. Neither
your lawyer nor other lay
person may determine this.
If you want to cancel one
or both of your EPAs, you
must also have the mental
capacity to revoke. This
means that you must be
able to understand the nature
and effect of the revocation,
but you don’t necessarily
have to have the
competence to manage
your property or affairs, or
the capacity to make decisions
regarding your personal
care and welfare.
The problem with this is
that, if you do revoke your
EPAs, but lack the capacity
to make new ones, someone
else may have to apply
to the Court for orders
to be appointed to be your
property manager and/or
welfare guardian in place of
the EPAs which have been
revoked.
Do be aware that if you
are a trustee of a trust and
become mentally incapable,
your attorney under an enduring
power of attorney
cannot sign documents for
you as a trustee. An EPA in
relation to property is not
a deed of delegation of the
powers of a trustee.
If it is not possible to remove
or replace an incapacitated
trustee under the
terms of the trust or the
Trustee Act 1956, then it is
necessary to apply to the
Court for orders to remove
or replace an incapable
trustee, or to transfer land.
If you are an elderly trustee
of a trust, it may be wise
for you to retire to avoid the
possibility of a difficult situation
arising if you become
mentally incapable.
Concluding comments
It isn’t a pleasant thought
to contemplate the possibility
of loss of one’s mental
capacity, but it is an issue
you should not ignore as you
age.
Make sure that you have
made your will and have enduring
powers of attorney in
place while you are mentally
capable, to avoid the possibility
of having their validity
challenged on the grounds
that you lacked capacity
when you signed them.
If you are a trustee of a
trust, be aware of the possible
implications for the
trust if you lose your capacity
while still a trustee.
Your lawyer can advise
you.

300ml bottle of cream
2 tbsp castor sugar
125 g dark chocolate
15 g butter
2 L carton of vanilla ice cream
1 tsp vanilla essence
2 tsp cocoa
60 g slivered almonds
60 g ginger biscuits
BY DAWN
Age-related macular
degeneration
is a growing problem
in New Zealand. Total
prevalence of this disease
is expected to increase to
206,908 sufferers by 2018.
This has a major impact on
the quality of life and independence
of New Zealand’s
increasing ageing population.
Riskfactors include:
1) Age
2) Genetic and
environmental factors
i.e. family history
3) Smoking
4) Obesity
5) Blood pressure
6) High cholesterol
7) Poor diet
8) Lifestyle
It is the leading cause of
severe vision loss and left
untreated sufferers become
functionally blind within
two years.
Vision loss relates to the
central area of the eye that
provides sharp vision and
is used for seeing in detail.
Consequently reading, driving
and recognising faces
becomes more difficult.
Peripheral vision (the
outer area of the eyes) will
still function.
Treatments can vary, but
early detection is a key
factor therefore:
1) Regular eye checks
2) Maintaining good health
through diet and
exercise
3) Monitoring and
maintenance of blood
pressure and cholesterol
These are all essential for
the avoidance of this debilitating
disease.
It is important for us all
to aim to be as heathy and
functional as we can to
maintain quality and enjoyment
of life.
METHOD
Line the base of a 20cm springform cake tin with foil.
Combine ginger and brandy, mix well and stand for
10 mins. Whip cream and sugar until thick. Fold in
ginger and brandy. Spread mixture over base of cake
tin. Put in freezer. Melt chopped chocolate and butter
in microwave, cool slightly. Combine half softened
ice cream and vanilla. Add chocolate mixture. Stir in
cocoa. Mix well. Spread over frozen cream layer. Put
in freezer. Spread remaining ice cream over chocolate
layer. Microwave almonds until lightly golden. Crush
ginger biscuits. Combine and press firmly over frozen
mixture.Freeze the cake. This can be made over two
days. Serve with fruit salad. Liked by young and old, a
cake without fruit.
Once again thank you
During the last term of
a Minister of the Crown. I
am proud of the achievements
of the 5th National
to Hamilton’s exciting
progress and buoyant
mood in recent years.
Despite the challenging
economic conditions we
faced, it was a steady period
With Christmas fast approaching
we wish everyone
a safe end to the year
you and best wishes.
my electorate houses are
being built at a rapid rate,
the new government honours
National’s commitment
to provide major
infrastructure funding to
facilitate the construction
of more than 8000 new
homes in the long-awaited
Peacocke subdivision.
I have long argued that
Hamilton’s growth needs
more balance, and the
Peacocke development
will stimulate much-needed
new schools, health
services, retail activity
and job creation in the
south-west of Hamilton. I
will keep pushing for it to
proceed, along with the
Southern Links roading
of the Waikato Expressway.
Christmas is fast approaching.
I thank local
The long life of Doris Ratcliffe
Born September 8 1918 – now 99 years old
This lovely chatty
lady was born in a
little village called
Normanton Springs, near
Sheffield in South Yorkshire
and regularly walks
to venues to meet friends
and to join in conversations
about many aspects
of interest to her and with
others.
The daughter of the late
George and Mary Rodgers
who married in 1904.
Her father was a coalminer
and later a newsagent
from one of the many village
shops set up in the
UK to sell newspapers and
confectionery.
Doris had one brother
Stanley who was five
years older than her and
joined the army as did
many young men between
the two wars. They went
to the local village school
until she was 14 years old.
One of the teachers gave
her shorthand typing lessons
and from here she
went to the Commercial
College. This was considered
a very good education
for a girl in those
days. Her first job was
as a typist and she earnt
the magnificent sum of 12
shillings and six pence a
week.
During World War 2
many women volunteered
to help in the production
of weapons, machinery
and even planes. Doris
was one of these wonderful
‘Land Girls’ as they
were called. In 1941 she
went to work at ‘ Avro’
the British camouflaged
factory that made the famous
Lancaster Bomber.
Over 700 of these aircraft
were made there and Doris
was one of the inspectors
who with a special
hammer shaped stamp
would mark the aircraft
parts when satisfactory
and ready to have the
Rolls Royce engine installed
in them.
In 1945 she married
Edward Ratcliffe after he
was demobbed from The
Royal Airforce at the end
of the 2nd World war. Edward
was part of the special
signals core and he
spent time in both Egypt
and Russia and was lucky
enough to get out of Russia
before the fatal German
attempted onslaught
there.
They had one daughter
Kathleen in 1947.
On the August 13 1964
the family emigrated to
New Zealand on the Italian
ship ’ Castel Felice’
and Doris was employed
at Maori Affairs in Palmerston
North where the
family lived for 20 years.
After Edward retired
they moved to Australia
for three years and then
Edward decided that he
would like to visit “home”
as he called it, which they
did and he died there in
2001.
So Doris decided to
return to New Zealand
where her daughter was
living in Hamilton and she
has remained here ever
since. Now she has two
grandchildren and one
great grandchild to enjoy.
A lucky, healthy lady
who still cooks her
own meals, has her hair
permed regularly and
looks fabulous as per the
photo taken on her 99th
birthday week.
Doris has many hobbies
and interests which
include reading, walking
and every morning she
does the crossword from
the local daily newspaper.
Doris is a member of
Grey Power and enjoys
meeting other members
on a Monday morning for
tea, biscuits and a chat.
She also belongs to Age
Concern and the St John’s
Methodist Church all a
contribution and part of
her total social network.
This is a lady who has
remained active, alert and
has NEVER been in hospital
and still remains in
good health enjoying life
to the full.
Well done Doris and
we all look forward to celebrating
your 100th birthday
next September.
TIPS
JANUARY
1. Make sure you water your plants round the
roots, rather than the whole plant.
2. You can still sew lettuce seeds.
3. Feed all green plant with liquid fertiliser.
Gather a bucket of seaweed if you at the
beach.
4. Spray pansies with warm water as they don’t
like intense heat or extreme cold.
FEBRUARY:
1. Tidy up time. Deadhead roses and flowers to
encourage repeat flowering.
2. To rid fungi on your plants – use a spray of
half milk-half water.
3. This is the time to put in your order for new
roses to plant in autumn.
4. A great mulch for your roses is pea straw.
MARCH:
1. Plant bubs for spring shows
2. Clear the vegie garden and plant autumn
vegies; cabbage; broccoli; cauliflower.
3. Take cuttings from geraniums, succulents
and fuchsias.
4. Time to plant hedges – sasanqua camellia or
Griselinia, various sizes.
Start your next compost bin with fallen leaves;
grass clippings; kitchen scraps and shredded
prunings. Cover and turn with a fork every
couple of weeks.
The Duke
EBBETT HOLDEN NOT NEW BUT NEARLY SAVE THOUSANDS!! SEE PAGE 28
Living to 96 before retiring has been an
achievement while walking behind your wife
for 70 Years.
Who am I talking
about? If
you haven’t
guessed, it is Prince Philip
Duke of Edinburgh. So a
short story of his unusual
life deserves a mention
this quarter.
Prince Philip was born
on June 10 1921 at Mon Repos,
Corfu in Greece. And
his title was Prince Philip
of Greece and Denmark.
His father was Prince Andrew
of Greece and Denmark
and his mother was
Princess Alice of Battenberg.
His great great
grandmother was Queen
Victoria. He married his
third cousin Princess Elizabeth
(the current Queen
Elizabeth) on November
20 1947 at Westminster
Abbey, London.
He was educated in
France, Germany and
the United Kingdom and
joined the British Navy in
1939 at age 18 years. During
the 2nd World War he
served with the Mediterranean
and Pacific fleets.
He speaks English, German
and French but not
Danish or Greek which is
surprising? His father’s
neutrality policy was unacceptable
and he was
made to abdicate twice
and on the second time in
1922 forced into exile with
his family when Philip was
still a baby.
Before the announcement
of his engagement
to Princess Elizabeth in
July 1947, Philip abandoned
his Greek and Danish
royal titles and became
a naturalised British subject,
adopting the surname
‘Mountbatten’ from
his maternal grandparents.
Just before his wedding
in 1947 he was created
Baron Greenwich, Earl
of Merioneth and Duke of
Edinburgh by King George
the 6th. When Elizabeth
became Queen in 1952 he
left active military service,
having reached the rank
of commander and was
formally made a British
prince in 1957. Why was
he not made King Philip?
Because under British law
at the time, the women
automatically took on the
feminine version of their
husband’s titles, but the
same is not true for the
men, as with Prince Albert
and Queen Victoria.
Philip has always been
a keen sailor and sportsman
and he developed
the equestrian event of
‘carriage driving’. When
younger he played Polo
which he only gave up at
age 50 to commence with
‘carriage driving’ and to
this day can be seen behind
the reins of a horse
carriage in the grounds of
Windsor Great Park.
Other than a few medical
scares in the last few
years the Duke has kept to
a strict health regime. He
exercises regularly, eats
a moderate diet and has
huge willpower. His main
exercise is called the 5BX
plan which was designed
to improve the fitness of
recruits for the Royal Canadian
Air Force. It can be
carried out in a restricted
space, with no warm up or
equipment required, using
five basic exercises to
strengthen every muscle
in the body.
He is patron, president
or a member of more than
780 organisations but one
of his greatest achievements
was the introduction
of The Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award. This encourages
young people, regardless
of cultural, ethnic and socio-economic
background
to participate in exciting,
flexible and individually
tailored programmes, to
build skills, identity and
self- esteem. To be the
best they can regardless
of what life throws them.
The award was started in
Britain in 1956 for children
over the age of 14. With
the encouragement from
Lord Porritt and Sir Edmund
Hillary it became
known as the ‘The Duke of
Edinburgh Hillary Award’
in July 1963.
This award has been established
in more than 140
countries world- wide and
there are approximately
9000 registrations to the
different award level annually.
In New Zealand there
are currently 18,516 young
people involved in award
activities.
To work tirelessly until
you are 96 is a great
achievement in itself for
any one person and I think
we should just say “Well
done Duke of Edinburgh
you deserve your retirement
at last” regardless of
whether we are royalists
or not.
Memories are made of this
Congratulations to all those who were born in
the 1930s; 1940s; 1950s; 1960s or before.
How did we manage to
survive?
1. We survived being born
to mothers who smoked,
drank and lived in houses
made of asbestos.
2. Our mothers took aspirin,
ate blue cheese, raw
egg products, processed
meat, and tuna from a
can and didn’t get tested
for diabetes or cancer.
3. Then our next trauma, our
baby cots were covered
in bright coloured lead
based paint.
4. There were no childproof
lids on medicine bottles,
or doors on medicine
cabinets.
5. When we rode our bikes,
we had no helmets or
shoes.
6. We would ride in our parents’
cars with no seat
belts or air bags and
sometimes in the back of
a Ute.
7. We drank water from the
garden hose or a tap and
not from a bottle.
8. Takeaway food was limited
to fish and chips. No
pizza shops; McDonalds;
KFC or Subway.
9. Even though shops
closed at 6pm and didn’t
open at weekends, somehow
we didn’t starve to
death.
10. We often shared a soft
drink with friends from
one bottle and no-one
actually died from this.
11. We ate loads of biscuits;
white bread; and real butter
and drank soft drinks
with loads of sugar in it
and we were not overweight
or hyperactive.
12. We played outside with
building go-carts out of
old prams or fruit boxes
and ball bearings and
then ride down the hill,
only to find we did not
have brakes.
14. When we did get a bike
it had back pedal brakes,
but only for as long as
the chain stayed on.
15. We fell out of trees, got
cut, broke bones and
teeth and there were no
Cataract
EBBETT HOLDEN NOT NEW BUT NEARLY SAVE THOUSANDS!! SEE PAGE 28
Surgery
A CATARACT IS A GRADUAL CLOUDING
OF THE LENS INSIDE THE EYE. HAVING A
CATARACT CAN BE LIKE LOOKING THROUGH
A CLOUDY WINDOW AND MAY TAKE YOU
AWAY FROM DOING YOUR USUAL DAY-TO-
DAY ACTIVITIES.
Cataract development is a normal process
of aging. Cataracts can also be present at
birth, develop from injuries, certain diseases,
medications or long-term exposure to
sunlight.
As scary as cataracts might sound, modern
cataract surgery can usually restore vision
lost to cataracts — and can often reduce your
dependence on glasses as well.
When you are no longer able to see well enough to do the things you like to do,
cataract surgery should be considered. Thankfully cataract surgery is one of the safest
and most effective surgical procedures performed today. Surgery involves removing the
cataract and replacing it with an artificial lens. The procedure typically is performed on
an outpatient basis and does not require an overnight stay care facility. Recovery time is
quick, and vision can start to return to the affected eye within a few hours of surgery.
Hamilton Eye Clinic have a team of highly qualified and experienced
Ophthalmologists, with fellowship training in various subspecialities, providing
an Ophthalmic service of excellence.
