Prestons New World opens
MARSHLAND residents have
been hit by a “mini
economic boom” as the
Prestons New World
employing more than
100 staff opened its
doors on Friday.
Owner and grocer
Julia Spence said 80
per cent of the staff live
locally and opening day
sales had been excellent.
The recruitment
process for the supermarket
proved popular, with people
lined up outside the Marshland
Julia Spence
scouts hall where it was being
run. The store was opened
by Christchurch East MP
Poto Williams
A Ngai Tahu Property
(Prestons developer)
spokeswoman said it was
thrilled to see the supermarket
opening.
“As a part of the
original masterplan, it
was envisaged that the
development would
include a thriving retail
area anchored by a New World
supermarket, so to see it come
to fruition is very rewarding.”
“Residents we have spoken with
are very excited to have this facility
on their doorstep and they
are eagerly awaiting the (opening
of) further stores in the coming
months,” she said.
The store features some new
innovations such as a ‘vertical
wall’ in the produce department.
This refrigeration shelving system
allows fruit and vegetables
to be displayed with minimal
packaging to reduce wastage.
The system works by misting
the produce with water to keep
it fresh.
This feature has also been
rolled out in a few other
Christchurch stores, receiving
“some of the most positive
feedback from customers owners
have ever received,” said a
spokeswoman from Foodstuffs
New Zealand.
Ms Spence said she has been
living and breathing the grocery
business since she was a “nipper.”
“I went to my first Foodstuffs
conference with my parents
when I was six-weeks-old,” she
said.
Ms Spence bought her first
store when she was 24, a Four
Square in Akaroa.
HOT POOLS FEEDBACK
Development Christchurch Ltd
has analysed the feedback received
during the public engagement
on the New Brighton hot pools.
Consultation was open from late
October to early November. It has
contributed to the way the pools
are being designed, with strong
themes of wind protection, shelter,
seating, parking, and accessibility
coming through in the feedback.
Finalised concept designs are
expected in the coming months
when preparations will also begin
for consenting.
QE II MASTER PLAN
The city council is set to start
developing a master plan that will
the vision for the park and how it is
used . The city council project team
will ask immediate neighbours of
the park and the wider community
for input.
