Laniado
An oasis of care for all peoples
Laniado Hospital, Israel, was built as a life-affirming
response to the devastation of the Holocaust. It is a
testimony to the determination of one remarkable
survivor, Rabbi Yekutiel Halberstam, also known as the
‘Klausenberger Rebbe’.
He lost his wife, eleven children, and most of his devoted
followers in Auschwitz. He remained true to his faith and
principles throughout, serving as their source of hope
in their darkest hours. It was during the death march
to Dachau in 1945, when faced with what might have
been his final moment, that he made this promise: If he
survived the war, he would build a hospital.
Why a hospital? Because hospitals are predicated on
the value of every human. A place where people matter,
where kindness and compassion dictate every action.
Where life is celebrated and suffering is eased. 30 years
on, 8,400 babies are born in Laniado Hospital each year.
They are each a testament to the sanctity of life and to
the spirit of man. The hospital treats all people, Jews,
Christians and Muslims alike regardless of their belief or
ability to pay. This ethos is the life-blood of Laniado and
permeates every aspect of its operation. In fact, Laniado
is known as a ‘Centre for Healing’.
The Hospital Laniado is a full-scale medical campus
serving close to 450,000 people in the region with the
highest level of medical care. It also comprises a nursing
school, two geriatric-care centres, and a ground-breaking
medical research department.
Why Netanya? The Rabbi chose Netanya, on the
Northwestern coast, to build his dream. It is a mainly
secular town, with no previous connection to his
hassidic court. The reason was that Netanya is situated
at a point in Israel where less than 12 miles separate the
West Bank from the Mediterranean, making it vulnerable
to aggression and critical to the survival of the State
of Israel. A hospital built on love of humanity, he was
known to say, would provide the entire area with spiritual
protection from any possible threats.
OUR STRATEGY
Here in the UK, our donors feel a real connection to Laniado. They visit frequently, and gain tremendous
pleasure from seeing their giving make a real difference. They see peace and tranquility in its hallways,
dedication and compassion from its medical staff, and loyalty and commitment from its executive.
We share the Laniado vision, giving our supporters the opportunity to purchase specific equipment and
thereby partnering with Laniado’s medical team to help people and to change lives.
