BASIC EDUCATION<br />

SDG 4<br />

seeks to ensure access to equitable <strong>an</strong>d quality education<br />

through all stages <strong>of</strong> life. Apart from formal<br />

qualifications, SDG 4 also aims to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> youth<br />

<strong>an</strong>d adults hav<strong>in</strong>g relev<strong>an</strong>t skills for employment, decent jobs <strong>an</strong>d<br />

entrepreneurship. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, SDG 4 envisions <strong>the</strong> elim<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong><br />

gender <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>come disparities <strong>in</strong> access to education. The achievement<br />

<strong>of</strong> universal literacy <strong>an</strong>d numeracy <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong><br />

knowledge <strong>an</strong>d skills to promote susta<strong>in</strong>able development are also<br />

considered crucial for empower<strong>in</strong>g people to live <strong>in</strong>dependent,<br />

healthy <strong>an</strong>d susta<strong>in</strong>able lives. To accelerate <strong>progress</strong> with all <strong>the</strong>se<br />

objectives, SDG 4 calls for build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d upgrad<strong>in</strong>g educational facilities,<br />

exp<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> higher education scholarships available<br />

to develop<strong>in</strong>g countries <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> supply <strong>of</strong> qualified<br />

teachers.<br />
