SDG 5<br />

Indicators measur<strong>in</strong>g SDG 5 <strong>EU</strong> <strong>progress</strong>,<br />

short-term trends:<br />

aims at achiev<strong>in</strong>g gender equality by end<strong>in</strong>g all<br />

forms <strong>of</strong> discrim<strong>in</strong>ation, violence, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>y harmful<br />

practices aga<strong>in</strong>st women <strong>an</strong>d girls <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> public <strong>an</strong>d private spheres.<br />

It also recognises <strong>the</strong> import<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> universal access to sexual <strong>an</strong>d<br />

reproductive health <strong>an</strong>d reproductive rights for combat<strong>in</strong>g gender<br />

<strong>in</strong>equality. SDG 5 calls for equal rights, recognition <strong>an</strong>d value <strong>of</strong> unpaid<br />

care <strong>an</strong>d domestic work, <strong>an</strong>d access to economic <strong>an</strong>d natural<br />

resources, technology, basic <strong>an</strong>d f<strong>in</strong><strong>an</strong>cial services, <strong>an</strong>d property<br />

for women. It also calls for <strong>the</strong>ir full <strong>an</strong>d effective participation<br />

<strong>an</strong>d equal opportunities for leadership at all levels <strong>of</strong> political <strong>an</strong>d<br />

economic decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g. The adoption <strong>of</strong> sound policies <strong>an</strong>d<br />

legislation to promote gender equality are seen as essential for<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g gender discrim<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>an</strong>d foster<strong>in</strong>g women’s empowerment<br />

<strong>in</strong> all societal spheres, as is <strong>the</strong> enh<strong>an</strong>ced use <strong>of</strong> enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technologies.<br />

The <strong>EU</strong> focuses on monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>progress</strong> <strong>in</strong> abat<strong>in</strong>g gender-based violence<br />

<strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong> foster<strong>in</strong>g gender equality <strong>in</strong> education, employment<br />

<strong>an</strong>d leadership positions.<br />
