The school brought home six golds, a silver and a bronze during the two-day event at Lake Ruataniwha. Millie Knight and
the Rangi Ruru girls under-19 four (above) won silver. The results are a good platform to build on ahead of the South Island
Residents
may get
wish for
heavy
vehicle
restrictions
• By Julia Evans
THE LOCAL residents’ association
may get its wish of having heavy
vehicles restricted from some
residential Fendalton roads.
Based on “conversations and
advice” from city council chief executive
Karleen Edwards and a city
council staff report which is going
to the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board, some
heavy vehicle restriction is likely
around the Glandovey Rd area, city
councillor Raf Manji said.
But he said it would not be sensible
to start “slapping bans” on all
streets around Glandovey, Idris and
Straven Rds.
“We have to think about the
impact it would have . . . and be
reasonable,” he said.
The Glandovey, Idris and Straven
Residents’ Association has been
trying to get heavy vehicles off Idris
and Glandovey Rds since the intersection
was upgraded in 2013.
It is particularly concerned a
cyclist or pedestrian will be injured
or killed.
The area has been used as a collector
route by heavy vehicles following
the earthquakes.
THERE’S ONE nice, happy ending story
on page 7 today.
Hank, the border collie cross we
featured over Christmas has found a
home.
Hank was on our front page promoting
the Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust’s 2018 calendar. He wasn’t in it
– only canines that have been rehomed make the cut.
Hank had been at Dogwatch since October, and the people
who run the deserving organisation needed a family with the
patience to take him – Hank has a few quirks.
That’s not uncommon in dogs that end up in the pound;
they’ve usually been pushed from pillar to post before they get
there.
Chapel surprise for St Margaret’s
• By Julia Evans
AFTER 20 years without, St
Margaret’s College has a new
chapel.
And the building’s
connection to the school is
almost 90-years-old.
Waiau’s Satterthwaite family
moved a chapel from their farm
to the Merivale college grounds
in the early hours of Wednesday
morning, as a gift to departing
executive principal Gillian
Simpson.
“My mother-in-law, Diana
Satterthwaite, went to St
Margaret’s and she’s 90 now
. . . there’s a lot of history,”
chapel owner Gina
Satterthwaite (nee Gough) said.
Before the chapel was moved
to Waiau, it was the local
church in Rotherham, where
Diana Satterthwaite grew up,
she said.
Mrs Satterthwaite said there
had been a girl from her family,
or her husband’s family, at St
Margaret’s every decade since
her mother-in-law began.
“Literally, people in the
family from five-years-old to
90-years-old have been a part
of the school,” she said. That
included herself, her daughters,
her mother and aunts.
The Waiau chapel was also
where she and her husband
were married.
“But the main reason is that
it’s just nice to know that it’s
going to be enjoyed
. . . it’s so important to me
that St Margaret’s gave me the
opportunity to help like this,”
she said.
The college has been without
a chapel for more than 20 years.
One of Mrs Simpson’s goals was
to get a chapel back on school
grounds before she left at the
end of term two.
“I have been looking for a
small chapel for 10 years and
since the major rebuild we had
put the project on the backburner,”
she said.
But the school organised the
chapel to be moved without
Mrs Simpson’s knowledge; she
didn’t know until it arrived.
“This was a complete surprise
RELOCATION:
The chapel
spent more
than an hour
on the back
of two trucks
driving from
Waiau to St
Margaret’s
College on
Papanui Rd.
and presented to me as a fait
accompli,” Mrs Simpson said.
The building had to be split
in half and loaded onto two
separate trucks before being
reassembled on site.
She said it was an “immense
honour” to see her dream
become a reality right at the end
of her tenure.
It will be renamed Te Whare
Hauora (The House of Wellbeing).
about the
issues he
plans to
tackle in the
coming year.
Plus that big
news from the Beehive
HAPPY NEW year.
I had a great break over summer
with my family – I hope you
managed to as well.
It’s been an intense few months
settling in as your new MP.
I am always surprised by the
many and varied issues people
come to me with.
Two pubs have asked for my
help with disruption caused by
road works (I am helping one by
writing this in the bar).
More seriously, it is really
important that we minimise the
disruption to local businesses and
residents as rebuild and other
work continues – communities
can’t be put on hold for construction.
I am also determined to work
with the city council and others
to effectively address the issue
of street-based sex workers in St
Albans.
The Ombudsman’s Office has
said it will investigate whether
the approach of the city council
to the matter is appropriate. We
need a solution which is fair to
the residents as well as these
workers.
Transport is also critical, especially
for north Christchurch.
You may have seen the road
cones on Cranford St indicating
work on the Northern Corridor –
so avoid that route if you can.
This will be great for people
travelling to or from north of
Christchurch, however, the council
will no doubt have to consider
steps to avoid congestion around
Bealey Ave.
Helping people with problems
with Government or other agencies
is an important part of my
role.
I am getting lots of inquiries
over EQC and insurance issues,
but also inquiries about education,
immigration, city council
issues, financial hardship, accommodation
and many more.
There are a lot of people who
need a hand in navigating how to
address these issues. I am really
PLANNING: Duncan Webb
said one of the issues he
will stay on top of this year is
traffic impact on the north of
the city.
lucky to also have two awesome
people assisting me with this
work, Sonya and Nicolasa.
Lastly, as I write this, I have
received a text from my boss –
the Prime Minister, who is letting
MPs know that she is having a
baby.
A baby is always fantastic news
– and what a great demonstration
of the fact that work and babies
do mix.
She is, of course, lucky that
will give him some hints on how
BEFORE AND AFTER: Photos taken before and after plants
were stolen show how barren the scented garden has become.
Readers respond to the
article regarding a spate of
floral thefts at St Albans’
Abberley Park
Mary-ann Thorne – There
is someone in Christchurch who
is starting a garden. Between the
plants stolen out of the Smile
Dial garden in New Brighton,
the St Albans garden and all
the new plantings stolen out
of the new garden beds along
Worcester St, it is the only thing
that makes any sense. I was not
aware of this happening until
late last year when someone stole
my bird bath in the middle of
the day, right off the front lawn.
When I spoke to other people in
the neighbourhood they told me
about this sort of thing happening.
So now we just have to keep
an eye out for a new white and
pink garden with fruit trees and
a bird bath. Some people suck.
Simon Hunter – Don’t make
me rant.
Building robot to beat beach mess
• By Julia Evans
E WEN Wong doesn’t want to
grow up in a world polluted by
plastic.
So the 15-year-old Burnside
High School student has
begun designing a robot to
detect plastic in beaches, rivers
and the ocean.
“While it’s still in early
stages, I’ve already had a lot
of support and direction from
experts like Brendon and
Chris from NIWA, Brendon
from ThisDesign and April
from Limitless who have been
super keen to push my project
along and offer their expertise
which is really exciting,”
E Wen said.
She’s named her robot BIRD,
which stands for Biomimicry
Identification Robot Device
and fortunately it’s also shaped
like a bird.
“As part of this, I am
designing an unmanned aerial
vehicle capable of detecting
and locating macro-plastics
such as plastic bags and bottle
tops using either laser diodes
or machine learning software
to rapidly autonomously
identify rubbish from a camera
feed,” she said.
The plastic will then be
tagged and linked to a crowd
sourced clean-up app that
guides rubbish collectors to
dispose of it, she said.
“It’s only in the design stage
at the moment, but it’s pretty
cool,” she said. “I like the way
technology can be used to help
the environment.”
E Wen has been working
on the designs for her BIRD
through the advocacy
organisation she set up at
school, P.S Our Beaches.
FUTURE: 15-year-old
E Wen Wong is developing
a robot to collect plastic
from beaches in her bid to
spread awareness about
climate change.
“It’s all about spreading
awareness about the
environment and climate
change,” she said.
Her passion for the
environment has been
there for as long as she can
remember. But E Wen said it
was when she was 10-yearsold
she started looking into
climate change.
“I got into meteorology and
climatology. I’ve been hooked
ever since then,” she said.
Improving
alleyway
safety in
spotlight
• By Julia Evans
MOTOR-CYCLISTS using
a Fendalton alleyway as a
shortcut may soon have to take
the long route.
City council staff have
investigated possible options
to deter motor-cyclists and
cyclists and improve safety of
pedestrians using the alleyway
on Coldstream Court and
Barlow St following concerns
raised by residents.
Residents complained to the
city council last January and
two bollards were installed.
However, following up at the
end of last year, residents say the
alleyway is still being misused
as visibility is poor.
Resident Hamish Martin
wrote to the city council
describing a collision he saw
between two young cyclists.
In a report to the Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board, staff said
there are several possible
options for the board to
consider.
One option was a pavement
messaging to remind user to
slow down, another to improve
visibility by lower fences and
the last to introduce a new
fence-style barrier.
The new barriers would
impact on other users of the
alleyway, staff said.
“Generally to stop all motorcyclists
entering access ways the
range of barriers have to be very
severe . . . many members of the
community would not be able
to gain entry such as in their
wheelchairs, mobility scooters,
pushing prams,” the report said.
City council staff said the
preferred option was to improve
visibility between people
nearing the access way by
lowering the height of the two
boundary fences.
MEN IN Papanui have been
given the chance to get fit and
and social networks.”
Petition to extend dog park
• By Julia Evans
FEEDBACK AND an online
petition is being sought in a bid
to extend The Groynes dog park.
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
member Aaron Campbell has set
up a petition, Extend Groynes
Dog Park – More Park 2 Bark, on
change.org.
And Mr Campbell has been
hard at work putting up signs
around the area seeking feedback
from users.
Said Mr Campbell: “Ninetynine
per cent of the infrastructure
is in place, including suitable
fencing for a dog park bordering
the motorway bypass but there
are no plans to utilise it. Allowing
dogs and their owners in is a
logical and cost-effective use of
the space.”
It comes following setting up
signs to get feedback on the proposal,
which would see a part of a
31ha empty lot leftover from the
Western Belfast Bypass added to
the Northwood dog park.
“An extension wouldn’t be all
of that area but I’m open to hearing
from users. Their input is the
most important thing,” he said.
He launched his bid following
frustration with the slow
A FENDALTON resident
has written to Mayor Lianne
Dalziel calling for trucks to be
banned around Fendalton
Stephen Purcell has lived on
the corner of Fendalton and
west Glandovey Rds for the last
13 years. He wrote Ms Dalziel
a letter detailing the impact
heavy vehicles had on his life,
asking for trucks to be banned.
In the letter he said they
operated from 4.30am-10.30pm
daily. The engine brakes and acceleration
was noisy and made
his house shake.
“They storm through, and the
poor old house shakes like a 3.8
aftershock,” he said.
PALS: Aaron Campbell, with old english sheep dog Winchester,
has launched a bid to extend The Groynes dog park.
city council process and says he
simply wants the public to take
advantage of the space.
“It’s a work in progress.
There’s no long-term plan for the
extension. But I’m trying to get
permission to set up a poster and
start getting feedback from users,”
Mr Campbell said.
“Once you spend a few thousand,
it’ll pretty much take care
of itself from there,” he said.
Resident gains support against trucks
“To say they are noisy would
be an understatement because
we are right on the intersection,
we get engine brakes and air
brakes or a combination of both
when the lights are red.”
Mr Purcell said he has seen at
least 40 accidents at the intersection.
“I have no doubt there
will be fatalities.”
He said making the roads safer
for pedestrians and cyclists
is imperative considering the
number of schools in the area.
“We, along with all our
concerned neighbours, are
hoping and praying something
can be done to rectify this,” he
said.
Mr Purcell has been lobbying
neighbours to join the Glandovey
Idris Straven Residents’
Association – door-knocking
residents.
“One hundred per cent of
residents that were at home
over the two-day period joined
our association, all of them
experiencing the same shaking
when the truck and trailer units
go past,” he said.
The association now has more
than 50 members from Straven
Rd alone.
St Bede’s starts upgrade
• By Julia Evans
CONSTRUCTION HAS started
on the multi-million dollar
revamp of St Bede’s College.
Work includes replacing the
catholic school’s chapel and
Grimes block classrooms, as
well as earthquake strengthening
and extending its performing
arts centre.
The college also has plans to
build a new 750m 2 sports pavilion
and gym adjacent to the
existing hockey field.
The chapel will cost $3.5 million
and the St Bede’s Old Boys’
Association is rallying to raise
$1.5 million.
The balance will be met by a
$1 million grant from the Society
of Mary and $1 million from
the school’s board of proprietors
insurance.
The college has been without
a chapel since 2012, converting
an old science building to use
for mass.
The chapel was repaired following
the September 4, 2010,
earthquake, but was ultimately
claimed by the February 22,
2011, earthquake, after being
deemed irreparable.
The expansion of the performing
arts centre, which will be
beside the new chapel, includes a
new foyer and toilet area.
It will take up part of the
space which the assembly hall
had occupied before it was demolished.
The rest of that space
will be taken up by the new
chapel.
The proposed Grimes building
will contain two floors
of teaching space for art and
cooking classes with toilets and
a foyer. It will be built on an old
tennis court.
The new sports pavilion
has space for two classrooms,
changing rooms, bathrooms,
first aid space, storage, an officials’
room, and a weights and
gym area.
SKILLS: Chloe Jenkins and Marisol Hunter were Rangi Ruru’s
lifesaving leaders last year.
RANGI RURU Girls’ School
year 9 students will be getting
into the pool to learn lifesaving
skills.
Lesley Joyce who heads the
lifesaving programme at Rangi
Ruru said the students will
take part in a compulsory programme.
“The skills our girls learn are
both valuable and can be life
saving and it’s for this reason
it’s compulsory for all year 9s to
take part,” she said.
At this level, they learn basic
water safety and lifesaving
skills, including resuscitation
SCHOOLS
WORK: Construction has
started on the revamp of St
Bede’s College.
Students learn how
to save lives in the
pool and ocean
which leads to the bronze star
award. With a shortage of
volunteer lifesavers on beaches
around the country, Ms Joyce
said encouraging young people
to take up lifesaving is even
more important.
“We are fortunate to have a
school pool at Rangi Ruru and
indeed it wasn’t until 2014/15
that the Royal Lifesaving Society
saw an increase again in the
number of awards being given
out in Canterbury, with the
earthquakes having damaged so
many pools around the region,”
she said.
38.8 per cent merit.
Rangi Ruru assistant
principal-curriculum Juliet Collins
said the results were very pleasing
but not unexpected.
“We know our students well . . .
so working alongside them closely
means there are no surprises for
us or them in these outstanding
results,” she said.
Ms Collins also cites ongoing
professional upskilling for teaching
staff as crucial to students’ NCEA
results and overall performance.
Played at Wilding Park, Linwood,
the tournament saw competitors
from all over the country
vie for singles and doubles titles.
Hillview Christian School’s
Duncan McCall beat Auckland’s
Jack Chapman in a play-off for
third, 6-1, 3-6, 8-10, meaning
Christchurch players took all
three spots on the podium.
Diego, who plays for the
Waimairi club, went through the
tournament without dropping a
set, showing great ability to get
past Liam, 6-3, 6-2, in the final.
He beat Wellington’s Tom Bevan,
6-2, 6-1, in the opening round
before sweeping past Auckland’s
Jamie MacKenzie, 6-4, 6-2.
Diego then met South
Brighton’s Ethan Cooke in the
quarter-final and cruised to victory,
6-2, 6-2.
He played Jack in the semifinal
beating him, 6-2, 6-0.
Te Kura Hagley Park club
head coach Hugo Nurse-Strang
trained Liam and said it was a
fantastic final, played between
two very good young players.
It was great to have Cantabrians
in the top three. I don’t think
that has happened before, we are
normally lucky to have one in
the final, so this is really great,”
he said.
CHAMPION: Papanui’s Diego
Quispe-Kim won the 12 and
under national tennis title.
Diego also played in the doubles
with Auckland’s Rion Suga,
but was beaten in the quarterfinal,
6-0, 6-0, by Nelson’s
Finn Burridge and Auckland’s
Dominik Wijntjes.
St Martins School’s Ruby
Young and Hutt Valley’s Rosearna
Stairmand were beaten by
Auckland’s Kristina Bogomazova
and Sasha Situe in straight sets,
6-0, 6-1, in the girls doubles final.
Jack Chapman and Nelson’s
Harry Pugh won the boys doubles
against Auckland’s Lev Gorb
Brighton starts in February. The class will
be on Monday evenings from February 12
at 6.30pm, while a mixed class (men and
women) will be on Thursday evenings from
February 15 at 7.30pm.
Anyone enrolling and pre-paying by
February 10 will receive a $20 discount.
Enrolments are through the website, www.
bellyraqs.co.nz.
The eight, 75-minute classes comprise an
hour of dance movement and 15 minutes of
background information on belly dancing,
with videos and music.
With one husband and wife already signed
up, instructor Kashmir is encouraging more
men to join the mixed class.
“Belly dancing is not just for women,” she
says. “It is fun and enjoyable for everyone.”
Belly dancing can also be a step on the way
to a new fitness regime, and participants get
to know how their body works through the
various movements, Kashmir says.
Kashmir Belly Dance is located at 8
Drake Street, South Brighton.
Traditional
social dancing
of Scotland
For hundreds of years Scottish Country
Dancing was enjoyed at every level of
society, from royal ballrooms to village halls.
Over the last 100 years it has been developed
to maintain its unique style and music, while
keeping pace with the modern world.
There are Scottish Country Dance clubs
on every continent of the world, which is
testament to the universal appeal of the
dancing. Here in the Christchurch area there
are nine clubs providing the opportunity to
enjoy this pastime Monday to Thursday, plus
a children’s class on Saturday mornings and
combined dances most Saturday evenings.
The health benefits of Scottish Country
Dancing are documented. The physical
movements exercise the body. The patterns
of the dances are great for keeping the brain
on its toes. The music, which lifts the spirits,
and the social interaction complete the
package.
Just step on the mat…
This is the advice given to people who
want to learn aikido, Aikido Shinryukan
Canterbury’s chief instructor Andrew
Williamson says.
“It really is that easy. Of course, every
new student is naturally apprehensive about
beginning a Japanese martial art – we have
all ‘been there’. But to begin you need to take
that first step and it really is not that scary.”
Beginners are eased into training through
basics classes.
“Step by step we build your knowledge.
We focus on beginners understanding the
fundamentals of aikido so they can enjoy
developing their skills. Anyone can do
WORKOUT,
SWIM, RELAX
aikido regardless of age or fitness,” Andrew
says.
“We want students to develop technically
and physically as quickly as they are
capable. We can then introduce them to
more advanced training and international
instructors and build on the total knowledge
base held in our group.”
Aikido Shinryukan Canterbury offers daily
classes for adults and children in Burnside
and Linwood.
For February, beginners may train
for just $20. For more information
Exercise
sharpens young
adult brains
Regular physical activity improves brain function
even in young adults considered in their prime
and at the height of cognitive ability, according to
a University of Otago study.
A body of research already exists showing
aerobic exercise improves brain function
in older adults, but there is a limited
amount of literature on how it affects
young adults.
The Otago researchers, led by
Department of Psychology Senior
Lecturer Dr Liana Machado, set out to
test the oft-held belief that the brains of
young adults in their prime might not
benefit as much as older people from
regular sustained exercise.
They took 52 tertiary students, aged
between 18 to 30, and put them through
a series of cognitive tests on a computer
while measuring oxygen availability in
the frontal lobe of their brains, as well as
their self-reported exercise frequency.
Dr Machado says their “surprising”
findings, just published online in the
journal Psychophysiology, show that
both blood supply to the brain and
cognitive functioning appear to benefit
from regular exercise in young adults.
“This provides compelling evidence
that regular exercise, at least five days per
week, is a way to sharpen our cognitive
ability as young adults – challenging
the assumption that living a sedentary
lifestyle leads to problems only later in
life,” she says.
The research also provides potential
insight into understanding why people
who regularly engage in aerobic exercise
tend to function better on a cognitive
level.
“I think the idea that young people do
not have to worry about exercising since
they are in their prime developmentally
is rapidly being overturned by mounting
evidence that even the brains of young
adults can benefit from regular exercise,”
she says.
“The exercise could involve brisk
walking or more vigorous activity, and
could be made up of a few 10 minute
bouts of exercise, rather than one single
block of exercise,” she says.
The researchers also found that body
mass index was not a key factor in how
well the brain functioned, indicating that
regular engagement in physical activity
may be more important than body
weight.
Dr Machado says she had noticed
over the years that university students
appeared progressively less fit.
“I wondered whether we might find
significant relationships between exercise
levels, oxygen availability in the brain,
and cognition in the young adults, but
no studies had considered this in healthy
young adults.”
These findings come at a time of
increased scientific focus on links
between exercise and cognitive health in
older adults.
