MATES: Vajin Armstrong won the 62km race at the Tarawera Ultra Marathon, finishing just 17sec ahead of training partner Chris
Dunell. Earlier the pair were affected by a mischievous act which cost Armstrong 5min.
Mischief-makers and great sportsmanship
• By Gordon Findlater
SUMNER RUNNING Club’s
Vajin Armstrong almost had
his run in the 62km race, at the
Tarawera Ultra Marathon, end
in disaster after being duped by
mischief-makers.
Armstrong won the race in
a time of 5hr 36min. However,
his time should have been much
faster. With just over 2km left to
run he had a lead of approximately
5min. The 37-year-old then
took a wrong turn in Rotorua
because arrows and flagging on
one intersection of the course had
purposely been shifted.
“I ended up in an archery
range. There was actually a competition
going on and I soon realised
this didn’t look like where
the course should be going,” said
Armstrong. •Turn to page 19
Residents
to tackle
rubbish
collection
concerns
• By Sarla Donovan
RESIDENTS concerned with the
maintenance of Sumner’s public
spaces, including overflowing
rubbish bins, will meet with city
council staff tomorrow.
It comes after a public meeting
last week, where a group of 30
Sumner residents met to discuss
how to resolve long-standing concerns,
particularly about rubbish
collection.
Representatives from the Sumner
Community Residents’ Association,
Sumner Adopt-a-Patch
project, Sumner Business Group
and Esplanade Gardening Group
presented at the meeting.
The residents’ association
will raise its issues of concern
tomorrow at a meeting with
city council staff and Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board member Darrell Latham.
They include what penalties
might be levied on contractors
who fail to empty rubbish bins
as scheduled; the frequency of
bin emptying throughout 2018;
maintenance of public gardens
and lawns, and whether the
Adopt-a-Patch project can work
with the city council to improve
public places.
NOT A bad sports yarn on the front page
today.
Vajin Armstrong won the Tarawera Ultra
Marathon at the weekend but it was full of
drama and great sportsmanship.
Armstrong led by 5min with 2km to go when he took a wrong
turn, courtesy of someone who had mischievously changed
the course signs. He had to backtrack to the course, where
he bumped into his good mate and training partner, Chris
Dunnell, who had been a distant second.
They ran the last 2km together and in a piece of
sportsmanship, or commonsense, when they got to the home
straight he told Armstrong the race was his on the basis he had
been well ahead when the wrong turn was taken.
Great stuff.
Van Asch move not ruled out
• By Sarla Donovan
THE BOARD of Sumner’s van
Asch Deaf Education Centre is
refusing to rule out a relocation
and subsequent land sale.
The combined van Asch and
Kelston Deaf Education Centre
board of trustees chairwoman
Rachel Douglas said since 2012,
the board had been
considering the
“long-term future
location” of the
van Asch operation.
Rachel
Douglas
However, that
process was currently
on hold
while the board
“explores its new strategic
goals,” Ms Douglas told Bay
Harbour News.
There are currently 11 students
in residence at van Asch’s
Truro St campus in Sumner.
Parents and caregivers were sent
a letter on January 22 outlining
seven goals developed at the end
of last year.
They included “an exciting
new development which is the
board’s intention to create one
new organisational structure to
deliver a more efficient service
nationwide. Having a national
structure will allow us to make
the best use of our buildings and
properties.” Asked whether the
relocation of the van Asch centre
was being considered as part
of that, Ms Douglas said she did
not know at this stage.
“We only have questions, not
answers, at the moment on that.
I can’t rule anything in or out
. . . that’s honestly where we’re
•Thirty one students attend
van Asch Deaf Education
Centre DEC provisions at
Wharenui School, Hillmorton
High, Hagley Community
College and at its Sumner
campus.
•It supports 896 students
throughout the South Island
and North Island.
at. I’m not even trying to hide
anything.”
“At the moment, we are looking
at the service delivery and
then we’ll look at the property to
go with it. So it’s to be based on
the children’s needs first.”
The board was looking at one
new national structure. “We
don’t know how that’s going
•It employs 89 staff.
•It is one of two centres
which provide deaf education
services in New Zealand for
more than 2000 students.
•Redcliffs School has operated
out of the van Asch campus
since the middle of 2011 but
is expected to relocate to
Redcliffs Park late next year.
to look yet and we don’t want
to pre-empt that because we’re
working through that over the
next 12 months.”
There had been and would
continue to be extensive consultation,
said Ms Douglas. She
emphasised the board did not
have a preferred location. “Our
preference is to focus on the
needs of the children and work
from there.”
Ministry of Education deputy
secretary sector enablement and
support Katrina Casey said no
decisions had been made on the
van Asch school site.
“Discussions with the board
include exploring potential sites
for the core school services,
satellite and resource hubs, and
are ongoing.”
Van Asch principal Bernie
Mulcahy-Bouwman would
not comment on whether a
relocation was being considered,
referring Bay Harbour News to
Ms Douglas.
Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson
said it would be premature to
speculate.
SCHOOL ROUTE STOPPED
Students travelling to Linwood
College along the Sumner route
will now have to catch the Purple
There will be a new shelter
installed at the bus stop opposite
go-ahead. The current stop at
1008 Ferry Rd does not provide
any protection from the weather.
The city council has agreed to
install one at a cost of $48,000,
which may come down to $36,000
if advertising company, Adshel,
purchase advertising rights.
BE IN TO
FINISHED: The new catch bench sits between Sumner Rd and the Crater Rim
Bluffs and is designed to stop falling rocks landing on the road.
Catch bench work completed
WORK HAS been
completed on the catch
bench that has been built
to reduce the risk of falling
rocks bouncing onto
Sumner Rd.
The completion of the
bench excavation is a significant
milestone it marks
the end of stage one of the
multimillion-dollar project
to get Sumner Rd reopened
to the public.
The new catch bench sits
between Sumner Rd and
the Crater Rim Bluffs and
is literally designed to catch
falling rocks before they
land on the road.
“Contractors McConnell
Dowell and their subcontractors
have excavated
about 100,000 cu m of
rock from the slope above
Sumner Rd to create the
catch bench. It stretches
for a length of about 400m
and is 15m wide and 18m
high,’’ said city council
senior project manager
Peter Bawden.
It has taken eight months
to build the catch bench,
which is one of a number
of rockfall protection
measures created along the
route.
“If we get another earthquake,
the intention is that
rocks that come tumbling
down from the bluffs will
land in the catch bench
rather than on the road,’’
Mr Bawden said.
Most of the rock excavated
from the catch bench
has been stockpiled at the
Gollans Bay Quarry. Over
the coming months some
of it will be used in other
city council projects.
The next stages involves
repairing and reinforcing
the retaining walls below
Sumner Rd and rebuilding
the road itself. As well as
finishing drainage works
and tidying up the Gollans
Bay Quarry area.
Sub-contractors are
starting to work on repairing
a 100m retaining wall
below Sumner Rd, at its
intersection with Reserve
Tce.
The work involves
drilling anchors into
the bedrock behind the
existing wall and installing
new reinforced shotcrete
concrete facing.
Procurement of the
remaining retain walls
packages and pavement
repairs is under way
and the target is to
have Sumner Rd open in
early to mid 2019.
Residents’ association
“We are confident that
CLEAN-UP: On Monday morning Sumner residents Lesley Murdoch (left) and
Susan Kaschula put in more than eight volunteer hours to clean up and weed
along the gravel walkway next to Scarborough Park on Heberden Ave and the
verge next to the paddling pool. They used the city council’s Snap Send Solve
app to ask if contractors could collect the four large piles of green waste.
Author searches for jetty stories
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Sarla Donovan
GOVERNORS BAY author Jane
Robertson wants to uncover
the stories behind Lyttelton
Harbour’s lost jetties.
While writing her 2016 book
Head of the Harbour: A history
of Governors Bay, Ōhinetahi,
Allandale and Teddington, Ms
Robertson found the section on
jetties particularly intriguing,
prompting her to start a blog
about them.
She is exploring where they
were located, how they were
used and what happened to
them.
A blog was a natural choice
because it meant she could do
things in small chunks, focusing
on one jetty at a time.
“It gives me an organising
framework. I was also keen to get
other people involved – giving
feedback, making comments;
adding their understanding and
knowledge to what I was writing.”
There is only one ‘intact’
jetty at the head of Lyttelton
Harbour, where once there were
at least seven, said Ms Robertson.
“Before reasonable road
transport – or any roads at
all – the sea was a highway on
which Maori and early European
settlers depended. A jetty
marked the point of transition
between sea and land. It also
denoted settlement, a degree of
permanence.”
However, as is now evident,
jetties are “anything but
permanent,” with Governors
Bay jetty the only one that
remains.
There are remnants of abandoned,
decaying jetties scattered
around the harbour.
“Many more have long been
swallowed by the sea,” Ms Roberston
said.
A lot of the early jetties in
places like Charteris Bay, Purau,
Cass Bay and Camp Bay, were
built privately so residents could
get produce to market (primarily
to Lyttelton.)
“Most of the bays at some
point got public jetties built by
the provincial government and
they were also for transporting
produce but also for recreation;
steamers used to ply the harbour
bringing people up to any of
the bays to have a picnic. People
still do that, but basically only
to Quail Island and Diamond
Harbour.”
HISTORY: Jane Robertson wants to uncover stories behind
Lyttelton Harbour’s lost jetties. The original jetty at Governors
Bay (above) was dismantled in 1938 after a boy fishing from it
fell and drowned.
Trust’s bid to hook
$500k jetty grant
• By Sarla Donovan
A FUNDRAISING campaign to
repair the earthquake-damaged
Governors Bay jetty is going full
steam ahead.
The Governors Bay Jetty
Restoration Trust will put in
an application to the Lotteries
Commission on Monday
for $500,000.
But first it has to
get 10 more planks
sponsored. It needs to
raise a third of the cost
so the commission can
be sure the project will
happen.
The plank sponsorship
drive was helped
recently by trust secretary
Louisa Eades. Her story
about the campaign and her own
involvement was featured in a
women’s magazine.
Ms Eades said her friends
and colleagues were excited.
“In terms of an increase in
donations, I wasn’t sure what to
expect. My guesses ranged from
fizzer to huge success.”
In the two weeks since the
article hit news stands, several
plank sponsors and other donors
have come out of the woodwork,
along with new members including
some from the North Island.
“And the New Zealand Women’s
Weekly has donated $500 to
sponsor their own plank,” said
Ms Eades.
Donors of $500 or more will
have their name etched on a
plaque in the new jetty.
Since fundraising
started at the end of last
year, the trust has raised
or secured $670,802,
including a contribution
from the city council.
Ms Eades had been
“blown away” by the support
and encouragement
Louisa Eades received in that time.
“The campaign has got
off to a fantastic start and is really
picking up momentum, with
some exciting events planned for
this year.”
An exhibition and art auction
is planned for Saturday, June 2,
at the Governors Bay Hotel with
items donated by leading local
artists.
Last year the city council
agreed to temporarily sell ownership
of the jetty for $1 to the
trust. The restoration is expected
to cost up to $3 million, with
work set to start next year.
A NEW footpath alongside Moa
Bone Cave is a step closer, with
plans being released last week.
The pathway has been out of
action since the February 22,
2011, earthquake rendered it
unusable.
Following pressure from
residents and Redcliffs School
parents, the city council agreed
to reinstate the footpath.
An area at risk of residual
rockfall was fenced off and
extensive risk remediation work
completed.
Now a plan for a new footpath
beside the fence is out for public
feedback, and
the city council
expects to
install it next
month.
Redcliffs Residents
Association
secretary
Pat McIntosh
said it was “delighted”
at news
the footpath was to be restored.
“We are sure local residents
will be very relieved at having
access once more along this side
of the road.”
Heathcote Ward city councillor
Sara Templeton said it was
great to see progress on the issue.
“I’d like to encourage local
residents to get involved and let
the (Linwood-Central-Heathcote)
community board know
what they think of the plans.”
Having the ability to walk
safely around the corner from
Balmoral Hill and McCormacks
Bay to Redcliffs was vital for
children, she said.
“Simply scaling and fencing
of the rockfall areas and asking
them to cross at the busy Main
Rd corner in rush hour wasn’t an
option.”
Dr McIntosh said the footpath
would address safety concerns by
reducing the need to cross Main
Teen to ride in US horse competition
SALLY MCPHERSON loves all
things equine.
Now the 17-year-old from
Akaroa has been named in
the New Zealand Team for the
American Quarter Horse Youth
World Cup in Bryan, Texas.
But don’t get it confused with
rodeo.
Think dressage with a western
twist, that’s american quarter
horse, Sally said.
“It’s not rodeo. “It’s very
precise and technical. But it’s
also very colourful and sparkly
unlike the more demure
dressage,” she said.
Sally said there’s a fair bit of
bling involved in the outfits
which are quite heavy from all
the rhinestones.
“Some jackets and tops can
cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Many are specially made for the
competitor and the horses are
also bedazzled,” she said.
Sally and her team will head
to the United States in June to
compete for medals in cutting,
reining, horsemanship, ranch
riding, trail, western riding,
hunt seat equitation, hunter
under saddle and showmanship.
She will have a horse provided
by the organisers.
She’s the only Christchurch
member of the youth team and
Sally said it’s the realisation of a
goal she set herself many years
ago.
“I have been working towards
this for a long time,” she said.
“My aim is to learn as much
as I can and be proud of my
achievements. It’ll be the
best experience and biggest
opportunity yet, to meet others
and compete on the international
stage.”
Sally grew up in a family who
all love horses. Her parents, Ian
and Lindsey are president and
secretary of the Christchurch
Western Riding Association in
Mandeville.
Mr McPherson said he and his
wife have supported Sally every
step of the way in what’s been
a huge commitment over the
years.
“She puts in a massive amount
of work, attending national
competitions in the North Island
and the New Zealand Youth
Development Squad camps four
said.
Mr McPherson said he is
excited and proud to see
Sally have the opportunity to
compete in the United States
competition, representing New
Zealand alongside 19 other
countries.
Sally will leave for Texas on
June 22. The opening ceremony
for the event will take place
Consent for
pathway
on hold
• By Sarla Donovan
Fire rages, homes at risk
THE CONSENT application
for the next section of the
Christchurch Coastal Pathway is
on hold.
It was lodged in December last
year but ECan has given the city
council until Friday to provide
additional information about the
potential effects on coastal processes,
coastal water quality and
ecology, natural character and
landscapes.
They have also asked for further
information on the potential effects
of dewatering and potential
reclamation as a result of the
proposal.
ECan will then decide whether
any parts of the consent application
will be publically notified.
The 760m section from Shag
Rock to the Sumner Surf Life
Saving Club is jointly funded by
the city council and the Coastal
Pathway Group and is expected to
take 12 months to build.
The expected start date is April
this year, however, council manager
planning and delivery transport
Lynette Ellis has said the
start date would be conditional
on any “additional requirements”
identified during the consenting
process.
Our People
Explaining the dangers of rips on
Tech wizard Adam
Hutchinson invents travel
apps but in his spare
time, he makes short
documentaries. His most
recent has been shared
more than 900 times in
10 days. It explains the
dangers of three rips
that exist in Sumner
and Scarborough when
there’s a swell. He
talks to reporter Sarla
Donovan.
What prompted you make
this documentary about the
rips in Sumner?
I occasionally hear the coastguard
siren go off and recently
it’s been going off more than
usual. I don’t understand much
myself about the rips in Sumner
and speaking to a couple of
friends they felt the same. So I
thought community-wide there
was maybe a lack of awareness
and this was a way to provide
information easily. Documentary
making is a project that I do
on the side, a hobby I guess. My
background is actually in IT. I
developed an app in 2011 called
CamperMate, which turned into
a network of GPS enabled apps
called GeoZone collecting GPS
data on tourism flows which I
sold to Tourism Holdings in 2015
and now work for the company
from out here in Sumner.
You must have been gutted to
see a 14-year-old was lost in one
of those rips just last week.
Absolutely, really terrible
circumstances. It really took
the danger up another level. For
me personally my experience in
rips has not been life threatening.
Every person that I know
who’s been caught in a rip has,
thankfully, been rescued and
it was very sad because it really
escalated the threat in terms of
how severe the consequences can
DANGER:
Sumner
man Adam
Hutchinson
has made a
documentary
about the
three rips in
Scarborough
and Sumner
which he
posted online
HUNTER
actually be. It’s not only awful
for the family but just highlights
the risk again. It’s super sad all
round.
I was surprised watching the
documentary to hear Sumner/
Scarborough could be so dangerous
– I usually think
of Piha and places like that on
the Auckland’s west coast.
Were you surprised?
I sort of was in all honesty. I
knew it was dangerous but again
it wasn’t on the scale of Piha in
terms of just how dangerous it
could be. Put it this way, after
the terrible incident last week
it’s really escalated the threat or
the danger and bought home the
potential consequences of being
in a rip.
Do you think there’s enough
information provided about the
rips along Sumner and Scarborough
beach?
We could do with better signage
to help people understand
the dangers of the rips. We’re
in a fairly unique position in
the fact that the rips in Sumner
don’t change, meaning that the
information we can provide on
the signs can be fairly detailed to
help people understand exactly
where they are in Sumner, as opposed
to generic rip information.
Could you tell me a bit about
your family?
I live up on Heberden Ave, I
bought up there recently and just
love it, love the neighbours and
the community. In my house
there’s my son Max, puppy Nash
and myself. I have a shared office
space above Stoked surf shop.
We’ve got nine people working
there.
ended up staying there for about
two-and-a-half years. That was
a pretty cool experience. Working
at the butcher’s shop was
amazing; it was in a place called
Stavanger which is where the
fjords are and in the fjords they
didn’t have access to fresh meat
so there were a lot of traditional
Norwegian recipes that involved
salting and preserving meat. It
was quite interesting being the
only foreigner who’d worked in
this butcher shop for 175 years
and learning some of these traditional
Norwegian salting recipes.
And what do you get up to in
your spare time?
I like fishing, I go spear fishing
up in Kaikoura quite a lot; some
hunting, diving and surfing that’s
pretty much it. I love to get my
hands dirty.
If there was one thing you
would change about Sumner
what would it be?
That’s a tough one. Perhaps in
an ideal world Bohemian Bakery
would be open on Mondays and
Tuesdays – their food is amazing!
It made the journey north
It has since returned to Fiordland.
Peace Boat is an international
or youth hostels.
Since 1983 there have been
about three journeys a year, offering
educational opportunities
to around 1000 passengers on
board.
humanitarian aid at their
various stops and visit local
A BRANCH OF
Nuk shows his romantic side
For Port Hills
National
list MP Nuk
Korako, it
is the little
things that
count when
it comes to
romance
TODAY IS Valentine’s Day
– a day of romance – and
while it may be a little over
commercialised, nonetheless
it is a good excuse to spend
special time with the one you
love and cherish.
For me especially it is 28
years since I met my wife,
Chris, on the Grand Canal
in Venice. I proposed and we
married that same year at
Rapaki.
Over the last few weeks, I
have taken advantage of the
hot weather to be out and
about experiencing some
of the great SummerTimes
festival which the city council
facilitates.
I have particularly enjoyed
the Lyttelton Summerfest
film evenings and am looking
forward to walking the
City2Surf on March 18 with
my family and I hope to see
you along the course.
If you have yourself, or
known someone who has
participated in the Kathmandu
Coast to Coast you will
appreciate the time and effort
that goes into training for this
iconic event.
I have done it twice and
I can honestly say that it is
gruelling, painful and worth
every minute. Congratulations
to everyone who crossed the
finish line at New Brighton
beach or participated at the
weekend.
We are fortunate to have so
many great events and open
spaces in our city and within
the Port Hills.
I think we have the best
beaches, great parks, walkways
ideal for humans and animals
alike, cycleways, cafes,
restaurants, shopping,
weekly markets with
local fresh produce,
exercise facilities, and
some beautiful gardens
to enjoy.
To add to that there
are four sites identified
for a new skate park
in the Ferrymead and
Sumner area and the
city council is asking
for your feedback.
Also there are two
developments that will
add to new Lyttelton
landmarks, one being
Collett’s Corner, which
is progressing thanks
to Ohu Development
which is working with
the community to
create a building that
will be collectively
owned by the
community. And the Lyttelton
Museum site on London St
which is progressing through
the concept design.
Whatever you do this
Valentine’s Day, if there’s one
thing I’ve learnt over the last
28 years, it’s the little things,
the thoughtful things that
count the most.
Enjoy your day.
Hungerford, Henderson
take out Billabong titles
• By Gordon Findlater
TAYLORS MISTAKE surfers
Estella Hungerford and Ava
Henderson both won titles in
the Billabong Grom Series in
Whangamata at the weekend.
Hungerford, 15, claimed her
first national event victory in the
under-16 girls division.
After making it to a finals
berth at the
national championships
in
January, Hungerford
found
herself at the
top of a strong
field of female
Ava
Henderson
surfers in her
division.
However, an
impressive score of 10.8 in the
final secured her the title. She
defeated the North Island contingent
of Ariana Shewry (7.8),
Brie Bennett (7.2) and Georgia
Wederell (4.1) in the final.
Henderson, 12, continued
her good run of form this year
claiming the under-14 girls division
against Piha’s Liv Haysom
(7.4). Round one winner Natasha
Gouldsbury (7.3) had to settle for
third ahead of Australia’s Carol
Fujino (5) in fourth.
The second of three events in
the Billabong Grom Series was
CHAMPION: Estella Hungerford showed her class to win her
first national event in Whangamata.
PHOTO: CORMAC SEYMOUR
held in messy 1-1.5m waves,
with the Coromandel coastline
blanketed by low cloud and rain.
Conditions were far from ideal
but New Zealand’s top junior
surfers battled it out across eight
divisions to secure titles.
The series is split into four
divisions ranging from under-14
to under 20 in two-year
increments. The final event of
the series will take place at Piha
beach, Auckland, from February
24-25.
•From page 1
He then backtracked to the
misguiding intersection and
arrived at the same time as
eventual runner-up Chris Dunell
from St Martins.
“He was about to head the
wrong way so I stopped him
and we changed the marking,”
Armstrong said.
You could say, somewhat
luckily for Armstrong, the
man that had now caught him
was a good friend and also his
regular training partner. The
pair completed the last 2km
together before sportsmanship
dictated the 17sec winning
margin.
“Chris being the honourable
fellow he is told me I was well
ahead,” Armstrong said.
“He certainly didn’t kick as
hard as he could have and let
me run away down the home
straight.”
Luckily Armstrong was the
only runner affected by the act
of tomfoolery. Although it added
at least a handful of minutes to
his winning time, he’s remained
upbeat about the interesting
finish to the race.
“It’s an awesome group of
people who do these sorts of
SPORTS
Mischief-makers and
great sportsmanship
events and there’s a real sense of
camaraderie, so that overcomes
anything like this.”
This was Armstrong’s seventh
time competing at the ultra
marathon. However, it was
the first win at the event. On
all previous six occasions he
competed in the 102km race
where he has been on the podium
on four occasions.
The weather in Rotorua also
threw a spanner into the works
for competitors. Persistent rain
in the two days leading up to the
event and on race day meant that
runners had to be conscious of
footing throughout muddy areas
on the trail run.
It was also a busy weekend for
other Sumner Running Club
members competing in two
major South Island events.
In the Coast to Coast
mountain run on Friday, Nathan
Jones came third overall in 3hr
34min.
At the Buller Marathon Lisa
Brignull finished second in
the women’s field in a time of
3hr 12min. Meanwhile, Danny
Carmine, who was running in
just his second full marathon,
finished seventh overall in
57min.
downstairs opening out onto a private lawn
and garden.
full of easy-care trees and scrubs and there is
flat lawn to enjoy in the privacy of the front
of the property.
While the luxury passenger liners are
soon to make a reappearance, the Diamond
Harbour - Lyttelton ferries are constant
passer bys (20 times a day) providing quick
and scenic transport to Lyttelton.
