Other sources include rainwater, swimming pools and natural streams or rivers. To catch rain, a clean plastic tarp (approx. 8’ x 12’) with the corners elevated
can provide potable, ready to use water which requires no further treatment. Due to the weight of the water, be certain the corners are securely fastened. The
only exception to using rainwater would be any situation which could contaminate the air such as chemical, nuclear or biological activity. It is good practice to
let it rain for about 20 minutes before beginning collection to allow the atmosphere to cleanse itself of pollen and dust. Rainwater collected from a roof gutter
system is not ready for use and must be purified as it can contain bird and insect droppings as well as dirt, pollen and bacteria. The same can be said for pools,
natural streams or rivers. All but the rainwater collected from a clean tarp requires purification before using.
There are several methods to purify water, the simplest of which is a gravity fed filtration system such as a Big Berkey or Aqua Pure system. Both work well and a
Google search will provide many vendors for each. Be sure to order additional filter elements sufficient to handle future needs. A review of the capacities of the
filters with the manufacturer will provide a good guideline as to what you will need. These are simple to use and are operated by pouring the water to be purified
into one container which sits directly above another to catch the processed water with a simple spigot providing access to your potable water. Made of stainless
steel and requiring no power or pumping, they are a good choice and can last for years with enough filter elements. They also make smaller units utilizing hand
operation for travel and camping. Using the clearest water available and pre filtering thru several layers of clean cloth will greatly extend the life of your filter
elements. Be aware, this type filter does not remove viruses, dissolved chemicals or minerals. In discussing your individual needs with the manufacturer they will
