Dr Crime - Legalizing Pot
Dear Dr. Crime: What is going on with the legalization of pot??!! What should we do here in NC? What do I tell my young son and daughter after
President Obama and Clinton admitted publically they smoked pot? What is the effect of pot? Help!! Confused and Angry Mother.
Dear Mother:
You have asked a lot and I will address first what for most parents is the most important question, “what do I tell my kid?”. My advice is to tell children
they must stay away from pot and other drugs as well. A good reason is that research shows that the kid’s brain will be maturing and changing into their
20s, and can be damaged by drugs in ways they would not want. The issues you raise go back a long way. See the May 2014 issue of Newsmax for a
review of the history of pot, including a discussion of the use of pot in our early colonial days. It was used for rope, clothing and for medicine. Pot was
recognized in the US as a dangerous drug as early 1906 with the federal Pure Food and Drug act. Yet use of pot for the medical use of cancer, epilepsy
and multiple sclerosis patients was and is difficult to reject. An October 2013 Gallup Poll found a majority of Americans favor decriminalization. Some
of that support came from the economists pointing out the inefficiency of spending over $40 billion on the “war on drugs”. Cleanly, Mother, it is confusing
for us as parents and as voters. I suggest you look at the current issue of Science News for as objective and research based review of the issues
as is current. That report cites the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s arguments that pot destroys memory, reduces IQ scores, and causes psychosis,
effects that are especially damaging for teens. Strong research shows the developing neural connections in the teen’s brain are damaged by pot. The
research is clear that as the teen use goes up, intelligence goes down. Also the studies of the states legalizing pot show that for children under 12, admission
to ERs for acute pot intoxication has gone up, and we know that the packaging of the legal pot looks like candy. A final research finding you should
know is that today’s pot is higher in THC (stronger) than past pot. So the dilemma facing you probably is not how to get rid of pot entirely, but how
to control it. For example, proper labeling could be required. For more information on this very important subject see http://bit.ly/SNpotNIDA and
