Stick-Small House on KDH Historic<br />
Landmark Tour- The open<br />
House will be held on <strong>April</strong> 11<br />
from 1- 5 p.m. beginning at the<br />
Kill Devil Hills Town Hall. The<br />
self-guided tour will feature seven<br />
historic homes and will began with<br />
a reception for recent designations<br />
at the Town Hall at 1 p.m. Participants<br />
will be given a map of the<br />
properties and will have from 2-5<br />
p.m. to tour those that are open.<br />
The event is free and open to the<br />
public. The Stick- Small oceanfront<br />
home is located at 1519 North<br />
Virginia Dare Trail and is one of<br />
the original Cape Cod style structures<br />
located in the Croatan Shores<br />
Subdivision better know in the<br />
1930’s as “Millionaire Row.” It was<br />
built in 1939 at the pre-World War<br />
II price of $4,000 and was designed<br />
by Frank Stick, a well-known artist<br />
from New Jersey turned developer.<br />
Croatan Shores was one of the last<br />
subdivisions Frank Stick developed<br />
in Kill Devil Hills before beginning<br />
the construction of the flat tops in<br />
Southern Shores. The structure has<br />
preserved its original pine flooring,<br />
brick fireplace and mantle,<br />
juniper paneling, interior doors and<br />
hardware and stairs. The hurricane<br />
shutters, both top hinged and side<br />
hinged, were typical of the era on<br />
the oceanfront. The Small bought<br />
the home in 1946 and they have<br />
been the caretaker of the property<br />
for over 60 years through 6 generations.<br />
