...have no enemies. Land has always been more than a matter of square meters for the Sudanese and South Sudanese. The multitude of local languages spoken in the two countries include a vast array of words for land. The precise meaning of the word varies from language to language – but the core remains the same: Land is a cherished asset. This has long been recognised by international investors who lease or buy land in South Sudan and Sudan. Meanwhile the two Sudans argue over minerals and borders. But is the answer fewer fences – as the East African idiom suggests? The Niles journalists, who hail from across both countries, have tackled this highly sensitive topic and have no easy answers. But they have at least sown the seeds of fresh ideas in the third edition of The Niles. Hopefully, they will land on fertile ground.

اإلدرييس للملك روجر الثاين ملك صقلية<br />
خرائط للعامل هي األكرث تطوراً يف عرصه.<br />
وظلت خرائطه للنيلني معتمدة ألكرث من<br />
سبعامئة سنة.<br />

أحيا عامل العربيات األملاين سيباستيان<br />
مونسرت الجغرافيا يف أوروبا مبؤلفاته يف<br />
»الكوسموغرافيا«. وما هو اآلن جنوب<br />
السودان كان وقتها يسمى »آزانيا«، وهو<br />
االسم الذي اعتمده متمردو الجنوب يف<br />
ستينيات القرن العرشين.<br />

الخريطة مللك فرنسا لويس الثالث عرش.<br />
وما هو اآلن السودان وجنوب السودان<br />

تتمحور النزاعات عىل األرايض بني السودان وجنوب السودان حول ترسيم الحدود. وتستند املطالبات التاريخية<br />
عىل خرائط أصلية مفرتضة. مع ذلك، تبني الخرائط التي رسمت طوال أكرث من ألف سنة تغري ترسيم الحدود.<br />
لكن الحياة عىل األرض مل تتقيد كثرياً بهذه الحدود املرسومة عىل تلك الخرائط.<br />

األنجلو-مرصية«، و »دائرة النفوذ<br />
الربيطاين« و »مقاطعة الدو« البلجيكية.<br />
ثم أضيف الحقاً اسم »السودان« إليها.<br />
1805 م<br />
نرش رسام الخرائط اإلنجليزي جون كريي<br />
»خريطة جديدة إلفريقيا وفق أحدث<br />
السلطات«. وما يشكل السودان اليوم كان<br />
يسمى »النوبة« و«كردفان«. وما هو اآلن<br />
جنوب السودان كان وقتها ال يزال غري<br />
مستكشف إىل حد كبري من قبل الغرباء.<br />
2005 م<br />
أعد رسام الخرائط الرويس فالدميري<br />
بيسارابوف هذه الخريطة لألمم املتحدة.<br />
وشدد عىل أن »الحدود واألسامء املبينة<br />
والتسميات املستخدمة ال تعني إقراراً أو<br />
قبوالً رسمياً من جانب األمم املتحدة«.
