The multitude of local languages spoken in the two countries include a vast array of words for land. This has long been recognised by international investors who lease or buy land in South Sudan and Sudan. Meanwhile the two Sudans argue over minerals and borders. But is the answer fewer fences – as the East African idiom suggests? The Niles journalists, who hail from across both countries, have tackled this highly sensitive topic and have no easy answers. But they have at least sown the seeds of fresh ideas in the third edition of The Niles. Hopefully, they will land on fertile ground.

ظلت األرض عند أهل السودان وجنوب السودان أكرث من مجرد<br />
أمتار مربعة، فاللغات املحلية الكثرية املحكية يف البلدين تحوي<br />
منظومة ضخمة من الكلامت الدالة عىل األرض. قد يختلف<br />
املعنى الدقيق للكلمة من لغة ألخرى، إال أن الجوهر يبقى نفسه:<br />
األرض أصل غالٍ. وقد أدرك األجانب الذين يستأجرون أو يشرتون<br />
األرايض يف السودان وجنوب السودان هذا األمر منذ زمن طويل.<br />
ويف الوقت ذاته تكرر وقوع اشتباكات بني السودانني بسبب<br />
الرثوات الباطنية والحدود. لكن هل الحل هو تقليل السياج، كام<br />
يوحي املثل الشعبي املتداول يف رشق افريقيا؟ تناول صحافيو<br />
»النيالن«، الذين ينحدرون من أرجاء البلدين، هذا املوضوع<br />
شديد الحساسية، ومل يتوصلوا إىل حلول سهلة. لكنهم عىل األقل<br />
بذروا أفكاراً جديدة يف العدد الثالث من »النيالن«، وكلنا أمل أن<br />
تجد تلك البذور أرضاً خصبة لها.
