dangerous
trees
• By Sophie Cornish
ABOUT 30 of the 100 trees on the South
New Brighton Domain estuary edge
are at risk of falling at any time, says
Coastal-Burwood Community Board
deputy chairman Tim Sintes.
He believes it is a serious health and
safety risk, especially
for people who
use the domain
walkway.
“It’s not if, it’s
when . . . those 30
trees could fall down
today, tomorrow or
in five months time,”
said Mr Sintes.
City council head
Tim Sintes
of parks Brent Smith said the trees are
being monitored.
“One fallen tree on the beach of the
estuary and five large tree stumps have
been removed,” Mr Smith said.
“There is a group of eight dead pine
and macrocarpa trees near the boundary
fence which will be removed due to
safety. Treetech will also remove a
number of broken branches in close
proximity of the main walkway.”
The work is expected to be carried out
within the next two weeks. However
Mr Sintes does not believe that is fast
enough.
YOU DON’T have to be a rocket scientist
to work out the trees in South Brighton
Domain are dangerous (see page 1).
With any luck the tail end of Cyclone
Gita will do its handy work overnight and
the 30 or so trees community board member Tim Sintes says
could fall at any time will be down.
The city council has been working on the problem and more
is to be done over the next fortnight.
The photos tell the story, and the wind and water in the estuary
will move and unbalance them further.
So until they are cut down, stay away.
Needless to say, the trees are rooted.
Call for pedestrian crossing
• By Emily O’Connell
HALSWELL residents may
soon be able to walk across
Ensign St “safely” if a pharmacy
owner’s bid for a pedestrian
crossing gets across the line.
Karen Frater is worried someone
will get hurt crossing the
street outside
her Halswell
Pharmacy due
to speeding
vehicles.
“It is a
50km/h road
Mike Mora
but everyone
seems to be in
a hurry these days, I think that
happens on every road, but then
you’ve got a narrow road and
people who are not necessarily
100 per cent well,” she said.
Mrs Frater said many
residents park at the Halswell
Medical Centre and then cross
the road to the pharmacy to get
medication.
She said the street kerb is
“precarious for someone elderly
or with a walking frame.”
There has also been a few “near
misses” and residents have seen
a need for a crossing on the
street.
“So if we could get something
that slows people down in this
area, that would be a bit better,”
Mrs Frater said. She is also
worried about Oaklands School
and The Lighthouse Pre-school
pupils crossing the road.
She expressed her concerns
at a Halswell Residents’
Association meeting last month.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board chairman
Mike Mora, member Ross
McFarlane, and a city council
staff member paid Mrs Frater
a visit to see the problem firsthand.
As a result, Mr Mora raised
the issue at the community
board meeting last week. The
board asked city council staff
to investigate a pedestrian
crossing.
Mrs Frater is pleased with the
progress and the “proactive”
approach from the residents’
Pipeline will
stop wastewater
in harbour
TWO NEW submarine
pipelines will stop wastewater
being discharged into Lyttelton
Harbour.
Untreated wastewater from
Governors Bay and Diamond
Harbour will be carried through
the pipelines to a new pump station
on Simeon Quay
It will then be piped through
the Lyttelton Tunnel to the
Woolston pump station and onto
the Bromley wastewater treatment
plant, where it will be treated and
discharged out to sea through the
Christchurch Ocean Outfall.
Local iwi carried out a blessing
in Lyttelton last week ahead
of construction work which is
scheduled to start at the end of
February.
Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner
spoke at the blessing, which was
led by Rapaki representative Rewi
Couch.
Cr Turner said the new pipelines
were essential to improve
and future proof wastewater
services in Lyttelton, Governors
Bay and Diamond Harbour, and
the project had important cultural
and environmental benefits.
The specialist mental health
services librarian at Hillmorton
Hospital suffered two debilitating
strokes at the age of six.
Fifty-four years later she is still
seeing progress and wants others
to know they can too.
Although the six-week long
bike ride is “a particularly big
challenge” and costing her
money, Mrs Milne says “I’m up
for it”.
“I believe in raising awareness,
especially for people who have
had a stroke many years ago, and
their families, who maybe feel
stuck and don’t think that they
have a chance of improving.”
“I want to let them know that
I am living proof that you can,”
she said.
Three years ago, Mrs Milne
said she was “a mess”.
After a back surgery, she could
hardly put one foot in front of
another.
Her “good” leg wasn’t working
very well and “all I had left was
my good arm,” she said.
So she bought a Fitbit and
started walking.
“I had no balance and was so
unfit. I began by taking my car
three quarters of the way to work
and walking the other quarter.”
In a year, she was walking
70km a week, her heart rate had
decreased, and she had managed
to walk downstairs, something
that was particularly difficult.
Mrs Milne says initially she
was “terrified” of riding a bike
because of her balance issues.
“I had to persevere and work
really, really hard.”
But now she is off on her ‘Tour
Villa Maria marks centenary
IT HAS now been 100 since the
Sisters of Mercy first welcomed
pupils to Villa Maria College.
The birthday was celebrated
by more than 1500 guests over
the weekend, culminating in a
special mass and morning tea.
“We are proud of our humble
beginnings, we are grateful for
the hard work given freely by the
sisters throughout our history,
and we are delighted to celebrate
this special milestone with our
community,” said principal
Deborah Brosnahan.
“The college was thrilled to
see past pupils travelling from
all over the world to be part of
the celebrations, reconnecting
with their friends, teachers and
school staff. There were stories
shared, memories relived, many
laughs, and moments of quiet
reflection for those who have
passed,” said Ms Brosnahan.
The weekend was opened with
a live show, complete
with music and drama, and
a choir performance by past
pupils.
The show was followed by a
reception outside in the college
courtyard.
On Saturday, the college
hosted a family-friendly fun
Sunday’s special mass and
also a significant part of the
weekend.
“Villa Maria’s centennial
will continue to be celebrated
was a fitting tribute to the
HANGING ON: Tim Sintes said damaged trees in the South New
Brighton Domain are a health and safety concern.
Warning issued over dangerous trees
•From page 1
“They might have a few more
to repair if this bad weather
comes through . . . at this stage,
they aren’t going to do it between
now and the next few days, so
if they all come down, they are
going to have to move quicker
than that.’’
High winds and heavy rainfall
is predicted for Christchurch this
week, as the tail of Cyclone Gita
hits.
There is no signs or taping
around damaged tress to warn
the public of danger.
“I believe there should be,” said
Mr Sintes.
Last month, a 30m tree with
rotten roots toppled into the
Avon River and sunk a Shirley
Boys’ High School rowing boat.
No one was injured.
Mr Sintes said a lot more
damage was done recently by
the king tides and strong
wind.
However, he believes the cause
relates to damage and erosion
along the estuary edge, which
was previously protected before
the earthquakes.
He is pushing for the estuary
edge to be protected from
erosion, which he believes
would stop the trees from being
damaged and falling.
“If you look at some parts of
the estuary edge that weren’t
damaged in the earthquakes,
there’s no problem at all,” said
Mr Sintes
It’s quite obvious that we’re not
talking about climate
change here, we’re talking
about how there was something
to protect them before the
earthquake.
“It got damaged and we’re
paying the consequences now.”
Bid to get multiple sclerosis treatment in Russia
• By Emily O’Connell
KERYN ASHWORTH needs
$100,000 for a treatment which
will enable her to “do the simple
things” in life.
The owner of Sharna’s Doggy
Day Care and Dog Grooming
in Hornby has suffered from
multiple sclerosis for more than
10 years.
The disease, which damages
nerve cells in the brain and
spinal cord, causes symptoms
such as numbness, impairment
of speech and muscular coordination,
blurred vision and
severe fatigue.
Ms Ashworth says a
treatment available in Russia
called hematopoietic stem cell
transplantation could change her
life.
“The drugs I’m on at the
moment cost the Government
$50,000 a year. It’s ridiculous,
absolutely ridiculous, and they’re
not working,” she said.
Ms Ashworth said, in the last
five years and especially last year,
her health has deteriorated.
“There is just no drug and
New Zealand doesn’t do HSCT.
They’re not so much against it,
they just want more proof of
long-term results,” she said.
She is planning to go to Russia
later in the year for treatment.
Natasha Musson and Lisa Fisher,
of Burwood, as well as Northwood’s
Lauren Smith are also
planning to travel to Russia for
the treatment.
The $100,000 will cover return
airfares for herself and her son
Scott, medical costs, accommodation,
and food expenses for five
to seven weeks.
She said Russia has been
preforming the treatment for 18
years and has had “phenomenal
results.”
But it isn’t a magic cure. Ms
Ashworth says it “halts” the
disease and, in some cases, it can
improve a person’s condition.
Brave by rose McGowan
“My life, as you will read, has taken me from one cult to another. BRAVE is the story
of how I fought my way out of these cults and reclaimed my life. I want to help you
do the same.” - Rose McGowan. A revealing memoir and empowering manifesto -
A voice for generations Rose McGowan was born in one cult and came of age in
another, more visible cult: Hollywood. In a strange world where she was continually
on display, stardom soon became a personal nightmare of constant exposure
and sexualisation. Rose escaped into the world of her mind, something she had
done as a child, and into high-profile relationships. Every detail of her personal
life became public, and the realities of an inherently sexist industry emerged
with every script, role, public appearance, and magazine cover. The Hollywood
machine packaged her as a sexualized bombshell, hijacking her image and
identity and marketing them for profit. Hollywood expected Rose to be silent and
cooperative and to stay the path. Instead, she rebelled and asserted her true identity
and voice. She re-emerged unscripted, courageous, victorious, angry, smart,
fierce, unapologetic, controversial, and real as. BRAVE is her raw, honest, and
poignant memoir/manifesto-a no-holds-barred, pull-no-punches account of the
rise of a millennial icon, fearless activist, and unstoppable force for change who
is determined to expose the truth about the entertainment industry, dismantle the
concept of fame, shine a light on a multibillion-dollar business built on systemic
misogyny, and empower people everywhere to wake up and be BRAVE.
Supercharge Your Gut
SUPERCHARGED FOOD by Lee Holmes
Eat your way to better gut health, increased energy and
happier moods. The research is in and the facts are
undeniable: the gut has an immense influence over our
health - directly impacting immunity, weight, sleep, mood and
overall wellbeing. Yet many of us race through life ignoring
this incredible ecosystem, until something wakes us up.
The good news is that healing and maintaining a healthy
gut is not difficult or time consuming. This simple two-day
maintenance plan is supported by deliciously nourishing
recipes, handy tips and information to enable you to enjoy the
countless benefits of a happy, healthy gut, for life.
The Cage by Lloyd Jones
A powerful allegorical tale about humanity and dignity and
the ease with which we can justify brutality. Two mysterious
strangers turn up at a hotel in a small country town. Where
have they come from? Who are they? What catastrophe
are they fleeing? The townspeople want answers, but the
strangers are unable to speak of their trauma. Before long,
wary hospitality shifts to suspicion and fear, and the care of
the men slides into appalling cruelty. Lloyd Jones’s fable-like
novel The Cage is a profound and unsettling novel.
teams to compete overseas.
Archers picked for
transtasman team
• By Andrew King
GREY GOOSE Wing Archery
Society members Julia Harrison
and mother and daughter
shooters Maria and Lauren
Tucker have been selected for
New Zealand teams to compete
overseas.
Canterbury University’s Harrison
along with Burwood’s Lauren
have made the Archery New
Zealand transtasman team.
They will join the 24-strong
team which will shoot against
an Australian team in Morwell,
Victoria, from April 19 to 23.
Lauren, a year 12 student at
Christchurch Girls’ High, will
compete in the cadet women’s
compound section while Harrison
will shoot in the junior
women’s recurve.
Lauren’s mother, Maria, 54, will
shoot for the Archery New Zealand
World Cup team in Shanghai,
China, from April 23 to 29 in
the senior women’s recurve.
All three are members of the
club based on Ferry Rd. Maria
and Lauren are coached by Colin
Tucker, who is the president of
the club, Maria’s husband and
Lauren’s father.
She qualified for the event
for the first time at a meet in
Rotorua last week and will join
the 16-strong team to compete for
a title. The rain and wind made
things difficult for two days, but
Maria persisted and was named
in the side.
“It is pretty awesome. Always
wanted to do it, really quite
stoked about it,” she said.
She has also qualified for the
Oceania Championships in New
Caledonia from July 9 to 13.
Also included in the transtasman
team is North Canterbury’s
Rebecca Jones and Ellesmere’s
Ryley Griffiths.
Hung, Garvey to play
Asia-Pacific champs
PROMISING GOLFER Juliana
Hung will trade in school for
one of the world’s biggest
amateur golf tournaments this
week.
Hung, 15, who plays for Russley,
begins her first round at the
inaugural amateur Asia-Pacific
championship in Singapore tomorrow,
just a day before her
16th birthday.
She will be joined in the
tournament by Amelia
Garvey. The 17-year-old is
ranked No 1 in Canterbury
and ninth in the New Zealand
amateur rankings. She has
just started a gold scholarship
at the University of Southern
California.
They have been included in a
six-strong New Zealand team
made up of Wenyung Keh, Britney
Dryland, Rose Zheng and
Caryn Khoo.
The winner will receive an
invitation to play in two major
championships, the Ricoh
British Open and the ANA
Inspiration.
The winner will also receive an
invitation to play in the HSBC
championship.
The format of amateur Asia-
Pacific championship will be
72 holes of stroke play at the
Sentosa Golf Club with a total of
86 players making the full field,
and about 20 countries being
represented.
YOUNG GUN: Juliana Hung
will be one of the youngest
competitors at the inaugural
amateur Asia-Pacific
championship. (Above) –
Amelia Garvey, who is ranked
No 1 in Canterbury, will join her
at the championship.
In January, Hung won the
Canterbury women’s stroke play
title.
At just 15, Hung is not a
stranger to big tournaments.
Last year, she qualified for the
LPGA Tour’s New Zealand Open
at Windross Farm Golf Club,
Auckland.
Hung missed the half-way
cut after rounds of 74 and 75.
However, her five over par was
better than a number of LPGA
Tour regulars ranked inside the
top 200 in the world.
Garvey also contested the
NZ Open, making the cut and
finishing as the top amateur.
GREAT food
BROUGHT TO YOU BY...
Your fresh food people
LAMB LOIN CHOPS WITH
KUMARA, TOMATO AND
LEMON
Ingredients
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 pinch sea salt
1 pinch black pepper
6 lamb loin chops
2 red onions, freshly sliced
2 cm root ginger, grated
4 garlic cloves
1 red chilli, finely chopped
1 tbsp ras el hanout spice mix
5 tomatoes
800g kumara
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp honey
1 cinnamon stick
500g rice
1 handful coriander leaves
CHICKEN WITH
NECTARINES
Ingredients
1kg chicken breast, cut into
generous bite-sized pieces
25g butter
1 cup chicken stock
½ tsp fresh thyme, finely
chopped
½ tsp fresh rosemary, finely
chopped
1 tsp curry powder, mild
1 tbsp cornflour, or arrowroot
dissolved in 2 tablespoons of
cold water
½ cup cashew nuts, chopped
3 nectarines, peeled, sliced
1 pinch salt and pepper
Directions
Melt the butter and brown the
chicken pieces.
Add the chicken stock and
the herbs and poach the
chicken gently until cooked. Set
aside.
Add the curry powder and the
dissolved cornflour to the liquid
and warm to thicken.
Add the nectarine slices and
the chicken pieces to the sauce
to warm through.
Season with the salt and
pepper.
Finish with a squeeze of fresh
lime or lemon to zing up the
flavours.
Garnish with the cashews.
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 180 deg C.
On an element heat the olive oil
in a flameproof casserole dish
over a medium-high heat. Season
the lamb chops liberally with salt
and pepper, and brown on both
sides. Remove the chops and set
aside.
Drain off all but one tbsp of
oil from the casserole dish and
reduce the heat to medium. Add
the onions and cook, stirring,
until softened, about 5min. Add
ginger, garlic, chilli and ras al
hanout, and stir for a couple of
minutes until fragrant. Add the
tomatoes and stir over the heat
for another 5min.
Add the browned lamp chops,
kumara, lemon juice, soy sauce,
honey and cinnamon. Pour in
about 400ml water, enough to
cover the chops. Put the lid on
and cook in the oven for two
hours.
Uncover and skim off any
excess fat from the surface. If the
sauce is too thin, reduce over
a medium-high heat for a few
minutes. Adjust the seasoning -
you may need an extra squeeze
of lemon juice. Serve with
steamed rice and some coriander
leaves.
Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with
a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and
senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. The images show
how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back
muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain
are the red areas in the drawings), a knot
in a muscle on the back of the shoulder
blade can give a deep pain in the front of
the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way
near the groin can give an ache in the knee
(especially at night in bed).
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
and wellbeing.
The same lack of movement can be the
reason for your knee pain or your shoulder
pain and the same few treatments could
make a huge difference for you.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the joint, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
SHOULDER
PAIN
KNEE PAIN
balance. They teach a movement sequence
that stretches the joint in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
HIP PAIN
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated than
surgery. In very few treatments the client
will know if it is going to work for them or
not, without financial commitment.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door and there is ample
parking. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Modern diet
leads to illness!
It’s not what you eat but what you absorb
Two Australian Naturopaths Stephen
& Shane noticed at the end of the 20th
century more & more of their patients
were experiencing gut, bowel & digestive
issues that were often leading to more
serious chronic health conditions. Being
Naturopaths they wanted to find what was
going wrong & began extensive research.
What they found was although their clients
were generally eating good food they were
not obtaining all the nutrients required
for good health from this food. Further
research showed one of the main problems
was the digestive system, “it’s not what you
eat but what you absorb.” Another wellknown
problem is the soils the crops are
grown in have been depleted of many trace
elements & other nutrients that are known
to be essential for good health & therefore
the crops & food are also depleted. If we do
not obtain all the nutrients we require the
body will compensate to some degree but
a lack of too many nutrients will eventually
lead to health issues.
Based on this they developed VITAL
GREENS, a nutrient dense powdered
formula that provides superior absorption
as well as comprehensive nutrition. They
decided on a powdered formula that
could be made as a great tasting drink
because liquid nutrition is the easiest
way for the body to absorb nutrients
especially if digestive issues are present.
The formula provides 76 vital ingredients
that work together in synergy optimising
each other’s absorption & benefits. Vital
Greens contains a carefully balanced blend
of nutritionally rich greens, vegetables,
fruits, minerals, vitamins, essential fatty
acids, plant & herbal extracts, superfoods,
powerful antioxidants, probiotics, essential
amino acids, digestive enzymes, fibre plus a
uniquely alkalising pea protein. It provides
superior nutrition to a multivitamin &
anyone will benefit from it. It is designed to
provide all the nutrients the body requires
for good health. It is also ideal for those in
poor health, those recovering from injury
or sickness, children, athletes, poor eaters
& the elderly. It is also suitable for people
with dietary restrictions & is gluten, wheat
& dairy free. Vital Greens will help remove
toxic waste from the body while supporting
mood, skin problems improving, less
sickness, improved eyesight & overall
better more optimum health.
Are you Magnesium
deficient?
Minerals are the building blocks of
good health. Some minerals are only
needed in trace amounts where others
like magnesium are need in much larger
amounts & on a regular basis to prevent
deficiency & maintain optimum health. A
large number of us do not obtain sufficient
magnesium from our diet & may notice
some of the common signs of deficiency.
Some of the more common symptoms that
may be caused by insufficient magnesium
are: leg & muscle cramps, twitches, muscle
pain, muscle fatigue & weakness, tremors
of hands, blurred vision, restlessness, poor
sleep, raised &/or unstable blood pressure,
poor circulation, irregular heartbeat,
shortness of breath, swallowing problems,
dizziness, headaches, anxiety, agitation,
irritability, seizures, poor concentration &
many more.
Although many young people now show
signs of magnesium deficiency symptoms
generally worsen as we age due to our
digestive system being less efficient. Taking
a magnesium supplement of sufficient
strength may be a sensible option to top
up our vital magnesium levels. Not all
magnesium supplements however are
well absorbed by everyone. Luckily a new
marine sourced magnesium has been
found that offers good levels of absorbable
magnesium as well as many trace nutrients
that are low in the diet but essential for
good health.
FANCY 'a side' of ocean view with your
brekkie? Well it's available on the menu at the
Pierview Restaurant.
Located upstairs in the New Brighton Club,
the Pierview Restaurant has always been a
popular destination for dining and private
functions. Offering uninterrupted views of
beach, pier and coastline, the view is a
stunning accompaniment to any occasion.
Spectacular summer weather in Canterbury
have seen an increase in people enjoying the
beach side and to add to the seaside attraction
the Pierview is now open Sundays from
10.30am to 2pm for brunch.
Offering all the expected scrumptious
breakfast/brunch delights, the menu also
caters to children.
Apart from Sunday Brunch the Pierview is
open from 5.30pm Friday to Sunday serving
quality, yet very affordable, a la carte dining.
The last Sunday of the month has turned
into a tradition with the Pierview’s ‘all you can
eat’ Buffet. Priced at just $25 per person,
tables fill fast on buffet nights, so bookings are
essential. And on all the other Sundays, there’s
a choice of the regular dinner menu,
blackboard specials, or take advantage of the
great value $25 set three course Sunday
special.
Downstairs the club's Tramshed Bistro is
open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to
Saturday with a great selection of meals, light
meals, and snacks.
As well as great dining, the New Brighton
Club provides regular live music, big screen
sport and rugby, gaming room, plus social
and sporting sections. Enquiries to become a
member are most welcome.
