New Brighton Domain estuary edge 

are at risk of falling at any time, says 

Coastal-Burwood Community Board 

deputy chairman Tim Sintes. 

He believes it is a serious health and 

safety risk, especially 

for people who 

use the domain 

walkway. 

“It’s not if, it’s 

when . . . those 30 

trees could fall down 

today, tomorrow or 

in five months time,” 

said Mr Sintes. 

City council head

of parks Brent Smith said the trees are 

being monitored. 

“One fallen tree on the beach of the 

estuary and five large tree stumps have 

been removed,” Mr Smith said. 

“There is a group of eight dead pine 

and macrocarpa trees near the boundary 

fence which will be removed due to 

safety. Treetech will also remove a 

number of broken branches in close 

proximity of the main walkway.” 

The work is expected to be carried out 

within the next two weeks. However 

Mr Sintes does not believe that is fast 

enough.

YOU DON’T have to be a rocket scientist 

to work out the trees in South Brighton 

Domain are dangerous (see page 1). 

With any luck the tail end of Cyclone 

Gita will do its handy work overnight and 

the 30 or so trees community board member Tim Sintes says 

could fall at any time will be down. 

The city council has been working on the problem and more 

is to be done over the next fortnight. 

The photos tell the story, and the wind and water in the estuary 

will move and unbalance them further. 

So until they are cut down, stay away. 

Needless to say, the trees are rooted.

soon be able to walk across 

Ensign St “safely” if a pharmacy 

owner’s bid for a pedestrian 

crossing gets across the line.

Mrs Frater said many 

residents park at the Halswell 

Medical Centre and then cross 

the road to the pharmacy to get 

medication. 

She said the street kerb is 

“precarious for someone elderly 

or with a walking frame.” 

There has also been a few “near 

misses” and residents have seen 

a need for a crossing on the 

street. 

“So if we could get something 

that slows people down in this 

area, that would be a bit better,” 

Mrs Frater said. She is also 

worried about Oaklands School 

and The Lighthouse Pre-school 

pupils crossing the road. 

She expressed her concerns 

at a Halswell Residents’ 

Association meeting last month.

a visit to see the problem firsthand. 

As a result, Mr Mora raised

Pipeline will 

stop wastewater 

discharge 

in harbour 

TWO NEW submarine 

pipelines will stop wastewater 

being discharged into Lyttelton 

Harbour. 

Untreated wastewater from 

Governors Bay and Diamond 

Harbour will be carried through 

the pipelines to a new pump station 

on Simeon Quay 

It will then be piped through 

the Lyttelton Tunnel to the 

Woolston pump station and onto 

the Bromley wastewater treatment 

plant, where it will be treated and 

discharged out to sea through the 

Christchurch Ocean Outfall. 

Local iwi carried out a blessing 

in Lyttelton last week ahead 

of construction work which is 

scheduled to start at the end of 

February. 

Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner 

spoke at the blessing, which was 

led by Rapaki representative Rewi 

Couch. 

Cr Turner said the new pipelines 

were essential to improve 

and future proof wastewater 

services in Lyttelton, Governors 

Bay and Diamond Harbour, and 

the project had important cultural 

and environmental benefits.

services librarian at Hillmorton 

Hospital suffered two debilitating 

strokes at the age of six. 

Fifty-four years later she is still 

seeing progress and wants others 

to know they can too. 

Although the six-week long 

bike ride is “a particularly big 

challenge” and costing her 

money, Mrs Milne says “I’m up 

for it”. 

“I believe in raising awareness, 

especially for people who have 

had a stroke many years ago, and 

their families, who maybe feel 

stuck and don’t think that they 

have a chance of improving.” 

“I want to let them know that 

I am living proof that you can,” 

she said. 

Three years ago, Mrs Milne 

said she was “a mess”. 

After a back surgery, she could 

hardly put one foot in front of 

another. 

Her “good” leg wasn’t working 

very well and “all I had left was 

my good arm,” she said. 

So she bought a Fitbit and 

started walking. 

“I had no balance and was so 

unfit. I began by taking my car 

three quarters of the way to work 

and walking the other quarter.” 

In a year, she was walking 

70km a week, her heart rate had 

decreased, and she had managed 

to walk downstairs, something 

that was particularly difficult. 

Mrs Milne says initially she 

was “terrified” of riding a bike 

because of her balance issues. 

“I had to persevere and work 

really, really hard.” 

But now she is off on her ‘Tour

Villa Maria marks centenary 

IT HAS now been 100 since the 

Sisters of Mercy first welcomed 

pupils to Villa Maria College. 

The birthday was celebrated 

by more than 1500 guests over 

the weekend, culminating in a 

special mass and morning tea. 

“We are proud of our humble 

beginnings, we are grateful for 

the hard work given freely by the 

sisters throughout our history, 

and we are delighted to celebrate 

this special milestone with our 

community,” said principal 

Deborah Brosnahan. 

“The college was thrilled to 

see past pupils travelling from 

all over the world to be part of 

the celebrations, reconnecting 

with their friends, teachers and 

school staff. There were stories 

shared, memories relived, many 

laughs, and moments of quiet 

reflection for those who have 

passed,” said Ms Brosnahan. 

The weekend was opened with 

a live show, complete 

with music and drama, and 

a choir performance by past 

pupils. 

The show was followed by a 

reception outside in the college 

courtyard. 

On Saturday, the college 

hosted a family-friendly fun 

day, functions for past college

throughout 2018, but this weekend 

was a fitting tribute to the 

college, its founders and all who 

have called Villa home,” said Ms

TOILET REPAIRS COSTLY 

Contractors have had to fix 

the Addington Park toilets six 

times in the last six months.

had been made, the toilet roll 

holders were vandalised and the

had been damaged. It had cost 

$1424. Complaints had also been 

received about litter outside and 

the cleanliness, which had been

A climbing boulder is to be

they aren’t going to do it between 

now and the next few days, so 

if they all come down, they are 

going to have to move quicker 

than that.’’ 

High winds and heavy rainfall 

is predicted for Christchurch this 

week, as the tail of Cyclone Gita 

hits. 

There is no signs or taping 

around damaged tress to warn 

the public of danger. 

“I believe there should be,” said 

Mr Sintes. 

Last month, a 30m tree with 

rotten roots toppled into the 

Avon River and sunk a Shirley 

Boys’ High School rowing boat. 

No one was injured. 

Mr Sintes said a lot more 

damage was done recently by 

the king tides and strong 

wind. 

However, he believes the cause 

relates to damage and erosion 

along the estuary edge, which 

was previously protected before 

the earthquakes. 

He is pushing for the estuary 

edge to be protected from 

erosion, which he believes 

would stop the trees from being 

damaged and falling. 

“If you look at some parts of 

the estuary edge that weren’t 

damaged in the earthquakes, 

there’s no problem at all,” said 

Mr Sintes 

It’s quite obvious that we’re not 

talking about climate 

change here, we’re talking 

about how there was something 

to protect them before the 

earthquake. 

“It got damaged and we’re 

paying the consequences now.” 

Bid to get multiple sclerosis treatment in Russia

KERYN ASHWORTH needs 

$100,000 for a treatment which 

will enable her to “do the simple 

things” in life. 

The owner of Sharna’s Doggy 

Day Care and Dog Grooming 

in Hornby has suffered from 

multiple sclerosis for more than 

10 years. 

The disease, which damages 

nerve cells in the brain and 

spinal cord, causes symptoms 

such as numbness, impairment 

of speech and muscular coordination, 

blurred vision and 

severe fatigue. 

Ms Ashworth says a 

treatment available in Russia 

called hematopoietic stem cell 

transplantation could change her 

life. 

“The drugs I’m on at the 

moment cost the Government 

$50,000 a year. It’s ridiculous, 

absolutely ridiculous, and they’re 

not working,” she said. 

Ms Ashworth said, in the last 

five years and especially last year, 

her health has deteriorated. 

“There is just no drug and 

New Zealand doesn’t do HSCT. 

They’re not so much against it, 

they just want more proof of 

long-term results,” she said. 

She is planning to go to Russia 

later in the year for treatment. 

Natasha Musson and Lisa Fisher, 

of Burwood, as well as Northwood’s 

Lauren Smith are also 

planning to travel to Russia for 

the treatment. 

The $100,000 will cover return 

airfares for herself and her son 

Scott, medical costs, accommodation, 

and food expenses for five 

to seven weeks. 

She said Russia has been 

preforming the treatment for 18 

years and has had “phenomenal 

results.” 

But it isn’t a magic cure. Ms 

Ashworth says it “halts” the 

disease and, in some cases, it can 

improve a person’s condition.

New Zealand teams to compete 

overseas. 

Canterbury University’s Harrison 

along with Burwood’s Lauren 

have made the Archery New 

Zealand transtasman team. 

They will join the 24-strong 

team which will shoot against 

an Australian team in Morwell, 

Victoria, from April 19 to 23. 

Lauren, a year 12 student at 

Christchurch Girls’ High, will 

compete in the cadet women’s 

compound section while Harrison 

will shoot in the junior 

women’s recurve. 

Lauren’s mother, Maria, 54, will 

shoot for the Archery New Zealand 

World Cup team in Shanghai, 

China, from April 23 to 29 in 

the senior women’s recurve. 

All three are members of the 

club based on Ferry Rd. Maria 

and Lauren are coached by Colin 

Tucker, who is the president of 

the club, Maria’s husband and 

Lauren’s father. 

She qualified for the event 

for the first time at a meet in 

Rotorua last week and will join 

the 16-strong team to compete for 

a title. The rain and wind made 

things difficult for two days, but 

Maria persisted and was named 

in the side. 

“It is pretty awesome. Always 

wanted to do it, really quite 

stoked about it,” she said. 

She has also qualified for the 

Oceania Championships in New 

Caledonia from July 9 to 13. 

Also included in the transtasman 

team is North Canterbury’s 

Rebecca Jones and Ellesmere’s 

Ryley Griffiths.

Asia-Pacific champs 

PROMISING GOLFER Juliana 

Hung will trade in school for 

one of the world’s biggest 

amateur golf tournaments this 

week. 

Hung, 15, who plays for Russley, 

begins her first round at the 

inaugural amateur Asia-Pacific 

championship in Singapore tomorrow, 

just a day before her 

16th birthday. 

She will be joined in the 

tournament by Amelia 

Garvey. The 17-year-old is 

ranked No 1 in Canterbury 

and ninth in the New Zealand 

amateur rankings. She has 

just started a gold scholarship 

at the University of Southern 

California. 

They have been included in a 

six-strong New Zealand team 

made up of Wenyung Keh, Britney 

Dryland, Rose Zheng and 

Caryn Khoo. 

The winner will receive an 

invitation to play in two major 

championships, the Ricoh 

British Open and the ANA 

Inspiration. 

The winner will also receive an 

invitation to play in the HSBC 

championship. 

The format of amateur Asia- 

Pacific championship will be 

72 holes of stroke play at the 

Sentosa Golf Club with a total of 

86 players making the full field, 

and about 20 countries being 

represented.

NZ Open, making the cut and 

finishing as the top amateur.

LAMB LOIN CHOPS WITH 

KUMARA, TOMATO AND 

LEMON 

Ingredients 

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 

1 pinch sea salt 

1 pinch black pepper 

6 lamb loin chops 

2 red onions, freshly sliced 

2 cm root ginger, grated 

4 garlic cloves 

1 red chilli, finely chopped 

1 tbsp ras el hanout spice mix 

5 tomatoes 

800g kumara 

2 tbsp lemon juice 

1 tbsp soy sauce 

1 tbsp honey 

1 cinnamon stick 

500g rice 

1 handful coriander leaves 

CHICKEN WITH 

NECTARINES 

Ingredients 

1kg chicken breast, cut into 

generous bite-sized pieces 

25g butter 

1 cup chicken stock 

½ tsp fresh thyme, finely 

chopped 

½ tsp fresh rosemary, finely 

chopped 

1 tsp curry powder, mild 

1 tbsp cornflour, or arrowroot 

dissolved in 2 tablespoons of 

cold water 

½ cup cashew nuts, chopped 

3 nectarines, peeled, sliced 

1 pinch salt and pepper 

Directions 

Melt the butter and brown the 

chicken pieces. 

Add the chicken stock and 

the herbs and poach the 

chicken gently until cooked. Set 

aside. 

Add the curry powder and the 

dissolved cornflour to the liquid 

and warm to thicken. 

Add the nectarine slices and 

the chicken pieces to the sauce 

to warm through. 

Season with the salt and 

pepper. 

Finish with a squeeze of fresh 

lime or lemon to zing up the 

flavours. 

Garnish with the cashews. 

Instructions 

Preheat the oven to 180 deg C. 

On an element heat the olive oil 

in a flameproof casserole dish 

over a medium-high heat. Season 

the lamb chops liberally with salt 

and pepper, and brown on both 

sides. Remove the chops and set 

aside. 

Drain off all but one tbsp of 

oil from the casserole dish and 

reduce the heat to medium. Add 

the onions and cook, stirring, 

until softened, about 5min. Add 

ginger, garlic, chilli and ras al 

hanout, and stir for a couple of 

minutes until fragrant. Add the 

tomatoes and stir over the heat 

for another 5min. 

Add the browned lamp chops, 

kumara, lemon juice, soy sauce, 

honey and cinnamon. Pour in 

about 400ml water, enough to 

cover the chops. Put the lid on 

and cook in the oven for two 

hours. 

Uncover and skim off any 

excess fat from the surface. If the 

sauce is too thin, reduce over 

a medium-high heat for a few 

minutes. Adjust the seasoning - 

you may need an extra squeeze 

of lemon juice. Serve with 

steamed rice and some coriander 

leaves.

Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or 

could it be mainly my muscles? 

The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with 

a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and 

senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints. 

Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests 

that a major part of the pain could be due 

to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. 

“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason 

for the pain may be the muscles around 

the joint,” she explains. The images show 

how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back 

muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain 

are the red areas in the drawings), a knot 

in a muscle on the back of the shoulder 

blade can give a deep pain in the front of 

the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way 

near the groin can give an ache in the knee 

(especially at night in bed). 

Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year 

old client with severe arthritis who walked 

with a stick, told her, “I will end up in 

a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight 

through my right leg due to pain in my hip 

and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she 

was walking with her stick but without the 

severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was 

one of the factors that made her muscles 

spasm but the other was that older people 

move less and the flexed position the hip 

is in when we sit is particularly bad for 

the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that 

although the client was 89 and could have 

been “given up on” or told to live with the 

pain, she made a difference to her health 

and wellbeing. 

The same lack of movement can be the 

reason for your knee pain or your shoulder 

pain and the same few treatments could 

make a huge difference for you.

The client also gets a home exercise 

program designed to mobilize and stretch 

the joint, strengthen the important core 

muscles and increase general strength and

In many cases having the muscles

If severe arthritis is the underlying cause, 

some maintenance therapy may be 

necessary, but that is often more affordable 

and, for older patients, better tolerated than 

surgery. In very few treatments the client 

will know if it is going to work for them or 

not, without financial commitment.
