Brown, Hammill in top form
THIS Saturday the golf club was a hive of
activity again with the annual GHS golf day
taking place.
The event drew just over 100 players
including a junior section that played nine
holes.
The organising committee of the day can
be commended on a slick, well-organised
golf day. The junior section was probably
the most pleasing part and is something
the golf committee would like to see
included in every fundraiser golf day.
The format for the day was a betterball
Stableford and the prize winners were as
follows: 1st – Garry Brown and Martin
Hammill; 2nd – H Bezuidenhout and John
de Villiers; 3rd – Johnny Poyo and Nzame
Rawula; 4th – Keith Wood and Aubrey
Ferreira; 5th– Johnny Poyo amd Mike
Saleni; 6th – Tallie Fourie and JP Michau;
7th – Apols Booysen and Vusumzi
Mandindi; 8th – Erin Barraud and Chloe
Buss; 9th – Vusumzi Njoli and Elijah Dayi;
10th – Pieter Steyn and Phandile Matoto.
Closest to the pins: 5th – Ana Taggart,
8th – Garry Brown, 11th – Thembisile
Matoto, 16th – Wayne Bennett, Ladies
longest drive – Ana Taggart, men’s longest
player closest to the pin – Josh Bosch.
Second defeat for Breakers
MAXWELL LEVINE
STAR of Hope have set
the Super 12 scene alight
and brought a new
dimension to the
competition while
B r e a ke r s ’ chances of
About 300
p arkrun
reaching the knockout
stages have suffered a
setback after their
second defeat in three
outings.
Breakers are now fifth
in Group A of the Eastern
Cape Super 12
championship log with
four points. The Mlungisi
side were beaten 26-17
by Star of Hope in
Uitenhage last weekend.
Star of Hope top the
group with 11 points after
two wins and a draw in
the washed out match
against Ntlaza.
Mathematically, Breakers
can still reach the
semifinals but it will
mean the top two teams
must lose all their
remaining matches and
with Gardens regaining
form it should be a
three-horse race for the
two top spots, with Parks
also unbeaten.
Gardens got back to
winning ways with a
53-12 thumping of Ntlaza
Lions. The defending
the year-long event. Upcoming events:
February 17 – Windhoek pairs; February 23
– SPCA fun run (parkrun route); February
24 – SPCA golf day; March 3 – Medal
grand prix; March 4 – Imbono Architects
Queenstown ladies’ open (course will be
closed for casual golf); March 10 – Get
Ahead golf day; March 17 – QCOBA golf
day; March 24 – Queenstown closed
champs, a one day event, with more details
to follow on a new exciting event format in
st o r e .
WINNERS: Winners of the GHS golf day,
from left, Garry Brown and Martin
Hammill flank principal Theo Anaxagoras
champs were in an
unforgiving mood and
made clear their
intentions of fighting for
a knockout spot after
suffering a surprise loss
in their first match
against Star of Hope.
These should be
worrying signs for
Breakers, who face them
this weekend. Parks
romped to a five-pointer
in their 41-15 demolition
job of Buffs to move to
second in the group.
In Group B, Swallows
continued their
impressive form and
made it three out of three
with a clinical 33-8 win
over Berlin Tigers. One
more win and Swallows
could be the first team to
reach the semis, but a
week off will keep the
champagne on ice.
Harlequins defeated
Despatch 39-26 to move
to second on the log on
10 points. Kruisfontein
heaped further misery on
a deflated Police outfit
with a 34-24 win. The
Bobbies have been way
below par this season
and the former winners
and 2017 finalists have
already been dumped out
of the competition.
Four matches take
place tomorrow with
Breakers facing their
hoodoo team, Gardens, at
Mlungisi Stadium.
Breakers have never
beaten the Uitenhage
outfit, suffering
numerous defeats at
Mlungisi Stadium and
away. Known to travel
with their passionate
support, Gardens are on
a mission to revive their
hopes for a semifinal
spot with Breakers only
playing for pride. It’s a
top-of-the-table clash
with Park hosting Star of
Hope. Either result will be
good for Gardens who
are hot on their heels if
either team drops points.
Police host Tigers in
the battle of the bottom
teams with pride the only
thing at stake.
Both Border teams
Hangklip High School
Border (BCMJA) at the Western Cape Judo
Open in George. At this international event,
achieved gold medals for both. At an awards
evening hosted by BCMJA, Anje was awarded
a trophy and a certificate for her SA ranking
Anje’s official SA ranking is first in Group 3
a rebuilding Despatch
