IT IS FOUR days out from Selwyn’s
are likely to sell out.
A capacity 10,000 crowd is expected
for Selwyn Sounds at Lincoln
Domain on Saturday.
Australian rock icon Jimmy
Barnes will headline the show. The
Feelers, Mental as Anything, Stellar,
The Mockers, The Narcs, The Lady
Killers and The Warratahs will also
Promotor David Parlane said if
people think they can walk up on
the day to buy a ticket they may be
unlucky.
The day-long festival will include
more than 30 international food
stalls.
Mr Parlane said while last year
ran virtually seamless, some changes
have been made – including
doubling the amount of Portaloos to
decrease waiting lines.
Artists will begin arriving in from
Thursday.
Barnes will fly in on Saturday
morning after playing a gig in
Adelaide the night before.
SELWYN SOUNDS is now locked in as an
iconic event in the district.
It’s on again at Lincoln on Saturday and
congratulations must go to promoter David
Parlane and his team for building on the
success of last year’s festival.
The day benefits the district in terms of profile and spending.
There’s plenty of bars and cafes in the area to head to after – or
before – the gig.
But there’s another big event on Saturday, well for me anyway
– the 23rd Deserthead Classic (golf) at Ellesmere.
It’s so named because a number of the original players were
follicly challenged, me excepted!
Needless to say, I’ve been tearing my hair out over where to be
She said Maddie,14, has a
Bates breaks
more records
•From page 1
“I was ecstatic to break the
records as it was my last chance to
achieve these, due to the fact that
I am in my last year at Christchurch
Girls’ High School,” she said.
In January Bates broke threetime
Olympian and Commonwealth
Games bronze medallist
Helen Lesslie (nee Norfolk) longstanding
Canterbury record in the
pool in the 200m individual medley
at the Swimming Canterbury
West Coast championships.
Bridge takes shape
A new bridge over Liffey Stream in Lincoln is expected to
be competed at the end of next month. The three-year
staged project began last year with the construction of the
pedestrian link adjacent to the former country club – which
is now the Lincoln Primary School junior satellite campus.
The timber bridge and associated pathway links are the
second stage of works to be undertaken. Hunter Civil Project
Management and Construction built the bridge off-site. The
32m structure was placed by a crane in three sections, onto
four central piles. The district council’s land development
project manager Phil Millar said the Lincoln Community
Committee has been very supportive of increasing the
accessibility and linkages through the Esplanade Reserve,
and that the additional linkages will have huge recreational
benefits for the community. “It’s been fantastic for the district
council to work closely with the community committee on
this project,” he said.
Winds cause carnage
SIX PEOPLE had a lucky escape
when a campervan collided with
a car during strong winds near
Birdlings Flat on Sunday.
The campervan overturned
about 4.30pm on Sunday on
Christchurch Akaroa Rd.
Police said the campervan was
blown across the road collecting
a car on the way and ending up
on its side through a fence.
Two vehicles were badly damaged
and six people were left
with cuts bruises.
Police said the interior of the
campervan looked like a “bombsite”.
There was tomato sauce up
the walls and food everywhere,
along with smashed plates and
glasses.
Big plans for Springfield station
NEW START: The Springfield Railway Station Cafe re-opened
last month and is run by Gayl and Barry Lindon.
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A NEW community group has
formed to give Springfield’s
historic railway station a makeover.
The Friends of Springfield Station
plans to beautify its station
– in a bid to transform it into a
community hub.
The group is planning to work
with KiwiRail and Rail Heritage
Trust of New Zealand to
paint the station and tidy up its
gardens.
Restoration work will include
painting the building’s
woodwork, veranda, doors and
window sills.
Founder Simon Williams said
the aim is to turn it into a community
area for people to come
and “hang out.”
“I think it is worth doing because
it is part of the historical
fabric of Springfield, which was
really put there for the railway,”
he said.
The group was formed after
Christmas and is made up of
about 20 members.
The station is already
beginning to grow with The
Springfield Railway Station Cafe
re-opening last month in the
station’s old refreshment rooms.
The cafe’s leasee Heather Valphy
makes up cheeseboards for
the TranzAlpine at the station
each day.
The station already has a collectables
shop, personal trainer
and plant seller.
A monthly farmer’s market
is also planned to run in the
future.
The station has operated in the
township since the 1880s.
It was originally located in the
centre of Springfield – which
is now known as Tramway
Reserve.
In 1923, the railway station
was moved to its current
location off King St so a larger
marshalling yard could be built
following the opening of the
Otira Tunnel.
“Springfield used to be a really
big railway centre . . . they used
to have a particular type of locomotive
stationed at Springfield.
I think there was something
like 70 people who serviced the
system,” Mr Williams said.
He said 12 white railway
houses known as the “white
city” used to be located along
the line.
The railway station was rebuilt
using pink summerhill stone in
1966 after the old station burnt
down.
Mr Williams said while pink
summerhill stone is not “everybody’s
favourite building material
in 2018”, the Rail Heritage
Trust felt it was a voyage too far
to repaint the building material.
He said he thinks when the
steam locomotives disappeared
at the end of the 1960s people
thought the railway age was
over.
But Mr Williams said there
are still a lot of railway men in
the town and its heritage is not
being celebrated enough.
The group will lodge a proposal
with KiwiRail in the hopes
of securing funding for the
project.
As part of his proposal, Mr
Williams would like to get
KiwiRail to agree to stopping
the TranzAlpine in Springfield
for an extended break.
Currently, it only stops to
allow passengers to board or
disembark the train and to pick
up the cheeseboards.
Court appearance
for second youth
in ‘drown in’ case
A SECOND youth has appeared
in court in the Rolleston ‘drown
him’ case.
A 15-year-old appeared in the
youth court last Tuesday jointly
charged with aggravated robbery.
A 16-year-old appeared on
February 13.
Both have denied the charge
and will reappear in March.
The alleged robbery took place
after a fireworks display on
November 4.
A 15-year-old victim was
allegedly beaten and then
dragged to a water race where
his head was held under the
water.
His assailants chanted “drown
him, drown him” during the attack,
police allege.
Police are not seeking anyone
else in relation to the incident
which left the victim with a
nasty gash on his face that
required stitches and a night in
hospital.
An Independent Police Conduct
Authority investigation
Adams tackled over impact
of motorway comments
• By Georgia O’Connor-
Harding
SELWYN MP Amy Adams
has been told she is wrong
to claim the New Zealand
Transport Agency is not
monitoring traffic volume
on West Melton roads.
Ms Adams recently
released a statement saying
she is concerned about the
impact the Christchurch
Southern Motorway Stage
2 will have on West Melton
roads.
She said she is disappointed
NZTA has not
carried out transport
modelling on roads which
will be affected by the new
motorway.
It follows a recent meeting
she had with NZTA
regarding her concerns.
However, NZTA’s
regional relationships
director Jim Harland said
it is not correct to say traffic
volumes have not been
monitored.
“Our traffic count
database, which covers all
highways, is monitored
regularly by transport
planning staff to identify
when issues may arise on
the network,” he said.
Amy Adams
Ms Adams said while
she is a supporter of
CSM2, she is worried
about Weedons Ross Rd
and the intersection of
the same road with State
Highway 73.
“I would have assumed
that NZTA would have
done modelling on the
impact of CSM2 on surrounding
roads using current
data but this appears
to not have been the case.’’
Mr Harland said the
West Melton intersection
has been identified and as
a result NZTA is planning
an intersection upgrade in
the next three year transport
programme.
This is to improve safety
and access as a response
to residential development
and traffic growth at the
intersection.
Mr Harland said transport
modelling of the
intersection will occur
when the project is being
designed and planned.
But Ms Adams said
NZTA has not updated its
traffic volume data since
2000 – in spite of Selwyn
experiencing some of
the fastest growth in the
country.
“This leaves West Melton
residents and drivers who
commute via this intersection
daily without any
assurance that there is an
adequate plan in place to
manage the growing traffic
volumes at this location
and mitigate health and
safety risks for drivers and
pedestrians.
Gary Doyle responds to
Selwyn Times’ article
on Wigram MP Megan
Woods and Minister for
Sage meeting with
residents over quarrying
issues in Templeton
The inference is that Megan
Woods and Eugene Sage met
with Weedons residents. I can
assure that neither person
has had any contact with the
Weedons Resident’s Association.
They may have been in touch
with the Templeton residents
but not with us, and as the
proposed quarry is in the
Selwyn District and not the
Christchurch city then surely
the local residents association
should be involved with any
such discussions.
For these two people to say
that they have listened firsthand
to local residents concerns
is not correct, and gives
the Weedons people a false
impression as to how things
are progressing.
Both Weedons and Templeton
have had a joint meeting
with Fulton Hogan and a
channel for dialogue has been
opened, however, as the firm
has not finalised its plans yet it
is to early to make an assumptions
as to how things will
progress.
FINANCE:
Abbeyfield
volunteers
have asked
the district
council to
write off a
loan to the
complex.
It is obvious that
John Morten has strong
feelings that council
should not be inundated
with appeals from people
with strong feelings about
issues. I agree with him that
the best form of protection for
council is to act decisively in
the Abbeyfield situation, and
establish a firm precedent that
this is the way council will
operate.
Ellesmere College
principal appointed
IRISHMAN Ronan Bass
has been appointed new
principal at Ellesmere
College.
He will start his new role
at the school at the beginning
of term 2.
It comes after the
school’s previous principal
Gavin Kidd resigned to
take on a new position as
the director of the Dunedin
Secondary Schools
Partnership Charitable
Trust.
Following his resignation,
the school carried out
a survey of students, staff
and community to try and
identify the characteristics
they wanted to see in their
new principal.
The board narrowed its
selection down to three
candidates.
Each candidate met with
the school’s student senior
leaders and head students before
formal interviews were
carried out by the board.
Mr Bass is currently
the deputy principal of
Hillcrest High School in
Hamilton.
Growing up in a small
rural village on the east
HORORATA IS planning
the night sky.
It will feature music,
food and wine the district
has on offer, crafts stalls
and family entertainment.
Hororata Community
Trust executive officer
Cindy Driscoll said the
imagination with more
than 12,000 following the
festival on Facebook.
APPOINTED: Ellesmere College’s new principal
Ronan Bass.
coast of Ireland, he was
Mr Bass completed a
awarded a 32-week TeachNZ
During that time he
carried out research in the
area of middle leadership
“Hot air balloons have
a certain magic that
intrigues young and old,
to see them “glowing” in
unison to music is a rare
and exciting opportunity,”
she said.
Mrs Driscoll said while
the balloons are the headline
act of the event, the
autumn festival surrounding
their performance
will offer a whole range of
entertainment, making it a
great afternoon out.
The event has a line-up
of artists including Holly
decades, Mr Bass has
the Malvern Community Hub
and for about five months we
channelled everything you
could think of into the city in
convoys. It was everything out
of our garden’s pantries and
goodness knows what. We did
that for about five months and
then when things began to settle
down a bit more, we realised
people wanted to continue
helping people and so it evolved
into the Malvern Community
Hub. From there, the Darfield
Baptist Church picked up the
need to have the Two Rivers
Community Trust so there was
a legal entity and other things
could grow and happen out of
that.
Are the Malvern Community
Hub and Two Rivers Trust two
separate organisations?
Two Rivers has got four main
streams to it and community
support is the stream we are
under. I manage that stream for
Two Rivers. The hub falls under
that along with other things.
Tell me about some of the key
projects you have been working
on lately?
Regular programmes we
support are the Craft and
Cuppa. That is specifically for
people who are lonely and need
to come out and talk to other
people. They can do crafts if
they want to, but they don’t
have to. It is a chance for lonely
people to integrate into a bigger
community. The folk from
Westmar Senior Care Centre,
some of them come along to it.
It is just nice to be out and about
in the community and meeting
other people. Language and
Laughter is another one. It came
out of our knowledge there were
many migrant women kind of
trapped on farms and some of
them desperate to have their
children get into some kind of
pre-school programme so they
start learning English. We have
had people from South America,
Egypt and India. They gather
together to do conversational
English and help with whatever
project they are on about.
The Malvern area gets a lot of
people coming from overseas?
Absolutely. For the women
in particular, they can be very
isolated on their farms. The
husbands can be off to work and
he is integrating with others and
learning English, but she is at
home maybe with a child or two.
We have a particular compassion
for those women.
In your role, what are some
interesting things you have
learnt that you think others
would be surprised to hear?
It is certainly around the
perception of poverty. Because
we think, ‘oh, this is where
retired farmers come,’ and
retired farmers clearly have
a lot of money. There is a
misconception about the level
of poverty. That is quite an
interesting one to tackle. We
offer budgeted advice and run
the foodbank so we are seeing
those people who have hit a
speed bump on their road and
they are really struggling. But
it is interesting to convince
other people there is that level
of poverty. The other critical
element is about housing and
the need for social housing. The
market sourced system simply
doesn’t work. The two are kind
of linked.
SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
Wednesday February 28 2018 13
alone in the countryside
You don’t always hear a lot
about Selwyn’s social situation?
One of the difficulties is that
the people who have some
control are the people who
decide what is the poverty level
or what is the need for social
housing or emergency housing.
All of the agencies who support
them are distant. They are in
the city or they are hidden in
bureaucratic places. So out here,
we are left to do what can we do.
What do you feel needs
to be done to improve these
situations?
There needs to be a clear
commitment from the agencies
that they will sit around a table
and talk to the people who really
know what is going on. And
explore and discuss until we find
the solutions that are available
to us.
It is really quite simple if
you talk to people in their own
communities, you find what they
need is a change in regulation so
you can put a granny flat on the
back of your property that is not
for a family member but is for
somebody else.
In Darfield of course, we
have a significant proportion of
the population that live alone.
Sometimes they are living like
me in a three-bedroom house on
a quarter acre section which is
far more than I actually need.
But I don’t have any other
alternatives. Where can I find
small suitable accommodation
that doesn’t take it right through
the roof? If we had a forum that
said how could we deal with
this and what is in our power
to do that, we could make a big
difference I believe.
Are there other agencies you
would like to talk to?
Absolutely. Some of the private
organisations that do social
housing. I know the Salvation
Army is struggling with the
definition of ‘need’ and the
limitations on that but they are
another voice.
The agency that controls
income subsidies; they need to
be sitting around the table as
well. WINZ and places like that,
and representatives of the health
system because everybody knows
the healthiest place for a person
is in their own home. How do
we keep them there? How do
we sustain people in their own
homes or make it possible to do
that? It would have to be a forum
that looks at all the aspects.
What is the most difficult
part of your job?
It is a silly thing but really the
most difficult part of my job is
encouraging people to believe
they are not a failure if they have
a speed bump in their life and if
they need a bit of help they can
get it. When they have got over
that, they can contribute back. It
is just the way a neighbour works
with another neighbour.
You must feel like you know
everyone in the community
after working with them so
much?
Just about, and we work hard
to make sure people know we
will stop and listen. We will take
them seriously. We will find
some way – some neighbourly
way – of dealing with what the
situation is. We recommend to
other people, we advocate to
other people, we walk alongside
people on the journey.
Is this your full-time role?
I am full-time bossy my family
tells me. I have had a long career
in teaching and I use aspects of it
in what I do now. But, yes, I am
retired and busy.
How did you come to arrive
in Darfield?
I am really a North Islander
who came down here to
Darfield. I think it was about
2003-2004. When I finished my
teaching career I wanted to be
a bit closer to my children and
grandchildren – not too close but
close enough that I can join in
their lives. Then I thought ‘here I
am, what am I going to do?’ And
it went from there.
And you have been involved
in helping the Darfield
community ever since?
I have a passion for Malvern
because it is the biggest but least
inhabited and therefore the least
serviced part of Selwyn. When
people think of Selwyn, they
tend to think of the big-bodied
population that is Rolleston and
the services there.
We have got so many villages.
They have just as much need and
it is just helping them to find a
voice or find some strategies
that are in their control. If we
can do this together we can
mange it.
You must like being out in the
country?
Yes, and the other element
is because it is rural there is a
spirit of generosity – it is just
wonderful. We never lack for
volunteers; we never lack for
contributions to the foodbank
or people to help out. People
want to be engaged; to be
neighbourly; to express that
neighbourliness.
Has Darfield changed a lot?
The demographics are
changing; it is growing. There is
GOOD WORK: Bev
Elder (right) with
Darfield Community
Garden work group
volunteers Bronwyn
Adams Hooper and
Rhyannon Gregg.
The volunteers were
preparing to plant
heritage apple trees.
no doubt about that in different
kinds of ways. There is a
significant rise in renters rather
than home owners. A lot of it
does depend on what Fonterra is
doing and whether they are in an
expansion phase or not. I think
the township is poised for more
growth.
It has certainly got enough
capacity to grow. It is hard to
know with the forces holding
it back from becoming what it
could be. I guess the focus is
on Rolleston and also probably
it has to do with the fact they
haven’t resolved the whole
issue with the water reticulated
system. We feel out here that is
being used as a reason to not go
ahead with things.
What do you like to do in
your spare time?
I have a very active little dog
so walking is one of them. I
love working in the Darfield
Community Garden that has
been established out there. I
read heaps and I try to learn
something new every year.
Fire rages, homes at risk
Teacher says farewell to a life of ballet
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
“THE MORE you put into
dance, the more that comes back
to you.”
Those are the words of highlyrespected
ballet teacher Ann
Judson, of Lincoln, who has
dedicated 44 years to helping
place dancers in professional
schools and ballet companies
around the world.
She taught at ballet schools
across the country and most recently
at Aspire Dance Academy
where she took classes at the
Springston Community Hall.
But after a difficult past 18
months, Ms Judson has farewelled
a life of ballet.
In November, she fell off
her bike and broke two parts
of her upper arm and
dislocated her shoulder. She also
broke her shoulder socket in two
places.
She spent seven weeks sitting
upright in her bed every night to
sleep.
“I was very fortunate because
the hospital hoped the dislocation
would go back into place so
I could avoid surgery. That actually
happened,” she said.
But she said she has got another
five months of physio and
the last 18 months have been a
lot to cope with.
In 2016, she lost her husband
Paul in an accident at Queen’s
Birthday weekend and dealt
with unexpected throat surgery
shortly afterwards.
“Often he would walk through
the door with the most beautiful
bouquet of roses with no other
reason than to say: ‘I love you’,”
she said.
Ms Judson said she was fortunate
because her husband was a
superb cook and she would come
home to a cooked meal when she
was tired at the end of the day.
When she was recognised with
a New Zealand Order Of Merit
(MNZM) for services to ballet in
2015, she said Paul had earned
that award as well.
Ms Judson said the parents
of her pupils supported her “in
every possible way” both before
and after her husband’s death.
“The parental support I have
had has been absolutely superb,”
she said.
A Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
celebration was held at St Mary’s
Anglican Church, Halswell,
recently to recognise her retirement.
Ms Judson trained at the New
Zealand School of Dance and
danced with the Royal New
Zealand Ballet.
She set up the National Ballet
School full-time tertiary course
in Christchurch in 1993 and was
awarded a fellowship with the
British Ballet Organisation.
She is also the South Island
representative for the British Ballet
Organisation Australasia.
But Ms Judson said the greatest
part of her teaching career
has been “to see a child’s belief
in him or herself come into fruition.”
One of her most successful
pupils was Marc Cassidy who
travelled from Clyde to Christch-
LOOKING BACK: Ann Judson
with a international Japanese
student training at the National
Ballet School in the early
1990s.
urch for weeks at a time to train
with her.
Cassidy was accepted into the
Australian Ballet School before
winning The Genée International
Ballet Competition in
London in 1993.
Cassidy described Ms
Judson as “one in a million,”
generous, honest and “genuinely
in love” with the art form of
ballet.
Following the February 22,
2011, earthquake, Ms Judson
managed to get her classes up
and running two weeks later at
the Tai Tapu Hall.
She would tell parents not to
worry about fees and use what
money they had on petrol to get
their children to her classes.
“There were many grateful
parents because the children
were wetting their beds and
they were terrified. It was just
awful.
“With the little ones coming
through the door I said: ‘Let’s
stomp on the monster’s head,’
which was very helpful when
there were aftershocks and they
were really frightened,” Ms
Judson said.
She said there were many
hardships – with many of her
school’s families having no
homes or jobs.
“We even got into a system
where one parent who had a big
vegetable garden would bring
in tomatoes and lettuces to help
other families. There was a real
comradeship,” she said.
Later when she heard the Tai
Tapu Hall was going to be pulled
down she moved her classes to
Springston.
Ms Judson would also buy costumes
and shoes for her pupils
facing hardships.
Her school would run fundraisers
and she contributed
what money she could to get her
pupils into courses both in New
Zealand and overseas.
Now she will spend her time
working at Wilkins Bridal in
Christchurch and looking after
her granddaughter Harper.
“It is lovely to have those interests.
I love young people so I am
very fortunate to be able to do
this,” Mrs Judson said.

16 WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 28 2018
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
SELWYN TIMES
West Melton kea
crossing is all go!
The kea crossing installation has been completed for West Melton Primary School on Weedons
Ross Road.
Senior students from the school trained as Road Patrollers with School Community Officer
Constable Rick Groen on Monday morning. The patrollers learnt how to safely operate the newly
installed and much awaited kea crossing to ensure their fellow students and caregivers get across
the busy road safely.
Kea crossings are operated by the trained patrollers along with an adult supervisor. The patrollers
are taught how to find a safe gap in the traffic flow to swing the stop arms out into, to hold the
pedestrians until traffic has stopped and to release pedestrians to cross once the path is clear.
Sue Jackson, Principal of West Melton Primary School says the kea crossing is an opportunity for
students to be involved in the community with leadership responsibilities.
“We are delighted to endorse our Safe School Travel Plan by supporting our students in their
leadership roles as road patrol monitors, ensuring the safety of the school community as they
cross the now busy Weedons Ross Road.”
The kea crossing and footpath extension north on Weedons Ross Road complete the recent
shopping centre landscaping and school frontage development. Road Safety Coordinator
Stephanie Hautler urges parents to use the kea crossing and try active transport.
“We want our young people to be getting to school actively where they can and the kea crossing
and footpath is another tool to open up routes to the community across a busy road. Caregivers
need to be mindful that they are role models for all kids, not just their own and use the kea
crossing to and from school when the flags are up.’’
Drivers are asked to keep an eye on their speed around pedestrians, when entering and exiting
the shopping centre and near the school.
“This is your village and for your children to be safe getting to school you must slow down,” Mrs
Hautler says.
When the kea crossing is not under the control of the road patrol team the cross point operates
like any other piece of road where pedestrians have to wait until the road is clear before crossing
and to wave drivers through who stop to let them cross.
Have your say on Water Bylaws
The Council is inviting submissions to three bylaws covering key water services across the district.
The current Water Supply Bylaw 2008 and the Water Race Bylaw 2008 have both been reviewed
reviewed, while a new Stormwater and Drainage Bylaw 2018 has been drafted for consultation.
The Water Supply Bylaw relates to water supplies under Council control and management across the
district. It has worked well over the past 10 years but now needs to be updated to reflect changes
in operations and in the district’s water needs. The updated bylaw will clarify the obligations of the
Council and customers, provide flexibility in approving connections and generally make the bylaw
easier to understand.
The Water Race Bylaw, which relates to the Council’s water race network, has also been in place since
2008, and the amended version is not significantly different. The changes mainly relate to technical
aspects such as terminology and definitions, and ensuring it meets current statutory requirements.
The new Stormwater and Drainage Bylaw 2018 provides a framework for managing the stormwater
and drainage network across Selwyn. It covers development and maintenance of the network, and
measures to minimize risks to the network from damage, interference or contamination.
The three bylaws are open for public consultation until Wednesday 21 March. Information on the
proposals, including a copy of the draft bylaw and details on making a submission, are available at
www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay
Open Fire Season
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has advised the Selwyn
district is now in an Open Fire Season.
No fire permit is needed to light a fire in open air in an Open Fire
Season. However, you are still responsible for the fire and must
ensure that the fire does not get out of control and spread to
vegetation or property.
Fires in the open air in urban areas must
comply with the Environment Canterbury
Air Regional outdoor burning measures. To
learn more about Fire Seasons visit the FENZ
website www.checkitsalright.nz.
Ex-cyclone Gita skims past
Selwyn district
Selwyn was fortunate to be spared the worst effects of ex-tropical
cyclone Gita last week.
On Tuesday (February 21) evening the Council declared a Civil
Defence State of Emergency in response to predicted extremely
heavy rainfall and high winds. While the district received sustained
rainfall which caused river levels to rise and some surface flooding,
the forecast weather didn’t eventuate. By Wednesday (February 22)
afternoon the declaration was lifted.
Selwyn Civil Defence local controller Helene Faass says the
decision to declare on Tuesday evening was to allow the Council
Civil Defence team to get on with the job and take action if it
needed to.
“The rainfall didn’t reach predicted levels, however taking a
precautionary approach and declaring meant we had access to
powers and resources to evacuate low-lying settlements such as
the upper and lower Selwyn Huts if necessary. We were also able to
place other agencies on standby to assist,” she says.
Coes Ford, Chamberlains Ford and Whitecliffs campgrounds
were closed to campers for two nights due to the high level of the
Selwyn River.
The Council would like to thank the community for its support and
cooperation during the extreme weather event. Thanks also to our
community response teams, staff, contractors and volunteers for
their work.
You can join Selwyn Gets Ready to receive vital emergency
information relevant to the area where you live. Messages are sent
via email and more urgent messages requiring immediate action will
be sent to your mobile selwyn.getsready.net.
Water meters installed in
Southbridge and Rakaia Huts
Southbridge and Rakaia Huts are the latest townships in line for the
rollout of water meters across the district’s water supplies.
Installation of water meters at households connected to these
supplies will begin early next month, and is scheduled to be
completed by late April.
Around 90% of Council supply households across the district are
already on meters, and this project will complete installations at
around 315 properties in Southbridge and 106 in Rakaia Huts.
Metering has been shown to reduce water consumption as it links
water use to charging – so households that use less water benefit
from lower charges, while those using more pay higher charges.
Households with average water use will find their total charge
remains similar to what they currently pay. You can help avoid
incurring extra charges by monitoring your water use – see
www.selwyn.govt.nz/watermetering for more information and tips
on how to read your water meter.
Backyard Critters
SELWYN TIMES
Slimy slug-like predators of the worm world
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in
entomology (insects and other invertebrates).
Each week he introduces a new species
found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column
aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity,
the variety of living things around us
TERRESTRIAL flatworms are
flat, slug-like, free-living soil
fauna with unsegmented bodies.
The dimensions of flatworms,
also known as turbellaria, are
not constant as they can change
from short (1cm) and fat, to long
(12cm) and skinny (0.5cm) at
will.
New Zealand is thought to
have about 100 species, with
numerous colours and patterns.
However, individuals are usually
striped, dotty or a single colour.
Flatworms are very similar to
slugs; being delicate, soft-bodied,
susceptible to desiccation and
the use of mucous.
They are easily damaged and
collected specimens usually die
and decompose very quickly to
a liquid.
Being sensitive to sun, these
critters are always found in cool,
moist, snug places against soil.
They’re often hiding under plant
pots, plastic, flat wood, pavers,
and the like.
Their ability to squeeze into
small holes and crevices helps
them locate and consume earthworms,
slugs and snails.
These predators use their
mucus to catch and digest
their prey, which is swallowed
through their mouth located
half-way along its underside.
Pale coloured egg capsules can
be observed in the flatworm’s
body prior to laying, at which
time they darken to a shiny black
ball about 5mm in diameter.
The most well-known New
Zealand flatworm species is
arthurdendyus triangulatus.
This voracious earthworm
SLIMY: Terrestrial flatworms
are similar to slugs. (Above) –
Flatworms lay pale coloured
egg capsules.
predator has become a major
threat overseas to European
earthworm species. Each flatworm
can eat at least one earthworm
per week.
Flatworms are thought to
hitch-hike in pot plants transported
around the world.
Lincoln students race to start year
LINCOLN University has
started off the academic year
with its own version of reality
television show, The Amazing
Race.
The university welcomed its
new students recently by getting
them to race around the campus
using an app called the Wild
Goose Chase.
The race was organised by the
Lincoln University Students’
Association and featured an egg
challenge, students drawing with
their non-dominant hand and a
gumboot throwing competition.
The association also gave out
goody bags and pots of noodles
on the day.
Other activities included
giant inflatable balls and
music.
A media spokesman said
the race was a different way
for students to get to know the
Lincoln campus.
The university’s academic
year started last week, while its
orientation week started earlier
this month.
WELCOME TO UNI: New students ran around inside giant
inflatable balls. (Right) – Lincoln University Students’
Wednesday February 28 2018 21
• By Gordon Findlater
WEEDONS AND Sefton
have seized the early
initiative in the top-four
section of the Canterbury
Country premier one-day
competition.
Weedons defeated
Leeston-Southbridge
by three wickets in a
tight match played
in bowler-friendly
conditions at Weedons
Domain.
Batting first, Leeston-
Southbridge made a slow
but steady start before
Weedons’ Jonathan Green
dismissed both William
Macfarlane for 17 and
Chris Beatson for a duck
in quick succession to
have the visitors at 28/2.
Opening batsman Liam
O’Sullivan was the only
batsman to make a healthy
contribution, grinding
out 39 from 101 deliveries
before being bowled by
Green.
Leeston-Southbridge
were bowled out for 119
in the 38th over. Weedons
were able to clean up the
middle order and tail
with relative ease. Brad
Nightingale and Green
were the best of the
SPORTS
Weedons take tight match
bowlers, both claiming
three wickets.
Weedons’ run chase got
off to a shaky start. They
found themselves two
wickets down for just 10
runs early. Gareth Painter
and Sam Wilson were able
to steady the ship by combining
for a third wicket
partnership of 32.
However, it was the
lower order that fired to
get Weedons over the
line. Number 6 Shannon
Dunnett and No 9 Kane
Meyerhoff both scoring 23
runs each to see their side
reach the total in the 24th
over.
O’Sullivan continued
an impressive day of work
with three wickets to
finish as the best Leeston-
Southbridge bowler.
Waikirikiri
may join
Canty hockey
league
A VOTE will be taken on
whether to affiliate Waikirikiri
to the Canterbury Hockey
Association on Wednesday
night.
If the vote at the association’s
annual meeting is in favour of
the affiliation, Waikirikiri will
be able to enter teams into the
Canterbury senior competition
in a staged basis over a number
of years.
A vote in favour would mean
the year 7/8 Kwik Sticks 11-aside
boys and girls, senior division
three (year 9 up to under-18)
boys and girls and the mid-week
open men’s and women’s teams
will be able to be entered this
year.
Waikirikiri club president
Lyndal Marshall says it is an
exciting development which will
allow them to bring new players
into the game and give them a
stage on which to represent their
local club.
Waikirikiri Hockey was
formed in 2017. Until the club’s
formation, players had to travel
to the city to join a club.
In its first year, the club attracted
120 junior hockey players
in 13 teams, of which 70 per
cent were new to the game.
Tight schedule for Lincoln Uni athlete
• By Andrew King
AFTER competing in the
Canterbury track and field
championships at the weekend,
Lincoln University student Tegan
Duffy will have little time to
recover.
The 17-year-old is about to head
off to the New Zealand track and
field and then the Australian
junior championships – with
all three events in the space of a
month.
She has also just started
studying land and property
management at Lincoln, works
part-time at the Commodore
Hotel, and trains six times a week
at the Old Boys’ United Athletic
Club.
She won the under-20 long
jump at the Canterbury track and
field championships in Timaru
with a distance of 5.64m in her
fifth jump. However, Duffy didn’t
compete in her other specialised
event, the 100m hurdles.
She is set to compete in both
events at the New Zealand track
and field championships from
March 9-11 in Hamilton before
flying to Sydney on March 12 for
the Australian junior athletics
championships from March 14-
18.
“So basically I have to get back,
repack and head off again,” she
said.
Tegan said she started
athletics as a hobby but now has
aspirations for bigger things.
“I am looking ahead to the
junior worlds and what I need to
do to qualify for that,” she said.
She has to pay her own way to
attend the championships, and
said it would cost about $2000 to
attend the Hamilton and Sydney
events.
“I have gone to the local
community board to ask for
funding and my nana Faye Kerr
has helped me fundraise with
my mum, Toni, and we have held
some quiz nights. Also, nana has
a few friends that have chipped
in,” she said.
For the past month, Tegan has
been training harder than
usual and has been pushing
herself to see what her body can
endure.
“There has been a lot of harder
running and pushing myself as
hard as possible. The weights are
heavier, all of that,” she said.
ATHLETE: Tegan Duffy, seen
here competing at last year’s
New Zealand track and field
championships, will be back
at the same event next month
looking for success in the long
jump and 100m hurdles.
MY PRIDE AND JOY
SELWYN TIMES
Reliving special
memories
Many people have memories of their
early cars.
Paul’s story began 50 years ago when he
met Ev. They were just 13 years old and
students at Buller High School in Westport.
On leaving high school, Ev shifted to
Christchurch and Paul became a mechanic’s
apprentice at Westport’s Ford dealership.
He purchased his first car, a 100E Ford
Prefect in 1972, a typical boy racer car of
the day with a 105E engine, GT camshaft,
Weber carburettor, lowered fat feet, and it
was noisy.
A year later, Paul moved up to his first
Cortina, a 1963 1500cc model, beginning
his love of Cortinas.
“It was a great car, having started its life
with the Sisters of Mercy at the Westport
Catholic convent,” says Paul.
In early 1974, just before he married
Ev who had moved back to Westport to
begin nursing training at Buller Hospital,
Paul purchased a 1965 Aeroflow 1500cc
Cortina. For their honeymoon, they took
the Cortina on a road trip through the
Haast Pass, returning via Christchurch.
At the time, the Haast Pass was under
construction with numerous road works,
temporary one lane bridges and a shingle
road between lakes Paringa and Hawea.
“I enjoyed drifting around the corners
without shaking the car to pieces from the
corrugations in the road,” explains Paul.
Eventually the 1965 Cortina was sold and
over the ensuing years, Paul bought and
sold a number of cars including two more
Cortinas.
By 2017, with fond memories of his
1965 Aeroflow 1500cc Cortina, and Ev and
Paul’s three daughters having grown up and
moved out, the desire to own another Mark
1 Cortina led to Paul purchasing a 1965
‘daily runner’.
Paul made a few minor mechanical
repairs, touched-up the paintwork, had the
front seat re-upholstered, and fitted a new
radiator and interior carpet. Then, armed
with spare parts and a well-equipped
toolbox, Ev and Paul set off on a road trip to
mark 50 years since they first met, retracing
the route of their honeymoon.
During the first leg from Christchurch to
Westport, a few minor repairs were needed
however Paul says the car performed
extremely well. They played 1970s music
and stopped to take photos at the same
places as on their first trip.
“It was awesome, a really great trip down
memory road,” says Paul.
Paul noticed a few differences: more
vehicles overtook them this time round,
more motorhomes and tourists on the
road, Lake Pukaki looked quite different
with the dam completed, and there was no
need to de-dust the clothes as the road is
now tarsealed.
“In 1974, the cost of fuel for a trip from
Westport to Hokitika in the same model
Cortina cost $3.48. In 2017 it cost us
$43.62,” advises Paul who says it was a trip
of a lifetime.
“To do the trip again in the same year
1965 Cortina was extra special,” adds Ev.
MOTORCARE PROFESSIONALS
Auto Electrical Expertise close by
The frequently hot weather experienced
this summer could mean your vehicle’s air
conditioning needs servicing to ensure
your heater functions properly over winter.
Your vehicle’s auto electrical needs
are easily sorted with Newlands Auto
Electrical close by in Rolleston.
The team at Newlands are specialists
in auto electrical work, as well as air
conditioning and radio communications
for commercial and personal vehicles.
They also carry a wide range of LED
lights. These include 4WD light bars;
directional or standard rear lighting
for a vehicle or trailer (for brakes and
indicators); courtesy LED lighting suitable
for a camper, caravan, bus or other larger
vehicle; and LED lighting for agricultural
machinery.
They only stock quality fittings, sold
at competitive prices. This is due to their
direct buying capacity, with brands such as
Hella and Narva available in store, along
with Newlands’ own brand of LED lighting
products fitted with Philips parts, ensuring
they are long-lasting reliable lights.
In addition to lighting, Newlands
Auto Electrical carries a broad range of
automotive products at their retail store in
Rolleston. Whether you require a battery,
electrical products, communications
equipment, power tools, hand tools or
windscreen wiper blades, they can help.
If they do not have what you need, they
will do their best to have it there within the
day or overnight, and will deliver if you are
not too far from Rolleston.
Newlands has the latest technological
top-of-the-line digital battery tester
meaning they can quickly and safely test
your battery. With no need to disconnect
the battery, it will take just a few minutes so
pop in before the weather cools for a quick
check so your battery is capable of doing
the job when winter comes. You might also
like to book your vehicle in for a pre-winter
check.
Worn out wiper blades mean poor
visibility and driving in inclement
conditions extremely dangerous yet
replacing these is a task that is often
overlooked. If your wiper blades are
streaking or over a year old, they
will be past their best and not up
to the job. A visit to Newlands
will sort the problem and if you
take your vehicle to them for a
WOF inspection, they will also
check your wiper blades and fit
new ones should you require.
The reliable experienced team at
Newlands Auto Electrical include electrical
technicians, a radio communications
engineer, and parts salespeople. They can
take care of all aspects of your auto electrical
needs in a fast and efficient manner. After
all, this is a company with over 80 years’
experience in the business.
With Newlands Auto Electrical close
by at 825 Jones Road on the Izone side
of Rolleston, there is no need to drive
into town for your auto electrical needs.
Just give them a call on 03 347 3476 or
0800 152771, or pop into their premises
between 8am and 5pm, Monday-Friday
where they will be more than happy to
assist you.
Late summer greenhouse tips
Keep productivity levels
pumping by prioritising
some key tasks. Diana
Noonan reports
1. Water warning
Don’t water and work among
your plants at the same time.
Late summer sees greenhouse
plants struggling to support
ripening fruit and masses of
foliage. When you water, foliage
becomes heavier, and plants
lean in all directions, including
over pathways. Foliage also
becomes more fragile as it takes
in moisture. If you’re working
around your plants immediately
after watering, you’re likely to
knock off fruit and break stems,
and the last thing you want this
late in the season is damaged
plant material that then becomes
a site for disease to take hold.
Water early in the morning and
keep out of the greenhouse until
the warmth of the day has dried
the plants off.
2. Stress busters
Plants have been in the ground
for several months now, and are
becoming exhausted from the
task of producing and ripening
fruit. This kind of stress is the
open door through which pests
and disease leap when given half
a chance, so pamper your plants
like never before. Water deeply
to avoid soil drying out. Nourish
plants with low nitrogen liquid
feed (nitrogen at this stage in the
season will only promote leaf
growth at the expense of ripening
fruit). Be more vigilant with
ventilation to avoid heat stress.
4. Pick and pinch
Plants have enough to
contend with in late summer
without having to support fruit
that’s already mature. Harvest
as soon as possible and take
extra care to ensure you don’t
damage stems as you pick. If
you’re in a region where flowers
or young green fruit just don’t
have a chance of developing or
reaching maturity, or even of
growing to a size where it can be
picked to ripen inside, nip out
the no-hopers. Sacrificing them
will make way for other fruit to
mature more quickly.
5. Prune
If your vines are tapping on the
roof of the greenhouse, it’s time to
nip out the centres. Excess height
will only shade plants below.
Besides which, at this stage,
further flowers are unlikely to
have time to produce fruit that
will mature. Prune off dying
lower foliage Urban to avoid Section
it attracting
disease.
Urban Section
BUMPER CROP:
Don’t work around
greenhouse plants
heavy with water –
you risk damaging
them. Harvest as
soon as possible
and save your
plants the work of
further supporting
fruit that is already
mature.
6. Open those vents!
Fungal diseases are
synonymous with late summer.
Encourage airflow by opening
vents in the morning and leaving
them partially open at night.
When days are warm, leave the
door open but remember to leave
a netting covering over the gap –
birds are as keen on ripening fruit
as you are.
7. Out with the old, in with
the new
If a plant is failing at this late
stage, don’t dilly-dally – whip
it out of the ground. The space
left behind will allow for better
airflow or, if you have another
plant to go in its place, top up
the soil with fresh compost and
animal manure (taking care not
to disturb the roots of
neighbouring plants) and pop it
in.
8. Waste not, want not
Blossom-end rot and tomato
split are all late summer problems
but they don’t spell the end of a
fruit. Keep an eye on your harvest
and pick any fruit with signs of
early disease or imperfections.
Washed and trimmed, they can
be popped in the freezer until you
have enough for processing into
chutney or soup.
9. Keep supporting
Your plants are tired. You may
be too, but it’s more important
than ever to keep vining growth
well supported. Get out there with
the ties before the plants bend
over and snap or are weighed
down and broken with the weight
of fruit.
10. Select your seed
Prepare for seed saving
by observing the success, or
otherwise, of your plants and
selecting fruit from the best. If
you want to save seed that will
produce fruit the same as that
from which it has come, select
from non-hybrid plants.
growing with you
Lawns Love
Autumn
We are about to embark on one of the best times of year to tend to your
lawns. The temperatures are dropping so get new lawns down, and tend
to your existing one as well. Preparation is key for lawn establishment,
so make sure you put the good stuff down if you want the good stuff to
grow. Our Lawn Construction Mix is ideal for preparing, and then sowing
in. When choosing your seed, make sure it is fit for purpose so you get the
best results from it. The seed is designed for different climates and areas
(shady, full sun all day, wet areas) so talk to your local seed specialist to get
advice on what seed is going to suit your needs.
For existing lawns, a lush green look is something we strive for. This
doesn’t come without some work. Continuous maintenance is required,
fertilising, watering, mowing, and removing weeds to name a few.
Intelligro Lawn Fertiliser, and slow release fertilisers are packed with
essential nutrients for growth and development, greening, and disease
protection. Make sure you fertilise early morning, or late evening and
water thoroughly afterward. For patches that need repairing, you can use
our 20L Premium Lawn Soil. This mix is great for those small jobs, and you
can sow your seed straight into it. Please bear in mind that any products
that contain soil are not “weed free”, and weed seeds spread in a variety
of ways, so there is a chance of weed growth.
For more information, check out our website: www.igro.co.nz
or visit our facebook page: www.facebook.com/igro.co.nz
NEW ENTRANCE: 261 Manion Road, Weedons
Access to Intelligro from Manion Road is now available from both the
Weedons Ross Road end, and Curraghs Road entrances.
Paws for Reading
Thursday, 3.30pm, 3.45pm,
4pm and 4.15pm
Read to a furry friend. Is your
child shy or reluctant about reading?
Do they need to gain confidence
in reading aloud? Reading
to a gentle and patient furry
friend can help. Selwyn libraries
are partnering with members of
the Selwyn Dog Training Club to
offer “Paws for Reading”. Book
your child in to spend 15min
reading to a friendly, carefully
selected dog.Can this help your
child’s reading? Similar programmes
have been shown to
improve reading fluency between
10 to 30 per cent over time, however,
no results are guaranteed.
Take a book that your child has
read before or choose one from
the library before the session.
Most sessions will be on the
mobile library bus. Dogs will be
monitored by its owner/handler.
A library staff member will also
be on hand at all times during
the session, however, the sessions
encourage children to read
to the dog with minimal adult
intervention. Do not book your
child into a session if they are
nervous or anxious around dogs.
Also, do not book your child into
a session if they have a known
allergy to dogs.
Your guide to Show Homes & New Sections
in the Selwyn District
A home you will
love to live in
The new Faringdon showhome village is a great place to see building and home
décor ideas and while there, check out Jennian Homes’ new showhome.
This cleverly designed and very well
appointed four bedroom 224sqm family
home will have you imagining living there.
“We chose one of our favourite plans,”
says Sue Prendergast, Client Liaison,
Jennian Homes’ Canterbury North.
From the street, the mix of Cedar and
Rockcote plaster finish cladding is striking
while the well-appointed siting of the
house on its 663sqm section takes full
advantage of indoor/outdoor living while
maximising the sun through all aspects of
the day.
There is a large open plan kitchen,
dining and living area as well as a separate
lounge/media room.
“The kitchen is the heart of any home so
we wanted to make it a real feature in our
showhome,” adds Sue.
Lighting, tiles, careful design, a scullery,
and great utilisation of indoor/outdoor
flow all contribute to achieving this.
Those who enjoy relaxing in a lounger
with a good book or glass of wine will love
the extensive deck. This can be accessed
from the dining area, kitchen or master
bedroom. A sheltered recess off the
kitchen offers a great place for breakfast
or a morning coffee while the portico out
from the living space is a perfect spot for
alfresco dining. The result is a peaceful
enchanting setting overlooking the
professionally landscaped garden complete
with water feature.
The master bedroom has both walk-in
robe and a plush ensuite, complete with
generous walk-in shower. The large main
bathroom has a freestanding bath with
tiled feature wall as a backdrop giving
the room a really luxuriant look and feel.
There is a separate toilet and laundry,
while located beside the true double
garage is a storage room which would be
equally ideal as a small workshop.
This home boasts many quality
characteristics like the feature wallpapered
walls, floor to ceiling tiling in both
bathrooms, hardwood decking and
television recesses that make you feel like
you do not want to leave.
“It’s a beautiful home. Our brief was a
designer home for a young modern family
and it’s certainly met this while allowing
us to showcase many different techniques
that can be applied when building a home
these days,” explains Sue.
Jennian Homes’ new Rolleston
showhome has been designed for family
living. You will find it at 7 Lemonwood
Drive in Faringdon; open for viewing
12noon to 4pm, Wednesdays to Sundays.
