Coastal pathway $10m short
• By Sarla Donovan
A KEY piece of the Christchurch
Coastal Pathway is in limbo due
to a $10 million shortfall.
Heathcote Ward city
councillor Sara Templeton
last week pushed through an
amendment to the city council’s
draft Long Term Plan to try
and prioritise
what she said
was a “key piece
of community
infrastructure.”
The 760m
Sara
Templeton
section from
Shag Rock to the
Sumner Surf Life
Saving Club is
jointly funded by the city council
and the Coastal Pathway Group.
It is expected to take 12 months
to build, with an anticipated
start date of April.
However, the final part,
between Moncks Bay and Shag
Rock, currently has no funding
allocated.
Ms Templeton’s amendment
means a report with an estimate
of the costs for the section and
a timeframe for delivery will be
included in the draft Long Term
Plan and the community will be
able to make submissions on it.
PATHWAY: A key section of the planned Christchurch Coastal Pathway is in limbo due to a $10
million shortfall.
There was a lack of
understanding about the
coastal pathway, with some city
councillors viewing it as purely a
“recreational nice-to-have,” she
said.
“This report, and community
submissions, will enable the
project to have the best chance at
success.”
Ms Templeton said the
original footpath on the other
side of the road was removed
during rockfall remediation
work and was not replaced.
She said the Moncks
Bay pathway is currently a
“dangerous informal path” with
a drop down to the rocks or sea
below.
“Footpaths are a core council
function, but this section is
currently not funded at all,” she
said.
HOON HAY COURT LIGHTS
The Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board will
recommend to the city council
that lights are installed at the
Hoon Hay Park basketball
court on Mathers Rd. The
lights would be connected to an
automatic timer set to switch
off at 9pm every evening. If
approved by the city council,
the lights may be put in by
April or May.
MANUKA COTTAGE
The city council has received
two tender applications for the
design and construction of
the new Manuka Cottage on
Cornelius O’Connor Reserve,
Addington. The deadline for
the tenders was February 7. The
evaluation process to determine
the successful tenderer is being
worked through by the city
council.
BOARD PLAN PROGRESS
A Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board workshop
will be held tomorrow to look
at progress made on the board’s
plan. The plan was adopted last
year and outlines local issues,
ambitions and concerns that it
plans to address, pursue and try
to resolve.
