The fact you’re not allowed to take dead leaves off the trees themselves – having to wait till they are spread all over the park before you can pick them up – is very frustrating. I believe van Asch school and education centre would be much better situated in a central location in Christchurch. Like Ferndale School (for children with special educational needs – intellectual, sensory and physical) and Elmwood Visual Resource Centre (for students with visual impairment), both located in Merivale, education centres for students with special educational needs should be located centrally to provide easier accessibility to the wider community. Many students with disabilities are now welcomed into mainstream schools, and with sufficient support, their educational needs are being met, particularly at primary school level. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER for schools that offer specialised teaching in smaller classes for students whose needs cannot be met in regular classrooms with 25-35 other students. Such specialised schools and resource centres have an enormous amount to offer parents, teachers and support staff, including specialised knowledge, technology and experience at the coal-face. While regular schools have access to Ministry of Education specialists, it would be great to see more collegial support between specialised schools and mainstream schools. Teachers and teacher aides can learn a great deal from sharing their experiences. Jan Driscoll – My neighbour has a massive cabbage tree that sheds copious dead leaves every time there is a wind from east and south, right into my place. My red bin is full every two weeks with the darn things. It’s a beautiful tree, but I wish it was somewhere else. James Tarrant – What killed them? I’m having trouble trying to get rid of mine. Seeds keep spreading and I keep removing them but sometimes I miss them. Dessiel Shepard – Okay, who did this? Just be honest so I can post you chocolates, beer and petrol vouchers. Ashley Campbell – These trees evolved to be in this environment. If you look at the parts of this city that the natural environment is reclaiming, you will find cabbage trees are the most prolific of the regenerating species. This is their space, we moved into it. Native birds love them , the nectar of their flowers feeds bellbirds, tui, and kereru, so if you have cabbage trees around you are more likely to attract those birds. As well, their berries feed those same birds and some introduced species. They are among the most fire-resistant of our native trees. Offshore, for example, in the United Kingdom they are considered highly desirable exotic trees to be tended to and loved (in the UK they are known as torquay palms, because they do best in the south-west of Great Britain). It would be nice if we could treat them with the same love and respect here, where they evolved, and are a crucial part of our natural ecosystem. Sara Templeton – Not for everyone, I know, but I learned how to make twine from the leaves at a rekindle workshop. Shelley Ingle – Their leaves, when dry, are great for starting fires . . . less kindling required!
