20 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 28 February, 2018 $15,000 Federal funding boost for Hillies Rugby TS ill ugy Clu is set to enefit from funding through the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Program. North Sydney MP Trent Zimmerman said the Australian Government would provide $15,000 to assist with the purchase and installation of new drainage at Boronia Park Oval in Hunters Hill. The total project cost is $50,000. “Hunters Hill Rugby Club is one of the oldest in the Sydney Suburban Rugby competition and indeed in Australia and I am delighted to be able to provide funding for new drainage that will ensure better access to Boronia Park Oval during and after wet weather”. “Known as the Hillies the Club is 126 years old and has well over 600 players across its divisions and was NSW Rugby Club of the Year and division champions in 2017. The Club does an excellent job in bringing people together, encouraging fitness and developing a passion for rugby”, Mr Zimmerman said. Hunters Hill Rugby Board president Luke McCormack said the club was delighted to have been successful in their application. “We appreciate Trent’s support of the Club both as our local MP and also as Club Patron”, said McCormack. The Club recently hosted a huge rugby promotion at Boronia Park Oval in support of junior registration for season 2018. Hunters Hill junior products and current NSW Waratahs stars Andrew Kellaway (Randwick) and Hugh Roach (Eastwood) brought along NSW team mates and Wallabies Nic Phipps and Ned Hannigan to help out and meet club fans and conduct a skills and coaching clinic. It was a successful rugby community event with over 150 young players in attendance, many first time registrations. Both Phipps and Perry expressed what a great afternoon of “grass roots” rugby was organised. Adam Latham, Hunters Hill Juniors Chairman Adam Latham and Luke McCormack were impressed by the contribution of all the senior Waratahs, Wallabies and Aussie Pearls players that made the event such a huge success. “You tend to hear a lot of the bad news stories when it comes to rugby in Australia these days but the players efforts is a great (rugby) news story and I can’t thank them enough for the time they gave to their young fans” revealed McCormack.

Special guests included Clr Roy Maggio “The People’s mayor”, Steve Sim “The Number 1 voice in Ryde”, longtime Ryde Rugby sponsor David Price of Frigcorp, former Ryde Mayor and Eastwood Chamber of Commerce president Vic Tagg, Club Eastwood president Ray Blunt and Club Eastwood general manager Steve Colquhoun. Life Membership for three Club stalwarts Three longtime Club members were inducted onto Ryde Rugby’s Hall of Fame with Life membership. They are Marty and Aivi Rodgers and David Price. Marty Rodgers was foundation president plus coach with Aivi managing club needs over many years and were instrumental in Ryde Rugby’s early success. David Price of rigcorp made sure the edgling clu had everything arty needed to get the youngsters on the field each season. Frigcorp has been a fantastic supporter of junior rugby for over 15 years as is still actively involved today making Ryde Rugby the best rugby club in the area. For anyone wanting to play rugby it is not too late to register t his year. Training commences next Wednesday March 7 at Ryde Park 5.30pm with a “TRY RUGBY” night and free BBQ. Club president Warren Price says: “Ryde Rugby is a junior club in the Eastwood village and a great pathway for kids to play in the mighty Woodies Blue and White colours for representative selection. “Our great club is focused on fun, participation and enjoyment for kids and families to enjoy our wonderful Ryde community”.
