DECONTAMINATE HUNTERS HILL CAMPAIGN
at Packed Town Hall Meeting
Continued from page 6
ROSEMARY MANUSU (Resident, 15 Nelson Parade):
“My life has been turned upside down. A complete
shock, absolutely devastating. For forty years our lives
have been dominated by anxiety and by uncaring governments.
In 1978 the government promised a clean
up. In 2018 all trust has gone, completely.”
MARK BENNETT (Mayor of Hunters Hill):
“We are a strong community that cares. The inaction
we face is political. The inaction we face is unacceptable
and the inaction we face will not be accepted. The
anxiety, the depression and the fear is undermining
the mental health of people in our community.”
ROBERT BROWN MP (Spokesperson Fishers,
Farmers and Shooters Party):
“When your Mayor stands up and talks about mental
health it is not just talk. Can you ever trust governments
to do what they say when neither side of politics
has acted properly on this? If there is blame to be
had, it is with the senior officers of government!”
ROSS WILLIAMS (Deputy Mayor of Hunters Hill):,
“I would suggest the government gets on with it and
gives us some relief. There is no reason why the government
can’t act. The government has a moral responsibility
to act. The problem is indisputable, nor is
there any dispute about what should be done about
it.“
MARK TAYLOR (Macquarie University environmental
waste expert):
“This is a wicked problem. You, the community,
have had a long wait and the patience with this wait
has come to an end. Now the waste problem will be
shared by two communities, your community and the
community that is going to receive the waste.”
JOHN ATKIN (Community legal adviser):
“This has been treated as a political issue. This has
been treated as a political football!”
The rally heard the government would be unlikely to
remove the Nelson Parade waste within 18 months,
prompting this outburst from a protestor:
“Eighteen months?”
“What this means is the waste will be here longer
than that waste of space, Anthony Roberts, will be!”
Keynote speakers on stage at Hunters Hill Town Hall on Tuesday night faced the concerned local citizens who unanimously expressed their
displeasure at the lack of action by their elected representatives and the non attendance of them at the meeting. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO.
Government valuation shows home price slump
The Nelson Parade Action Group has hit back at a comments from Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts who urged angry residents
not to talk down local property values.
Nelson Parade Action stigma of proximity to the
Group spokesperson contaminated land and
Philippa Clark said.
“The government’s own
valuer accepted the value
of our house has been
depressed by at least 35
per cent because of the
that was well before we
started this campaign.”
Local legal eagle John
Atkin said The Weekly
Times played a key role in
the grass roots campaign
and will hold Lane Cove
MP Anthony Roberts and
Ryde MP Victor Dominello
to account until the waste
is removed.
“It is encouraging that
we have the government’s
attention. At the end of
the day, the Government
owns the land and has a
responsibility to neighbouring
landowners and
users of the river to carry
out the remediation. That
is what we are working
for.”
The next round in this
escalating campaign will
come at a stakeholder reporting
meeting called by
Property NSW to be held
in Fairland Hall 14 Church
St, Hunters Hill at 6pm on
Tuesday March 14.
