Purrfect diet to maintain
fat cat Harry’s nine lives

THERE IS nothing
Burwood Hospital’s
cunning cat Harry does
better than charm patients
into giving him tasty
treats.
His morning carer Cherie
Porter describes him as
a “star performer” who can
easily look “a bit pitiful”
and convince anyone to
feed him.
But it wasn’t long before
the furball’s ploy for free
treats began to backfire
– causing him to quickly
become overweight.
Ms Porter said there was
probably about eight to 10
people feeding him and
patients would bring him
bags of treats.
It was decided in October,
Harry would be
placed on a metabolic diet
– meaning he could only
be fed biscuits twice a day
and no more treats from
patients.
Four months later and
Harry is beginning to get
results.
The cat, based in the
hospital’s occupational
therapy department, is
now a much slimmer 6.4kg
– compared to his starting
point of 8.1kg.
“The vet who came to see
him didn’t think we would
be quite so successful . . .
we are hoping to get him
down to about 5.5kg by
Christmas,” Ms Porter
said.
In a bid to help him on
his weight loss journey,
the hospital’s occupational
therapy department are
selling calenders to cover
Harry’s vet and food costs.
The calendar features
photos taken by patients
and staff of Harry in action.
“Or lack of action,” Ms
Porter said.
She said the first print

to help him burn more
calories and prevent overheating.
Inspite of progress, Harry
still likes to get up to his
old tricks and was caught
sticking his tongue into a
yoghurt pottle on Tuesday
morning, Ms Porter said.
He has lived at the hospital
for five years.
He originally belonged
to a family living near
Tumara Park, but he eventually
stopped going home
and the family gifted him
to the hospital.
Ms Porter said Harry is a
“real character”, lovely, tolerant,
patient and clever at
knowing who needs him.
“He manages to calm
people down quite well
and makes them more
confident.”

Action on freedom campers close

ACTION ON freedom
camping in Akaroa is
likely before next summer.
City council staff are
investigating a time frame
for amending the Freedom
Camping Bylaw 2015 after
the Banks Peninsula Community
Board indicated it
wants changes in place by
December 1.
At a board meeting
in Akaroa on Monday,
four people spoke about
freedom camping issues
during the public forum.
They were Victoria
Andrews, Liz Mars, Geoff
Maxwell and Darin Rainbird.
The board agreed it
wanted
to see changes to freedom
camping rules in Akaroa
and asked city council
staff to report back in two
weeks on a time line for
implementing an amendment.
Deputy Mayor Andrew
Turner said if the bylaw
couldn’t be amended before
December, they would
look at implementing a
temporary ban.
“There are activities
happening in Akaroa at
the moment that cannot
continue for another summer
season.”
The city council temporarily
closed five popular
freedom camping sites including
French Farm and
Wainui after overcrowding
during the 2015/2016 summer
season.
A permanent ban was
later put in place.
