We’re in IT together
The 2018 exhibition season kicks off in
earnest this month and the main topics of
discussion will likely be the same across the
board, with one topic making a big showing
By the time you read this it’s more than possible that you’ve
already started filling up your diary with dates for
exhibitions, roadshows or networking events. Take a quick
look through this edition and you’ll see that we’re starting to
ramp up the coverage on the UK industry events, looking at IFSEC
International and the NSI Installer Summit while last month we
highlighted some of the seminars at SCTX. There are more
options than ever when it comes to getting out and meeting
people at events and whether you choose to attend any of the
above or some of the excellent roadshows organised by various
quarters in the industry you will notice a recurring theme in the
aisles and training/seminar theatres this year. What’s surprising
is that this is a subject that no-one was really talking about at
any length before 2016 and that subject is the cyber security of
networked systems.
Since the inception of the Internet there have been individuals
who have made it their career choice to try to hack into
networked systems for nefarious deeds of one kind or another so
the fact that today, when we have so many IP solutions on the
market, it is not really any great stab in the dark to expect that an
IP camera can be seen as a way into a company or private IT
system. Yet for so long the industry seemed to spend most of its
efforts in focusing on reducing the bandwidth requirements of
security systems rather than securing the structure. I remember
talking to a company a few years ago who were pushing the idea
of having an entirely separate network to keep cameras off the
company system, not for security reasons, but so surveillance
coverage wasn’t hindered by overnight backups and strains on
the service at busy times of the day.
Today there is much talk of the cyber security of the
technology because there are so many items being connected to
the Web such as IoT/smart devices that there is more of a risk -
as we have been told many times, the more you have connected
to the Net the more access points there are for hackers. It’s not
just the security systems that pose a risk it’s everything on the
network as well, which is why at the events this year there will be
much talk of whose responsibility it is to protect networks from
cyber threats. The installer, the manufacturer and the customer
all have roles to play in this conundrum and there are a host of
products that are utilising some innovative technology to secure
the systems already available.
If you do attend any events in 2018 be sure to talk cyber with
those you meet - don’t say it’s not your responsibility, because
every installation is only one hack away from a problem.
CCTV ACCESS FIRE INTRUDER
(L-R): Professor Debra Humphris
(Vice Chancellor, University of
Brighton), Sam Innes, Laurence
Budd, Yury Johnson, Adam
Stroud (Paxton CEO)
Paxton reveals scholarship
programme recipients
Paxton has announced the first recipients of its
new scholarship programme in conjunction with
the University of Brighton.
The initiative, launched in November last
year, offered the opportunity for students
studying engineering and product design
related courses at the University to win one of
three scholarship places each worth £10,000
plus a three-month paid work placement with
the company from July 2018.
As part of the scholarship, the selected
scholars will participate in technology research
projects at Paxton that will then form the final
year project of their degree course.
In November 2017, the company hosted a
student open day at its new facility, the Paxton
Technology Centre, which was attended by over
100 students from the University of Brighton.
The open day provided them with the
opportunity to learn more about the company
and the application process, meet Paxton’s
experts in Product Development and Research,
and receive hands on technology
demonstrations of the company’s product range.
From those that applied, 16 were then invited
to an assessment day, where they undertook a
series of practical tasks and interviews.
Following this, the successful three students
were then selected, who are Yury Johnson,
Laurence Budd and Sam Innes.
Commenting on the programme, Adam
Stroud, Paxton’s Chief Executive, said: “I’d like
to congratulate the three students that have
secured the 2018 Paxton Scholarship. The
Paxton Scholarship is a long-term initiative
designed to ensure that we can secure the
bright-minds needed for the company’s
continued success and prosperity. I am thrilled
at how the initiative was embraced by both the
team at Paxton as well as the students and staff
at the University of Brighton.
In brief
Security installers working
in Central London are being
warned to check if their vans
are liable for the new T-
Charge – and to prepare
now for the upcoming Ultra
Low-Emission Zone (ULEZ)
coming into effect on 8 April
2019. The warning comes
from commercial vehicle
rental company Enterprise
Flex-E-Rent. It advises that
these charges could cost
businesses hundreds, even
thousands, of pounds if they
own older vehicles and drive
them into the capital.
Boston Networks joins investor
Aliter Capital’s portfolio
Boston Networks announced recently that is
has secured investment from investor Aliter
Capital.
Boston Networks is headquartered in
Glasgow and provides services to private and
public sector customers that are
predominantly based in Scotland and the
North of England. The business was founded
in 2000 and employs c.90 staff.
Aliter will use its industrial expertise and
networks to drive both the organic and
acquisitive growth of Boston Networks so that
it can gain scale and a national footprint. The
goal is to develop a group of fire, security and
data networking companies with national
coverage and a diversified blue-chip customer
base; and the Company will be actively
looking to make bolt on acquisitions of
complementary businesses.
CEO Scott McEwan will continue to lead the
management team and will also retain a
shareholding. Aliter Partner Greig Brown has
been appointed Chairman of the Company and
will be joined on the Board by Aliter Managing
Partner Billy Allan.
Scott McEwan, CEO of Boston Networks,
commented: “Choosing Aliter as our
investment partner was an easy decision. I
have been aware of the Aliter team and their
track record for a number of years, so having
the opportunity to work closely with them on
the next stage of Boston Networks’
development is exciting. It was clear from the
start that their network and experience will
add significant value to the business,
supporting transformational growth and the
development of additional solutions for our
customers. The fact that Aliter truly
understands our market and how our business
operates will be of major importance going
forward.”
Greig Brown, Partner of Aliter Capital,
commented; “Boston Networks is a fantastic
example of the type of business and
management team that Aliter is looking to
back and where we can use our sector
expertise to support transformational growth.
The UK’s fastest growing

security distributor
Motorola Solutions announces agreement
to acquire Avigilon
Motorola has announced that it has entered into an agreement
to acquire Avigilon.
“This acquisition will bring Avigilon’s advanced video
surveillance and analytics platform to the rapidly evolving
public safety workflow, while also expanding our portfolio with
new products and technologies for commercial customers,”
said Greg Brown, chairman and CEO, Motorola Solutions.
“Video can play a powerful role in creating safer cities and
thriving businesses. It can serve as highly efficient ‘eyes and
ears’ for monitoring a given location, and advanced video
analytics can proactively alert officials to a perimeter breach or
quickly find a person who left behind an object of interest.”
“We’re very pleased to be joining Motorola Solutions, as
their vision and strategy aligns fully with our own,” said
Alexander Fernandes, Avigilon’s founder, chief executive
officer and chairman of the board. “This combination will bring
new opportunities to Avigilon, allowing us to accelerate our
innovation and provide even more value to our customers.”
Jon Cropley, principal analyst, video surveillance at IHS
Markit says: “Rumours about Avigilon being acquired have
been circulating in the industry for years. Many expected one
of Avigilon’s competitors to acquire it. Instead, Motorola
Solutions, a company with limited current involvement in the
video surveillance market, has stepped in.
“Motorola’s focus on public safety projects is likely to have
been a major motivation for the acquisition. City surveillance
is an important element of public safety. Professional video
surveillance equipment revenue has been growing faster in
the city surveillance sector than in the rest of the market in
recent years. IHS Markit forecasts this will continue, with the
city surveillance sector growing at a compound annual growth
rate (CAGR) of 11.1 percent to 2021 — and the total market
growing at a CAGR of 6.8 percent.
The announcement to acquire Avigilon comes after a string
of acquisitions by Motorola over the past three years.
“Given these deals and planned acquisition of Avigilon, it’s
clear that Motorola is aiming to increase activity in the wider
public safety and ‘safe city’ market, moving beyond its
emergency communications focus of the past,” says Jon.
“Traction of national public safety broadband networks such
as ESN and FirstNet, which facilitate video integration, further
support this strategic play.”
IHS Markit estimated Motorola held approximately 7
percent of the nearly $5 billion command and control
technologies and services market in 2017.
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to David Scott,
Curriculum & Quality
Leader for Built
Environment and Securities at New
College Lanarkshire. The college has
over 140 apprentices currently completing the Modern
Apprenticeship in Electronic Fire and Security Systems.
You have over 140 apprentices on the 3-year course. To what do
you owe this success?
We are always pushing boundaries. We never teach strictly to a syllabus,
but vary it to suit what the industry needs. We teach the students about
the latest systems, standards and equipment. All of this isn’t cheap, but
we have fantastic support from partners – including CSL – who regularly
donate their time and equipment to help train the students. We also
have 9 dedicated staff involved in training and delivery of the courses.
They all come from the industry. In fact, 5 of them completed the same
Apprenticeship course. All the training is provided by competent
engineers, some of whom own companies and are still on the tools
themselves, which really helps us to remain current.
How important are your relationships with local companies?
The support of our employers is vital to our success. We have students
from Aberdeen to Dumfries that travel weekly to attend the course. That
can work out at an 8-hour round trip, so employers clearly see the value!
Over 70 companies send us a consistent flow of students and have been
supporters of the programme since I joined the college in 2011
including: SPIE, FES, CHUBB, ADT, CSS, Alarmfast and Video
Watchmen. We also have some students who join without an employer.
We then approach our partner companies to ensure all our students find
full-time employment.
What would your advice for other colleges be?
Don’t teach the apprentices what you think they need to know, teach
them what the industry needs them to know. Engage with local
companies and you will see the demand is there! It can be time
consuming but it really is worth it. Also engage with local schools. There
are young people out there looking for a career in our industry, they just
need to know it is available. Build momentum and over time word will
spread and the numbers will rise. There are some initial costs but
suppliers and partners in the industry are willing and ready to help.
Additionally, get involved in the industry. Events such as the NSI Summit
& IFSEC are your opportunities to advertise your college to your local
companies.
You have continued to support Engineers of Tomorrow (EoT) held
annually at IFSEC in London. Why is the competition so important
to you?
Attending IFSEC in London is a fantastic opportunity for us to update our
knowledge on the new technologies and standards and of course engage
with the industry. It is another opportunity for us to meet with our
partners, thanking them for their continued support and perhaps even
identify some new ones. The EoT Competition is vital in our engineers’
development. It really separates those that are good and those that are
brilliant! It’s what it’s all about, challenging their strengths and
weaknesses and putting them under real-life constraints that they would
face daily in work, it really is amazing.
YOU SAID IT!
“Virtual Security Ltd enjoyed some training on the UDL and the GradeShift Range from CSL today.
Thanks Wesley Chidgey and Daisy Collins for your assistance and product knowledge, we’re all set
for remote connection and maintenance moving forward.”
Dome assembly
Clear bowl
Conduit adaptors
Mounting template
Quick Installation Guide
Model detail stickers
Wall fixings and screws
Security Allen key
Desiccant pack
The clear dome has
very good clarity and
an IK10 impact
rating
This is a compact, easy to install, ONVIF
compliant dome with a remote zoom and
focus 3mm to 10mm auto-iris lens. It
provides up to two 1920 x1080p streams with a
third using MJPEG. Both H.264 and H.265 are
supported. A wide selection of video analytic
features along with local alarm input & output
connection and audio line in and out. Infrared
illumination is quoted to 30 metres.
Getting started
There was no operating manual included with the
dome and none was initially found on the Bosch
website under the camera’s detail page. An
operational manual for the browser functionality
was eventually found on the general 4000 series
page. It would save time if this was included on
the dome’s specific page rather than just a link to
the data sheet.
As the bowl is detached from the dome in the
packaging it is a simple job to identify the PoE
network connector, the power, alarm and audio
connections alongside are also clearly marked
and accessible.
Operation
The dome is set to DHCP by default so if
connected to a suitable configured network will
be in the local subnet. The dome identified itself
on the network as being from the Bosch
subsidiary VCS (Video Communication Systems
AG) rather than Bosch.
At first browser connection you are prompted
to create a ‘service’ password but it is not
immediately clear that the username for this is
“service”. Once entered an immediate live camera
image was shown with tabs to access Playback
and Configuration menus. A pop-up warning is
given to remind you to set the correct time for the
location.
Browser operation performed well with
Internet Explorer, Edge, Chrome and Firefox, but
some PC configurations will likely require an
ActiveX plug-in. Clips from the internal storage
can be exported as .mp4 files.
As an alternative to the browser setup, Bosch
Configuration Manager software can be
downloaded from their website.
An analogue test monitor output is included
but requires an ‘optional’ SMB to BNC connection
lead that is not provided.
A Menu button on the dome’s chassis front,
cycles through some limited functions such as
Auto-Focus, Image invert and Default with 9
apparent functions some of which require a push
of less than 2 seconds and others greater. Apart
from a simple diagram in the Quick Install Guide
there is no mention of this feature in the available
manuals beyond the ability to disable the button.
It does appear that you need to attend a training
session to have explained the features that
haven’t been well documented.
Power can be supplied from both PoE and 12 or
24v input to provide a level of additional
protection in case of network or PoE disruption.
The local power input will take over and keep any
local recording maintained until a PoE supply is
restored.
Configuration menu options
These are clearly laid out and accessible from the
left-hand side of the pane and with their submenus,
in the following order:
General – Identification, User Management,
Date/Time, Display Stamping and GB/T 28181.
These options allow the usual camera naming,
user password and permissions, time zone and
synchronisation and display OSD data and
formats. The GB/T 28181 refers to a public
security standard which is a requirement for the
Chinese market only.
Web Interface – Appearance and Live
functions. These allow language selection, Logos
to be allocated (although these need to be
provided on a continuously accessible web-
TEST
A very capable
camera with good
sensitivity and 1080p
HD detail. Can be
configured to record
directly to iSCSI drive
as well as its optional
internal Micro SD
card
NOTE: This PSI Product Test
was carried out by an
independent third party,
not editorial staff. The
manufacturer had no input in
the review or the final result
8.0 out of 10
(continued from p14)
server), audio enabling, showing of alarms and
local recording.
Camera – Installer menu, Positioning, Scene
Mode, Encoder profiles, Privacy Masks, Audio and
Pixel Counter. The usual frame rate and coding
settings with a lens wizard to set the zoom
position and autofocus features. A rather
elaborate method of setting the camera mounting
height and field of view is included to enter global
position values. Scene modes, encoder and
stream settings then audio levels complete the
camera options. The Pixel counter allows an area
of the screen to be selected to identify the
number of horizontal and vertical pixels that make
up the defined area for both HD and SD streams.
This could prove very useful for calculating the
target pixel height for scene subjects during
commissioning.
Recording – Storage Management, Recording
Profiles, Maximum Retention Time Recording
Scheduler and Recording Status. These menu
items allow direct recording to internal Micro SD
card and / or network connected iSCSI storage
devices. Recording profiles can be created for Day,
Night, Weekend and 7 additional colour coded
time periods. The retention time sets the time in
days before image files are overwritten. The
scheduler allocates the profiles to the 24 x 7
timelines and allows the additional profiles to be
named.
Alarm – Alarm Connections, VCA, Audio Alarm,
Alarm E-Mail and Alarm Task Editor. These options
allow destination IP address and transmission
settings to be entered. To get best results from
the VCA settings it is important to carefully
calibrate the cameras mounting position and
location from the Installer menu. This ensures
that scene subject height is calculated with
appropriate perspective, in relation to the
distance from the camera.
Interfaces – Alarm Inputs and Outputs. This
allows selection of Normally Closed or Normally
Open status and naming of input along with
action to be taken (None, monochrome or Switch
mode). For output, the idle state can be set to
Open or Closed, the mode can be set to Bistable
or from 0.5 seconds to 5 minutes in 10
increments. Output follow, naming and Toggling
the output complete this section.
Network – Network Services, Access, DynDNS,
Advanced, Management, Multicast, Image
Posting, Accounts and IPv4 filter. Selection and
allocation of the various protocols and settings,
Dynamic DNS and Bosch Cloud service settings.
While the above menu options are very
comprehensive there are some anomalies and
apparent oddities in the layout and order of some
of the options. The positioning and calibration
settings will take some time to work through so it
is likely that these will often be skipped resulting
in poorer detection performance than the camera
is capable of.
Performance
The camera has good image quality and low light
sensitivity. The sensitivity is stated as 0.12 Lux
colour and 0.02 Lux monochrome with a 0 Lux
figure when using the built-in IR LEDs. Dynamic
range is given as 85dB. The clear dome has very
good clarity and an IK10 impact rating.
A range of “Essential Video Analytics” are
included providing:
Rule based alarms and tracking, Line crossing,
Enter /leave field, Follow route, Loitering, Idle /
removed object, People counting, Crowd density
estimation and 3D tracking.
To fully appreciate these analytic functions and
to optimise their settings it is wise to download
the VCA Operation Manual from the Bosch
website; the manual highlights many of the
difficulties encountered with external movement
detection and suggests ways to minimise the
impact.
The line audio input has an analytic feature
that uses a volume threshold level to generate an
alarm, thirteen frequency bands can be selected
or omitted to limit the impact of machine or
background noises.
The infrared LEDs provided sufficient
illumination to achieve the stated 30 metres
distance and intensity can be lowered to suit the
scene if necessary.
The on-screen time & date display can be set
to show milliseconds, this is useful feature when
confirming recording rates.
System latency when used with the Bosch
Video Client was an average of 390ms. Browser
live view latency varied widely from 424ms with
IE11 on Windows 8 to a surprising 3.4 seconds
using Edge on a Windows 10 PC.
While there is a Playback facility on the
browser display this is very limited in operation
and playback speed appeared to operate
differently with alternative browsers. Best results
will be gained when used with a compatible
network recorder and video client or management
system.
Conclusion
A very capable camera with good sensitivity and
1080p HD detail. Can be configured to record
directly to iSCSI drive as well as its optional
internal Micro SD card. It’s surprising that they
have not provided fuller documentation with the
product as the web access to relevant information
is not a straightforward as it could be.
INTERVIEW
IFSEC International Brand
Director Gerry Dunphy of UBM
An event with purpose
With only a few months to go before IFSEC International 2018 at London
Excel, we caught up with Brand Director Gerry Dunphy of UBM to find out
what’s in store for those heading to the city this year
SI readers will know about the direction
Pthat IFSEC is travelling in, not just as an
event but as a 'happening' following the
announcement back in the December 2017
edition. The new focus follows a long process of
research with partner companies with the point
of getting into the DNA of what IFSEC really
stands for. It is with this in mind that we spoke
to Gerry Dunphy about the results of the
research and how the event will evolve to match
the demands and future direction of the security
industry.
What were you hoping to achieve as a
result of the research?
We know IFSEC is more than just a trade show
or a supermarket of vendors, it is a
representation of the whole security industry
and we have been trying to wrestle with that to
see what purpose the event serves. We see
IFSEC as an event where the entire spectrum of
the security world comes together for a common
goal. With the research we discovered some
high end concepts, but the
essence is that the
market we are
in is really
important and it reflects how important security
is in our daily lives; arguably the biggest
challenge that the world is facing. Our job is to
bring that seriousness to the fore and take it to
everybody from the installer to the Home
Secretary because their challenges are the same
and we all have a role to play to make sure goals
are reached. This is the direction that IFSEC will
be travelling in with the realisation that it has a
real purpose, which goes beyond driving people
into the hall and hoping they will walk around!
What form did the research take?
For the research we went to 543 visitors and
customers with the question of "What keeps
you awake at night?" and they came back to us
with some fascinating responses. We combined
all of the comments and themes so we could
build a strong set of personas to reflect the
different parts of IFSEC in terms of the type of
people that attend. Looking at their challenges,
concerns and gains are has allowed us to
determine what it is that they require back from
us.
For example, our installer persona runs a
small team of installers, business is good
carrying out a range of business and commercial
jobs, but where he has challenges is in keeping
up with technology - specifically IT/cyber as this
is a whole new discipline coming into his world.
There is a certain amount of thinking that
technology is moving so fast that installers are
always trying to catch up, so our role is to
bridge that gap and to bring in experts who can
help installers understand what is coming
through.
How will you help to bridge the gap?
From our point of view we have to make sure
that our audience is keeping up with the
constant march of technology; we don't want
people being bewildered by the systems being
talked about at the event. The common theme
we kept hearing in the research was that
installers wanted to be shown how to do things
with new technology, so we recognised that our
role here is to be the educator.
16
www.psimagazine.co.uk

This "show me how" requirement is really
important to the extent that we will be bringing
out a whole new project for 2018 called IFSEC
Show Me How consisting of seminars,
networking sessions, keynote presentations and
technology experts in the exhibition hall.
We have spoken at length with Tavcom
Training about how we can use their training
expertise as a Show Me How offering to the
extent that an introductory IT and cyber session
is exactly what the market is telling us it needs
so that is what needs to be covered. The idea is
that installers will come to the show and find
out how technology works to give them a richer
experience.
How can exhibitors help with Show Me
How?
We need to make sure that there is a value to
installers giving up their time to come to IFSEC
and this applies heavily on the exhibitors
because if they have a good balance of sales
and technical people on their stand and are
willing to be a Show Me How exhibitor
(complete with special badges) then visitors will
get more from the experience. For instance,
exhibitors need to be prepared to show their
products' capabilities not just sell them.
Installers have told us that they have trust
issues over new technology and companies they
do not know, so if they understand how the
systems work it will hopefully satisfy this
concern.
We must remember that we are not an IT
show, principally we are a hardware event but IT
is increasingly more important and so we have
to present this convergence of the two in a way
that is beneficial to the installer audience. In a
way we can help them future proof their
businesses.
What changes will people immediately
notice this year?
For 2018 we are re-purposing the Tavcom
Theatre and we will be bringing it more to the
forefront of the show in terms of content and
themes. We're going to make sure that the
content, where it concerns IP and IT at an
introductory level, is going to be in the main
messaging to ensure that installers know they
will have the opportunity to learn from
dedicated experts. As a result of all of this we
will be rebranding the theatre to "The Future of
Security - powered by Tavcom" to help us
engage with installers. What we are trying to say
to the installer audience is that you are the
frontier of what happens in this industry and
what we need to make sure is that the hardware
(continued over)
“From our point of
view we have to
make sure that our
audience is
keeping up with
the constant march
of technology; we
don't want people
being bewildered
INTERVIEW
“With 24/7
connectivity these
days I’m sure that the
IT/cyber subject will
be a main topic of
discussion – and
probably for the next
few years too”
(continued from previous page)
and the technology manufacturers aren't leaving
you behind.
We are repeating the Smart Homes education
feature because the research feedback from
installers told us that new areas for business are
always of interest with home automation
specifically mentioned; we know of installation
companies that are looking to employ home
automation experts to focus on this area. There
is a real ambition for installers to diversify into
this technology so will be staying with Smart
Homes, hosting a series of seminars as part of
the "Show Me How" theme.
Another new feature for this year will be in
the middle of the centre aisle. The Show Me
How - Speakers Corner will encourage new
exhibitors to stand up on a soapbox for about
fifteen minutes to talk about what they offer
from a capability point of view - not selling the
technology but saying what it will do and how it
can benefit installers with certain applications.
The whole Show Me How idea is based around
learning, system capabilities and what
technology is available, without visitors being
sold to.
How do you gauge the show in terms of
feedback?
We have an installer council made up of people
from all over the UK that meets regularly to have
discussions about all aspects of the market and
business. This gives us a great chance to listen
to their thoughts on a range of topics and also
an opportunity to run our ideas by them for an
honest opinion on value. We are keen for any
installers to join in this group so we have as
many voices as possible.
Is IT/cyber going to be the big story this
year?
Cyber protection has become one of the main
discussion points in our council sessions as
installers find themselves in a position of being
unsure of their responsibilities towards the
ongoing security of technology. Taking this onboard
we are working with Tavcom to make sure
that the role of the installer with cyber is
addressed at the show. After all if you are fitting
the system, you can't just walk away after the
installation, so what is your role in enabling the
customer to have a secured set up from the start
and also going forward? Educating the market
on cyber resilience is a topic we have talked to a
number of companies, such as Axis, at some
length to align all parties in the installation to
prevent the security system itself from being a
network vulnerability down the line. With 24/7
connectivity these days I’m sure that the
IT/cyber subject will be a main topic of
discussion – and probably for the next few years
too.
What other attractions will there be in
2018?
There are plenty of features covering the
requirements of the spectrum of visitors, for
example there will be an integration arena, a
separate set piece showing bigger systems and
the business intelligence that you can gain from
using the technology. The systems that are at
IFSEC are not just used to stop crime; how you
use the gathered information to deliver business
intel is another recognised benefit so we will be
addressing this and other topics including
market strategies throughout the event. The
Drone Zone returns as does the Attack Testing
Zone and, of course the Engineers of Tomorrow
competition. Our keynote arena will be looking
at the future of the industry, law enforcement
and convergence, all giving us the broadest
spread possible and making sure time spent at
the show is of value to all.
IFSEC International
Raising the focus on cyber
security and video
Mobotix has announced a raised
focus on cyber security by
implementing the “Mobotix
Cactus Concept.” The concept
aims to provide protection for Mobotix
products against the threat of cyber-attacks
along with education and tools to help
customers and partners build and maintain
secure video surveillance and access control
environments.
The objective of the Cactus Concept is to
implement a multimedia cyber security
campaign in order to raise awareness among
potential and existing Mobotix customers of
the importance of data security in networkbased
video security systems and how
organisations can protect themselves. End-toend
encryption with no blind spots is required,
from the image source via the data cables and
the data storage through to the video
management system on the user’s computer.
Simplifying the access
control infrastructure
GDX by Stanley Product & Technology has
announced the UK launch of GDX7 a Power Line
Ethernet (PLE) system that utilises a standard 2-
Core cable for transmitting all communications
and power to each component of the system.
GDX7’s ‘plug & play’ design can be used for all
system types – audio only, audio and video, or a
mixture of both. Not only does this feature make it
adaptable, it simplifies the cable infrastructure
required by utilising a 0.75mm cable for
transmitting all required power and
communications via a proprietary SIP based
protocol.
GDX7 entrance panels, handsets and
apartment station designs are aimed at providing
improved access solutions in line with the current
Disability Discrimination Act and Disability and
Equality Act (2010) to meet the requirements of
any tenant.
The GDX7 IP65 rated entrance panel includes
an optional fully integrated camera with LEDs that
streams live footage of any visitors back to a
video handset or apartment station when they
attempt to enter the property. The panel also
provides backlit LCD single line display for clear
visitor feedback, while a separate vandal-proof
reader is also available in order to secure doors
that do not require visitor access control.
Updates add security and enterprise grade reliability
Checking security credentials on mobile devices, scalable vector graphics,
application layer high availability for customers who require enterprise grade
reliability and licence plate recognition are among a series of new updates
available for Inner Range’s integrated security solution Integriti.
The newest developments are possible with an Integriti V18 software update
and are available for new and existing customers immediately.
Security staff will be able to check the validity of people’s credentials with a
new Sky Reader app, which allows staff to use their mobile phone to read security
passes anywhere on site. When valid cards are read, corresponding photo ID
appears for easy checking and security staff can suspend credentials if need be.
Scalable vector graphics are also available to help security staff pin point
access points, alarms and systems needing attention. Integriti can automatically
zoom into a specific area required without manual scrolling or zooming.
Customers can also now run multiple instances of Integriti
services at the same time. Controllers and clients automatically
connect to available nodes to ensure an “always on experience”
minimising costly and/or vulnerable downtime.
held in Barcelona at the beginning of February bringing over 500 delegates
together to discuss video management trends and innovations. PSI was
among the integration community at the event
Ben Hammersley spoke about the
impact of intelligent solutions and
the need for embracing innovation
With a theme of "Creating an Intelligent
World" the event addressed a number of
issues, however the clear message from
the seminar presentations was that anything can
be made possible with technology if people are
willing to embrace innovation. The main topic for
example was Artificial Intelligence, sure to be one
of the major trends at trade shows for the next
few years too, with a number of presentations
addressing the next generation of analytics for
the video market.
According to Christian Ringler, Director of
Middle East, Africa and DACH at Milestone, who
gave the first keynote presentation, we are fast on
our way to an "Intelligent World" stating that
"technology is advancing quicker than at any time
in history and this technology is allowing us to
turn video into something that brings value
beyond security." Christian was also one of a
handful of presenters who made the statement at
the event that Milestone's aim is to be part of
every video installation via its open VMS platform
in the world going forward.
The event began in earnest with the "futurist"
Ben Hammersley discussing the potential for AI in
the years ahead and the reason why all
integrators and businesses need to get on board
with the technology or face an uncertain time as it
becomes more commonplace. Ben used the
example of Kodak not taking the emergence of
the digital camera seriously despite being one of
the pioneers of the technology. By dismissing the
potential of the new technology it ultimately led
to the demise of the company regardless of its
market dominance.
Bjorn Skou Elertsen, CTO, took to the stage to
say that one day it is inevitable that all devices
will be connected and intelligence will be
enabled. "Video is transforming with the
embedding of intelligence and all systems will
use AI making human life better through
intelligent augmentation."
PSI caught up with Bjorn after his seminar to
find out more about the difference between
analytics and AI especially as AI and Deep
Learning are likely to be the main marketing
trends from manufacturers and suppliers for the
next few years, but the lines between the two
disciplines seems a little blurred at times.
"With analytics you have a predefined
outcome," says Bjorn. "This could look like a
trained AI system but there are two classes of
artificial intelligence; those that are trained and
those that are learning systems. Both are
intelligent, however it changes the way we think
about analytics as for some time this has been a
very narrow field of expertise. I do believe that
there has been a democratisation of the field of
"Technology is advancing quicker than at any time in
history and this technology is allowing us to turn video into
something that brings value beyond security"
MIPS 2018
(from previous page)
applying intelligence to data and it will be
possible for the next generation to develop
autonomous systems.
"You could argue that we have been on the
fence when it came to analytics and we have been
asked many times to provide analytics, but we
believe that no one company has the answer and
can come up with THE analytics solution," he
said. "As a society and the way in which we use
video are changing so we need to be able to
change the way we think about the intelligence
we need for different scenarios. It is important
therefore for us to be able to build a platform for
any and all partners to do the relevant analytics
for the application. I think there will be an
explosion in the number of analytics developers
coming into the market and I expect that some
integrators will have to take on their own
specialists to develop their own analytics
solutions." In fact on the second day of the MIPS
event integrators were shown how to build an
artificial intelligence algorithm themselves.
Bjorn explained that he felt that the final part
of the AI process, human augmentation, was still
two years out before it becomes mainstream due
to the technology, such as glasses with HUD
displays, not being fully user friendly yet. "We are
there with the aggregation and automation of AI,
but we are still some years away with
augmentation and we need some research
specifically on the use of glasses, lenses and
watches etc."
So in simple terms it would appear that the
main difference between analytics and AI is that
analytics carries out a predefined task and
“Rather than focusing on the number of cameras,
installers need to be thinking about making longer-term
relationships with customers by offering more and
having broader conversations”
perhaps alerts if this event occurs while AI is
trained to carry out a function but continues to
learn while it is being used making it more useful
in the long term. "AI is essentially an organism
that allows for exponential use and growth and
shows how you can go beyond security. If you
look at the conventional way to use analytics it
has been confined to the security space - we have
aggregated video because we needed evidence.
Analytics works with the principle of answering
one simple question and that is that. Installers
need to stop thinking about every installation
being about security and think how can they
video-enable the world and optimise production,
drive quality assurance and improve healthcare
professions?"
This idea of going beyond security was
emphasised by Kenneth Hune Petersen who said
"through AI we can make a real difference and
drive business potential. AI can boost labour
productivity by 40%". Perhaps most tellingly,
Kenneth also revealed that only 0.5% of all data in
the world has been analysed or used which
demonstrates how much information is not being
utilised by current technology. So how is the
industry addressing this?
"Installers and resellers are now realising that
they can't do more with their current business
model, but the industry has changed," said Raziel
Bareket, Director North & South Europe at
Milestone. "When you use and reuse an existing
model you will figure out that you cannot make
24
"AI is essentially an organism that
allows for exponential use and
growth and shows how you can
go beyond security”
any more money. Installers have begun realising
that if you have a platform that allows them to
offer better solutions and services for their
customers you have a better business model.
Rather than focusing on the number of cameras,
installers need to be thinking about making
longer-term relationships with customers by
offering more and having broader conversations.
"Security is a commoditised market, hardware
prices are going down so where is the value in the
supply chain?" he asked. "It is all about thinking
outside the box. We also believe that the new,
younger people coming into the industry will
expect connectivity and systems to be open. This
means that there will be a complete shift in the
industry mind set in the next five or six years and
for the resellers this will be quite interesting."
As we have discussed in PSI before, the market
is now software driven and end users are not
necessarily needing to change hardware in order
to upgrade their systems plus the scale of
unanalysed data shows that there is much more
that can be done in this area with a longer-term
business model. If artificial intelligence utilising
video data has anything like the impact that the
MIPS event is suggesting it will be a huge step for
the surveillance sector. The delegates at the event
were certainly impressed by the potential being
discussed and, as keynote speaker Louis
Richardson of IBM and a number of presenters
said, the rise of AI is "inevitable".
With the rapid pace at which technology is
developed it will be interesting to see what is
revealed at the conference next year and whether
the adoption of video intelligence has indeed
begun to reach its potential for making anything
possible.
DOMESTIC
Bringing security home
According to a report last year
around 70 per cent of British homes
don’t have a burglar alarm fitted.
why do homeowners appear to be
so calm about security and what can
installers do about it?
Despite the fact that ONS figures show that
there were 261,915 domestic burglaries
between Oct 2016-Sept 2017, home
security is apparently 43rd on the list of things we
think about when moving house, said a poll of
2,000 adults by Yale during this same period last
year. When reported by The Sun newspaper at the
time, the number one priority when moving house
is revealed as easy parking, followed by concerns
over the council tax banding. But the issue of
home security comes lower on the list, below
considerations like whether neighbours would be
able to see them sunbathing in the garden.
Yale MD Nigel Fisher told the newspaper: “We
weren’t expecting home security to be the first
thing on people’s minds when moving house, but
it has come much lower in the top 50 list than
we’d have predicted.
On the one hand it is reassuring that “what the
local crime rates are like” has appeared in the top
10, as this would suggest some level of concern
about safety.”
Over a third of those questioned admitted that
the last time they moved house they were more
preoccupied about where things would go than
home security. A further 64 per cent admit they
don’t have much outside lighting, 57 per cent
don’t have any trusted neighbours and 73 per
cent don’t think to put lights and radios on timers
when they go away.
Nigel Fisher added: “Home Office figures have
highlighted that you are almost twice as likely to
be burgled in the first twelve months of being in a
new home, so security should be at the forefront
of people’s minds when moving.”
The website Police.uk says that homes with no
security measures in place are five times more
likely to be burgled than those with simple
security measures such as window locks and
deadlocks. In most burglaries reveals the site, the
criminals broke into the house or flat through the
door, either by forcing the lock or kicking it in.
Unfortunately, as you will likely know, when it
comes to security it is down to cost that is often
the factor in whether or not people have security
systems installed. Today’s IoT centric generation
will happily spend over £1000 on a smart
television and splash the cash on computers,
games consoles and smartphones, but seem to be
happy with using a system that is no more than a
glorified webcam connected to their mobile to
protect it all. And more often than not these
networked cameras are inside the property when
it is, frankly, too late to make any difference in the
crime; there is no deterrence and no prevention.
This is why it is essential that for good
domestic security it is vital that the problem is
looked at from the outside in, not the other way
around. We know from the research carried out
with reformed criminals that a visible alarm
system is a deterrent as is CCTV because there
will always be another house nearby with no
visible security measures – why take the risk of
being caught? But keeping the burglar outside the
property is not always a factor in the measures
that homeowners consider.
Speaking to PSI about this problem Nigel
Hackett of Optex said: “For the homeowner it
makes absolute sense to be alerted when
someone is loitering by a window, backdoor shed
or garage. It gives them the opportunity to
prevent break-ins and stop potential burglaries.
Indoor PIRs alert homeowners to the immediate
threat to their property, but it can be too late as
valuables can still be stolen in seconds.
“With perimeter or early outdoor detection
systems however, if the homeowners are at home
they can switch on the lights, issue a warning and
remove the threat. If they are not in, but have
their alarm panel connected to their smartphone,
Homes with no security measures in place are five times
more likely to be burgled than those with simple security
measures such as window locks and deadlocks
www.psimagazine.co.uk
DOMESTIC
“Home owners are
becoming used to
advertisements from
equipment suppliers
pointing out e.g. how
they can check up on
their house using IP
cameras which can
be viewed over a
mobile phone while
sitting on a beach in
Thailand”
(from previous page)
they could ask a neighbour to check their
property for any sign of an intruder, or if CCTV
cameras are connected to the panel they can
verify an intrusion is taking place and call the
police.
“CCTV has become much more affordable and
homeowners tend to stick a couple of cameras of
the outside of their properties, but if those
cameras are not triggered by a detection system,
and not connected to an alarm transmission
system, they will only be used for evidence
purpose but not as prevention system,” says
Nigel. “A combination of outdoor PIR sensors
triggering CCTV cameras to provide visual
identification, and voice warnings issued by an
alarm monitoring station, will provide the best
property protection, and deter burglars. This type
of early detection system is widely used in
mainland Europe, but somehow there is a
misconception in the UK that any outdoor
detection system might trigger false alarms. In
our experience however, with the right sensor
technology outdoor detection does work, and is
even more efficient when connected to cameras
and helps homeowners and businesses prevent
theft.”
So having external security is a must in order
to try to make a home less of a target but how do
you deal with a population that ranks “Whether
immediate neighbours have children who are
likely to scream” almost twenty places higher in
their top 50 concerns than home security?
Perhaps in the long run the willingness to run
domestic functions through smartphone will bring
security further to the fore. There are plenty of
solutions from established intruder alarm
manufacturers that have apps for mobile access
and these can also link to other home automation
devices so there are options already for those that
want a professional-level smartphone enabled
solution.
Yet it is perhaps the rapid growth in the
hardware store DIY alarm market that may drive
homeowners towards the professional system
once they realise that their £99 wireless home
intruder system just doesn’t cut the mustard
when it comes to protecting their most expensive
asset, but this is a long process especially when
so many people admit to not even having external
lighting.
Speaking to PSI back in 2015, Alex Carmichael
of the SSAIB told us the keys to the problem and
his comments still resonate today: “Relevant
factors here may include the cost of installation,
maintenance and monitoring, the different nature
of protective risks facing householders compared
with businesses, insurance requirements, and the
relative lack of awareness among home owners –
witness, for example, the number of houses still
using ‘Type B’ unmonitored intruder alarms.
Householders simply do not expect to make use
of the type of sophisticated electronic security
that a commercial security manager would regard
as a basic necessity,” he said.
“Yet this scenario is changing and represents
an opportunity for installers and system
integrators to take advantage of these evolving
circumstances. At this point in the technology
cycle, for instance, surveillance is more
adaptable, user-friendly and price competitive
than it’s ever been. Home owners are becoming
used to advertisements from equipment suppliers
pointing out e.g. how they can check up on their
house using IP cameras which can be viewed over
a mobile phone while sitting on a beach in
Thailand. What’s more, they can walk into High St
shops such as Maplin and see this kit on the
shelves for themselves. At the same time, recent
stories about increasing withdrawal of police
response to domestic break-ins are gathering
pace in the media.
“From a commercial business perspective then,
so far, so good. But the dangers of DIY security
are manifest – as are the claims that watching a
burglar breaking in on your phone whilst
hundreds or even thousands of miles away is
either an easy or practical solution to such risks.
Security providers therefore need to explain and
promote the benefits of professionally specified,
installed and monitored systems – including the
advisability of 'Type A' monitored intruder alarms
to provide 24/7 monitoring to ensure continued
police response,” advised Alex.
“For public reassurance, residential customers
need only use a certificated installer to gain the
many benefits available from such an accredited
body. I would urge certificated security companies
to sell the advantages they gain from this
accreditation and thereby steal a march on their
market competitors into the bargain.”
And that is vital in being successful with a
domestic installation. Remember that a
professionally installed intruder alarm system
comes with a number of benefits to the keyholder,
so be sure to focus on those; if security just isn’t
important enough to fund then customers will
need convincing if wavering due to cost.
Final words of advice for installer come from
RISCO’s Steve Riley: “Look at your value
proposition – why should a consumer choose you,
what can you offer them that an electrician can’t
and how do you differentiate yourself from your
competition? To quote Henry Ford ‘If you do what
you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always
got’. This has never been more relevant to the
security industry than it is today.”
is up to you to nominate the entries
for the competition
Have you used a piece of kit or a supplier that
has been mightily impressive over the last
twelve months? As a manufacturer of
electronic security systems do you think that your
company’s products and services deserve to be
recognised as the best that the sector has to
offer? We are now asking you to tell us what the
best products are and who gives the best service
for the PSI Premier Awards 2018.
Nominate online
The annual PSI Premier Awards campaigns have
recognised innovation and the highest achievers
that the industry has to offer from across a
number of disciplines for many years.
We are now asking for nominations for the
products and services and suppliers that
installers think are the best in the market. After
the deadline we will then collate all of the entries
and, where necessary, ask a number of installers
to give us their opinions on the nominated
systems. This will give us a final listing of entries
that we know will be without anomaly.
The types of technology we are looking for are
products that are different, not “me too” systems
and we want to hear about distributors that go
above and beyond box-shifting. The UK security
market is brimming with talent so we want to
make sure we feature the best new releases of
recent times and the suppliers that give the
highest levels of support.
The PSI Premier Awards Dinner will be held on
12th July at Warren Weir at Luton Hoo.
So please feel free to nominate your favourites
via the web page at:
PANEL
Concerned about the switch?
What will be the impact of the
transition to IP-only for the security
industry and what should installers
be doing to ensure that systems
they are fitting today will be
operational during and after the
changeover and do you have any
concerns about connectivity?
With many options now available for IP
connectivity, should we be concerned
that BT are looking to stop their PSTN
and ISDN services by 2025? The PSI Panel takes
a look at the future for connectivity...
Andy Fyvie – CSL
The main impact that the IPonly
(or Fibre First) transition
will have is that the new
digital telephone service will
run over broadband. DECT
technology, which is already
largely in use today, will power
phones meaning extension wiring will no longer
be required and any additional telephone
handsets in the home will just need a power
supply. As the security industry transitions to IPonly,
BT has confirmed it will work closely with
our sector to ensure the transition to digital is
as smooth as possible.
For the moment Installers should remain as
is. As BT firms up its plans and more detail
emerges Installers will be able to make fully
informed decisions on the right signalling
products for their needs. In addition, BT will be
providing analogue adapters so in most cases
there should be no requirement to change the
hardware. Industry and trade bodies are also
working together to bring clarity and
understanding on the effects of these changes
as BT’s plans develop further.
David Davies – DVS
With correct planning and
support, I don’t see this move
as a stumbling block as it’s
bringing the industry into the
21st century. Many
manufacturers have already
made the switch to offer a full
IP solution, be it in CCTV, alarm, access control
or at least offering both as a solution.
Both of the PSTN and ISDN have been around
for some time now (even longer than some of
the readers) and whilst these still provide stable
and reliable connection methods, by today’s
standards these are outdated and somewhat
slow compared to what even domestic
broadband can offer. Modern IP systems can
even offer considerable cost savings over
traditional connection methods, at greater
speeds and even less implementation costs.
However, in the UK we still have a large
amount of systems which use these older
transmission circuits and some will not have the
option to change a part to become compatible,
which could lead to a complete system
overhaul. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to
start to think about this now.
2025 is some time away, but when
considering entire housing estates with
complicated interconnected systems need to be
checked and revamped, it’s not that far away!
My current concerned is there are still a
worrying amount of rural locations that do not
have modern high speed broadband, and whilst
the government has put in place (continued over)
“With correct
planning and support,
I don’t see this move
as a stumbling block
as it’s bringing the
industry into the 21st
century”
PANEL
(from previous page)
certain assurances that these will all be
upgraded, for some, the older methods remain
the only method. In this instance these are the
systems that will need to be monitored and
acted upon closer to the deadline when new
systems have been put in place.
Laurence Kenny –
Pyronix
The transition to IP-only for
our industry is a trend that we
are already experiencing, as
mobile companies have begun
switching off TAP servers,
which are needed for text
messaging over PSTN.
As a result of this, PSTN is already becoming
an outdated and unreliable communication
method in the digital world, where smart device
applications, integrated systems and wireless
technology is the norm.
As IoT technology introduced new
opportunities, the following technological
developments for security solutions have more
emphasis towards smart device applications
and push notifications.
With solutions becoming smarter and more
connected as PSTN declines, there has been a
natural shift towards alternative communication
“PSTN is already becoming an outdated and unreliable
communication method in the digital world, where smart
device applications, integrated systems and wireless
technology is the norm”
methods with IP systems. Therefore, as ISDN
and PSTN are progressively switched off, we will
see an even greater shift towards alternate
communication methods, as systems become
increasingly integrated.
This will have a particular push towards Wi-
Fi, as this is a communication method that is
already commonplace, with the majority of
homeowners and businesses having an
established Wi-Fi connection that it is easy to
connect to.
To ensure longevity, installers need to be
fitting integrated IP security solutions that are
compatible with various communications
methods. This will ensure that whatever the
communication preference is now, the security
system can deliver the desired function for the
end user; with the flexibility to switch
communication method for the installer.
This approach will enable the installer to
benefit from the opportunities integrated
security solutions presents, without placing a
time limit on the systems they are fitting.
Richard Jenkins – NSI
As has been well-documented,
BT, the largest provider of
fixed-line, mobile and
broadband services in the UK,
is bringing its UK telephone
services into the digital age
with a digital upgrade rolling
out between the end of this year and 2025.
Security alarm manufacturers and installers
alike should be aware that in future signalling
solutions will connect via a router, with tamper
proof wiring becoming a thing of the past. With
digital comes many new opportunities including
improved telemetry. Fully digital networks
enable alarm devices to be more easily
interrogated remotely by users and
maintenance providers, with valuable
information on the device and the ability to
quickly and simply check an alarm system’s
status, all of which requires designs that ensure
the security of data and networks from cyber
attack.
As part of this year’s NSI Summit, John
Livermore from BT will be presenting a session
on the subject of the transition; Understanding
BT’s Digital Voice Programme. The presentation
explains BT’s plans, how they will affect the
alarm industry as well as the opportunities that
will open up using ALL IP.
Meet the installer
Security life with Martin Shearer of
Tamar Security in Exeter
Do you use a distributor or buy direct from
manufacturers?
Both. We have very good relationships with all of
our manufacturers direct, however some do not
sell direct and others will only deal direct. For me
it is also about the support received, be that
information and training on new products,
technical support for the engineers and delivery /
return processes.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Yes, for many reasons. The opportunities for work
it gives us that may not be open to others due to
specifiers / insurers requirements. The support
and guidance the NSI are able to help us with,
whether that's on a technical basis for compliance
or continued improvement in our quality systems.
I also believe that in time the whole industry will
be regulated much better and accreditation will
be a prerequisite. To say every engineer would
need an apprenticeship or qualification may be
unrealistic, but every company, whether that's a
one man band or large corporations, should be
regularly assessed for technical competence and
compliance to relevant standards and health and
safety obligations. This can only make the
industry better.
What would be a typical project for you?
At present a large proportion of our work is
intruder alarm installation and maintenance.
Tamar was built on an ethos of high levels of
customer service, in a largely domestic
demographic. We like to know our customers and
all our installations are designed for them, and
the way they use their properties. Our
installations can range from a three-bedroom
semi- to a large commercial unit.
What would make your job easier?
Customers not saying “but I can buy it on the
internet for .....?!” Some people are surprised
how much a professionally installed and
maintained system can cost.
Do you think there is a skills shortage in
the industry?
I do believe there is a skills shortage. Having
started at the bottom of the ladder myself, I
believe in taking on young talent, training, and
helping their career and knowledge develop. The
problem we have in the South West is finding a
training provider that is running the new fire and
security apprenticeship. Over the last ten or so
years some large local independent companies
who used to enter 8/9 apprentices onto the old
City & Guilds security systems course have been
acquired by national or international firms and the
demand for the course has reduced dramatically
and hence it is no longer financially viable for the
training providers to run the course. Our last
apprentice was four years ago, and I am glad to
say he is still with us. I'm pleased to say I have
recently found out, with the help of Apprentices
for Fire and Security (A4FS.org), that the new
Trailblazer apprenticeship is running at Yeovil
College so we are actively looking for an
apprentice to start on the next intake. My
frustration is that I hear people moaning about a
lack of skills, but there doesn't seem to be
enough effort on the employers’ part to find the
right learners and courses to put them on. Of
course apprentices take up time and resources
and you have to invest in them, but the good ones
are worth it and you will reap the benefits in the
long term.
together raising standards
“We love our
frequently get new
enquiries asking if
we can install ASAP!
We do our best!”
(continued from previous page)
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
Can you install it this week? We love our
customers but we frequently get new enquiries
asking if we can install ASAP! We do our best!
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
Not so much a myth but a misconception. Many
times I hear “what's the point in having a police
response, they'll never come; they're too busy!”
So often I see ARC activation logs where the
police officers have attended site before the
keyholders! Depending on your requirements,
and very often insurance stipulations, there is still
a need for the URN and automatic police
response.
What will be the impact of smart/home
automation on the security sector?
Too many companies are attempting to enter the
market and I feel it is flooding and devaluing the
security industry. There's a market for what I call
'comfort cameras', those that you can check if the
kids have got home from school OK or if the dog is
OK whilst you are at work. Plenty of intruder
alarm manufacturers now provide these types of
cameras that can integrate with alarm systems
and they can also provide visual verification for
self-monitoring alarm activations. They are
definitely a useful tool if installed correctly but
these are not CCTV systems.
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
Yes, but it may be a while!
What would you do if you won £25,000?
Have a very lavish holiday with all my family!
CCTV
Cameras with benefits
We’re all familiar with video
analytics, however in this feature we
look at three of the most popular
functions and also look at how
some cameras are adapted to
improve performance
The use of cameras for security surveillance
The great electronic security system market
growth of the last couple of decades has been
owned by the development and widespread use of
CCTV. From the early days of closed analogue
systems right through the resolution rise and
networking of cameras, sales have been rapid
despite some media outlets portraying the
‘snooping’ angle (the same outlets that freely show
video footage of wanted people). CCTV is a
commoditised purchase these days; whoever
would have thought that there would be a category
in retail called DIY CCTV? But in essence the market
for surveillance has grown because it provides a
service that people want – deter criminals and if
that’s not enough, record them in action.
While the market of the 00’s was very much
taken up with the rise in resolution of the cameras
the 10’s has seen a shift towards the software side
of the technology. As the resolution of the average
camera being installed has risen so has the
amount of data being recorded and today we have
While the market of the 00’s was very much taken up
with the rise in resolution of the cameras the 10’s has
seen a shift towards the software side of the technology
an industry that looks at what it can do with this
data in addition to the security function. Therefore
it means that the analytics function of specialised
cameras can be reproduced by software behind
the scenes. Dedicated cameras with the capability
built-in are not the only way to add functionality
to a unit, and then there’s SaaS which can allow
the addition of analytics seemingly without any
groundwork or technology changes. As is the way
of the electronics sector, there is more than one
way of doing things.
This is not to say that in the future we will only
upgrade software in order to add new disciplines
to a video surveillance system, but it probably
means that the lifespan of cameras will be
extended with most being happy with an
occasional firmware upgrade to allow the latest
software to be associated with the camera. Of
course anyone with a smartphone will tell you
that eventually the latest firmware upgrade won’t
work on a phone that is deemed too old to be
supported so there will always be a need to
update physical hardware, but if your camera is
1080 or 4K you’re probably future-proofed for a
good while yet.
Despite the strength of the analytics you can
add to a camera there is still very much a market
for specialised cameras that have a built-in
function, often with this function front and centre
of its development. For example, a thermal
camera can operate with no light at all, while
regular cameras utilise IR to allow night use. And
much like the “what shall we do with all of this
data?” thinking regarding the use of standard
cameras, these specialised cameras can be used
for more than the most obvious purpose.
In some cases (as with video smoke) the
analytics function is built-in to the camera without
the camera needing any modification, while
others such as thermal cameras will be adapted
units. Here we look at some of the most common
specialised camera functionalities and analytics.
We have not included motion detection as this is
so widespread it has become a default service.
Thermal cameras
Thermal cameras were originally developed for
military purposes, but today the technology is
being used for many different application areas
and has proven an effective measure in the
security field. Buildings and borders can be
monitored by thermal cameras, spotting people
that may not be obvious to the eye, traffic flows
can be analysed and fires can be recognised with
heat spots.
CCTV
(from previous page)
Thermal imaging technologies are always
based on the same principal: Invisible thermal
energy emitted from a person or an object is
transferred into visible images using electrical
pulses. Temperature differences captured by
those cameras are displayed in different
grayscales. Because thermal energy has a higher
wavelength than visible light, thermal cameras
providing high quality images in bright sunlight as
well as in complete darkness. Furthermore
images are not being affected by difficult weather
conditions like heavy rain, fog or snow. Therefore
24-hour surveillance is fully guaranteed.
A range of lens angles allows cameras to cover
long distances and large areas, thus a huge
amount of operating and labour costs can be
saved. Thermal cameras also offer further
benefits compared to other night vision devises;
firstly no light at all is needed to provide a high
image quality and secondly also hidden objects or
persons become visible. Thus 100 percent
surveillance can be guaranteed even in areas such
as forests. Additionally thermal cameras including
intelligent video analytics can trigger alarms
caused by sudden temperature changes like fire.
Thermal cameras have become a good choice
as a sensor for “seeing in the dark” because at
night background objects tend to be cooler than a
person at 98.6 degrees. Under ideal conditions,
people are well emphasised at night because they
appear brighter than the background and stand
out, even in zero light.
However outdoor security conditions are rarely
“ideal”, especially during the day when darker
objects absorb the sun’s energy and heat up, an
effect known as Thermal Loading. When objects in
the scene become uniformly hot in any given area,
many cameras have difficulty mapping the narrow
range of temperature differences into a useful
Thermal imaging used to be a
very expensive technology for
military users only. Today,
more and more people are
discovering the technology
and the benefits it has to offer
image. The result is an image with large areas
that look “whited out” or “greyed out” and
undefined. This makes it difficult to see what is
happening in the scene, and it makes it difficult
for some thermal cameras to automatically detect
intruders accurately.
Thermal imagery is very rich in data, sensing
small temperature variations down to 1/20th of a
degree. Thermal cameras must convert these fine
temperature variations – representing 16,384
shades of grey – into about 250 grey scales to
more closely match the capability of human vision
to decipher shades of grey. In the past, many
thermal cameras converted this data in a
simplistic way by mapping gross areas together
that are close in temperature.
New cameras with a high-level of image
processing can emphasise small variations
between objects and the background to
exaggerate the fine details and present a clearer
image in contrast to other image features, while
automatically detecting intruders accurately,
every day, every night, under all outdoor
conditions.
The use of thermal imaging technology and the
public’s awareness of its capabilities has
increased dramatically in the last decade. Thermal
imaging used to be a very expensive technology
for military users only. Today, more and more
people are discovering the technology and the
benefits it has to offer. The most recognised name
in this market is Flir however manufacturers such
as Hikvision, Dahua etc all offer thermal systems.
In tandem with the increased price drop of
thermal imaging cameras, another important
trend is notable in the market: miniaturisation.
Recent advances in miniaturising thermal imaging
technology have led to the production of very
small camera cores which allows integrators to
build lightweight vision systems. This has also led
to the use of handheld devices for monitoring
manufacturing processes for potential problems
in a factory or for checking the environmental
credentials of buildings.
When it comes to seeing in the dark another
option, as stated earlier, is a camera with IR and
IR lighting in general but the choice of camera
does depend on how much information you want.
For example an IR camera might not be as
sensitive when it comes to spotting someone in
the dark at distance, but it will give you more
44
chance of identifying a person if they are caught
on camera.
And as a footnote, just to dispel a myth,
thermal cameras are not used in hostage
situations to check the number and position of
people inside a building. Now you now.
Video smoke/fire detection
Video smoke detection cameras are an interesting
option in this market as they often are, in fact,
standard cameras with built-in flame, smoke and
motion detector capabilities to identify and
analyse smoke at the start of a fire. This enables
users, located on site or remotely, to raise the
alert and take appropriate action earlier than
detection systems that require the physical
contact of smoke for activation.
Fire/smoke detection cameras are particularly
useful in cavernous buildings such as tunnels or
large lobby areas which present a tricky problem
for fire and security planners. The VSD system
works by detecting smoke patterns as well as
changes in brightness, contrast, shape, motion,
colour matching, content and loss that could
indicate the early stages of a fire. Visual
verification, on or off site, can determine if the
situation warrants further action.
There are a number of companies developing
VSD solutions including Xtralis, Fike and FireVu as
the appeal of the earliest possible warning of a
fire is a strong one. Axis has also entered this
market with a partnership with Araani, the
developers of SmokeCathcer software. The
combined ability to monitor flame, smoke and
movement in one unit raises the alarm very
quickly and reportedly make it considerably easier
to trace the cause of the fire.
ANPR
We all know about the use of Automatic Number
Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras on the roads,
but the technology is older than you might think.
It was actually developed by police scientists in
the 70s and originally trialled on the A1 and
Dartford crossing.
The public occasionally confuse ANPR cameras
with the systems that use radar beams to measure
the speed of a vehicle. The confusion may have
arisen because it has become increasingly
common to combine ANPR with radar-based
speed cameras in point-to-point systems.
The technology works by utilising the same
kind of software that is used to read documents
on an office scanner. Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) facilitates the electronic
conversion of text and if required can be linked to
a vehicle database for the control of vehicles
around a site.
Just as the image quality of CCTV cameras has
got rapidly higher so has the processing speed of
ANPR software. This is no more made obvious by
the fact that one of the original sites for ANPR, the
Dartford river crossing, switched to an entirely
ANPR system for its toll collection. With an
average 130,000 vehicles per day using the bridge
and tunnel this is a clear indication of the speed at
which the latest cameras can process information.
If the busiest toll point in the UK can operate
ANPR then no other application should be a
problem for installers.
Conclusion
Specialised cameras are not always about the
software capabilities of the units and how the unit
itself has been developed to get the best out of
the programming – other specialised cameras
have physical capabilities enabled by the use of
motors, housings to track targets and withstand
harsh environments and in the case of drones,
enable cameras to fly. Hardware improvements
such as better infra-red are widening the scope of
what standard cameras can do, but a specialised
camera is dedicated to getting the best possible
result for a specific duty and is cited in the correct
position for this.
As previously stated the software side of
technology development is probably the main
growth area as opposed to that of continuing to
increase the resolution of the cameras, but with
any increased resolution comes more data and
more data does tend to lend itself to additional
business intelligence uses. The use of security
systems for non-security purposes is another one
of the main trends we are seeing today and the
use of specialised cameras and analytics can
provide plenty of information in this area as well.
Araani’s SmokeCatcher on Axis
cameras is ideal for use in tall
buildings or large indoor spaces
where smoke might never reach a
traditional smoke detector
With any increased resolution comes more data
and more data does tend to lend itself to
additional business intelligence uses
World class winners
This month Jim Rathbone looks at
how you can learn from world class
sales organisations and how they
achieve stellar results
re you concerned about the performance
Aand productivity of your sales team? Do
you wish your salespeople were
generating more new prospects and more
consistently delivering, even exceeding,
targets? Do you struggle to find good
salespeople and retaining them when
recruited?
I was struck recently by the Heiman Miller
global study of how the behaviours of worldclass
sales organisations differ from those of
the average sales organisations. Much of what
this study points out is relevant to fire and
security installers.
So let’s look at the behavioural
characteristics of world-class sales
organisations. They fall into five distinct areas:
Managing and creating sales
opportunities
World-class sales organisations keep their
sales funnels full of high-quality opportunities
by applying well-defined prospecting plans.
These plans include a combination of marketing
driven lead generation and prospecting
activities led by the sales team.
World-class sales organisations have
formalised value propositions that are very
compelling to their prospects. Such propositions
make it clear why a prospect should buy from
you vs your competition and evidences this with
case studies and testimonials.
World-class sales organisations have
developed consistent criteria for the types of
accounts and opportunities they want to pursue
and walk away from those that aren’t a good fit.
Bottom-line is that world-class sales
organisations consistently follow a standardised
process to target, pursue, attract and qualify
opportunities.
Managing and converting
opportunities
World-class sales organisations have a clearly
defined sales process to guide them in winning
new business. This includes developing a clear
understanding of the customers’ issues and
priorities prior to creating a solution to fit their
needs. It also includes mechanisms for
identifying where the customer is in their buying
process. Both disciplines are hallmarks for
successful management of opportunities.
Managing and deepening
relationships
World-class sales organisations proactively
manage relationships, especially at
the senior levels. Their salespeople spend more
time with key accounts than their equivalents in
average sales companies. This makes these
companies effective at both account retention
and driving year on year revenue growth with
existing accounts.
Key account management is central to this.
The sales team regularly collaborates across
departments to manage key accounts. They
conduct account reviews and documented
account plans - which are not so much about the
next project as they are about developing
strategies to increase sales and wallet share,
about strengthening relationships and
improving service levels.
Managing and developing
salespeople
Sales managers in world- class sales
organisations have developed highly effective
coaching skills. They have moved way beyond
being good salespeople themselves and are
adept at guiding, encouraging, supporting and
leading their sales teams. They do not hold on
to knowledge to defend their power base but
share it widely to help others develop.
World-class sales organisations know what
makes their top performers successful and use
that information to improve the performance of
World-class sales organisations
know what makes their top
performers successful and use
that information to improve the
performance of their sales force
as a whole
their sales force as a whole. They leverage best
practices of top performers to improve everyone
else. Top performers are valued not only for the
revenue they generate, but also for what they
offer to help improve other members of the
sales team. Recognising, documenting, and
sharing best practices are activities that return
value in quota achievement. Putting top
performers into mentor roles can motivate and
equip others to raise their game.
Sales managers in world-class sales
organisations have a highly effective process for
getting new hires to full productivity. As a result,
these organisations experience faster ramp up
times and increased salesperson productivity.
Managing and driving
implementation
Sales performance measurements in world-class
sales organisations are concretely aligned with
business objectives. For fire and security
installers this can mean paying the sales team
on gross profit sold, not on sales order value,
and giving them service and maintenance as
well as installation targets.
World-class sales organisations maximise the
time that salespeople spend with customers and
provide technology tools, strong performance
measurement and in-house support to allow
them to achieve this. Clear data – on results,
activity and opportunity/pipeline - provide
historical, current and future perspectives to
hold salespeople to account for delivering high
performance.
Take some time to discuss at your next sales
meeting what you can learn and apply from
world-class sales organisations in your own
business. Why not start with one simple
composite question: What share of your key
customers’ fire and security spend are you
winning, what could it be, what do you need to
do to make that happen?
Microwave intrusion detection system
creates protection zone
Microguard from Advanced Perimeter Systems uses microwave
beams whereby a transmitter generates a microwave beam in
order to create a protection zone. If a difference within that
zone is detected by the receiver, the system kicks in with an
immediate analysis and an alarm is triggered if the predetermined
criteria for an intrusion are met.
The range of features includes multi-level sensitivity
adjustment, automatic range adjustment and high RFI and EMI
immunity. Moreover, the microwave sensitivity is unaffected by
adverse weather conditions such as heavy fog, rain and snow.
Based on the PXB Professional Beam Series,
the TXF-125E offers several advantages when
Active Infrared Beams (AIRs) are employed.
The wide beam pitch ensures stability and
reduces the possibility of unwanted
activations from wildlife and detritus, and the
IP65 design ensures integrity regardless of
the installation conditions, preventing ingress
from water, dust and insects whilst allowing
condensation.
The four-channel selection allows the
stacking of beams, and the use of multiple
beams on linear installations, further assisted
by a transmitter power selection option,
allowing the user to choose 25/50/75/100m
FIRE SAFETY
New for 2018: National Qualifications
in Fire Detection and Alarms
The Fire Industry Association is now pleased to offer a series of
qualifications developed by its own nationally-regulated Awarding
Organisation for the fire detection and alarm sector. Here, the Trade
Association’s general manager Martin Duggan outlines the fine detail
One thing that has always been difficult for
security services businesses looking to
expand into the fire alarm sector is simply
knowing where to start. Fire detection and alarms
are not about simply adding a few cables and a
detector. Rather, there are various fire-related
standards, Codes of Practice and pieces of
legislation with which to contend.
All of this can be confusing for those starting to
look into branching out from security into
designing and installing fire detection and alarm
systems, since security systems don’t have the
same stringent legislation governing them. Now,
there’s good news afoot for those searching for the
first rung on the ladder in the fire world.
The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has officially
launched four new qualifications in fire detection
and alarms: one each for design, installation,
maintenance and commissioning fire detection and
alarm systems. The qualifications are designed to
give those entering the fire detection world a
thorough education and a set pathway into the
industry. For those that have been operating within
the fire services sector for some time now, this
development provides the chance to prove their
level of expertise and competence.
The qualifications are the newest initiative by
the FIA, with the first unit launched in January
2018. The other units are being rolled out over the
course of the year, with the FIA currently taking
bookings for the first unit of the new qualifications.
What will you actually study if you enrol? The
first unit is the Foundation Unit in Fire Detection
and Alarms. This unit has some pre-learning
attached to it: a series of instructional videos that
will help learners when they reach the classroom
for two days of learning followed by an
examination. It’s a totally new format – the prelearning
videos give learners the flexibility of when
to learn before they enter the classroom, while the
two days in the classroom teach and reinforce a
wide range of principles covered in the videos.
“There’s good news
afoot for those
searching for the first
rung on the ladder in
the fire world”
2
www.risk-uk.com

There’s also a lot of new information that’s
presented in the class. Learners are given a
handbook on arrival to take away and keep (and
use for revision before the examination).
There’s huge benefits to be gained here. The
Foundation Unit sets learners up with an extensive
and wide range of knowledge to undertake the
remaining units of the qualification pathway.
Learners will gain an extensive knowledge of fire
detection and alarm systems, legislation, fire
science, fire risk assessments and necessary
documentation, as well as the related British
Standards for design, installation and testing.
Each unit of the qualification ends in an
examination. It’s all new and different due to the
fact that this isn’t simply a training course, but a
nationally-recognised qualification.
To reach this point in launching the
qualification, the FIA had to create a separate
Awarding Organisation, the FIA AO, and formally
register with Ofqual (the Government Office of
Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) as a
qualification provider. This means that the
examination process is subject to the same strict
rules as any other qualifications in the UK – taken
in silence, overseen by an invigilator and with no
notes or books to help. This is far more formal than
the previous training offered by the FIA, but
candidates will be relieved to know that the first
month of the Foundation Unit since launch on 4
January has shown a steady 80% pass rate.
Taking the Foundation Unit in Fire Detection and
Alarms now means that those doing so will be
among the first to be qualified designers, qualified
installers, qualified maintainers or qualified
commissioners. Early adoption of the qualification
means that technicians will be able to start
working in those areas sooner, being able to apply
what they have learned to their job roles.
Of course, the qualifications are all theory
based, so experience out in the field in a practical
sense will also be required in order to make a
technician competent, but the qualifications
certainly add an extra professional layer.
After passing the Foundation Unit in Fire
Detection and Alarms, learners will study three
other units to obtain the full qualification: Health
and Safety, the Environment and then one
advanced unit in either design, installation,
maintenance or commissioning. These units are
taken in any order (the graphic on the right shows
just one route, with the only rule being that
candidates must take the Foundation Unit in the
first instance).
The Foundation Unit in Fire Detection and
Alarms, released last month, has had some
“Learners will gain an extensive knowledge of fire detection
and alarm systems, legislation, fire science, fire risk
assessments and necessary documentation, as well as the
related British Standards for design, installation and testing”
positive feedback from candidates, with many of
them hopeful and looking forward to gaining the
full qualification later this year.
What has been made clear is that, although
much more intense than before (there’s around
double the content of the old training that the FIA
previously offered), there’s much more to learn
and, therefore, far more to be gained. It’s an
education, not just a certificate, and specifically
because of that, it will help to develop the careers
and businesses of those undertaking the
qualifications pathway.
www.risk-uk.com

FIRE SAFETY
“For those wishing to explore this avenue as an option
there’s the Route to Certification package, which includes
probationary FIA membership and the expert advice of a
consultant to help individuals through the certification
paperwork and auditing process”
The new qualifications pathway for the fire
industry is setting the scene for a professional
environment of highly knowledgeable technicians
who can not just do their jobs and go home at the
end of the day, but identify problems quickly and
efficiently and recommend with confidence the
correct course of action to solve them.
For the technician, it’s a chance at an education
and a career path. One thing that echoes round
and round our industry is that there really isn’t a
clear career path for technicians in the fire
industry. The new qualifications hope to change all
that by delivering the education side of things,
which should complement practical experience.
For employers, it’s also a big win. By placing
technicians on the qualification pathway, they’re
giving their staff the opportunity of that career
path and progression. You would hope the result
would be that employers are more likely to have a
more loyal and engaged workforce who are more
efficient at their jobs.
Companies can now start working in the fire
sector and begin thinking about gaining that allimportant
certification for working in fire detection
and alarms, increasing the amount of jobs that
Nittan Evolution Fire Detection:
Unparalleled Design, Unique Features
he Nittan Group has been at the forefront of the international fire
Tprotection industry since 1954 and operates sales, R&D and manufacturing
bases in Japan, China, Sweden and here in the UK. The company was
established in 1972 in the UK and now supplies in excess of 500,000 detectors
per year, all of which are made to marine standard for exceptional quality.
Nittan’s Evolution analogue addressable and conventional fire detection
equipment is renowned for its reliability with a very high degree of protection
against false alarms. This equipment has been successfully operating in fire
detection systems around the world for many years now, but most recently has
been expanded to offer customers a first class and complete end-to-end BS EN
54-13:2005-certified systems solution.
At the very heart of this first class Evolution system from Nittan are a number
of unique features for the practising fire safety professional...
Utmost reliability
Evolution is based on Nittan’s advanced, highly
flexible FSK digital open protocol, which is
uniquely resistant to noise. The FSK protocol
also allows for substantial amounts of
information to be transmitted back to the panel,
but without message collision and with minimal
transmission errors due to a sophisticated data
packet mechanism with built-in parity and
check-sum features. The communication
protocol is capable of very high speeds and not
affected by the number of devices on the loop.
Maximum flexibility
Evolution comes with
sophisticated EEPROM
addressing and 254 addresses
per loop for maximum flexibility
and convenience in system
design, as well as providing a
highly cost-effective fire system
solution from reduced cabling
and installation work.
Award-winning
detection
technology
Nittan’s patented, awardwinning
Dual Optical
technology is unique to Nittan
and provides an excellent
solution to false alarms in
those locations prone to steam
and dust, including hotels,
student accommodation, hospitals and other
areas of multiple occupancy. Using the scattered
light principle inherent in optical detectors,
Nittan’s Dual Optical detectors go one step
further and use both IR and blue LEDs to provide
a more accurate measurement of particles
within the chamber.
By calculating the ratio of these light
sources, which operate at different
wavelengths, the detector can determine the
particle size and distinguish between smoke
and non-combustion products. This remarkable
technology has been incorporated into Nittan’s
Evolution EV-DP analogue addressable and EVC-
DP conventional detectors.
Comprehensive product range
Using engineering expertise, Nittan’s Evolution
fire detection products are designed to work
together in perfect harmony and each type has
been rigorously tested.
Evolution detectors include Optical, Heat,
Multi and Dual Optical variants. A number of
detectors are unique to Nittan, including the
Dual Optical (see above) and the EV-PS (which
comes supplied with an in-built sounder for
quick and simple installation).
evo+ and Evolution Series fire alarm control
panels are fully-compliant with BS EN54 Parts 2
and 4, with evo+ further certified to BS EN 54-
13:2005, the latest European Standard that
ensures optimal fire system performance.
Both ranges are built to meet the highest
quality standards and provide many years of
reliable service. Each has been designed with
specific features and benefits in mind to suit
different market segments.
In addition, Evolution is home to a range of
manual Call Points, DDA-compliant looppowered
audio visual devices, modules for the
monitoring and control of many types of third
party equipment, isolators and plenty of
accessories for all eventualities.
All Evolution products come with EN54
approvals and are certified by either the LPCB,
VdS, the DBI or Intertek for total peace of mind.
Combining PA and voice evacuation
Designed for small to
medium-sizes
applications Paviro
from Bosch offers a
unique, high-quality
Public Address and
EN54-certified voice
evacuation system
“At the maximum
configuration level,
the Paviro system can
address up to 984
zones with a total of
164,000 Watts of
amplifying power in
one system”
ith more than 100 years of experience in
Wthe design and development of electroacoustic
technology, Bosch is an
established world leader in Public Address (PA),
evacuation systems and professional quality
sound systems. It’s also world-renowned for its
commitment to superior technology, stylish
design and ease-of-use. The latest powerful
example of this commitment is the PAVIRO PA
and voice evacuation system.
Paviro is a combined PA and voice evacuation
system that offers outstanding audio quality.
The systems can be configured to optimise
system costs and, being extremely efficient in
its power consumption, Paviro sets a new
standard in the field of combined PA and voice
evacuation systems.
For small to medium-size applications, Paviro
offers a unique, high-quality PA and EN54-
certified voice evacuation system. Paviro also
delivers professional quality sound thanks to its
premium 24-bit digital processor, superior
digital-to-analogue converters and outstanding
Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR).
Paviro’s highly flexible, modular system
architecture makes it an attractive and complete
system solution for small to medium-sized
installations. As a sound reinforcement solution,
Paviro offers Best in Class audio quality.
Paviro offers extreme flexibility usually found
in significantly more expensive systems thanks
to its system-wide, four-channel matrix
architecture. Up to four audio signals such as
announcements or playback music can be
distributed simultaneously to different
loudspeaker zones. At the
same time, individual
announcements in any
zone don’t interrupt
music in the other zones.
The optional integration
of additional audio
systems via two of the
amplifier’s inputs
reduces the total number
of required amplifiers,
thus lowering the total
system cost as well as
associated operating costs. ‘Basic’ and
‘Expert’ configuration modes ensure ease of use
and allow a convenient and fast building of the
complete system architecture. The basic Wizard
mode provides a step-by-step configuration
guide, which makes it possible to program a
basic system within 30 minutes. The Expert
mode provides almost unlimited system design
flexibility – perfect for optimising configurations
in more complex and challenging applications.
Equipped with the optional Dante network
interface module (OM-1), it’s possible to create a
16-channel Dante audio network between the
individual controllers. This not only improves
the size, but the IP networking architecture also
allows end users to create network topologies
for larger areas via up to four decentralised
controllers. This means less cabling using
standard Ethernet connections and components
– a big cost-saving factor in some applications.
At the maximum configuration level, the
Paviro system can address up to 984 zones with
a total of 164,000 Watts of amplifying power in
one system, making the system suitable for
bigger installations in which a large number of
zones and loudspeakers are needed. It also
caters to existing installations whenever the
infrastructure of a building changes and
additional rooms have to be addressed. In
addition, the network configuration provides
redundant channels for safety purposes. In the
event of an emergency, these channels will
always work for evacuation signals even if a
controller loses network communication.
In addition to its low initial investment and
operational costs, Paviro offers class-leading
low power consumption. Combining dynamic
source routing and intelligent amplifier input
switching reduces the number of amplifiers
required and ensures a lower initial investment.
The use of high-efficiency Class D amplifiers,
as well as intelligent power-management
hardware and software, leads to the lowest
possible number of batteries needed at
purchase. This also reduces ongoing operational
running costs. Fewer batteries need to be
replaced on a regular basis, leading to a further
reduction of future maintenance costs for users.
FIRE SAFETY
Audible and Visual Protection
Pulse Alert Technology from Klaxon Signals is an award-winning beacon
warning system which produces a light output that can protect most
rooms with just a single device
“All buildings deserve
the latest fire
evacuation
technology, all fire
alarm systems should
be able to be
upgraded and
everyone deserves to
feel safe and secure”
odels in the Sonos Pulse range of EN54-
M23 compliant beacons and sounder
beacons are designed to ensure that all
personnel, including those individuals with
sensory impairments or working in sensory
depriving conditions, are notified of fire
emergencies. Featuring Pulse Alert Technology,
Klaxon’s EN54-23 compliant beacons enable
buildings to be evacuated much quicker, make
evacuation requirements clear and
unambiguous and allow personnel to feel safe.
Relying on audible fire alarm notification
alone disadvantages those people with hearing
impairments or those working, or living in
sound-reducing conditions. Even something as
simple as wearing a pair of headphones could
prevent someone from hearing an audible fire
evacuation warning. To evacuate everyone from
a building, fire systems need to signal
effectively using light as well as sound.
EN54-23 specifies the minimum performance
requirements for Visual Alarm Devices. Klaxon’s
Sonos Pulse beacons produce a light output
that can protect most rooms with the
installation of just a single device.
Optical systems disperse light evenly,
ensuring the most efficient distribution of light
to maximise effectiveness.
Klaxon’s Pulse Alert Technology affords all of
the benefits an EN54-23 compliant system can
bring, while at the same time answering all of
the design challenges.
Featuring the latest high-power LED
technology, Pulse Alert Technology contains
advance LED drive circuitry, further improving
efficiency, light output performance and longterm
device reliability. Sonos Pulse LED circuits
are designed to exceed five years of continual
operation without degradation of light output.
As a company, Klaxon firmly believes that all
buildings deserve the latest fire evacuation
technology, that all fire alarm systems should be
able to be upgraded and that everyone deserves
to feel safe and secure.
Installation
EN54-23 specifies three different classification categories for Visual Alarm Devices: Wall, Ceiling and Open. Wall and Ceiling mount
categories are specified at designated mounting heights and particular coverage pattern areas, as detailed by EN54-23. Open
classification allows the manufacturer to specify the coverage volume and coverage shape and doesn’t restrict mounting height.
Pulse Alert Technology has been designed to exceed the requirements of both Wall and Ceiling classifications, providing system
designers with simple device performance specifications.
Wall Classification
Wall-mounted devices provide a rectangular prism of light. Wall
classification devices with Pulse Alert Technology can be
mounted up to 3.1 m in height and cover an 11.3 m x 11.3 m area
Ceiling Classification
Ceiling-mounted devices provide a cylinder of light. Ceiling
classification devices with Pulse Alert Technology can be
mounted up to 3 m in height and cover a 15 m-diameter area
Redvision rugged CCTV cameras are helping to
protect and manage the British Steel site,
Scunthorpe. The surveillance system was
designed, supplied and installed by Videcom. It
comprised Redvision RV30 Rugged IP, PTZ
cameras; a Luxriot EVO Global Enterprise
recording system running on a Videcom Xeon
Server; and Dahua bullet cameras. The network
infrastructure used includes Silvernet wireless
transmission, reducing the need for expensive
civil works during installation, alongside
traditional CAT 5, copper cables.
John Crowston, British Steel Security & Fire
the system, along with the new control room
itself, was all meticulously planned and
executed by Videcom, as the site was in full
production throughout the process.
“The system itself is very user-friendly. Once
an operator spends time using the system, they
quickly build up a working knowledge of
functionality, such as retrieving, reviewing and
exporting recordings and event data. Three of
the four operators using the system had no prior
The building which now houses Glenrothes
Baptist Church was first constructed in the early
1960s and used as local authority offices.
Following its recent conversion into a place of
religious worship and, as such, a place of
needed a networked system that performed inline
with recent changes in fire safety
legislation.
Hochiki Europe’s ESP range of devices utilise
the Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP) which
gives installers the flexibility to incorporate
devices from multiple manufacturers.
Scottish Security and Fire Systems also chose
to specify Hochiki Europe’s FIREscape system, a
low-voltage, addressable, intelligent, LED
emergency lighting system.
Richard Wharram, Regional Sales Manager at
Hochiki Europe, explained: “In places of
assembly, such as churches, many people can
be affected by an emergency situation in a very
short space of time, which means fire safety
must be regarded with upmost importance.”
Matthew Marshall, Assistant Pastor of
Missions, said: “The new life safety system at
Glenrothes Baptist Church is easy to operate,
and its self-test ability is a great additional
feature. The new system will undoubtedly save
us time and money through energy savings over
the coming years.”
Security and communication solution
success between toll booth and plaza
Vanderbilt’s SPC was recently deployed to act as part of a security
and communication solution between a toll booth and plaza located
on the M1 between Dublin and Belfast.
At night time, the toll system is automated and therefore an
intruder alarm system was needed for protection. The distance
between the toll booth and plaza is 6.2 kilometres and the security
systems – SPC and video cameras – had to be able to connect and
operate over that distance so operators could get an overview of
activity at each site.
SPC replaced an existing Europlex legacy product that had the
IFS fibre drivers connected and working on multimode fibre over the
6.2 kilometre distance. Due to this distance, the fibre driver was
bespoke. Multimode is usually only specified for approximately two
kilometres. However, when the 3GS legacy system was replaced for
a new SPC panel, the communication over the fibre link stopped
working.
The installation company, Precision Security, previously had to
deploy a pair of fibre cables – two transmitters and two receivers –
to transmit the signal back and forth successfully. However, in
updating the site, they found that a single pair of ComNet fibre
units, straight from the box, could successfully execute the task,
despite only being specified for 4.5 kilometres.
The ComNet FDX60 multimode fibre units allowed the SPC X-Bus
transmission to be converted from RS485 protocols to optical and
back to RS485. This enabled the data between the SPC expanders
to travel further distances.
“ComNet came straight out of the box and was easy to use and to
install. Its threshold is only around four kilometres, but it is working
well beyond that,” stated Victor Fields of Precision Security, who
installed the fibre solution on site.
APPLICATION
Cougar Monitoring premises
upgraded to biometic security
Securenett Security Systems has upgraded the
access control technology at the Cougar
Monitoring alarm receiving and monitoring centre
based in Birmingham to improve the management
of access to the monitoring centre and offer a
convenient and reliable system for the
management and staff on site. An additional
requirement for the improved system was to
provide an extra layer of security with biometric
authentication.
Securenett recommended Paxton’s Net2 access
control solution, integrated with ievo readers for
New retail and office building
features bespoke doorsets
Assa Abloy UK Specification has delivered a
bespoke range of complete doorset solutions
worth £345,000 to London’s new retail and
office building near Farringdon Station.
The 16-storey commercial building, One New
Street Square, was designed to achieve the
Building Research Establishment Environmental
Assessment Method (BREEAM) ‘Excellent’
environmental standard through the use of
sustainable building methods throughout
construction.
The Assa Abloy UK Specification team
delivered 204 complete doorset solutions
including high-security steel doors, architectural
ironmongery and a range of door closers.
Tim Checketts, Specification Director, said:
“Our team worked very closely with the client,
architects and contractors to ensure that we
could recommend the most suitable solutions
for each aspect of the
multifaceted building to
combine the highest
security with premium
aesthetics.
“As the building aimed
to be BREEAM excellent
rated, it was important to
the client that we had a
good understanding of how
to integrate our products in
the building and still meet
the requirements of an
energy efficient building.
We were able to
biometric identification. The integration with the
ievo ultimate biometric readers, installed on all
external access points, offered an increased level
of security as every user on the Net2 system is
now required to provide a fingerprint which is
used to determine whether access is authorised,
in place of a physical token.
Operational areas of the facility were classed
as different access zones within the Net2 software
and employees working in each area were
assigned only the access permissions applicable
to their zone. Access to each zone is controlled by
ievo micro fingerprint reader identification points.
The biometric solution has eliminated the
reliance on physical tokens that are at risk of
being lost, stolen or shared, which can cause a
drain on costs and resources. By integrating
biometric readers with networked access control,
Cougar Monitoring’s specific requirements were
met, and the use of fingerprint authentication has
reinforced the level of site security, as well as
increasing the convenience for users.
Following the installation of the integrated
Net2 solution, the staff were trained on the use
and functionality of the ievo biometric readers.
The new system has since been praised by Cougar
Monitoring for its simplicity, effectiveness and
security improvements to the facility.
recommend an appropriate solution to achieve a
BREEAM Excellent rating through the EPDs and
WLC data associated within our products. This
meant we were able to provide a guaranteed
performance for the lifecycle of the building.”
Tim Halford, the Project Director at principal
contractor Skanska, said: “The BREEAM rating
was very important for this project, and the team
from Assa Abloy were on hand every step of the
way to help us achieve the rating and supply fit
for purpose solutions.”
appointed Roy Thomson as its new Business
here, I have been encouraged by the reaction from
potential customers to the new IP range,” he
says. “My goal is to raise ISM’s profile in the IP
market and ensure we are always part of the
