DOMESTIC Bringing security home According to a report last year around 70 per cent of British homes don’t have a burglar alarm fitted. why do homeowners appear to be so calm about security and what can installers do about it? Despite the fact that ONS figures show that there were 261,915 domestic burglaries between Oct 2016-Sept 2017, home security is apparently 43rd on the list of things we think about when moving house, said a poll of 2,000 adults by Yale during this same period last year. When reported by The Sun newspaper at the time, the number one priority when moving house is revealed as easy parking, followed by concerns over the council tax banding. But the issue of home security comes lower on the list, below considerations like whether neighbours would be able to see them sunbathing in the garden. Yale MD Nigel Fisher told the newspaper: “We weren’t expecting home security to be the first thing on people’s minds when moving house, but it has come much lower in the top 50 list than we’d have predicted. On the one hand it is reassuring that “what the local crime rates are like” has appeared in the top 10, as this would suggest some level of concern about safety.” Over a third of those questioned admitted that the last time they moved house they were more preoccupied about where things would go than home security. A further 64 per cent admit they don’t have much outside lighting, 57 per cent don’t have any trusted neighbours and 73 per cent don’t think to put lights and radios on timers when they go away. Nigel Fisher added: “Home Office figures have highlighted that you are almost twice as likely to be burgled in the first twelve months of being in a new home, so security should be at the forefront of people’s minds when moving.” The website Police.uk says that homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures such as window locks and deadlocks. In most burglaries reveals the site, the criminals broke into the house or flat through the door, either by forcing the lock or kicking it in. Unfortunately, as you will likely know, when it comes to security it is down to cost that is often the factor in whether or not people have security systems installed. Today’s IoT centric generation will happily spend over £1000 on a smart television and splash the cash on computers, games consoles and smartphones, but seem to be happy with using a system that is no more than a glorified webcam connected to their mobile to protect it all. And more often than not these networked cameras are inside the property when it is, frankly, too late to make any difference in the crime; there is no deterrence and no prevention. This is why it is essential that for good domestic security it is vital that the problem is looked at from the outside in, not the other way around. We know from the research carried out with reformed criminals that a visible alarm system is a deterrent as is CCTV because there will always be another house nearby with no visible security measures – why take the risk of being caught? But keeping the burglar outside the property is not always a factor in the measures that homeowners consider. Speaking to PSI about this problem Nigel Hackett of Optex said: “For the homeowner it makes absolute sense to be alerted when someone is loitering by a window, backdoor shed or garage. It gives them the opportunity to prevent break-ins and stop potential burglaries. Indoor PIRs alert homeowners to the immediate threat to their property, but it can be too late as valuables can still be stolen in seconds. “With perimeter or early outdoor detection systems however, if the homeowners are at home they can switch on the lights, issue a warning and remove the threat.
