CCTV Cameras with benefits We’re all familiar with video analytics, however in this feature we look at three of the most popular functions and also look at how some cameras are adapted to improve performance The use of cameras for security surveillance The great electronic security system market growth of the last couple of decades has been owned by the development and widespread use of CCTV. From the early days of closed analogue systems right through the resolution rise and networking of cameras, sales have been rapid despite some media outlets portraying the ‘snooping’ angle (the same outlets that freely show video footage of wanted people). CCTV is a commoditised purchase these days; whoever would have thought that there would be a category in retail called DIY CCTV? But in essence the market for surveillance has grown because it provides a service that people want – deter criminals and if that’s not enough, record them in action. While the market of the 00’s was very much taken up with the rise in resolution of the cameras the 10’s has seen a shift towards the software side of the technology. Therefore it means that the analytics function of specialised cameras can be reproduced by software behind the scenes. Dedicated cameras with the capability built-in are not the only way to add functionality to a unit, and then there’s SaaS which can allow the addition of analytics seemingly without any groundwork or technology changes. As is the way of the electronics sector, there is more than one way of doing things. This is not to say that in the future we will only upgrade software in order to add new disciplines to a video surveillance system, but it probably means that the lifespan of cameras will be extended with most being happy with an occasional firmware upgrade to allow the latest software to be associated with the camera. Of course anyone with a smartphone will tell you that eventually the latest firmware upgrade won’t work on a phone that is deemed too old to be supported so there will always be a need to update physical hardware, but if your camera is 1080 or 4K you’re probably future-proofed for a good while yet. Despite the strength of the analytics you can add to a camera there is still very much a market for specialised cameras that have a built-in function, often with this function front and centre of its development. For example, a thermal camera can operate with no light at all, while regular cameras utilise IR to allow night use. And much like the “what shall we do with all of this data?” thinking regarding the use of standard cameras, these specialised cameras can be used for more than the most obvious purpose. In some cases (as with video smoke) the analytics function is built-in to the camera without the camera needing any modification, while others such as thermal cameras will be adapted units. Here we look at some of the most common specialised camera functionalities and analytics. We have not included motion detection as this is so widespread it has become a default service. Thermal cameras Thermal cameras were originally developed for military purposes, but today the technology is being used for many different application areas and has proven an effective measure in the security field. Buildings and borders can be monitored by thermal cameras, spotting people that may not be obvious to the eye, traffic flows can be analysed and fires can be recognised with heat spots. 42 www.psimagazine.co.uk
