Pancake day traditions around
the world
By Maxwell masters
On thursday the 13th of February a highly
anticipated celebration takes place. It's none other
than PANCAKE DAY !That's right the day were we
forget all diet plans and eat more than we probably
should in a year. However some countries
celebrate ‘pancake day’ in a much different way
than we do. Here’s a list some of the surprising,
wonderful and somewhat odd pancake day
traditions around the world.
1.Spain
Spanish celebrations are much different to ours; on the thursday the week,
before ash wednesday, a carnival is started known as ‘Jueves Lardero’ or
‘Jolvelardero’. Shrove Tuesday (pancake
day) is called ‘Dia de la tortilla’, which
means ‘Day of the Omlette’! The
celebrations vary from town to town, but
generally it's a day to use up all the meat
and bread from your pantry and eat a
meal as a community to prepare for lent.
And of course, the main meal is an
omelette!
2.Denmark
Danish People sure have a sweet tooth! They
celebrate on the first sunday before lent by eating
these wonderful looking buns called ‘fastelavan’
which are filled with whipped cream and jam.
Moreover, the children dress up in any way they like,
some pirates, some fairies, others cats; they play a
game called hit the
cat out the barrel,
which used to entail
smashing a barrel
with a live cat inside until the cat got out.
However, luckily there are no longer cats in
the barrel, but rather sweets, making the
barrel sort of like a piñata- few!
