ALL YOU CAN EAT Fish & Chips (Cod or Catfish) By JESSICA MESZAROS For decades, the Moolah Shrine Circus has been inspiring kids of all ages to run away to the big top to enjoy carnival entertainment with deep roots in the community. The family-friendly Moolah Shrine Circus is the longest continuously running circus in the state of Missouri. The show got its start in 1942 in the St. Louis Public School Stadium. Later, it moved to Busch Stadium. Today, it calls the Family Arena “home.” The show boasts aerial ballet done by experienced trapeze artists, stunts performed atop motorcycles, a menagerie of impressive animals and clowns, of course. “Most of the acts are pretty similar to the ones from previous years, but they’ll be done by new performers so that always freshens things up a bit,” said Don Taylor, the Moolah Shriners’ Chief Rabban. The Chief Rabban is, by definition, the temple’s first vice president. This year, Taylor also is the temple’s circus chairman. “St. Louis is kind of unique because people in St. Louis know who the Shriners are, so they like to come out and help us,” Taylor said. “They respond to us. It lets them see who we are.” Who they are is a band of brothers that, according to their website, are “distinguished by an enjoyment of life and a commitment to philanthropy.” Their philanthropy includes a network of 22 pediatric specialty hospitals, including one in St. Louis that provides specialized care to children with orthopaedic conditions, @MIDRIVERSNEWS MIDRIVERSNEWSMAGAZINE.COM Moolah Shrine Circus keeps carnival experience alive for over 75 years Clowning around at the Moolah Shrine Circus. burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay. The annual Moolah Shrine Circus allows this band of brothers to “have a great time [and provide one while] helping kids.” Animals appearances in the show include elephants, horses, tigers, camels and more. Attendees also will be able to get up-close and personal with the animals. Ride opportunities for animals like the ponies and elephants will take place before the show, during intermission and after the show. People also will have the chance to take pictures of the performers or ride the children’s train during those times. The Moolah Clowns also will be offering face painting. All the proceeds from the fundraiser will go back to helping the Moolah Shriners. Circus season kicks off at 11 a.m. on March 10 with the 76th Annual Shrine Circus featuring colorful cars, floats and clowns. The parade steps off from Clark Street at its intersection with N. 2nd Street and travels south along Riverside Drive, located adjacent to Frontier Park. Spectators can park at the boathouse lot at Boone’s Lick Road and South Riverside Drive, which also is where the parade culminates. The three-ring spectacle takes place March 22-25 at the Family Arena, 2002 Arena Pkwy. in St. Charles. Multiple showtimes are available from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. depending on the day of the week. The 1 p.m. performance on March 25 will feature special seating for individuals with hearing impairments. All Hot Dogs & Sausages are custom made $ 12 99 $2.50 Any Beer Sundays 5-8pm ............... March 7, 2018 MID RIVERS NEWSMAGAZINE I 35 Mike’s Grill & Tap: A mom-and-pop burger joint with a well-rounded menu FACEBOOK.COM/MIDRIVERSNEWSMAGAZINE MIDRIVERSNEWSMAGAZINE.COM By Amy Armour Mike Holmes has been in the restaurant industry since he was a teenager, working as a dishwasher in a cafeteria in Jamestown Mall. He spent his summers bussing tables and running food for Jordan’s Restaurant in North County before going off to college and serving in the United States Navy. “I love the business. I love the people aspect,” said Holmes, who took ownership of Mike’s Grill & Tap in O’Fallon last July. After college, Holmes spent the better part of 15 years working at Citizen Kane’s Steakhouse before opening Sherlock’s Steak & Seafood with a business partner. His business partner at Sherlock’s bought him out and, on July 6, 2017, Holmes took the leap into sole ownership when he purchased Mike’s Grill & Tap. Located at 2447 Hwy. K in the Four Seasons Shopping Center, Mike’s Grill & Tap is known for its extensive craft beer Mike’s Grill & Tap selection and its juicy, high-end short rib burgers. With 24 craft beers on tap, the bar and grill offers beer options for all types of beer connoisseurs. From the light wheat beer, NOCO314 – named after Mike’s hometown – to the Angry Irish Wife, Guinness and Blue Moon, 19 of the taps rotate every seven to 10 days. The bar and grill also has more than 20 types of beers available in bottles. “I try to get stuff that not everyone has, that maybe is harder to find, but I also try to keep stuff that people want,” said Holmes. Holmes also will poll his customers to see what types of beers they would like to try. “Then, I’ll bring it in for them,” said Holmes. “At the end of the day, I put on there what people want.” The restaurant also offers a delectable variety of lunch and dinner choices for all palates. The extensive menu ranges from chicken wings and pretzels, to burgers and 2447 Hwy. The madefrom-scratch burgers are super-popular among diners, especially the ‘Mike’s Favorite’, which is a short rib and beef mixture patty topped with blue cheese crumbles, Applewood smoked bacon, homemade spicy tomato chutney and onion straws on a pretzel bun. The bar and grill offers special promotions nearly every day. A few weeks ago, the restaurant launched its mug promotion, giving customers the opportunity to purchase a T-shirt and tastefully engraved mug. The Tuesday special is an 8-ounce sirloin steak with the veggie and potato of the day. Sunday features an all-day happy hour. And, on Wednesdays, Holmes partners with Cupcake Amore to provide complimentary cupcakes to all customers. Mike’s Grill & Tap will cater events on- or off-site. The restaurant has a party room that can accommodate up to 25 people and the entire restaurant can be rented to host larger parties. The Mike’s Grill & Tap crew [from left] Graham, Sarah, Kristen, Mandy and Emily. “We’re just a little mom-and-pop with a good, well-rounded menu,” said Holmes. And customer service is of utmost importance to Holmes. “I believe that, even though it’s a hamburger, you should get the same service as if you were at a Ruth’s Chris or a Citizen Kane’s,” said Holmes. “What you buy shouldn’t determine the level of service you receive.” To check out the menu or what’s on tap, visit mikesgrillstl.com.
