EVERY
WEDNESDAY IS
BADGE DAY
2-FOR-1 TICKETS AT BIG BEAR SNOW PLAY
Badge-carrying personnel get two-for-one
lift tickets Wednesdays (non-holiday)
while enjoying inner tubing in the Southland
at Big Bear Snow Play.
Active law enforcement, fire, and military
personnel buy one lift pass and get another free
every Wednesday at Big Bear Snow Play. Just
show proper ID each Wednesday and get a free
lift ticket with the purchase of a pass. It’s a $35
value.
“It’s our way of giving back to those who
serve,” said Scott Voigt of Big Bear Snow Play.
Badge Days are available year-round when Big
Bear Speedway opens in April (weather permitting)
for timed kart racing on a Grand Prix-style
track.
Big Bear Snow Play, once a ski area known
as Rebel Ridge, offers worldclass inner tubing
on the longest runs in Southern California. As
the guns continue to blast jet streams of snow,
Big Bear Snow Play builds special features like
whoop-di-doos and berms in addition to its
traditional downhill runs.
For after dark thrills Big Bear Snow Play last
season debuted Glow Tubing night sessions,
as the runs are illuminated by changing strobe
lights that turn red, blue, yellow, and even
black lights. Night Glow Tubing is available on
Fridays, Saturdays, and holiday periods from
5-9pm.
Getting to the top of all the snow is easy
thanks to Magic Carpet uphill lifts that families
merely step on and off of. No uphill climb to
tire parents and kids out means they save all
their energy for downhill fun and get in all the
runs they want.
Snow gets groomed nightly at Big Bear Snow
Play to ensure the best possible conditions for
guests, who enjoy evenly-spread corduroy for
their downhill adventures. When it’s time for
a winter warm-up, head inside the heated base
lodge for family-priced snack bar and video
games and there’s plenty of paved parking.
Big Bear Snow Play is open daily for inner
tubing from 10am-4pm. All-day passes include
tube rental and Magic Carpet lift for $35. After
dark Glow Tubing sessions Fridays, Saturdays,
and holidays from 5-9pm are priced at $30 as
guests slide on fluorescent tubes under alternative
color lights.
IN RIVERSIDE
CULTIVATING AGRICULTURAL
ACTIVITIES ACROSS THE INLAND EMPIRE WITH
GROWRIVERSIDE
Since 2013, the City of Riverside has
been leading the Inland region when it
launched GrowRIVERSIDE (growriv.
com) to develop a local food economy that
increases access to nutritious foods by creating
economic opportunities in a sustainable manner.
Specifically, GrowRIVERSIDE encompasses
seven pillars:
• Assist growers and producer groups
• Create local jobs
• Develop value added products and
build local demand
• Reduce food waste
• Improve food access and health equity
• Build distribution capacity
• Ensure results
Since its inception, GrowRIVERSIDE has
become an important component of Riverside’s
community and economic development strategy.
It encompasses a cohesive plan to increase community
and economic development in food and
agricultural activities to activate an estimated
1,000 acres of vacant agriculturally-zoned land
in Riverside’s 4,800-acre Arlington Heights
Greenbelt and increase food and agricultural activities
across the city. The activities and efforts
of the initiative are carried out in collaboration
with multiple partners including the Riverside
Food Systems Alliance.
Join this year’s keynote speaker Curtis
Stone, an international figure in urban farming,
in discovering the growing popularity
of urban farming. Stone is a farmer, author,
speaker and consultant with expertise in high
value, quick-growing annual specialty crops
for direct consumer market streams. His book,
The Urban Farmer, demonstrates organic
intensive techniques with a focus on business
and growing systems to streamline labor and
production. Stone offers a new way to think
about urban farming where quality of life
and profitability coexist. Curtis’ farm, Green
Recycle Right!
Thank you for reducing, reusing and
recycling. We have done a great job
in keeping materials out of the landfill.
Now we need to ensure we put the
right materials into the BLUE Recycling
cart.
Here are the basic items to recycle:
• All clean & dry paper/cardboard
(copy, newsprint, paperboard– cereal,
tissue box, etc.)
• All empty metal containers & cans
• All plastics (1-7, water/soda bottles,
detergent bottles, Styrofoam, packaging)
• All empty glass bottles & jars
Always empty food containers. They
do not have to be washed just wiped out
of food residue.
Lowering contamination of the recycle
RAMONA
Our History, Our Legacy
Color photos by Joel Ortiz.
When Helen Hunt Jackson wrote her
story “Ramona” she intended it to be
a tale of injustice and the abuse of the
Native Americans. Little did she know it would
turn out to be one of the most enduring love
stories of the 20th Century. Biographer Ruth
Odell wrote of Jackson, “Her contact with the
Indians set off a fuse of idealism she had not
known she possessed.” And while she was an
advocate for the tribes in our local area, she also
wrote a novel that drew people to California in
droves to visit the romantic locales describe in
“Ramona”. The tale of Ramona and Alessandro
brought tourists to California as never before.
In 1913 Chester Kline, publisher and editor
of The San Jacinto Valley Register, wrote an
article suggesting that the city weave the story of
Ramona into the activities of the annual carnival.
He pointed out that the first chapters of the
book “teems with references to the San Jacinto
Valley”. Several people were interested but it was
IN THE BEGINNING: The first Ramona
and Alessandro portrayals in 1923.
members of the Hemet Chamber of Commerce
who finally got the job done and hired Garnett
Holme to write and direct the first production
of “Ramona” in 1923.
A wooden stage with a cheesecloth backdrop
and the audience sitting on blankets and rocks
was the setting for the first performance. Now
with 95 years have come many improvements
in both the setting and accommodations for the
audience; there has even been an update to the
play itself.
However, the spirit of the play has remained
the same. The injustice to the Native Americans
still rings through but over the seasons the play
has added more of the celebration of the Native
American traditions. The Red Tail Spirit Dancers
share the joy of the Elder blessing in a way
that is beautiful and authentic. Internationally
TRADITIONS: Ramona Hoop Dancers.
12
March, 2018 Inland Entertainment Review
RAMONA: Spanish dancers.
ALWAYS A CROWD: The crowd at
the parking lot for Ramona in 1925.
recognized Hoop dancer Terry Goedel amazes
with his performance.
When the novel was first published the
tourists came to California to see the setting of
the story fascinated by the portrayal of life on
a rancho, to see where Ramona and Alessandro
lived and died. Much of Jackson’s novel uses true
life occurrences; a Native American was killed
by Sam Temple and his trial was held in San Jacinto,
there were tribes in danger of losing their
lands - in fact Jackson herself hired a lawyer who
defended the Soboba tribe and helped them
keep their land.
When the valley residents chose the site of
the Ramona Pageant, they wanted the audience
to be able to appreciate the beauty and grandeur
of the natural setting. Every spring the hills
come alive with the spectacle of the Ramona
Pageant, the color of the Spanish dancers, the
surprise of the Rock Indians, the excitement
of the Cowboys as they ride the newly restored
Americana trail, and the power and majesty of
the ceremonies of the Native Americans.
Coming to see Ramona should be an all day
event. The gates to the Bowl open at 1:30pm
and it is well worth it to arrive then. Enjoy
RAMONA: Ramona and Felipe dancing.
the entertainment in the courtyard. Eat at the
Kiwanis BBQ, or for a sit down experience with
the most spectacular view in the valley eat at
the Ramona Terrace. You can visit the museum
which tells the story of “Ramona” performances
back to 1923. The gift shop has a variety of
Ramona themed items.
Seats for the play vary from the up close seats
in the lower section to the box seats at the top
of the amphitheatre that are shaded and include
waitress service. Standard pricing ranges from
$28 to $47. Take advantage of the local discount
price of only $20 for those who live in the San
Jacinto Valley and Idyllwild.
The Ramona Pageant is truly a spectacle at
its finest. That is why it is the longest running
outdoor drama in America and California’s
Official Outdoor Play. If you have never seen
“Ramona” make this year the one where you
learn the history and romance of the valley you
live in. Become a part of the legacy that makes
us so special! IER
band. Of the original five, the three original
band members still performing are Kerry Hagney
on guitar, Vince Mercurio on bass guitar,
and Gary Marzolino also on guitar.
A year later, 1966, Stan Stokes joined the
band as the keyboard player and is still in the
band. In later years, the band was joined by
Vinney Mastrosimone on drums, Bob Gongwer
on guitar, Jan Maletz on guitar and vocals and
Jennifer Maletz on vocals. The band plays rock
and roll from the 1960’s and 70’s along with a
bit of everything else.
THE FALLBROOK
AVOCADO FESTIVAL
For over thirty years Fallbrook, California,
has been known for its spectacular Avocado
Festival. Held each year in the spring, this
festival showcases the amazing avocado in a
friendly, small-town atmosphere.
Hundreds of booths line Fallbrook’s Main
Avenue, attracting thousands of people for a
day of endless fun and fabulous food. The Festival
will be held on Sunday, April 15 th from
9am to 5pm. Admission, parking and shuttles
are all free.
With avocados as the theme, the food is
one of the main focuses of the experience. An
amazing array of avocado dishes is available,
from guacamole to avocado chips to avocado
ice cream. Though avocados are the food of the
day, you will still find an incredible variety of
dining options at the festival. Among the many
food booths are offerings of barbeque, Chinese,
Greek, and Mexican, just to name a few. Those
with a sweet tooth will have trouble deciding
between all of the desserts offered at the festival,
including ice cream, funnel cakes, and cookies.
Plenty of ice-cold drinks are available at the festival
as well, including local beer and signature
margaritas at the Main Stage area.
Don’t expect to leave the Fallbrook Avocado
Festival empty-handed. Avocado-themed
souvenirs are just a fraction of what is available
to purchase. Booths that sell avocado items are
clearly marked with a “Discover Fallbrook”
pennant sign.
Unique crafts and dazzling jewelry are some
of the more popular items for sale, but the festival
also has a Farmer’s Market with a selection of
agricultural goods as well. Avocados, local citrus,
honey and plants are sold, along with a variety
of fruits and vegetables, as well as gorgeous
flowers, lush greenery, and fragrant herbs. The
Artisan Walk on Alvarado contains local artists’
creations and live demonstrations.
There’s never a dull moment at the festival,
which offers entertainment and activities
for everyone. Local music performances are
interspersed with live entertainment. Contests
abound at the Fallbrook Avocado Festival,
including Best-dressed Avocado, children’s
avocado derby racing called the “Avocado 500”,
Best Guacamole, Little Mr. and Miss Fallbrook,
and Largest Avocado.
Fallbrook is conveniently located near San
Diego, Palm Springs, and Los Angeles, so it
makes for a great day trip for those wanting to
visit. Parking is tight for this increasingly popular
event, so arrive as early as possible to secure
a good space. Free and convenient shuttles are
available so please check the website for pickup
stops and parking.
SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN
We are not sure if in California that “April
showers bring May flowers” but we do know
that April will bring Singing in the Rain to
Center Stage, April 6 th – April 29 th . One of the
most beloved musicals of all time will come to
life at Center Stage.
This show is sure to be a hit as these classic
characters come to life in the theater’s intimate
“will you make it rain?”
“The truth is we do not know yet,” said Vigiletti.
“We are looking into that, we keep joking
that we are going to give the front row squirt
bottles to spray onto the stage. We hope people
will just come out and see for themselves.”
Singing in the Rain features songs such as
“Good Morning”, “Make Em Laugh”, “You
Are My Lucky Star”, “Singing in the Rain”, and
many more.
you a delicious dinner, they trade in their aprons
for amazing costumes and take to the stage!
“This element really makes the entire event
An announcement in the local paper states the time and place when murder is to
occur in Miss Blacklock’s Victorian house. The victim is not one of the house’s several
occupants, but an unexpected and unknown visitor. What follows is a puzzle of mixed
the case. At risk to herself, Miss Marple may provide a final solution.
‘All Too Human’
New art exhibit explores the emotional work of Mark Strickland
Images courtesy of California State University San
Bernardino
What does it mean to be human? This
question is at the center of a new
exhibition at The Robert and Frances
Fullerton Museum of Art at the Cal State San
Bernardino campus, featuring the deeply emotional
and moving artworks of southern California
artist Mark Strickland. All Too Human:
The Art of Mark Strickland will highlight the
artist’s lifelong exploration of the human condition
including both the flaws in human nature
resulting in tragedies and falls and the enduring
human spirit, dignity, and compassion.
Strickland first began his lifelong study of
humanity at UCLA where he earned his B.A. in
psychology. Finding the field to be too academic,
he turned to art as a way to express himself
and find answers to the burning questions he
had about the world around him. Why is there
such a duality between the cruel, evil and tragic
things that plague our lives and the compassion,
kindness and hope that humanity is so capable
of? Much of his work focuses on investigating
what he considers the “forgotten society” – such
as the homeless, elderly, or ill – but also incorporates
grander scale concepts such as immigration,
the American dream, or the Holocaust.
Strickland’s findings are displayed through
dramatic, large scale paintings and intensely
ALL TOO HUMAN: The Art of Mark Strickland is on
display at The Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art.
realistic sculptures that reveal a message of great
hope amidst the suffering.
All Too Human: The Art of Mark Strickland is
on display now through May 19. An artist talk
will be held in conjunction with the exhibition
on Thursday, April 19, 6-8 p.m.
corner bodega is light and sweet,
the windows are always open, and
the breeze carries the rhythm of
three generations of music. It’s a
community on the brink of change,
full of hopes, dreams and pressures,
where the biggest struggles can be
deciding which traditions you take
with you, and which ones you leave
behind. See article on page 18.
