Writing skills<br />
The fine motor skills required in writing<br />
involve good hand-eye coordination.<br />
These skills can be developed through<br />
various pencil activities as follows:<br />

Child-Friendly Educational Concept<br />
Your child wants to write and has the<br />
ability to do so even at an early age. The<br />
following is a checklist of activities that<br />
are required before the child can write<br />
correctly:<br />

Scribbling<br />
Colouring<br />
Channeling<br />
Tracing<br />
Drawing continuous<br />
lines of wavy and zig<br />
zag patterns.<br />
Shading using different<br />
colours. Guide the child<br />
to colour horizontal,<br />
vertical and oblique<br />
lines or bars. The<br />
drawing of circles should<br />
be taught later. Ensure<br />
that the child colour<br />
within the boundaries<br />
given.<br />
Requires drawing a<br />
line between two<br />
boundaries.<br />
Tracing requires joining<br />
lines between adjacent<br />
points.<br />
Sitting position<br />
Ensure that the size of the chair and table<br />
is appropriate for the size of the child in<br />
order that she can sit comfortably.<br />
Book placement<br />
The book to be used should be placed<br />
at an appropriate angle to make writing<br />
easy.<br />
Holding of pencil<br />
Show the child the correct way to hold the<br />
pencil. The best way is to use the thumb,<br />
forefinger and middle finger.<br />
Tone and strength of the muscles<br />
Both the tone and strength of the muscles<br />
should be balanced when writing.<br />
Hand-eye coordination<br />
The position and movement of the hand<br />
that is used for writing should be controlled<br />
within the boundaries provided.<br />
Coordinated hand movements<br />
The movement and support provided<br />
by the shoulders, arms, wrists and fingers<br />
should be balanced.<br />
Speed of writing<br />
The speed of writing should be moderate—<br />
not too fast nor too slow while learning<br />
writing.<br />
Stability of writing<br />
The movement of the hand and fingers<br />
should be stable—not shaky.<br />
Copying<br />
Copying involves writing<br />
or drawing the given<br />
letter or pattern.<br />
Kinesthetic sensitivity<br />
Input from the joints, muscles and<br />
skin should be utilized optimally for<br />
refinement of the writing skills.
