WORK has started on a new 180 spot underground car park in Lane 

Cove and Mayor Pam Palmer (pictured) joined The Weekly Times on 

site to announce this exciting new development. This multi-million 

dollar development behind Lane Cove Plaza is being built by ADCO 

and is being called the Rosenthal Project. It will include a Coles 

Supermarket an Aldi Store and an open air performance space and 

a community park. There will be four levels of underground parking

Affairs he tried 

to introduce the Festival of 

Colours for Asians in Australia 

and we did a photo 

shoot at Anderson Park at 

Shepherds Bay. 

Well I can now assure V ic - 

tor I have experienced the 

real thing! 

Known here in Nepal as 

Holi or the Festival of Colours 

it is a public holiday 

and was celebrated here on 

Thursday. Revellers roam 

the streets throwing masses 

of coloured powder over 

everybody and squirting water 

to make it stick. 

Well not quite over everybody. 

The locals are very 

courteous and considerate of 

obvious foreigners or tourists 

and people in uniform.

that is shared by Buddhists 

and marks the arrival of 

spring. Known widely now 

as the festival of colours it 

takes place over one or two 

days and is a celebration of 

fertility and love as well as 

the triumph of good over 

evil. 

T-shirt sellers lined the 

streets with white T shirts 

with coloured Holi illustrations 

and sold like hot cakes. 

We soon realised why. 

At the end of the day the 

T shirts were anything but 

white along with the faces 

and bodies of the wearers. 

I’ll show you some examples 

next week.

in over forty years JB has

Dear Sir, 

A couple of weeks ago 

former PM Tony Abbott 

suggested that we scale 

down our immigration intake 

from the huge unsustainable 

present numbers 

we now take in. 

He was immediately 

hounded down by some 

politicians, 

lefties and do gooders. 

The voting public is not 

given the opportunity to 

voice their opinion on this 

topic. 

We are forced to accept 

whatever numbers of migrants 

the government of 

the day feels like allowing in 

every year and from whichever 

country they want to 

favour, for whatever reason. 

Last year when you add all

247,000 migrants were allowed 

in to our country. 

In order to be able to say

Repairs needed 

on Wood Street 

Dear Sir, 

The City of Ryde recently 

‘rewarded’ its residents 

with a signiant hie in 

their rates. 

In the lead-up to this, 

ouni sta ared ith a 

ratepayer-funded glossy brochures 

and PR campaign, 

argued for a “special rate 

variation” of four consecutive 

annual increases of seven 

(7) per cent starting from 

2015/16. 

Council’s argument was 

essentially that to maintain 

the existing level and quality 

of council’s services, an increase 

was necessary. 

It would have been reasonable 

for my neighbours - and 

fellow rate-payers - in Wood 

Street, Eastwood and I to assue 

the finania hit oud 

at least ensure Council would 

continue the core tasks of 

maintaining/upgrading roads, 

footpaths and open spaces 

and managing waste. 

Sadly, we appear to have 

been let down - our street is 

in a shocking state with the 

bitumen riddled with holes 

and an inconsistent, uneven 

surface and desperately in 

need of an upgrade. 

The driving and cycling 

hazard presented by pits 

and ditches throughout the 

street is exacerbated during 

wet weather and - with more 

than 15 children living in the 

street’s 29 houses - the absence 

of a footpath potentially 

puts younger members of 

the community in harm’s way. 

Given the pressing need 

for a footpath and road upgrades/repairs, 

the overwhelming 

majority of my 

neighbours were frustrated 

and disappointed to hear of 

plans to build a walking track 

in the reserve adjacent to Terry’s 

Creek, behind homes on 

one side of the Wood Street. 

We believe Council needs 

to prioritise the much-needed 

upgrade and repair work 

to Wood Street before embarking 

on any mission to essentially 

duplicate the walking 

track that already exists 

on the northern side of Terry’s 

Creek. 

Accordingly, we urge 

Council to postpone consideration 

of the walking track, 

at least until it attends to the 

more fundamental, pressing 

need to bring Wood Street 

up to the standard residents 

expect. 

Wood Street has recently 

only been attended to for 

a few pothole repairs, but 

hasnt enefited fro an 

sinifiant repairs uprades 

or maintenance for several 

years. 

While I represent residents’ 

collective frustration 

in ain this issue 

more than happy to work 

with Council to discuss, review 

and facilitate feedback 

from my Wood Street neighbours. 

I hope to be able to secure 

Council’s commitment 

to necessary works that will 

allow the residents of Wood 

Street to commute safely 

and smoothly and reinforce 

safety provisions for younger 

members of our community.

the best of my ability 

TO RECEIVE an Australia 

Day Sportsperson of the 

Year Award is an honour 

which I am very grateful for. 

The selection criteria for 

the Award focuses naturally 

on sporting success but 

also extends to making a 

positive contribution, previous 

recognition, community 

service and local sporting 

memberships. 

My biggest success so far 

has been with soccer, both 

indoor (FUTSAL) and outdoor. 

To date I have been selected 

in five ustraian teas 

(U/14, U/15, U/16 and U/21 

twice) for FUTSAL (indoor 

soccer) and have toured the 

United Kingdom and Italy. 

Representing NSW at 

eight Australian FUTSAL 

Championships and winning 

the Australian Championship 

with the NSW U/21 

Youth team in January 2017 

has been a lot of fun and 

has provided the opportunity 

to play in tournaments 

throughout Australia and 

make a lot of friends. 

This year I’ve also been 

selected to play in the NSW 

Premier League 1 representative 

competition for North 

West Sydney Koalas which 

I’m very excited about. 

Each time I play in these 

rep teams, there is the opportunity 

to catch up with 

old friends, make new ones 

and then be coached and 

play at a very high standard. 

These international and 

state competitions are the 

times when I am stretched 

and have to be at my best.

Council responds 

to alarming youth

The latest Census 

statistics reveal 

that 14.7 per cent of 

Ryde residents aged 

15 to 24 years of age 

are unemployed and 

there are not enough 

local jobs to meet 

demand. 

The council’s action 

follows a plea 

from Ryde Young 

Citizen of the Year 

Rhett Prado to urgently 

work to reduce 

this alarming 

statistic . 

“Youth unemployment 

and underemployment 

is an 

alarming issue facing 

the community 

of Ryde,” he said. 

“With housing prices 

pushing up the 

cost of living, Ryde’s 

younger citizens are 

findin it harder to 

make ends meet.” 

The City of Ryde 

has an intern program 

to support 

young workers as 

well as a partnership 

project with the 

University of Technology 

for newly

The City of Ryde 

will also investigate 

an option to extend 

the pedestrian crossing

pick up times. 

The improvements 

were endorsed by 

Council at its meeting 

last Tuesday night 

They are part of a 

city wide initiative to 

increase child safety 

across the City being 

driven by Mayor Jerome 

Laxale. 

“When Ryde Public 

School and local 

residents first raised 

these safety concerns, 

myself and 

some of my fellow 

councillors went to 

the school during pick 

up times and saw the 

real danger to children, 

first hand,” Clr 

Laxale said. 

“The safety improvements 

that will 

be made will provide 

greater safety for pedestrians 

in the area, 

including school children 

at Ryde Public 

School, as well provide 

added guidance 

to motorists driving in 

the area during peak 

periods.”

Purcell told The 

Weekly Times the 

council had to act immediately. 

“It is an accident 

waiting to happen,” 

Clr Purcell said. 

“We actually saw a 

little girl run out onto 

the road and while 

she was fortunate not 

to be struck by a car, 

it highlights why we 

need to act urgently.”

FIVE young leaders enjoyed the “experience of a lifetime” at a Rotary 

Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) program.

Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic 

FROM Winnie-the-Pooh to Paddington Bear, the attachment between a child and a teddy bear can last a lifetime. 

The Weekly Times was at Gladesville’s Our Lady Queen Of 

Peace Catholic School last week to discover that the very British 

tradition of a teddy bears’ picnic is alive and well. 

The school’s teddy bear’s picnic was part of a concert called 

‘Everything Bears’. 

It was also the ideal time to celebrate the birthday of School 

Principal Karen McGinlay who said the picnic was an enchanting 

event that ave the infants a hane to sho o their eoved 

cuddly companions to parents and teachers. 

“It was also an opportunity to entertain our local Preschools 

Trinity Early Learning Centre and Kids Cottage at Gladesville,” 

Ms McGinlay said. 

“The performance involved Kindergarten with their Teddy 

Bears’ Picnic, Year One with Going on a Bear Hunt, Year Two 

‘with a performance of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the 

Choir with their song called There Was a Bear.” 

The story of the teddy bear began in 1902 when American 

President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt went on a hunting trip to 

the Mississippi where he refused to shoot a bear cub. 

The story of “teddy’s bear” became legend but the teddy bear 

really became popular with British children when it became associated 

with the royal family’s own teddy, King Edward VII in 

1905. 

Immortal British teddy bears include Alysious of Evelyn 

Waugh’s book Brideshead Revisted, Winnie-the-Pooh, Rupert 

the Bear and Mr Tubby Bear of Enid Blyton’s Noddy books.

Robert Clark parachuted into Italy in 1944 he had his teddy bear 

“Falla” tucked into his uniform. 

The boom for British bears was in the 1930’s when manufacturers

craft of bear making. 

Merrythought still makes bears for the Royal Collection Trust 

although iconic British brands Fortnum and Mason and Burberry 

also produce hand crafted bears.

League legends rally at Cameron Sykes Sports Luncheon 

SOME of the biggest names in rugby league ventured to Drummoyne Sailing Club last Friday in support of the Cameron Sykes Sports Luncheon. 

Former NSW Origin coach and Kangaroos centre Laurie Daley was joined by ex-internationals Bob McCarthy, Steve Menzies and Greg Alexander at the luncheon which 

elped raise $10,000 for the ConnecTed Foundation at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. They are pictured with event organiser Billy McGill, promising Balmain S.G Ball 

epresentatives and Leichhardt Wanderers juniors Daniel Sykes, Ben Cody and Tane Edmed. Billy is the grandfather and Daniel, 17, the brother of Cameron Sykes who sadly

Fears latest NSW Government move may 

force Balmain Tigers into extinction

BALMAIN Tigers fan, Inner West Council Mayor, Darcy Byrne 

(pictured) says the NSW Government compulsorily acquiring 

the Balmain Leagues Club site would be a “terrible 

decision” with “disastrous consequences” for the Tigers, 

the Rozelle community and NSW taxpayers. 

Only weeks after new 

owners of the Balmain 

Leagues Club 

site unveiled a new 

$165 million redevelopment 

of the site, it 

has emerged the NSW 

Government has earmarked 

it for compulsory 

acquisition. 

It’s understood the 

site may be required 

to facilitate the daily 

removal of tonnes of 

waste - known as a 

“dive site” - during 

construction of the 

proposed Western 

Harbour Tunnel. 

NSW Roads and 

Maritime Services 

(RMS), the agency assessing 

several potential 

dive sites, is again 

creating headaches 

for the Tigers, with its 

oetions over tra 

impacts cited as the 

reason for failure of 

previous redevelopment 

proposals for the 

site. 

“It’s been with the 

state government for 

five or si ears no 

and they’ve refused 

the ast four or five 

proposals and it was 

based on objections 

from Roads and Maritime 

Services about 

the tra ipat on 

Victoria Road,” Clr Byrne 

said. 

He described the 

compulsory acquisition 

plan as “ridiculous” 

and said it would 

“make Balmain Tigers

environment in Rozelle 

and leave NSW

“This has been a 

very badly planned 

project from the start, 

but in the long history

In a statement issued 

to The Weekly 

Times, NSW Minister 

for Roads, Maritime 

and Freight, Melinda 

Pavey, criticised Clr 

Byrne, saying it was 

disappointing he “had 

chosen to politicise” 

the issue.

“As is always the 

case with these major

“We will continue to 

consult with the community 

and will have 

more to say in the near 

future. 

“It is disappointing 

Darcy Byrne has chosen 

to politicise this, 

rather than work with 

Government to deliver 

the best outcome for 

the community.” 

Clr Byrne said he 

was contacted last 

week by NSW Roads 

and Maritime Services 

to inform him the Balmain 

Leagues Club 

site, on Victoria Road, 

Rozelle, was being 

considered for compulsorily 

acquisition. 

Angered by the latest 

setback to plans 

for the site, Clr Byrne, 

a Balmain Tigers 

fan, launched a oneman 

media assault, 

with appearances on 

ABC 702 and the Alan 

Jones Breakfast Show 

on 2GB and the evening 

news. 

“A new owner of 

the site has prepared 

plans for a redevelopment 

that could see 

the Tigers return to 

Rozelle,” he said in 

statement issued by 

Inner West Council. 

“If the Government 

snatches the property 

and uses it as a “dive 

site” for tunnelling, 

this development will 

never proceed and the 

Tigers will never return 

to their spiritual home. 

“In addition to the 

four massive smoke 

stacks and enormous 

motorway interchange 

already slated for Rozelle 

as part of the 

Stage 3 of WestConne 

this oud see 

all the spoil from the 

Western Harbour Tunnel 

being removed and 

trucked out on local 

streets.” 

He said the impact 

on Rozelle Public 

School, adjacent to 

Victoria Road, would 

be “devastating and 

completely unacceptable”. 

“This Government 

seems intent on poisoning 

the local environment 

of the Rozelle 

community,” Clr Byrne 

said. 

“With a rezoning of 

12 storey residential 

development and a 

shopping mall already 

approved the tapaers 

of NSW would also 

have to foot the bill 

for massive, unprecedented 

compensation 

costs. 

“The planning of 

the estonne and 

Western Harbour Tunnel 

projects has been 

marked by ineptitude 

and secrecy at every 

turn. 

“If carried out, this 

decision would be the 

most reckless yet.” 

Meanwhile, the new 

owners of the site, Heworth 

Development, 

which last month released 

early plans to 

turn the site into 182 

units and shops in 

structures up to 12 

storeys tall, said news 

of the potential compulsory 

acquisition 

had come as a surprise. 

Adding further complication 

to the situation 

is the mid-March 

sale settlement date 

for Heworth’s acquisition, 

making it unclear 

whether the RMS 

would seek to enter 

discussions with Heworth 

or former owner 

Rozelle Village. 

“No one from RMS 

has contacted us but 

we are very to keen to 

have that discussion 

if this is what’s proposed,” 

a spokesman 

said. 

“If the government 

had their eye on the 

site it may be a lot 

easier to negotiate 

(an acquisition) for 

a vacant building as 

opposed to one that 

has a 12-storey building 

on it. It could be 

a strategic move on 

their behalf. 

“But it would have 

serious implications 

for us and I don’t think 

anyone — regardless 

of whether they support 

the redevelopment 

or not — would 

want to see the site 

becoming a construction 

ground for 10 

years.” 

But the Minister 

said use of the site 

“wouldn’t be forever”. 

“It’s not going to be 

for another decade,” 

she said. 

“Let’s put it into contet

is with Leichhardt 

Council, who opposed 

us,” Mr 

Wright told The

101st birthday celebrations for Twilight Aged Care’s Joan 

TWILIGHT Aged Care resident of over 10 years, Joan McKimm will celebrate 

her 101st birthday this Friday March 9 during a morning tea at her 

Hunters Hill Village home surrounded by family, fellow residents and staff. 

On celebrating her 

centenary last year Joan 

received a letter of congratulations 

from Her 

Majesty Queen Elizabeth 

II, Prime Minister Malcolm 

Turnball and Governor-General 

Sir Peter Cosgrove and 

was very humbled by all 

of the fuss. 

Twilight Aged Care 

CEO Lesley Jordan 

said “Joan always has 

a smile on her face and 

a kind word; she continues 

with regular art 

classes and keeps her 

mind active with puzzles 

and crosswords”. 

“We are so pleased 

to be able to celebrate 

such a significant milestone, 

and we wish 

Joan continued health 

and happiness.” 

Born into a large family 

of 11 children, Joan was 

twin to brother Arthur. 

She and her brothers 

and sisters endured two 

World Wars and famine 

(growing up she threatened 

her grandchildren 

with bread 

and dripping for dinner 

if they misbehaved!). 

She remembers the 

opening of the Sydney 

Harbour Bridge; construction 

of the Opera 

House and has witnessed 

no less than 25 

Prime Ministers hold office! 

Joan was a proud and 

loving mother to two children, 

Margaret and Colin. 

She has outlived both her 

children and all her siblings. 

She maintains that 

eating an orange a day is 

the key to her longevity. 

Joan has always had an 

active lifestyle. 

In her ‘prime’ she was 

a champion golfer. There 

can’t have 

been too many women 

on the golf course in the 

1930s, but that didn’t 

stop her. 

She also loved lawn 

bowls and received many 

accolades and championship 

trophies from her 

local Roselands Bowling 

Club. Lawn bowls was 

a significant part of her 

life.

Residents urged to meet Gladesville shopping precinct exhibit deadline 

GLADESVILLE residents have less than a fortnight to have their say on a proposed 

new, local shopping precinct. 

Last Tuesday night’s meeting 

at the Hunters Hill Town Hall

seen the Council twice 

reject applications 

from applicant GSV

traffic and other concerns 

which prompted 

the applicant to appeal 

and seek Gateway 

approval from the 

state government with 

additional height and 

floor space sought for 

a residential/commercial 

development. 

“The Gateway made 

achieving height and 

floor space conditional 

on design excellence,” 

Ms Hayes 

said. 

“A new draft regulation 

applying to the 

keysite is that open 

space is to be a minimum 

of 600 square 

metres to be adjacent 

to Cowell Street. 

“This location must 

ensure the landscaped 

open space 

is highly visable, enhances 

the existing 

pedestrian network 

and has a level connection 

to the Cowell 

Street footpath. 

“The second open 

recreation space is to 

have a minimum area 

of 2,700 square meters 

which is 25 per 

cent of the key site 

area.” 

A further issue being 

canvassed during 

the exhibition is to 

retain or relocate the 

heritage cottage at 10 

Cowell Street.

host years of the ildesley hield ennis tournament when the eent 

is staged this month. 

This prestigious event will 

celebrate the longest running 

tennis tournament in 

Australian history. 

It will be held at Pennant 

Hills Park tennis courts on 

Wednesday March 21 and 

Thursday March 22 and 

features 455 girls from 25 

schools across NSW. 

The iconic tournament 

as first paed in 

and was won by Daphne 

Akhurst, who went on to 

become one of the best 

female tennis players Australia 

has ever produced. 

The Tildsley Shield - which 

emphasises team spirit and 

not individual competition - 

is the longest running tennis 

event in Australian history 

and these ideals remain a

tournament to this day. 

To celebrate the centenary 

of the Tildesley Shield 

Tennis tournament, AHIGS 

will host an opening ceremony 

and morning tea for

100 years, with players

The Bears have recruited 

new players 

for 2018 including the 

experienced Barbara 

Waddell. 

“We are really looking 

forward to being 

part of this season, 

preparation has been 

really good and getting 

to know the girls 

and understanding 

combinations is really 

important and exciting,” 

said Barbara. 

“This whole new 

competition has allowed 

women to play 

in a more professional 

environment which is 

great”, she said. 

Local girl Isabella 

Parkman is also one 

of the Bears’ newest 

recruits. “The pathway 

looks incredible 

and the support from 

all the Bears staff has 

been fantastic,” said 

Isabella. 

“Ben’s tough but fair 

and I look forward to 

the season ahead, including 

playing with 

Barb who I have enjoyed 

playing with in 

the past”, she said. 

“This is a community 

club of which I have 

been a part of as a 

local resident and understand 

the importance 

and value of the 

Bears brand in this local 

area.”
