Protect your vision with comprehensive eye tests
THE message is simple:
get your eyes tested and
beat ‘invisible’ Glaucoma.
West Ryde optometrist
Tom Geroulas advises everyone
during World Glaucoma
Week (March 11-17)
that they can protect their
vision against this ‘silent,
blinding’ eye disease with
regular, comprehensive eye
checks.
Early detection can help
stop vision loss and blindness.
Glaucoma is a leading
cause of eyesight loss in
Australia and the number
one cause of irreversible
blindness worldwide.
About 300,000 Australians
already have Glaucoma
but because there
are generally no noticeable
symptoms, only about half
of these people know that
they have the disease.
It can occur at any age,
but generally it is more
common in people over 40.
Glaucoma is a group of
ee diseases aetin the
optic nerve, at the back of
the eye, where the nerve
fires are proressive
destroyed. The vision loss
starts in the peripheral vision,
often in one eye initially,
and can progress undetected
until the disease
is quite advanced.
In many cases this damage
is related to increased
pressure inside the eye, but
not always.
Sometimes the damage
may be caused by poor
blood circulation to the
optic nerve, or a weakness
in the nerve fires
themselves. Often there
are no warning signs or
symptoms, so in the early
stages the person is completely
unaware they have
Glaucoma until permanent
damage occurs.
auoa an aet
anyone, but some people
are at higher risk, such as
those with a history of diabetes,
blood pressure, migraine,
sleep apnoea and
even short sightedness
(myopia).
People with direct relatives
who have glaucoma
are up to 10 times more
likely to also develop it
themselves.
Eye injuries and past or
present use of cortisone
medications (steroids) may
also increase the risk of
Glaucoma.
Comprehensive eye examinations
are the best
way to protect against
Glaucoma.
Testing for Glaucoma
usually includes thorough
examination of the optic
nerves by ophthalmoscopy,
an eye pressure check
(tonometry), and a visual
fied assessent if disease
is suspected. Early detection
is vital.
There is no cure for Glaucoma,
and the vision loss
ible, but the earlier it is
detected, further damage
is prevented and the more
control eye pressure, but
sometimes surgery is also
