Fresh Sawn Oak
Oak is a common and iconic symbol of strength
and endurance and has been an integral element
of architectural history for many centuries. Its
inherent sturdiness and durability make it an
ideal material for use in construction, while its
appealing grain markings and beautiful colour
make it an aesthetically desirable finished
product.
Most of the oak used in Britain today comes
from Europe - mainly France where it is farmed
as a commercial crop and where its planting,
growth and harvesting are carefully and reliably
managed. The whole operation is sustainable
and ecologically sound and we can take comfort
in knowing that oak will be enjoyed as a valuable
raw material for many years to come.
Our oak framed structures are built using the
same traditional ‘post-and-beam’ construction
methods used by our ancestors. Each individual
joint is precisely cut to ensure a snug fit and is
securely held in place with oak pegs.
We also let you choose precisely how involved
you wish to be in the construction of your
building. From the supply of the basic frame and
assembly instructions right through to an allinclusive
build, the management of your project
can be very flexible and determined during initial
discussions.
Solid Oak Garages
Our oak framed garages combine
traditional building methods with the
strength and durability of Britain’s
favourite wood. We at Cedar Nursery
take pride in being able to offer a fully
bespoke service that can meet your
exact requirements.
Flexibility is key and you can choose from
a variety of components to make up your
ideal garage, workshop or carport. We
can supply the oak frame as well as many
different styles of roof to match your
individual needs.
We only use Green Oak in all our
construction, including frames, tie beams,
braces, soleplates, studwork, cladding
and rafters. All joints are precisely cut
and use the traditional method of draw
pegging to hold them in place. Our
standard range all have ridge heights
under 4 metres and since our one and
two bay garages are both under 30m
squared, this usually negates the need for
planning permission.
Our oak framed garages can be fully
assembled by us, including foundation
and roofing installation, or, delivered in
kit form with the necessary instructions
and wooden jointing pegs.
The epitome of outdoor living, a pergola provides
the perfect complement for discerning homeowners
who yearn to maximise the enjoyment of their home
and garden.
We provide ready-to-assemble bespoke solid oak
pergola frames and the solid, high quality oak used
in their construction gives our pergolas strength,
durability and beauty. Supplied untreated, you are
oak that you like, or you can leave the pergola
untreated for the oak to turn the classic weathered
silver look over a number of years.
Beautiful aesthetics and a robust oak frame design
lets them blend effortlessly with their surroundings
and they can be installed as a stunning patio cover
to facilitate all year round enjoyment of an outdoor
space.
Pergola Roofs
Originally defined as an open structure with an open roof, the
concept of a pergola has been extended to include semienclosures
and roofing. While many people like to grow climbing
and trailing plants up and over their pergolas to give natural
shade underneath, there are also solid roof covering options. If
you're building a pergola for largely aesthetic reasons, your
choice will be a relatively easy one: choose the roofing material
(or lack of roofing material) that appeals to you and give your
pergola the look you want. Do not overlook practical
considerations, though. Before you decide, ask yourself a few
questions:
• Do you want a fair weather pergola only?
• Do you want a living space, a barbecue area or a quiet
nook in your garden for relaxation or meditation?
• Do you want a pergola designed primarily as an accent
to your garden?
• Do you want to house a hot tub in your pergola?
You may have other reasons for wanting a pergola, but whatever
they are, your choice of roofing is important. Choose battens or
roofing designed for climbing plants only if you're sure your
pergola is for fair weather use only or as a garden accent. For
year around use, you will need to choose a solid roof covering
(you will need to have a pitched or gabled pergola for water
runoff). In this case we can provide roof cladding in the form of
cedar shingles, glass, or a choice of tiles. Covering your pergola
in this way is very useful as it provides shelter from inclement
weather where you might have a seating / dining area or an
outdoor kitchen (prices and quotes are available on request).
Frequently asked questions
• What is meant by ‘green’ oak? The term green oak refers to
timber that has been recently felled and unseasoned (dried). This
means that the wood dries and settles naturally. As it does so the
natural shrinkage results in a tightening of the joints and gradual
strengthening of the overall structure.
• Is your wood FSC Compliant? We source our oak from
responsibly managed forests that comply with PEFC and FSC
regulations.
• What are the black marks I have seen on your buildings? Oak
contains natural tannins that protect it from insect and fungal
attack. The black marks you see are a result of the tannins that
have reacted with the steel from the sawmill being leached from
the timber. This is a natural characteristic that fades over time
although it can be treated for a ‘cleaner’ look.
• What guarantee do you offer? Our oak structures are
guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years however you can expect
them to remain standing for the next hundred years or so due to
their extraordinary durability!
• Will we need planning permission and building regulations?
You may be able to build without planning permission under
what is called “Permitted Development” but, as with all building
work, the owner of the property (or land) in question is ultimately
responsible for complying with the relevant planning rules and
building regulations (regardless of the need to apply for planning
permission and/or building regulations approval or not). The
general advice is to always discuss your proposals with the
relevant Local Planning Authority and Building Control Service
prior to works commencing.
