Quick Bites
Ringing in Pi Day the right way
Staff Report
March 14 is more than
the eve of the Ides of
March, the anniversary of
Julius Caesar’s untimely
demise. It’s 3/14 ... 3.14 ...
Pi Day.
Whether you think of Pi
as a mathematical constant
or the 1998 film by Darren
Aronofsky, it’s worthy of
celebration. I mean, who
really needs an excuse to
indulge in a slice of pie?
To celebrate, editors
from 22nd Century Media
made like Special Agent
Dale Cooper and got down
with some slices of pie.
Oh My Key lime pie —
MLG Chicago, Lake Forest
Indulging in dessert is
always a good idea, especially
when dining at MLG
Chicago in Lake Forest.
New to the menu at
MLG Chicago, is the Oh
My Key lime pie ($11),
which is easily split between
two people. The
dessert is almost too pretty
to touch, but once you dive
in, you can’t stop.
This Key lime pie stands
out because it is made
fresh everyday and is inspired
by MLG Chicago’s
partners at the Key West
Key Lime Pie Co.
The Oh My Key lime pie
is a balance of sweet and
tart with fresh Key limes,
graham cracker crust, lime
zest and Chantilly whipped
cream topped with raspberries
and blueberries.
Executive Chef Pete
Sbachula said they receive
fresh limes from Key West
daily, which makes their
Key lime pie unique.
MLG Chicago, 181 E.
Laurel Ave., is open 11:30
a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-
Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-
Hot toffee-apple and very
berry dessert pizza —
Marcello’s, Northbrook
Few things can put the
finishing touch on a meal
quite like the satisfying
taste of dessert.
Although the options
are vast, pie — a long-disputed
king of the dessert
world — remains atop the
list for most diners. And
with countless years of
experience under its belt,
few restaurants serve up
MLG Chicago’s Oh My Key lime pie ($11) includes fresh Key limes, graham cracker
crust, lime zest, Chantilly whipped cream and is topped with raspberries and
blueberries. ALYSSA GROH/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
pie quite like Northbrook’s
Marcello’s.
The Northbrook staple
boasts classic, fan-favorite
dishes throughout its
menu, but when it comes
to dessert, Marcello’s hot
toffee-apple and very berry
dessert pizza are both
blue ribbon worthy.
“Between both, I think
the apple one might be
slightly more popular,
but guests love our berry
one because of its great
colors,” said Larry Goodman,
general manager at
Marcello’s. “It comes out
of the oven hot and people
just crave it.”
According to Goodman,
both dishes have been on
the menu for more than 20
years and are popular selections
regardless of the
occasion.
After trying both, it’s
clear why both these dishes
are beloved by guests.
Both dishes are fresh tasting,
just the right amount
of sweet, and the crust
nicely finishes off both.
This writer highly recommends
both.
Both dishes retail for
$6.95. Marcello’s is open
11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-
Thursday, 11 a.m.-10:30
p.m. Friday, 4-10:30 p.m.
on Saturday and 4-9:30
p.m. Sunday.
is located at 1911 Cherry
Mini ultimate chocolate pie
— Foodstuffs, Glencoe
You can never just have
one small slice of pie. But,
if you treat yourself to a
mini-pie version, that’s not
a problem, right?
At Foodstuffs in downtown
Glencoe, the bakery
offers a variety of different
desserts on a weekly basis.
On the rotating menu,
the mini ultimate chocolate
pie frequently makes
a return at 338 Park Ave.,
Glencoe.
The pie, and all the other
pasties for that matter, are
made by a pastry chef at
the Foodstuffs Evanston
location. The pastries are
trucked over on a daily basis
to the Glencoe location.
According to Foodstuffs
manager Andreea Nemes,
pies, especially the chocolate
selection, are “really
popular.”
“Anything mini like
these will go fast,” Nemes
added.
The mini ultimate
chocolate pie comes in a
small tin with large shaved
chocolate pieces on top.
The edges are graced with
heavy whipped cream and
the crust, a substance like
crushed Oreos, provides a
nice crunch and taste to the
overall flavor.
The pie’s inside, however,
is where it’s at — the
chocolatey, gooey, puddling-like
filling that keeps
you coming back for more.
The mini pie runs for
$6.99, which is less than
a standard large pie, and it
comes with the advantage
of being guilt-free because
of its size.
Foodstuff’s has locations
in Glencoe, Glenview,
Lake Forest and Evanston.
The Glencoe location is
open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Monday-Saturday and 10
a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
