Aside from offering advertising solutions on multiple platforms, to serve local businesses, 22nd Century Media has put on local events and expos — such as Lady: A Women’s Expo, Active Aging and 22CM Boost, the newest division of 22nd Century Media, offers a variety of writing solutions to local businesses. THE WILMETTE BEACON Car crashes through front window of Wilmette Panera A car crashed through the front window of Panera Bread on March 6 in Wilmette. The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Elaine Joyce, 83, of Wilmette. According to officials, a black Cadillac sedan, driven by Joyce, crashed through the window at approximately 6 p.m. during a dinner rush at the restaurant. The car landed near the counter. The Wilmette Police and Fire departments, along with the Winnetka Fire Department, responded to the scene. According to the Wilmette Police, Joyce, who was uninjured, was still in the vehicle when they arrived. A 67-year-old female customer was found sitting on the floor in front of the vehicle’s bumper. It was determined that she was near the counter when she was struck by the vehicle and glass from the shattered window. A 38-year-old female customer was also near the counter and fell trying to move away after the glass window shattered inward. Reporting by Eric De- Grechie, Managing Editor. THE NORTHBROOK TOWER Former trustee calls for Northbrook assault weapons ban Michael Scolaro, a former three-term Village Board trustee who retired from the board last year, said he only had a couple of regrets stemming from his time as a trustee. One of them, he said, was not a vote he made, but one that was not put up for a vote at all. “I listened to people come up and speak to us about an assault weapons ban,” he said. “I thought ‘there’s 300 million guns in the country right now, what is a piece of paper going to do? A piece of paper isn’t going to stop a bullet, it’s not going to make anybody give back a gun, it’s merely a feel-good thing for the do-gooders,’ was my thought.” Village President Sandy Frum said, however, the decision is not in the Village’s hands anymore. THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK Highland Park man sentenced to 54 years in 2013 murder One of the three men charged in the 2013 murder of Highwood resident Colin Nutter was sentenced March 2. Philip Vatamaniuc, 22, of Highland Park, was sentenced to 54 years in prison, his attorney LaTonya Burton said. Nutter was found dead of a gunshot wound near the Edens Expressway in Wilmette, close to the Skokie border. According to court documents, Vatamaniuc and two others had planned to rob Nutter after buying marijuana from him. Burton said she and her law partner, Renea Amen, plan to appeal Vatamaniuc’s sentence. In court documents, Vatamaniuc claims he only helped hide the body, but did not take part in planning the murder or robbery. Burton said she and Amen believe that Vatamaniuc’s sentence is unfair because of non-credible witnesses and the fact that Vatamaniuc was not the shooter. She said she hopes the appeal attorney will write an appeal reflective of that. According court records, Benjamin Schenk, of Highwood, and Michael Coffee, of Highland Park, were also involved in the slaying of Nutter. Schenk has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing, while Coffee is awaiting trial. Burton said, as part of Schenk’s plea deal, he offered up information on Vatamaniuc and Coffee. She also said that some of the witnesses called were either under the influence of mind-altering substances or made statements under duress. Reporting by Xavier Ward, Contributing Editor. This year, the course was reformatted to expand over four days and last 10 hours in total. The class began on March 6 with the following sessions on March 8, March 13 and March 15. The self defense class covers areas such as personal safety and threat awareness concepts, and participants are taught realistic self-defense techniques by Lake Forest Police defensive tactics instructors. The class begins in a classroom setting where Davis explains the awareness aspect to self defense. Self defense begins with awareness, being aware of your surroundings at all times, and being able to identify a dangerous situation and how to handle the situation to keep yourself safe. “We teach awareness and avoidance and how to recognize a bad situation and how to avoid it. If you can’t avoid a dangerous situation we teach you how to de-escalate the dangerous situation,” Davis said. Part of learning how to react in a harmful environment is learning how to protect yourself physically. The participants and instructors engage in handson self defense techniques that teach women how to react and protect themselves in a stressful and dangerous situation. Through a series of realistic scenarios women are taught a variety of ways to defend themselves against an attacker. “We teach basic kicks, punches, elbow and knee strikes,” David said. “Additionally, basic grappling skills are taught with weapon defense (knife and gun), and gross motor techniques that can be performed under stress.“ Davis emphasized the skills are taught for survival. “We teach these physical skills to get away from a situation,” Davis said. “We are not teaching you how to fight, but how to survive in a dangerous situation.”

The contractor has fenced off a staging area to the south of the front entrance to begin tuckpointing and roofing work. The lobby will be closed in May for New Friends the interior work. The project includes a restroom remodel, interior and exterior painting and refinishing of woodwork, interior and exterior lighting, tuckpointing, and roofing. The ATM will remain open for the whole project and train service will continue on the normal schedule. The project will be completed by the end of June.
