opener Tuesday, March
6 at Highland Park High
School. Andrew Gherlein
added two to LFHS’ final
score. The game went into
double overtime where
Harmon Raft’s goal was
the eventual decision maker.
Mary Doheny is a senior
goalkeeper, and four-year
starter, at Lake Forest
High School for the girls
lacrosse team.
How did you get
started playing
lacrosse?
I moved from Libertyville
to Lake Forest in
fifth grade and all my
friends were playing lacrosse.
It was kind of a
new sport and I had never
heard of it. I just started to
join the team in sixth grade
in (Illinois Girls Lacrosse
Association) and at the
time I did not like running.
When no one else volunteered
to be the goalie, I
decided I would be the
goalie.
What do you like
about the sport?
I always played soccer
when I was younger but lacrosse
was just different. It
was a very different team
and it was a lot of fun to
travel around. I just fell in
love with it.
What is the most
challenging part of the
sport?
I think, especially in my
position, keeping my head
in the game and not getting
distraught or distracted if I
let in a goal. I just have to
move forward and focus
on my next shot.
What is a goal you
have for this season?
We want to make it further
in the playoffs. As a
team, we just want to enjoy
our last year together,
us five seniors have played
together so long. A lot of
us did travel (lacrosse) together
in middle school.
With this being the end of
our years together it’s like
a happy sad.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would
you go?
Italy. Italy is on my
bucket list. I think I would
want to go to Venice or
Florence or anywhere really.
The Amalfi coast
would probably be really
nice too.
Who is your favorite
professional athlete?
It was Corey Crawford
on the Chicago Blackhawks
but he isn’t playing
right now. But, it’s still
probably Corey Crawford
just because he’s a goalie.
We share some similarities
in that.
If you could have
dinner with anyone
living or dead, who
would it be?
The entire Eagles band.
I love the Eagles. I really
like music and I think it
would be interesting to
hear about how they all
came to be but with Glenn
Frey.

Do you play any
other sports besides
lacrosse?
I play tennis and I’m
also a huge runner.
What is something you
want to accomplish off
your bucket list?
I want to scuba dive in
Australia off the Great
Barrier Reef.
What is something
people don’t know
about you?
My lacrosse team knows
this, but I really like to
wear Crocs. I wear them
to all our practices and I
always wear them to lacrosse.
I have a large collection.

to get better,” he said. “We
don’t expect to win all of
those games but we think
that the competition will
make us better for the Illinois
playoffs.”
The Scouts will also be
part of a televised roundrobin
tournament on May 5
as a result of being a member
team of the MLL.
Locally, there are teams
that Thiergart and the
Scouts will have their eye
on and teams that have
their eye on them.

to Glenbrook North, which
is my alma mater, so that’s
always a big game,” Thiergart
said. “New Trier and
Loyola are always teams
we would love to beat,
and St. Viator, we knocked
them out of the playoffs last
year, I’m sure that they’ll
be gunning for us.”
