Waimate – a thriving
rural toWn
Nestled at the foot of the Hunter Hills,
8km off State Highway 1, Waimate is
a thriving rural town providing the
visitor with many reasons to stop and
explore.
Wide spacious streets, a valued
collection of Edwardian buildings,
historic churches, parks and beautiful
gardens, create a relaxed, friendly
environment for both residents and
visitors who enjoy browsing Waimate’s
specialist shops.
The town is the heart of a district
blessed with rivers and lakes that offer
an extensive range of outdoor pursuits
such as world renowned salmon and
trout fishing, deer hunting, boating,
yachting, bird watching and family
camping on the lake shores.
Outstanding forest, mountain and
alpine tracks encourage walking and
mountain biking. The newly opened
White Horse Big Easy Mountain Bike
Trail offers rides to suit all abilities. The
Studholme Bush Walkway comprises
five individual walks of 20 minutes or
a combination of all five tracks over 3
hours.
Waimate has not forgotten its
heritage and those people and animals
that helped mould it. The White Horse
Monument is a tribute to Clydesdale
horses and the stands majestically on
the Hunters Hills, visible for miles and
accessed via the Waimate walkway or
by car.
The Waimate district is one of the
few places in NZ where wallabies have
taken up residence. Introduced from
Australia, you can see them in wildlife
parks, or if hunting is your sport, there
is ample opportunity for this too.
Waimate is also famous for its
strawberries, which have been grown
in the region since the late 1880’s. At
any of the strawberry fields, growers
will sell you a punnet of their finest
berries, real berry fruit ice cream or
pick your own straight from the field.
You can’t get much fresher than that!
Tourism contributes to Waimate’s
economy with many independent
travellers visiting the area to enjoy its
attractions and annual events, such as
The March Hare Motor Cycle Rally and
Strawberry Fare to be held this year
on Saturday 8th December.
Waimate also offers an alternative
route to Queenstown via the
spectacular scenery of the Waitaki
Lakes. For further information on
Waimate, including maps, brochures
etc call into the Waimate Information
Centre or view www.waimate.org.nz
revamped Quality and FasHion style in
oamaru
For more than 10 years Zelie Allan has delighted customers
at her Revamp clothing store in Oamaru. Specialising in
clean, up to date, quality labels, she sells pre-owned fashion
clothing and accessories that are sourced from all over the
South Island.
Zelie began Revamp when she realised many women
struggled to find clothing that would fit nicely. Customers
now come from as far away as Nelson and Invercargill and
enjoy “the buzz of a bargain” and quality clothes they can
afford. She sources clothes in a range of sizes and styles
to suit all ages from children to grandmothers, as well as a
small selection of men’s clothes too.
A year ago Zelie opened her Style store right across the
road from Revamp. Here, customers will find new fashion
clothing and the only place in the South Island where
some of Zelie’s distinctive Australian brands are available.
Revamp Clothing
“I began Style in the back room of Revamp to test the
market” says Zelie. “With online interest it all grew from
there until I needed new premises and the business has
gone from strength to strength.”
Zelie and her staff find it rewarding to see people happy
with what they purchase and enjoy the personal help that
they provide. Focusing on women’s wear, most items at
Style are available up to size 16, with some ranges up to
22-24.
Revamp is open at 409 Thames Highway from 10.30-4.30
Stargazing and Observatory Tours at
the University of Canterbury Mt John
Observatory and Cowan’s Observatory
in Lake Tekapo. Providing guests
the only tour option where horizon
to horizon views of the spectacular
night skies across the vast Mackenzie
Basin can be seen from mountaintop
locations.
The township of Tekapo sits 750m
above sea level and Mt John 1035m.
Situated between two mountain
ranges, the Southern Alps and the
Two Thumb Range, the Mackenzie
Basin is protected from most weather
systems. The higher altitude of Mt
John gives rise to cooler mountain
air making it New Zealand’s leading
location for a Research Observatory.
The small resident population
contribute to minimizing the impact
of light pollution. The Mackenzie
District Council’s lighting ordnance’s
introduced in the 1980’s, enforces all
lights to be shaded preventing light
one of the South Island’s most scenic
Well sited for both mountain views
a piece oF paradise
Just 50m from the beach, Moeraki
Village Holiday Park enjoys an idyllic
setting close to the famous Moeraki
Boulders and colonies of penguins
and seals. Hosts Kristina and Robbie
Mitchell welcome visitors from all
over the world to their “piece of
paradise” and provide a variety
of accommodation to cater for all
budgets.
As well as 6 self contained motels,
3 self contained tourist flats, 3 cabins
and 30 tent/caravan or motor home
sites, visitors will also appreciate
modern well equipped communal
kitchen and dining facilities, clean
shower blocks and guest laundry, a
TV lounge with Freeview TV, internet
and wireless access, barbeques and
children’s play equipment.
Located on a curve of faultless beach,
there’s ample opportunity for fishing
and boating, deep sea charter fishing,
while wonderful walks take you to
Moeraki’s unique rock formations and
wildlife including New Zealand’s rare
Hoiho or yellow-eyed penguin.
The area is also historically significant
and once boasted a Maori village and
pa in addition to the pretty Kotahitanga
Church and a lighthouse in continuous
use since its establishment in 1878.
Visitors to Moeraki can enjoy
restaurant meals at the Moeraki Tavern
or the award winning world class
services and amenities of Oamaru just
Some 60 million years ago, the
concretions we know as the Moeraki
Boulders started forming on the ocean
floor. Centuries of coastline erosion
have revealed a spectacular view of
these curiously large spherical rocks.
Maori legend refers to the Moeraki
Boulders as the wreckage from a
large Waka (sailing canoe) and are
said to represent the fishing nets and
calabashes that were washed ashore
and then turned into stone. The larger
Moeraki Boulders are as big as 3
metres in diameter and weigh several
tons whilst the smaller boulders can
resemble an over inflated football.
With so much natural interest on
Koekohe Beach, (located between
Moeraki Village and Hampden), the
Moeraki Boulders Café, Bar and Gift
shop was built. With a pleasant walk
through regenerating native bush,
visitors can rest inside with a drink
or have a meal on the sunny deck
enjoying the magic coastal vista.
The Moeraki Boulders Cafe, Bar &
Gift Shop is a 7 day a week family run
business, operated by Scott and Sarah
Johnston. The Cafe & Bar and Gift
Shop are perched on top of the hill
directly above the famous landmark
and are shaped to look like large
boulders.
The Cafe has seating capacity for 120
people inside and 40 outside on the
large deck overlooking the Boulders.
Large bi-folding doors open up onto
the deck which is popular on a warm
sunny day, while the café’s large open
fire provides cosy warmth on a cold
winters day. The facility is designed
to cater for large groups as well as
individuals and couples looking for a
bite to eat.
The Gift Shop located adjacent to
the Cafe has a wide variety of quality
stock for both locals and tourists alike,
including the beautiful Evolve range
of jewellery, clothing, giftware and
souvenirs.
and Hospitality
The Moeraki Tavern has plenty to
boast about; it’s the only pub in the
village, it’s under new ownership, it
prides itself on a warm welcome and
good food and it provides spectacular
harbour views for free!
In October 2017 Craig Brett, Abbie
Murrell and Stew and Jackie Beach
forsook Nelson for a new lifestyle as
the new owners and business partners
of the tavern in Moeraki Village. Their
vision was to give visitors a hospitality
experience they would remember,
whether they lived locally or were
visitors to the region.
The light, bright, premises is further
enhanced by outdoor tables for
savouring both the menu and the
harbourside venue. Offering a range
of beverages, main meals, bar snacks
and takeaways, customers are assured
of prompt, friendly service, quality
food and generous quantities. There
is a selection of local beers and
regional wines as well as great coffee,
while menu highlights include seafood
chowder, blue cod and succulent
ribeye steak. A children’s menu is also
available and large groups can be
catered for, although booking ahead
is advisable.
Moeraki Tavern is open daily from
11am until late. A warm welcome awaits
all customers whether it’s a stop
The school holidays are a chance to
keep educating the kids and hitting
the road and bringing the learning
down south adds a level of adventure.
Sometimes the kids don’t really know
what they want to do in the holidays,
whether it’s read, start a craft project
or simply look at cool stuff.
Toitū Otago Settlers Museum is the
perfect place for these sorts of days
as children – and adults – can do any
or all of these things in the beautifully
restored and expanded buildings.
The gallery spaces at Toitū have
display cases filled with intriguing
objects and there are plenty of
opportunities to get hands on as well,
whether it is trying on a turn of the
century dress, climbing on the Roslyn
tram or the Tiger Tea bus, playing
classic 1980s Atari game Laser Hawk
or chilling out and listening to some
music. The interactive displays also
include soundscapes and digital
media that will engage curious minds.
The beautiful Art Deco bus station
area has a children’s area with craft
materials and dress ups – as well as
comfortable seats for the adults’
tired legs. The archives and research
centre has a wealth of information for
budding genealogists or historians
and friendly staff who can help them
get started.
The Museum has helpfully placed
restrooms and a café in the sunny
and expansive Josephine Foyer with a
variety of snacks and drinks on offer
to replenish energy before heading
off to explore the next corner of the
museum. A shop is also on hand selling
toys, games and novelties as well as
custom designed jewellery, china and
gifts.
Toitū Otago Settlers Museum is a fun
place to spend an hour or a day with
something new always waiting to be
discovered.
AUTHENTIC SCHOLAR’S GARDEN
IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE
• Learn about the Dunedin Chinese
Settlers in our alleyway exhibition.
Explore Dunedin’s
stories at one of
New Zealand’s most
innovative museums
Located in the heart of Dunedin is
the only traditional Chinese Scholar’s
Garden in the southern hemisphere.
The garden takes visitors on a
journey through the city’s cultural
history, heritage and tradition – giving
recognition to the Chinese people who
first came to Otago during the 1860s
gold rush and stayed to establish
some of Dunedin’s businesses.
As a Garden of National Significance,
it has a distinct character being
designed and built using authentic
Chinese materials and crafted by a
team of artisans from Dunedin’s sister
city of Shanghai. The Garden features
hand-made wooden buildings, tiles,
bricks, lattice-work and hand-finished
granite paving stones.
In a scholar’s garden, galleries
connect to pavilions with the central
building, usually a library or study
and in Dunedin’s case the Tea House,
dividing the garden into individual
scenes or landscapes. Plants, trees, and
rocks are all carefully composed into
small perfect landscapes mimicking
a traditional Chinese landscape
painting.
It is a great place to bring children
in the school holidays with plenty of
activities to keep them entertained
including garden hunts, costumes and
arts and crafts. Parents can take some
time out in the Tea House and enjoy
traditional Chinese tea and treats.
• Savour traditional tea and dumplings
A ‘must visit’ for lovers of arts and culture; Olveston
offers a unique glimpse into the extraordinary lives of one
of Dunedin prominent Edwardian families.
Olveston was the home of businessman, collector and
philanthropist David Theomin. Designed by the English
architect, Sir Ernest George, Olveston was built with
every modern convenience including central heating, a
gas generator for electricity, a shower in each bathroom
and heated towel rails, an internal telephone system
and service lift. The house was also lavishly furnished
with exotic artefacts, prized artworks, antiques, carpets,
ceramics, statues and weaponry purchased from around
the world.
with the challenge of man made engineering will leave you
amazed, but somehow the railway blends into the natural
environment perfectly. It is a wonderful example of the
sheer determination of early railway pioneers.
The train will stop or slow down at various scenic points
along the way for photos where you can disembark and
stretch your legs and enjoy the best of beauty, peace
and quiet that nature has to offer. Stand on the open air
platforms while the train moves or enjoy a quiet drink and
food while our train manager tells the story of the nature
and history of the area in an entertaining and informative
live commentary.
This is an all weather trip that will suit individuals, families
or groups alike! Daily departures year round.
olveston Historic
Home
Olveston was inherited by the Theomin’s daughter
Dorothy in 1933. Continuing the family tradition of
philanthropy, Dorothy supported many of the artistic and
community causes championed by her parents including
Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the Plunket Society.
Following Dorothy’s death in 1966, it was discovered
that Olveston, complete with the original contents, was
gifted to the people of Dunedin. Guided tours reveal
the extraordinary lives of the Theomin family and allow
a glimpse of Dunedin’s rich business, artistic and social
history from the mid-1800s until the 1960s.
Set within a 1-acre ‘Garden of National Significance’, at 42
Royal Terrace, Olveston is within walking distance from the
Octagon. Olveston is a time capsule, as little has changed
inside the house since it was occupied as a family home.
A feast for the eyes, a tour of Olveston is for those who
appreciate (or aspire to) the finer things in life.
Visiting Olveston is by guided tour only. Tours commence
daily at 9.30am, 10.45am, 12noon, 1.30pm, 2.45pm and
4pm. For details of other activities and events held at the
cruising on thE otago harbour
You may not be able to soar like an albatross over Taiaroa
Head, but a trip with Dunedin’s Monarch Cruises will get
you close to the real thing! Enjoy the best that the Otago
Peninsula and coast have to offer with this multi award
winning tourism company.
Not only will you see the mighty Northern Royal Albatross
and New Zealand fur seal colonies, but experienced guides
will identify other species nesting and feeding there –
wading birds, other albatrosses, petrels, maybe even
penguins, sea-lions and dolphins.
Join a short wildlife cruise if you are already out on the
peninsula, or relax and take one of Monarch’s popular
longer tour options from the city. These can include visits
to the Albatross Centre, Larnach Castle and Penguin Place.
a World class stately Home
Larnach Castle is undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s
finest historic homes. Not only is it a testament to the
wealth of its builder, but to the current owners who have
restored and revitalised it for the benefit of visitors from
all over the world.
William Larnach was a merchant, Baron and politician
when he built the castle in 1871 for his wife Eliza. The
finest materials were imported to befit the
opulent grandeur he envisaged; Italian
marble, Venetian glass and tiles from
England. The 3000 square foot ballroom
is still used for weddings and balls and the
castle boasts the only Georgian hanging
staircase in the Southern Hemisphere.
Part of the romance and intrigue of the
castle today is the tragic history of its
owner. Larnach shot himself after a scandal
involving his wife and the building was
subsequently used as a mental hospital and later to
billet troops.
Years of neglect finally came to an end when the
Barker family purchased it in 1967 and painstakingly
restored and developed it to its present condition. As
well as its magnificent Victorian interior, resplendent
with architectural details, elaborate fittings and antique
furniture, 35 acres of garden have been re-developed by
Margaret Barker into “Garden of International Significance”
status. In 2017 the castle celebrated 50 years of dedicated
You can also take a new Sundowner Package from mid
Complimentary transfers and refreshments are included
for half day and full day options, while interactive
commentaries, complimentary jackets and binoculars are
also provided.
ownership by the Barker family.
The native plant trail is a beautifully illustrated walk
through the castle grounds among rare and iconic native
plants in rock gardens, a south seas garden and a rain
forest. Children also enjoy a special guide to Larnach
Castle. The illustrated brochure contains interesting
facts about castles, Victorian times, the
family’s history and a children’s tour of the
grounds.
Larnach Castle offers guests three
different styles of accommodation; Camp
Estate - country house accommodation
positioned 500 metres from the front gate
of the Castle, offering luxurious decor and
total privacy; Larnach Lodge, features
colonial style in the grounds of the castle
and has 12 bedrooms with private facilities
for guests; while Castle Stable Stay is the
perfect choice for budget conscience travellers.
All house guests may dine in the elegantly restored
castle dining room and enjoy the unparalled atmosphere
of New Zealand’s only genuine castle. Superbly located
on the Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle captures the
romance and history of the past. Also on the property
is a café, petanque pit and a gift shop for castle themed
mementoes to take home.
After 4 years of planning and 5
months of construction, Tūhura Otago
Community Trust Science Centre is
complete.
The $2.5 million redevelopment of
Otago Museum’s former Discovery
World Tropical Forest was supported
with $500,000 in funding from the
Otago Community Trust. Now home
to over 45 new hands-on science
interactives and a refreshed Tropical
Forest butterfly house, Tūhura will also
encompass the digitally interactive
Beautiful Science Gallery and
Perpetual Guardian Planetarium, both
of which were completed in December
2015 during stage one of the project.
An icon of the Tūhura Otago
Community Trust Science Centre is
a 7.5 metre-high spiral slide inspired
by the DNA double helix, funded
by a $100,000 grant from The Lion
Foundation. Other key interactives
include ‘The Void’ infinity room
experience, a Virtual Body Table
sponsored by the Marjorie Barclay
Trust, a Mood Ball and a Tornado.
Approximately two-thirds of the new
interactive exhibits were designed
and manufactured in Germany, by
world-renowned Hüttinger Interactive
Exhibitions.
The refurbished Tropical Forest
butterfly environment will not only
house over 1,000 exotic butterflies,
but also a variety of other species
including tarantulas, terrapins and
birds. The Tropical Forest’s newest
residents include Eurycnema goliath,
more commonly known as the Goliath
Stick Insect. Growing up to 25cm in
length and laying up to 1,000 eggs
within a 12 month period, visitors will
be able to get up close and personal
with these gentle giants on weekends
and throughout the school holidays.
The introduction of a new annual
pass which includes both the Science
Centre and the Tropical Forest is set
to ensure the locals can visit these
attractions as frequently as they
desire, with the annual price set at
$40 for a child and $60 for an adult.
Dr Jane Goodall said of Orokonui, "My
time there (Orokonui Ecosanctuary)
was especially important me because
it gave me some idea of how New
Zealands native bush and wildlife used
to look like and how it used to sound
like. And its a wonderful example of
Nature's resilience once dedicated
people give her a chance."
If you want to experience cultural
history as well as the dramatic
Dunedin City's hinterland through the
dramatic Taieri Gorge stopping off
for a special festival guided walk to
Sutton Salt Lake before carrying on
Wild Dunedin has invited the arts
community to join in the celebrations
and an hour's walking tour around
some of the international and local
street artworks in the centre of the
city will celebrate both art and nature
with stories of the animals depicted in
the street art.
The festival is annual event that is
anchored to April 22nd when we join
other countries around the world to
celebrate Earth Day. On Earth Day
this year we have Fortune Theatre
presenting a rehearsed play reading
of "2071: the world we will leave
our grandchildren". Chris Rapley's
compelling and timely look at climate
change was written with leading
British playwright Duncan MacMillan.
Earth Day's campaign in 2018 is to
call for a stop to one use plastic bags
and two touring zero-waste nomads
are stopping off on their national tour
to be part of the festival. They will
present two free workshops on how
to become a zero waste household
and making skin care and bathroom
products from waste products.
This is just a sample of the more than
60 events over 6 days of festival. It
is an opportunity to visit the Yellow-
olivers in clyde
Established in 1869 by merchant
Benjamin Naylor, Olivers in Clyde is one of
Central Otago’s most significant historic
landmarks with a Heritage NZ category one
listing. Naylor saw financial opportunity in
provisioning the many miners that flocked
to the region’s goldfields and for
over 100 years the buildings
have continued to provide
essential supplies and
sustenance to locals and
weary travellers alike.
Today’s owners, David
and Andrea Ritchie took
over Olivers 8 years
ago, meticulously and
sympathetically restoring
the buildings and relaunching
its boutique
accommodation. Eleven en
suited rooms within the old
stables and the original homestead
blend the old with the new, creating a
contemporary ambience integrally linked
with bygone days.
The final step in the refurbishment was
the re-opening of the restaurant in 2015,
within the stone walls of the original
Victoria Store. Fresh, clean flavours are the
hallmark of cuisine at Olivers Restaurant,
featuring superb local and seasonal
produce and where a “level of uniqueness’’
is providing diners with a memorable
experience.
Also, established on site is the
Victoria Store Brewery and
Bar, while a new extension
houses the Merchant of
Clyde Café and Deli. The
brewery offers a fine
selection of craft beers
on tap, while the café’s
house-made goods
cater for early morning
customers starting the
Otago Central Rail Trail and
those wishing to relax during
the day from the rush of the
world, have a coffee and fresh local
pastry in the courtyard!
The Cromwell Golf Course is a sand
further from the sea than any other
the natural lie of the land and feature
a sandy, wasteland feel, rough with
patches of marram grass and large
undulating greens.
The course has 5 tee locations ranging
from beginner to championship
providing a real challenge for all
levels of golfer and was rated 34th
precinct
One of Central Otago’s best kept
secrets, the Cromwell Heritage
Precinct is tucked away on the shores
of Lake Dunstan, at the confluence of
the Kawarau and Clutha arms of the
lake.
From an idea in the mid eighties the
historic village has been developed
by volunteers over the years.
Some buildings have been
re-built from stone from
the original buildings
while others are a faithful
re-creation built to
modern building code.
It is not only a delightful
and free visitor attraction
with historical displays and
charming buildings, but also a
hub for artists and craftspeople.
The schist stone cottages and shops
are tenanted by a quality-focused
arts collective, international-standard
printmaker, renowned goldsmith,
highly original wire sculptor and a
plant expert and maker of herbal
creams and perfumes. There is also
Professional, fully stocked pro-shop
along with electric cart, trundle, and
club hire.
tHE LocAtIon
Situated on the 45th parallel, the
inland location and surrounding
mountains creates a microclimate
nearing semi-arid. With less than
400mm of rain and 2200 hours of
sunshine per year, golf can be played
comfortably year-round with dry
underfoot conditions.
The golf course is in the centre of
the town, which in turn is surrounded
by vineyards and orchards. This
is the centre of the world renown
Central Otago Pinot Noir producing
locations of Bannockburn, Bendigo
and Lowburn, so wine tasting
opportunities are numerous.
a charming second-hand book store,
unique gift outlets and two great
cafes.
The historic displays tell the story of
the incredible 1860s gold rush when
sparsely populated Central Otago was
suddenly inundated with thousands
of hopeful prospectors. Children
love the talking ‘locals’
who tell the yarns, lifesize
horses and secret
alleyways, as well as the
ducks, fishing wharf and
picnic areas.
Named in 2014 as one of
New Zealand’s best ‘hidden
gems’ by AA Directions
Magazine, the precinct is
gradually being discovered by
overseas visitors, Kiwi families, makers
of television commercials and locals.
Located on Melmore Terrace, the
Precinct hosts the Cromwell Farmers
Market every Sunday from Labour
autumn all about colour in
cromWell
After a long hot summer vintners and orchardists
are among those welcoming a glorious autumn to
the Cromwell Basin.
The last grapes and fruit are gathered as the hills
turn gold but there’s still plenty to do with Cellar
Doors and fruit stalls welcoming visitors most of the
year and four world-class ski fields getting into gear
for the season.
At one of the area’s oldest vineyards, Carrick, fine
dining is accompanied by fine art. Some of the
country’s best known artists such as Nigel Brown
and Hannah Kidd are currently exhibiting and
there’s interesting stuff underfoot as well as on the
walls. Under the restaurant floor, visible through
glass panels are stacks of barrels in the vineyard’s
own winery.
Cellar door manager Sol Felix says the main
advantage of having your own, is that you can work
to your own schedule. Grapes can come in precisely
when the winemaker feels they are ready for how he
wants process them. The result are unique offerings,
beautifully named and labelled.
Bannockburn’s offerings in general are expanding
with new cellar doors opening as well as newcomers
in art, craft and food.
The former general store now houses Transpire,
a fibre studio that bursts with colour thanks to its
illustrious owner, Mellissa Uber-Lopez and business
partner Nicola Galt.
Friends drop off wool to the pair’s 1880 building
where a flurry of new colours and textures are
bursting forth in this most Kiwi of enterprises.
“I love what I do,” Mellissa, originally from Malaysia,
says. “I just want to make my own colours and I
don’t want to be like everyone else. It’s New Zealand
wool that I love and that everything is handmade.”
More colour is in store for Cromwell at the second
‘Light Up Winter’ party in the Cromwell Mall in late
July. A sea of fairy lights, music, competitions and
much more are planned for the Cromwell & District’s
Promotion Group event.
Quest Farm Wines
Quest Farm Wines began in 1999
when vintner Mark Mason left the
Sacred Hill Winery he had co-founded
in 1986, to focus on producing “one
variety” wines.
He established Quest Farm Wines
on steep undulating Central Otago
slopes which offered a variety of soil
types and perfect potential. Today
Quest Farm comprises 20 hectares
with 18 different individual vineyard
blocks and produces fine Central
Otago pinot noir grapes, enabling the
creation of rich complex wines.
With single-vineyard bottling, Mark
has been able to achieve subtle style
with aromas of rosehip, dark fruit and
spice with a long, structured palate.
It is the wine he likes to drink and is
the wine Quest Farm shares with the
world.
Quest Farm wines are available in
New Zealand, Australia and China and
are stocked locally in Central Otago
or can be purchased on-line. further
Wooing Tree is situated in the heart
of Central Otago, New Zealand, next
to the town of Cromwell and opposite
the big fruit sculpture. The family
owned single vineyard site specialises
in Pinot Noir and also produces a Rosé,
a still Blanc de Noir called “Blondie”
and now a sweet wine called “Tickled
Pink” from the same grape variety.
Wooing Tree Chardonnay and Pinot
Gris have also been added to the
portfolio. The Wooing Tree label has
had a remarkable first few years, 10
trophies, numerous gold medals, 5
star ratings, and praise from wine
writers worldwide.
Jointly owned by Steve and Thea
Farquharson and Jane (Steve’s sister)
and her husband Geoff Bews, they
returned from overseas to run the
vineyard, having setup the 18 hectare
property in 2002. Steve had studied
viticulture, wine making and the wine
trade at Plumpton College in the UK,
and Jane had also studied viticulture
there.
Nevertheless, owning and developing
a vineyard was still a sharp learning
curve.
wine tastings • sales • lUnCHes • FUnCtions • weddings
The Central Otago location gives a
perfect mix of sub regional climates
and optimum heat degree-days and
the aim was to produce a pinot noir
with rich and intense fruit flavours
from low yielding vines.
During the clearing of the land for
planting, they discovered a 100 year
old tree commanded a place in local
folk lore as “the wooing tree” and
a rendezvous for sweethearts and
lovers. The tree was retained and the
story provided the perfect name for
both the vineyard and the owners’
new wine label! Today Wooing Tree
sits prominently in the middle of the
vineyard, which has become a popular
location for marriage proposals and
weddings.
We offer wine tastings, sales, lunches
Warbirds & WHeels
Wanaka For all seasons
This visitor attraction at the Wanaka
Airport is sure to keep the entire
family drooling, just as much as you,
with its amazing collection of classic
aircraft and cars.
The attraction opened in December
2011 and features warbirds aircraft,
stunning classic cars, the story of
local aviation and business pioneer Sir
Tim Wallis, a retail shop selling lots of
memorabilia including a great range
of tin signs, and a retro 1905’s style
Diner.
The five warbirds aircraft cover
the evolution of fighter planes. The
display starts with the SE5A from WWI
and moves through WWII with the
Hurricane and Vampire to more recent
warbirds, such as the Strikemaster
and the Skyhawk.
Then there are the wheels with up
to 30 vehicles, and the emphasis on
quality rather than quantity. Most of
the cars currently on display are from
the 1930’s era, with plenty of space to
show off their free-flowing lines and
unique styles. There’s the magnificent
1934 Duesenberg Model J, the only
one of its kind in the Southern
Hemisphere, as well as one of only a
handful located outside the US. The
display also features a number of
Packards, Cadillacs, Thunderbirds,
Lincolns and some great Fords.
The Sir Tim Wallis display takes you
on a journey following his life and
times of this wonderful Southern Man.
Sir Tim is famous for being one of
the pioneers of the live deer recovery
industry, he was also a major player in
local tourism, and of course started
the hugely successful Warbirds Over
Wanaka international air show.
The beauty of the Warbirds & Wheels
attraction is that when others in your
group may have had enough, they can
head out to browse in the retail shop
or grab a seat in the Diner to enjoy a
great coffee or one of their famous
Warbirds pies.
The attraction is situated on your
right, just inside the main entrance
to the Wanaka Airport, and is open
every day (except Statutory Holidays)
from 8am (Diner) and 9am (Museum).
or dinner and watch the breathtaking
sunset against a backdrop of lake and
mountains whatever the season or the
reason.

2018
Puzzling World has had a busy
summer but not just with an influx of
visitors, with many small additions,
finishing touches and plans advanced
to help cement their “weird” theme.
Mid-December saw the unveiling of
a large illusionary mural inside the
businesses’ Sculptillusion Gallery.
“We’ve been very lucky to have had
an extremely talented local artist,
Minhal Al Halabi on site to create an
incredible scene that blends NZ native
bush, iconic London landmarks and
operatic superstars together with
morphing lions, birds, fish and many
other whimsical touches. In line with
Wanaka’s only Town Centre Hotel,
Wanaka Hotel occupies a prime site
with magnificent views of the lake
and foreshore. Welcoming locals
and visitors alike, this 3 Star hotel
offers a range of facilities including
accommodation, public bar, TAB,
pokies, two restaurants and café.
The café is open for breakfast, lunch
or coffee and cake, there is authentic
Mexican fare at Amigo’s or you can
treat yourself to the Bullock Bar’s
Steakhouse menu. Accommodation
is comfortable and affordable with
double, twin and triple rooms all with
The location is brilliant for lakeside
for getting to other attractions like
Wanaka Hotel
our business always seeking to add
intrigue to all our spaces, this fits the
bill!” says Duncan Spear, marketing
manager
Also in time for the holidays, the
latest in Holographic advertising was
given a home in the Hologram Hall.
A Holoblade, featuring a rotating
display of filling Coke cans, fluttering
butterflies, rotating Nike shoes and
other objects seemingly floating in
space has proven yet again to be a
simple but popular offering.
A new year will also bring a new
exhibition to the business that
celebrates what might be described
Puzzling World, Wanaka Museum. You
are also in the heart of the shopping
precinct. Renowned for its relaxed
atmosphere, Wanaka Hotel is the
place to stay this summer!
as “genius stupidy” A large display
of impossible or useless inventions
aimed to amuse, confuse and amaze.
From Steam-powered Walking sticks,
Umbrella Shoes, a Multi-Tool glove,
2-Way Bike and many more items,
we ask the question - how would that
ever work?!
With an incredible stone sculpture
commission just completed by
another talented local due to be
added in March, if you haven’t been
to “Wanaka’s World of Weirdness”
recently, now’s the time!
The Wanaka Transport and Toy
Museum is one of the largest
private collections in the Southern
Hemisphere, with over 60,000 items
on display. Acquired over many
years by the late Gerald Rhodes via
advertisements, auctions, markets
and garage sales, the varied collection
has something to interest everyone,
whether adult or child.
Described as a “pandora’s box of
surprises” the transport exhibits
include over 600 rare and unusual
aircraft, cars, trucks, motorcycles,
fire appliances, military vehicles,
tractors and an extraordinary range of
“automobilia.”
Among the more unusual exhibits are
some “must see” items including one
of the world’s largest single-engine
bi-plane and the world’s last original
1915 Sunbeam Rover ambulance. You
can also see some of the vehicles from
the new movie “Pete’s Dragon” and a
1924 Buick Limousine, only one of 4
ever built.
Nostalgia rules in the Toy Collection
where over 50,000 items feature
clockwork toys, pedal cars, money
boxes, battery-operated toys, teddies
and dolls, including 500 Barbie dolls
complete with accessories. Always
popular is the Star Wars collection of
toys, figures and memorabilia.
Most exhibits are in remarkable
working order and many are used for
authentic film props and advertising.
The Manapouri Motels and Holiday
Park have been run by the Nicholsons
ever since they arrived from the USA in
1970, discovered the beauty of Fiordland
and never left!
Forty years later they continue to
provide a welcoming haven for travellers
from near and far, offering clean
comfortable accommodation options
and a wealth of knowledge about New
Zealand’s World Heritage wilderness.
With wonderful views of Lake
Manapouri, visitors can choose from
motels, cabins or camping sites. The 10
motel units have self catering facilities
and range from studio units for two
persons to a three bedroom house
known as the “Green Crib.”
There are also 18 “cabins with
character” for more budget conscious
travellers. Each cabin is quirkily different,
5 include basic kitchen facilities while
the remainder use the well equipped
on-site communal kitchen and shower/
toilet facilities. For campers there are
powered or non-powered sites which
are beautifully situated to enjoy lake
views or a tranquil sheltered location
among the trees.
The Manapouri Motels and Holiday
Park is located close to Manapouri’s
restaurants and pub as well as local
walking tracks, lake based recreational
activities and a variety of excursions to
Fiordland’s unspoiled environment and
wildlife.
