SPECIAL EVENTS<br />
• INCOME-TAX-PREPARATION ASSISTANCE<br />
– Mondays thru <strong>April</strong> 16 th , 1-5 PM, Meeting<br />
Room. Representatives from the AARP will provide<br />
free income-tax-preparation assistance<br />
for low-income taxpayers. Patrons should<br />
bring the following information to the session<br />
if possible: photo ID; Social Security card(s) for<br />
self, spouse and all dependents; last year’s tax<br />
return; W-2, 1099s and any other compensation<br />
received in 2017; unemployment compensation<br />
statements and any other documents<br />
that are necessary to complete your return.<br />
This service is free and open to the public on<br />
a first-come, first-served basis. Income-tax<br />
forms are not available at the libraries, but<br />
patrons may use the libraries’ computers and<br />
printers to download and print out the forms<br />
from the IRS website, www.irs.gov, during<br />
regular library hours. A library card is needed<br />
to use the printers and the cost to print is 10¢<br />
per black-and-white page.<br />
• CHESS DAY @ THE LIBRARY - Saturday,<br />
<strong>April</strong> 7 th , 10:30 AM-2:30 PM, Meeting Room.<br />
People of all ages and skill levels - from beginners<br />
to advanced - who are interested in<br />
playing chess, are invited to practice their<br />
strategies while playing against others in a<br />
relaxed, stress-free environment. Learn a new<br />
chess move (or two) during this come-and-go<br />
activity. Experienced players will be on hand to<br />
provide tips and assistance. A limited number<br />
of chess sets will be provided, but players are<br />
welcome to bring their own sets as well.<br />
• ANCIENT EMPIRES-EARLY CHRISTIANITY<br />
- Saturday, <strong>April</strong> 7 th , 1-3 PM, Meeting Room.<br />
In this fourth of five programs on Ancient<br />
Empires, former architecture professor Sheba<br />
Akhtar will talk about the origins of Christianity,<br />
beginning with the birth of Jesus in<br />
Bethlehem (4 BCE), his baptism by John the<br />
Baptist (20 CE) and his crucifixion in Jerusalem<br />
(30 CE). Hear about the experiences of the<br />
Apostles during the reformation of Judaism,<br />
the conversion of the Apostle Paul (35 CE) and<br />
Christianity for gentiles and the creation of the<br />
New Testament in the Christian Bible. Akhtar<br />
will also talk about Christian persecution by<br />
the Romans, the conversion of Constantine<br />
the Great and the legalization of Christianity.<br />
She will conclude by sharing history on the<br />
Hagia Sophia in Constantinople/Istanbul and<br />
the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy. In<br />
May, the series will conclude with a program<br />
on Islam.<br />
• RETIREMENT: MAKING YOUR MONEY LAST<br />
& SOCIAL SECURITY: YOUR QUESTIONS<br />
ANSWERED - Saturday, <strong>April</strong> 14 th , 10:30 AM-<br />
12:30 PM, Meeting Room. This 2-part program<br />
is designed to help individuals get a better<br />
understanding of how to financially prepare<br />
for retirement. During the first part of the<br />
program, “Retirement: Making Your Money<br />
Last,” get tips on how to build a reasonable<br />
and sustainable strategy for managing income<br />
and expenses during retirement. Learn how<br />
to prepare in advance for circumstances such<br />
as inflation, healthcare expenses and market<br />
volatility. <strong>The</strong> second part of the program, “Social<br />
Security: Your Questions Answered,” will<br />
focus on social security. Learn about different<br />
options and how they can impact retirement<br />
savings. Get a better understanding of tax<br />
considerations.<br />
• THE ART OF HENNA - Thursday, <strong>April</strong> 19 th ,<br />
6:30-7:30 PM, Meeting Room. Professional<br />
henna artist Sakina Khuzeima Jafferjee will<br />
talk about the history of henna and its uses as<br />
a dye to create temporary body art. Learn how<br />
it is made, how it is applied and how to take<br />
care of the designs after they are completed.<br />
Jafferjee will demonstrate different types of<br />
henna designs while she explains their significance.<br />
Anyone who wishes to try a henna<br />
design must complete a consent form. This<br />
program is intended for all ages, but those<br />
under the age of 18 must have a consent form<br />
signed by a parent before coming into contact<br />
with the henna. A consent form is not required<br />
for those who do not wish to come into contact<br />
with the henna.<br />
• POWER OF ATTORNEY & DESIGNATION<br />
OF GUARDIANSHIP - Saturday, <strong>April</strong> 21 st ,<br />
10:30-11:30 AM, Meeting Room. Linda Jordan,<br />
founder of Senior Resources Collaborative,<br />
will explain the concepts of power of attorney<br />
and legal guardianship. Learn about the<br />
differences between medical and statutory<br />
power of attorney and what they enable or<br />
allow a person to do or not do on behalf of an<br />
individual. She will also explain the role of a<br />
guardian and why it is sometimes beneficial<br />
to have two different guardians to oversee<br />
healthcare and finances. Jordan is a licensed<br />
real estate consultant and a certified senior<br />
real-estate specialist. <strong>The</strong> material that will<br />
be discussed is for informational purposes<br />
only and is not a substitute for the advice of<br />
an attorney.<br />
