First Rite of <strong>Spring</strong><br />

The Pasque flower is the first<br />

flower to appear on the prairie.<br />

Observing the Pasque<br />

flowers in bloom, the first<br />

color to appear on the drab late winter<br />

landscape, is often referred to as the<br />

“First Rite of <strong>Spring</strong>”. Even before<br />

grass turns green and often with snow<br />

still lingering, the Pasque flowers<br />

brighten the colorless landscape, pushing<br />

up a fuzzy stem and bud. The pale<br />

lavender-blue blossoms open just as<br />

their leaves begin to appear. At about<br />

the same time, <strong>Spring</strong> Ephemerals like<br />

Bloodroot and Trilliums are starting to<br />

add color to our native forests around<br />

the lakes.<br />

as they emerge from another winter’s<br />

rest. Watch for a date to visit a Martin<br />

County native prairie where the Pasque<br />
