Inquiry into horrific dog bashing
• By Bridget Rutherford
INVESTIGATIONS are under
way after a Spreydon family’s
american staffordshire was
allegedly bashed to death with a
brick and drowned after he got
out of their backyard.
Greta Houghton said her
family was devastated their dog
Bruno had to be put down after
the attack in Centennial Park
near the Pioneer Recreation and
Sport Centre on March 9.
“His brains were hanging out,”
she said.
“The vet actually said they had
never seen a head so swollen.”
What occurred in the lead up
to the attack has not yet been
confirmed, but police attended
after reports two dogs were fighting
and a person had been bitten.
Police took Bruno to the vet
and referred the incident onto
the city council’s animal control
team, which is investigating.
The SPCA has also launched an
investigation.
Miss Houghton said Bruno got
out of their backyard at about
5pm and they were out looking
for him 5-10min later.
“At 7pm, my mum got a call
from the vet’s saying ‘we have
Bruno here, we need you to come
here’.”
Miss Houghton said Bruno
LOVED: Bruno’s owners say he was bashed to the point where
he needed to be put down.
was brain dead by the time
he arrived at the After Hours
Veterinary Centre on Disraeli St,
and had to be put down.
She said he suffered from blunt
force trauma to the head from
being hit with a brick, and had
signs of drowning.
“My granddad contacted me
and said Bruno’s at the vet. I
NOW OPEN
didn’t even drive I just ran down
the street like ‘where is my dog’.
My family was there when they
put him down, I got there just a
little too late.”
A police spokeswoman said
they received a call just after 6pm
reporting two dogs were fighting
in Centennial Park.
“One person was reportedly
bitten by one of the dogs, receiving
cuts to their arms.”
She said an ambulance was
advised. “The dog was injured
as a result of the incident, police
took it to a vet, and the dog was
subsequently put down.”
She said police spoke with witnesses
and the matter had been
referred to the city council and
SPCA.
“For that reason, it would not
be appropriate for police to comment
further.”
Miss Houghton said she could
not believe Bruno would attack
another dog or person.
“He was a very friendly dog,
he wouldn’t hurt a soul. The only
time he would growl back was if
a dog had growled at him.”
City council head of regulatory
compliance Tracey Weston said:
“The council has received a complaint
relating to this alleged dog
attack and this matter is in the
early stages of the investigation
and ongoing.”
An SPCA spokeswoman said
the investigation was in its early
stages and it was gathering information.
“But we would also like to
appeal to anyone who witnessed
the incident or who has any
information to please give us a
call.”
