46 the advertizer Kilbarchan Community Nursery Our new topic is Spain and the children have been learning about passports, travel and Spanish food and customs. As most of the staff have now completed a Spanish language course, the children will be learning some words and songs in Spanish. The children have been out and about on visits. The first to the ‘Monarch of the Glen’ workshop at Paisley Museum and art gallery where they learned all about the famous painting and made their own stag puppet. While there, they looked at paintings from the recent ‘Inspired’ exhibition which included a painting by one of our nursery children which was chosen for the exhibition. Another group of children visited a local travel agents to find out information about travelling abroad and brought back lots of brochures for our role play area travel agents in nursery. At the end of March, the pre-school will have the chance to enjoy a concert ‘A day at the museum’ by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the concert hall in Glasgow. Duchal Nursery School The children are really embracing our music project learning about the orchestra and trying their hand at all sorts of instruments! We have started learning about the string section, all the children really enjoyed trying out the violin and listened to some classical music with strings. The percussion session certainly transformed the “Quiet Room” into a space full of creativity and sound! We’re looking forward to our Easter Egg Hunt and keeping our fingers crossed for a visit from the Easter Bunny! New Entries to Duchal: We are now offering places for the intake in August 2018. If your child will be of nursery age after the summer and you are looking at your pre school options, please do get in touch to have an informal look around. This was a challenge for everyone and can we please thank all our parents for working with us during these three days and like you I think we were all pleased to get back to work on the Monday! Caitlin Smith has cause to celebrate this month as she achieved her SVQ Level 3 qualification – a big congratulations – and is now supporting the pre school children as they start to make their early transition visits to their new school. Congratulations also to Sherie Gilchrist on achieving her SVQ level 4 management qualification, all her hard work certainly paid off. This month the Little Ladybirds are continuing to celebrate two of their “oddball holidays with National Siblings Day on the 10th and Tell a Story Day on the 27th April. These fun days (like the popcorn day in February) are providing lots of excitement in the room for both staff and children. The little ones are also celebrating their new garden area with its lovely all-weather surface and the children have been ‘listening to the crunch’ as they play outdoors. Family Week starts on the 16th April and the whole nursery will be organising lots of fun, stimulating, challenging, engaging….. You get the picture….. Activities . Parents can always come and visit at any time, but this week is a chance for all carers to come along, meet other families and hopefully share some memories, ideas or skills with the children. Now the 19-year-old is now in pole position to embark on a worthwhile career after intu Braehead gave him the chance to become a modern apprentice at the shopping and leisure destination. Now in his second year, Angus – a former Gryffe High pupil and student at West College Scotland – has chosen to specialise in Health and Safety and having already gained a Level 2 qualifi cation in Business and Administration, he hopes to receive an Occupational Health and Safety Level 3 qualifi cation by the end of his modern apprenticeship. He is also guaranteed a full-time job with intu Braehead after his apprenticeship is completed. Angus said: “I would encourage young people to apply for modern apprenticeships because it gives you a launch pad for the rest of your working life... Thanks to intu Braehead I’ll get a qualification, I won’t have any debt from having a student loan, I’m earning money and I’m getting on the job experience.” One of the high points of Angus’s first year was creating and making a presentation to the intu’s board of directors about the company’s modern apprenticeship scheme. He added: “I will look back on my time at intu Braehead as a lifechanging experience.” Peter Beagley, regional centre director at intu Braehead: “It’s really satisfying to see someone like Angus being given the opportunity to forge a career for himself and develop and mature as a young person.” Strawberry Field Out of School Care Over the last month we have been extremely busy. We have been putting our wellbeing and physical training into action, with a variety of different outdoor games such as basketball, dodge ball and badminton to name a few. We have also been having lots of Lego activities being enjoyed by all. The girls have been busy painting their nails and making jewellery. We will now be preparing for Easter with lots of different indoor and outdoor activities taking place. Mrs McKeegan and the boys and girls of Primary 2/1 celebrated Mother’s Day by hosting a Muffins for Mum afternoon. They baked a sensational selection of flavoured muffins and invited their mums into school for an afternoon of fun, finished off with a fabulous home baked muffin, they were delicious! World Book Day was celebrated throughout the school with children dressing as a character from their favourite book. Parents came in to share the joy of reading with their children, classes joined together to read to one another and a massive book swap was organised to find new homes for our old books. Kilmacolm really does love reading. Primary 6 recently participated in The Great Big Food Cycle Event where they were learning about Climate Change and how to minimise food waste. After completing a series of challenges, they were rewarded with a school wormery! Now we will be able to use our lunch waste to create compost for the school garden thanks to our magnificent wormery. Generation Science landed in Primary 3 to teach us the science behind magnets. It was out of this world! At the Port Glasgow Bulb Show the nursery received second in class for their beautiful Spring bulb selection, whilst Primary 6 won first in class for their stunning Button Holes, thanks to Mrs Cook for helping us. Primary 7 had an amazing time at residential trip to Dalguise taking part in a range of hair raising activities including trapeze, zip wire, Jacob’s ladder and the Giant Swing. They were extremely proud of what they achieved, well done P7. Kilmacolm Nursery Class We have had a busy few weeks at Kilmacolm nursery class. Due to the snow we had to postpone world book day which we held on Friday 9th March. The children celebrated world book day by dressing as a character from their favourite book. We visited the school library to read some books and even shared stories with the children from the school. Meet our buddy We have started our nursery to school transition programme. The children have been joining in with primary 1 at playtime, we also met our buddies who are going to help look after us when we start school. Our parents also met our buddies. Port Glasgow Bulb Show The children put a variety of entries into the bulb show this year. This included the children making their own handicrafts and paintings. The children also planted bulbs. Can you believe we won overall second prize! We can’t wait to receive our certificate and spend our prize money. @GryffeAds www.advertizer.co.uk
