International Rugby Programme
The 2018 Burnside High School International Rugby Programme (IRP)
commenced on 19 March. This year there are boys and girls from Germany,
Argentina, Italy, Korea, Japan, Afghanistan and Scotland in the group. The
IRP provides a programme of detailed rugby skill instruction, weight-training,
speed and agility sessions and of course rugby team involvement until the
end of August.
The first two weeks involve detailed orientation with several guest speakers
as well as physical and skill testing. The orientation is designed to help
the students enjoy their homestay experience, to provide advice on how
to proactively interact with their team-mates and to understand the New
Zealand road rules - all in all, how to enjoy the next 22 weeks of their rugby
adventure. The IRP has been running at Burnside High School from 2014 but
has already produced Olympians in Sevens and male and female national
team players in 7s and 15s.
A visit from Seasprite helicopter
The Navy Seasprite Helicopter is en route to the Warbirds Over Wanaka
Airshow. When the opportunity arose for the Seasprite helicopter to make
school visits on its way south, Burnside High School jumped at the chance.
STEM activities and exhibitions
Fifteen students from Ashburton College and Burnside High School
recently gathered at the Burnside Campus for four days of Germantaught
STEM activities and exhibitions (science, technology, engineering
& mathematics).
This opportunity was offered to all German-learning students from
the two schools as part of the PASCH schools program through the
Goethe-Institut, and was overseen by Goethe staff member Judith
Geare.
The foundation of the course was laid out on the first day, Friday,
where Bianca Violet and Philipp Legner from Imaginary introduced
the students to several computer programs based on fractals and
polynomial graphing. From there the students were set free to think
up their own exhibition projects and take them from paper sketches to
reality over the next three days.
With Christ The King School directly across the road they were also warmly
welcomed over.
As part of our career development programme, we invite many tertiary
providers to speak with our students throughout the year, to provide them
with a wide range of information and to assist them with their decision
making. It is not often that they turn up in a helicopter!
Today's helicopter visit was an amazing opportunity for 20 students who
have expressed an interest in the Defence Force. They not only got to see a
piece of the Defence Force in action; they also got to interact with the flight
crew and pick their brains about the variety of occupations available. Many
subject classes also benefited from the Seasprite’s visit, including Science
classes discussing the transfer of energy that occurs during a helicopter take
off; Physics classes discussing the rotor blades; and Mathematics classes with
problem sets based around helicopters.
We are grateful to the Defence Force for offering this opportunity to our
school.
Ideas ranged from metre-tall double pendulums to intricate optical
illusions, something from every aspect of the STEM curriculum.
The exhibits will be set up for viewing at the Burnside High School
library until the end of Term 1 and then will travel down to Ashburton to
allow all interested students (and keen maths teachers) to view, learn
and interact.
