International Rugby Programme<br />

The <strong>2018</strong> Burnside High School International Rugby Programme (IRP)<br />

commenced on 19 March. This year there are boys and girls from Germany,<br />

Argentina, Italy, Korea, Japan, Afghanistan and Scotland in the group. The<br />

IRP provides a programme of detailed rugby skill instruction, weight-training,<br />

speed and agility sessions and of course rugby team involvement until the<br />

end of August.<br />

The first two weeks involve detailed orientation with several guest speakers<br />

as well as physical and skill testing. The orientation is designed to help<br />

the students enjoy their homestay experience, to provide advice on how<br />

to proactively interact with their team-mates and to understand the New<br />

Zealand road rules - all in all, how to enjoy the next 22 weeks of their rugby<br />

adventure. The IRP has been running at Burnside High School from 2014 but<br />

has already produced Olympians in Sevens and male and female national<br />

team players in 7s and 15s.<br />

BHS PTA Uniform Shop<br />

The PTA Uniform Shop stocks new and second hand items. The shop<br />

is located at the front of the school in A1. Now is the time to purchase<br />

winter uniforms, all items are available at the shop.<br />

Opening Hours are:<br />

Monday lunchtime 1:00pm - 2:00pm<br />

Tuesdays after school 2.45pm - 4.00pm<br />

Wednesday 4th <strong>April</strong> after school 2.30pm - 4.00pm<br />

A visit from Seasprite helicopter<br />

The Navy Seasprite Helicopter is en route to the Warbirds Over Wanaka<br />

Airshow. When the opportunity arose for the Seasprite helicopter to make<br />

school visits on its way south, Burnside High School jumped at the chance.<br />

STEM activities and exhibitions<br />

Fifteen students from Ashburton College and Burnside High School<br />

recently gathered at the Burnside Campus for four days of Germantaught<br />

STEM activities and exhibitions (science, technology, engineering<br />

& mathematics).<br />

This opportunity was offered to all German-learning students from<br />

the two schools as part of the PASCH schools program through the<br />

Goethe-Institut, and was overseen by Goethe staff member Judith<br />

Geare.<br />

The foundation of the course was laid out on the first day, Friday,<br />

where Bianca Violet and Philipp Legner from Imaginary introduced<br />

the students to several computer programs based on fractals and<br />

polynomial graphing. From there the students were set free to think<br />

up their own exhibition projects and take them from paper sketches to<br />

reality over the next three days.<br />

With Christ The King School directly across the road they were also warmly<br />

welcomed over.<br />

As part of our career development programme, we invite many tertiary<br />

providers to speak with our students throughout the year, to provide them<br />

with a wide range of information and to assist them with their decision<br />

making. It is not often that they turn up in a helicopter!<br />

Today's helicopter visit was an amazing opportunity for 20 students who<br />

have expressed an interest in the Defence Force. They not only got to see a<br />

piece of the Defence Force in action; they also got to interact with the flight<br />

crew and pick their brains about the variety of occupations available. Many<br />

subject classes also benefited from the Seasprite’s visit, including Science<br />

classes discussing the transfer of energy that occurs during a helicopter take<br />

off; Physics classes discussing the rotor blades; and Mathematics classes with<br />

problem sets based around helicopters.<br />

We are grateful to the Defence Force for offering this opportunity to our<br />

school.<br />

Ideas ranged from metre-tall double pendulums to intricate optical<br />

illusions, something from every aspect of the STEM curriculum.<br />

The exhibits will be set up for viewing at the Burnside High School<br />

library until the end of Term 1 and then will travel down to Ashburton to<br />

allow all interested students (and keen maths teachers) to view, learn<br />

and interact.<br />
