Ellis & Associates Re-Certification Course 

Sunday 



Prerequisites: Swim 200 yards (8 lengths); tread water for 2 

minutes without using your hands; perform a feet-first surface 

dive to lift a brick off the bottom of the pool, plus proof of valid 

Ellis and Associates certification. Upon successful completion of 

water skills and written exam, participants receive a 1-year recertification 

in Ellis and Associates Lifeguarding. Re-certification 

includes First Aid, Adult, Child and Infant CPR, Oxygen 

Administration and AED. No refunds regardless of passing or 

failing the course.

Dinos and Dragons

Children will get to meet living relatives of the dinosaurs and 

friendly dragons as they get up-close looks at our birds of prey, 

turtles, and lizards in the nature center. We will also perform some 

hands-on experiments, creating fun volcanoes, earthquakes, 

quicksand and more!

Family Nature Workshop: Animal Signs and Tracking

We don't always see all the different animals that live in UMLY's 

Cassatt Preserve, but we can often find signs that they leave 

behind. In this workshop we will learn about scat, rubbings, fur, 

pellets, and how to read different animal tracks.

The ponds, wetlands, and streams of the Cassatt Preserve are 

brimming with life. Some creatures are easy to spot, while others

In this class we will spend time with our resident hawks in the 

raptor center, learning about special adaptations of raptors (birds

Cassatt Preserve.

School of Birding: Birding by Ear 

Saturday 



What's the difference between a bird song and a bird call? Do you 

know how to identify your neighborhood birds by sound only? Did 

you know that some birds make dozens of different sounds? This 

workshop is a great introduction to bird song and will help you 

level up from being a birdwatcher to being full-fledged birder.

The Biggest Week in American Birding 

Sunday, Friday & Saturday 



Your family is invited to this one-of-a-kind adventure to 

experience the biggest week in American birding in northwestern 

Ohio! This beautiful locale along the southern edge of Lake Erie is 

arguably the best place to witness spring migration of songbirds 

anywhere in North America. Led by UMLY’s own birding guru, Brian 

“BQ” Quindlen, the group will take day-long excursions into the 

Magee Marsh and nearby birding hot spots for phenomenal upclose 

views of these beautiful song birds, with many photo 

opportunities! BQ is a lifelong naturalist with an insatiable passion 

for birds! For over fifteen years, BQ has led birding and adventure 

trips throughout the United States for UMLY. Outside of the Y, he 

is an elementary school teacher. Participants under the age of 18 

must be accompanied by a registered adult. Deadline to register: 

Friday, April 13, 2018. Program fee includes: Festival registration 

(includes activities, vendors, speakers) and expert guided day-long

Fishing poles, tackle boxes, and tackle will be provided. Drop-off is at 

9am behind the Nature Center, and pick-up is in the same location at 3pm.

A fast-paced class offers minimum instruction but plenty of hitting 

drills to develop aggressive 2x2 play. Players learn to judge where 

the ball is going, work on improved court coverage and are fairly 

consistent when hitting medium paced shots, but may not be 

comfortable with all strokes or lack execution when trying for 

directional control, depth and power.
