Approach towards a networking project…. project
• In early 2000, the oceanographic community organized a rather
informal meeting in the frame of CIESM Congress and tried to
discuss ideas on the already observed changing status of the
Mediterranean, especially in the eastern Basin. The aim of this
initiative was to bring together not only the oceanographers of the
western and eastern Mediterranean, but mainly the atmospheric
and oceanographic community of the Mediterranean and Europe,
to work together under the auspices of an international
Organization, if possible.
• The idea of a project focused on the Mediterranean climate was
initially proposed by Paola Malanotte-Rizzoli Malanotte Rizzoli and Roberta Boscolo,
a couple of years later, to fill a gap in the Mediterranean area
which was not addressed in the initial CLIVAR implementation
plan. This proposal has been shared by a progressively larger
group of scientists and succeeded as coordinated scientific
activities under the CLIVAR umbrella and later on as the
networking ESF/MedCLIVAR program..
