Why the Mediterranean Sea????? • Since the beginning of the 20th century and up to late 80s the Mediterranean was considered as an almost “steady steady state” state basin, with some small scale variability and trends in T and S in the IW and DW. • Furthermore, since the ‘90s 90s abrupt changes occurred so that the Mediterranean is at present in a transitional state. The Mediterranean as a laboratory Basin • All the above mentioned characteristics/ “advantages advantages” of the Mediterranean led to the conclusion that this Sea is successfully considered as an ideal test basin for climatic research. • Monitoring (continuous data acquisition and archiving) and modeling strategies (model development), as well as closer cooperation of scientists from pertinent fields are continuously needed for better understanding the past and present variability and predicting the future of the Mediterranean region for the mankind benefit.
