WELCOME...
...to the April / May 2018 edition of VV...
The arrival of Spring in P&TG is very welcome
after what seems to have been a long and cold
winter. Penn and Tylers Green seems to me to
be at its best in Spring, as the winter gloom is
lifted by the arrival of spring flowers, then our
woods and green spaces are transformed into
our familiar and uplifting green landscape.
Change is all around. In this edition of VV we
have updates on the Gomm Valley development
plans, the plans under consideration to create a
unitary authority in Bucks, the sad news, that at
the heart of the village, the Cottage Bookshop,
is to close, and the Red Lion is up for sale
Upcoming, over the next few months, the
village will host a variety of events, which are
familiar and anticipated. Over the May Day
weekend, the P&TGFC will host their annual
Football Festival. On May 11th, the P&TG
Residents Society will host its AGM & Social,
both great opportunities to reconnect to our
village community
These well respected and popular Village
organisations, feature significantly in this
edition of VV, both organistions have set out
their position on the FC's floodlight planning
application. I would encourage readers of VV to
read the various articles, and formulate your
own opinion. Remember that both organisations
are dedicated to our community, and do a huge
amount of great work in and for the village.
P&TGRS Seeks Board Members
Do you have an interest and some spare time
you could contribute to the work we do in our
local community in Penn and Tylers Green?
The P&TG Residents Society is looking to attract
new board members, and has a particular
interest in hearing from people who are
enthusiastic about our village, and have skills to
offer, especially management, communication,
charity, secretarial or administrative skills.
For details of the work we do, our annual report
at the centre of this magazine summarises the
range of our activities over the past year.
If you potentially have an interest, why not
come along to our AGM on Continued overleaf
Chepping Wycombe Parish Council
As Chairman of CWPC, I am writing to VV
readers on the recent developments in respect of
the Government thinking on creating a unitary
Council to cover all of Buckinghamshire
On Monday 12th March the Secretary of
State, Sajid Javid, announced in parliament that
he is “minded to” implement Bucks County
Council’s proposal to replace the existing five
councils in Bucks with one single council which
would cover all of Buckinghamshire.
This would be a massive change in the way
local services are delivered to local people. But
is it the best way forward for Bucks residents?
Along with all the other district councils in
Bucks and a large number of the Parishes,
CWPC does not believe that this decision is in
the best interest of our local residents, and
knowing that WDC have discussed this
extensively with local businesses, community
groups, parish councils and other stakeholders
we don’t believe local people do either. The
Bucks Free Press conducted a poll, and from the
comments left on the BFP website, residents
don’t seem to support this option either.
The ‘minded to’ decision announced this
week is not set in stone and the process allows
the District Councils will make the strongest
possible representations to the Secretary of State
that this is not the right decision.
CWPC believe that a single unitary is not the
best solution for Bucks. It fails to recognise the
fundamental economic and demographic
differences between the communities in the
north and south of the county.
We think that a ‘one size fits all’ approach in
Bucks will mean lost opportunities, less
effective services and significantly less local
decision making by and for local people.
We also have serious doubts about the savings
the single unitary model claims it could deliver
and worry that County services will be forced
on Parish Councils to deliver with no extra
funding which will inevitably mean your Parish
precept will have to rise exorbitantly to cover
these extra costs.
The decision isn’t a done deal. Until 25 May
2018 local people can make further
representations to the Secretary of State: email
sajid.javid.mp@parliament.uk. Please copy in
your local MP, steve.baker.mp@parliament.uk
or Cheryl.gillan.mp@parliament.uk
I would like to appeal to all VV readers, that
if you have a view, please write and tell the man
in charge of this decision, what you think is the
best for Bucks. Katrina Wood CWPC Chair
The 49th P&TG Village Show
- Save The Date!
This year’s show will take place on September
15th 2018. The schedule highlights include;
Flowers, fruit and vegetables: New entrants
to the horticulture section can try growing a
cucumber and almost everyone will have one
flower they would like to show off in “my
favourite flower “. Other classes include cacti,
succulents, pot plants, annuals , perennials , a
jam jar of mixed garden flowers, the heaviest
marrow, the fattest marrow (junior) and the
longest runner bean.
Miscellaneous: After positive feedback, we
are again including a class for hen’s eggs and
“five-a-day”, grow a day’s healthy eating.
Branching out from our usual format, we have
introduced a new class to be judged by the
public. Instead of vegetable animals, we are
inviting live entries for The Happiest Pet, a class
for (small) caged pets.
Domestic: The male bakers have been
challenged to make quiche or a coconut and
cherry cake. Open classes include a ““round”
of shortbread and a lemon meringue pie for the
traditionalists and a cake containing at least one
vegetable ingredient, e.g. carrot, courgette,
beetroot etc. or a savoury/sweet pastry. (part
savoury part sweet filling) for the more
adventurous amongst you. Young cooks can
use their imagination and experiment with
different flavours of Swiss rolls or roulades.
Craft: Under 18’s can design and make a tea
light holder. Ideas range from food cans,
painted glass, wood, foraged materials or clay.
You can start from scratch or decorate
something you’ve bought or recycled. There
are lots of ideas out there to get you started.
There is plenty of time for youngsters and
grown-ups alike to get crafty and make a brooch
from natural materials, quilt a wall-hanging,
design and make a coaster, a table runner or a
fabric wreath.
Art and photography: Artists are given free
rein with “1969”, “a splash of colour”, “summer
view or a pencil/pen & ink drawing.
Photographers have plenty of scope too with
classes titled “1969”, “in Penn Woods”,
“machinery” and digitally enhanced work.
Junior photographers can try “all creatures great
and small” and “the sky’s the limit”.
Junior: There are lots of junior classes. If
there’s nothing in your own age group, why not
enter an older age group or the open classes
which are open to everyone. A few of this year’s
classes include the widest sunflower head, an
edible garden in a shoe box lid (use your
imagination), tie dyed tee shirt, cheese straws, a
bug hotel, a mug of home-made popcorn and “a
hungry caterpillar” made from fruit and or veg.
Schedules will be in local shops from the end
of May. A list of classes can be found on the
village website. Please do have a go, there’s a
class for everyone. Gwenda Deadman
Common Wood Working Party
The weekend of 7th and 8th April will be the
last this season and we intend to work in Farther
Barn Field. Gloves, shears, hand saws and a
fork to "tease" the roots of plants would all be
useful as we want to clear the main area of
blackthorn etc. We will meet at 10am on the
chalk path at the top of the Holloway. The
Roundabout Gate will be open for those who
wish to drive. Please drive slowly and with
which will maintain their step 6 status in the
Dear VV,
I am delighted to report that the two quizzes
that took place on Friday 3rd, and Saturday 4th
February were a great success. We raised a
staggering £6,500 for The Motor Beurone Disease
Association over the weekend!
Having taken a break for three years I was a little
in trepidation at reviving the momentum, but the
fantastic support of so many in the village, and
many from further afield, ensured that we more
than carried on where we had last “left off”.
It would be a very long list were I to “shout out”
to everyone who worked so hard, but I am so
grateful to everyone who combined to create a
powerful energy; workers, kind supporters in the
village, the paying customers, almost all of whom
have given the kindest feedback & seem eager to
return on Sat October 13th 2018 for our next Quiz.
I never underestimate the community warmth &
power in this village, for which I am always proud
& grateful. What another fabulous achievement by
the Village Hall!, to be the crucial platform to make
such joy possible. A huge Thank You, and grateful
recognition, of what a marvellous facility we are so
lucky to have here, made possible only by the hard
work & commitment of the team behind the scene,
most of whom are volunteers.
Thank You; what a fabulous community we
have! Ray Stidwell
YOUR LETTERS
Dear VV,
Two years ago I was screened at Wycombe
early detection that really helped in my positive
I disagree that ‘the problem for the Society is
that it is trying to be all things to be all people is
not a realistic proposition’, nor ‘it means it solely
expresses the majority view of the 15 members of
its committee and not that of the community’.
My experience is that the P&TGRS very much
keeps its finger on the pulse by remaining an
integral part of the community, supporting very
worthy and important current projects such as the
Village pre-school and the Village Voice, which
continues to publish local views from both sides
of any discussion under a balanced editorial.
The Society continues to flourish under the
excellent Chairmanship of Miles Green who brings
to the table a balanced wealth of well-informed
knowledge and experience through his
unwavering, voluntary dedication to and
involvement with the wellbeing of those who live
within the area.
Surely better to consider matters in the most
non-partisan way that P&TGRS continue to
represent the local community rather than by a
partisan approach that subscription would
introduce.
As most of my neighbours agree, may we long
continue to live in a community where all local
matters are represented openly and
democratically.
Thank you P& TG RS for continuing to ensure
this possible. Ian Petrie . Elm Road. Penn resident
Dear VV,
I was rather surprised to read Peter Brown’s
recent blog 'Does the P&TG Residents’ Society really
represent the residents?' which attempted to
defame the P&TGRS. In a healthy community such
as Penn & Tylers Green there will always be
differences of opinion over varying issues from
time to time.
P& TGRS have a long history of protecting the
best interests of the community and surroundings
we are privileged to enjoy either as local residents
or as visitors to our village enjoying the local
amenities.
Dear VV,
As the group that has actively campaigned to
prevent Cock Lane from being widened to provide
a through route to the A40, we don't agree with
the view that the Penn & Tylers Green Residents
Society cannot be both a campaigning and a
social group. Our experience over the last 3 years
is that the Residents Society has been a very
powerful voice in the ongoing campaign to
prevent BCC more than doubling the traffic flow
past the Middle School.
We brought our findings and arguments to the
Residents Society. Whilst they opposed the
widening of Cock Lane, they did not think it was
possible to stop the connection of the Spine road
and the through route. We did - and they listened.
They were persuaded by the strength of our
arguments and the factual case we had put
together. They then led the Continued overleaf
Village Voice April/May 2018
meetings we had with WDC on the issue, giving the
issue more credibility as a Village wide concern.
The Residents Society have brought together
many stakeholders to discuss and consider the
Ashwells Planning Application, where many
different views get expressed. The various groups
in the Residents Society Forum on Ashwells
represent and provide feedback from the circa 150
households most directly affected by the
development. Moreover, they provide a link to the
rest of the village through articles in the Village
Voice. We do not agree that the Residents Society
does not try to represent the whole community.
They have acted as facilitators to formulate a
‘Village view’ on this and the Cock Lane issue. They
have certainly been much more proactive in raising
and expressing residents' concerns than any of our
local Councillors.
We cannot see any other body that can sensibly
represent a wider view for ‘ the village’. This process
relies on people coming forward, expressing their
views in reasoned ways and influencing opinions.
To help this happen, we suggest that the Residents
Society, with Peter Brown’s help on his Village blog,
should consider more ways of using the Internet to
encourage and collect opinions from villagers on
controversial issues. Cohesion in relation to
planning would also be helped if our village had
one Local Authority and not two. We suggest the
Residents Society petition the Boundary
Commission to change the current situation where
the Penn & Tylers Green community is split
between two Parish Councils, one part of Wycombe
District and one part of Chiltern District. Den
Winterburn, Gerry King, Martin Wood
Dear VV,
In response to the question asked by a new P&TG
resident in the last VV issue, both myself & friend/
neighbour, Helen Lampen do have an appetite for
rubbish clearing!
Being a dog owner, I walk the streets, fields &
woods of P&TG with Helen, and we continuously
comment on the amount of rubbish we see that the
council, disappointingly have no interest in
clearing.
So... enough talking and instead action is what
we decided ! We purchased a litter picker each and
some bin liners and started work this week. We
have so far dedicated 5 hours of our time litter
picking in Ashley Drive, part of
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Continued above
St. Johns Road, Church Road, Elm Road and
School Road, and on our round chatted with
another resident who informed us that she & her
husband litter pick on Sundays at Potter Cross,
New Road & the Pond area.
Our big challenge will be tackling
Commonwood Lane, Penn Bottom, Crown Lane &
Noaks Lane as the amount of litter that has
accumulated in the hedgerows is beyond belief.
We may have to campaign to the Council to help,
as these roads have no pavements, so safety will
be an issue. The same of course will apply to
Hammersley Lane where our new resident lives.
We have gratefully received appreciation from
other residents on our rounds which of course
makes it all worthwhile, and so far have filled five
bin liners, the bulk of which are sweet wrappers,
cigarette ends, cigarette packets, drink cans,
drink bottles and food packaging. Yesterday, we
came across a council van parked up by the pond
and the driver kindly agreed to take the bags of
rubbish away, so at least they haven't taken up
space in our home bins.
Please feel free to pass on my email details to
our new resident, or any other interested
residents if they would like to join forces with
Helen & I. Kind regards, Jane Seymour Elm Rd. Penn
I was shocked by the vitriol in Peter Brown's
Blog "Does the Residents Society really represent
the residents?"
Penn and Tylers Green is a Conservation Area
- one of the many reasons residents like living
here and others travel from far and wide to visit.
The clearly stated aims of the Residents Society
are i) promotion of high standards of planning
and architecture ii) preservation, protection and
development and improvement of historic
architecture and iii) protection, conservation and
promotion of the countryside - sometimes
thankless tasks that are undertaken by the
Residents Society on behalf of us all.
I've lived in Penn for 22 years and am thankful
for the work put in by the Residents Society so
that I, other residents and visitors can continue to
enjoy the unique beauty of this village I call
home. Long may they continue!!"
You can print my name - I Wilkes, Proud
resident of Penn. Best regards, Ian Wilkes
CHURCH NEWS
Holy Trinity & St Margaret's
Things do not change! There is a lovely passage
in the Bible about how hard it is to tame the
tongue (James 3). It is likened to a ship that is
steered by such a small rudder or a spark that
can start a huge fire in a forest. Although Easter
and Lent are past it does not mean that we can
let go of those good habits that we had been
working on. They make us easier to live with!
Whenever we have a school class visit Holy
Trinity I always stop them in the churchyard
and ask if they can see anything unusual about
the clock on the tower. It is surprisingly hard to
spot that it only has one hand (until it is pointed
out of course). I tell the children that it harks
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
back to a slightly less busy and pressurised age.
However, over the winter, they would have seen
that the clock face and hand were missing. The
old wooden face had rotted and needed to be
replaced. We are grateful for the good work of
Edward Stuart of Curbridge and the support of
the Penn Trust. If you are passing Holy Trinity
in the near future, do stop and admire the new
clock face on the tower. Something I learned
through this was that the letters and hand have
to be gold leaf. Anything else will tarnish over
time. The clock face itself, of necessity, has to
be painted, although it is special paint that
should last. I had the scary privilege of a trip in
the ‘cherry picker’ for a closer look.
I see from the diary that April and May are
quiet months in the church calendar. Pentecost
is Sunday 20th May where we remember the
pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the believers
huddled in the Upper Room after the crucifixion
and resurrection. It signifies the birthday of the
church and last year I made cakes in the shape
over 330,000 soldiers at Dunkirk in 1940.
Immediately following the showing Professor
God in the affairs of nations. All are welcome.
The meeting will last around 80 minutes, and
By the time you read this, Easter will have
come and gone. Easter is still one of those
times when many people turn to the church as
part of their celebration of the weekend. If you
did so, perhaps for the first time in a long time, I
hope you found warmth and blessing amongst
the church family, whichever church it was. If
so, why not try it again! All the local churches
in Penn and Tylers Green have a range of
SCHOOLS
NEWS ROUND UP
Village Voice April/May 2018
Tylers Green Middle School
Engineering Week 2018: This term at TGMS,
we have been considering the promotion of
STEM to all of our pupils. Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics are subjects that
perhaps wouldn’t all be associated with children
aged 7-11. However, we felt that our pupils are
fully capable of pursuing future careers in these
exciting disciplines, if they knew how.
In January, we had a very exciting
Engineering Week at TGMS. On the Monday
we learnt about some famous engineers and
about a national competition called the Primary
Engineer Leaders Award. Our parents/governors
with engineering backgrounds were invited to
be involved, so on the Tuesday four real life
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
engineers came into school to talk about their
work. Year 3 did some engineering using
balloons. On Wednesday we took some of the
good ideas that we had seen and designed our
own engineering project. The teachers even did
a design too! On Thursday we wrote a
persuasive letter to encourage the judges to
choose our design. Friday was the last day of
Science Week and we had Dr Who; a fictional
engineer come into school to meet us. Tom even
got to wear the real multi-coloured coat that was
worn during filming! Mr Colin Baker gave out
school awards and all the projects will also be
sent off to be judged by a national panel.
We are excited to announce that we are taking
part in the Regional Primary Engineering
Leaders Award which is designed to challenge
Nursery, Primary and Secondary pupils in our
area to research engineering, interview inspiring
engineers and interpret the question, If you were
an engineer – what would you do?”
The Leaders Award 2018 aims to:
• Introduce school pupils to the
world of engineering in all its
diversity.
• Inspire school pupils by the
creativity of engineering.
• Enthrall school pupils by
providing opportunities to interview
engineers.
• Stimulate school pupils’ creative
and problem-solving skills
• Encourage school pupils’ STEM
and artistic potential.
• Enhance school pupils’ literacy
and enjoyed drawing picture of Venice and
making Venetian masks. The classes all had a
wide range of practical activities to explore and
a great time was had by all.
We have had class assemblies which the
children enjoyed working towards, as their
parents can see them in action telling the school
what they have been learning this term.
We were due to enjoy World Book Day when
unfortunately the snow came along and closed
the school for two days. This was rescheduled
to the 6th March when the children (and staff)
came to school dressed as their favourite
character from a book.
Some of the children will have a chocolate
workshop where they get to learn about
chocolate and actually make their own
chocolate to take home with them. A chocolatier
comes and works with the children for this. As
you can imagine this day is really full of
excitement and anticipation.
Year 2 will have a trip to the local golf course
for a morning to experience some activities
related to golf. This activity has been very
much enjoyed in previous years.
We had Easter competitions at the end of term
and enjoyed seeing the very creative ideas for
Easter bonnets, decorated eggs and Easter
gardens. The children always work hard on their
chosen entry and some are amazingly creative.
We are looking forward to spring and summer
activities such as Maypole Dancing and Sports
Days next term as well as producing vegetables
and flowers this year, and class trips. We look
forward to using our outdoor areas without
having to wear coats, hats and gloves all the
P&TG
FOOTBALL CLUB
Dear VV Readers,
In the last edition of VV, a letter was printed
about the Football Club from “name and
address” supplied. That letter, we believe,
contained false information, mischevious
misleading comments and omitted relevant
information. This has caused major upset to our
membership and the wider village community,
and we would like to respond as follows:
'The P&TG Football club has a proud
tradition of serving the village and its
surrounding areas, and has done so for the last
112 years. Sadly, in recent years, a minority in
the village, have gone out of their way to try and
dismantle those 112 years of service to the
community by representing what we see are
outdated, sometimes insular views and seem to
default by objecting to everything we try to do
as a club for the community we serve.
In making our planning application, we did
not set out to indulge our senior teams but to
maintain the status at the top of the football
pyramid which is realistic and achievable for
this club, so that junior players can progress
through the club in a friendly, safe environment.
Our players are coached by unpaid volunteers
who are qualified coaches.
Our aim is to provide the opportunity for
players to progress through the junior ranks,
play for our senior teams and thus remain as
part of this community.
The First Team of P&TGFC have won their
league for the last two years and the Reserves
have won the County Cup twice three and four
years ago (not to mention the titles won by
various of our junior sections, boys and girls)
If our senior team is relegated because we do
not have floodlights, then the club’s status
within the pyramid becomes less attractive to
players looking to stay and play football at this
club. In the football world our name is one
treated with respect and, in some quarters, envy.
Our facilities are complimented by all who visit.
We are humbly proud of these achievements.
We plan to appeal the decision to turn down
our application, the result which was achieved
by the Planning Committee Chairman’s casting
vote - so not unanimously rejected.
Here, we would like to set out to the readers
of VV exactly what we are trying to achieve,
and what measures we have put in place to
minimise the impact of floodlights - respecting
the environment we live in, whilst achieving the
requirements that the FA rules require.
I hope I have managed to convince those who
have been in opposition to our plans, to
reconsider their views, as a result of better
The Facts:
• The new FC lights would be much lower than
the existing training floodlights already in place
• The FC themselves advocated a restricted
usage condition of 9 hours per week
• The lights would be used approx. 5% potential
usage of total hours per week
• Some weeks there would be no floodlight
games at all, so zero usage
• In the summer months from mid-May to the
end of August, zero usage as well
• The Tennis Club flood lights are potentially in
use 6 nights a week - the FC lights would be less
• There will be no change to the club’s facilities,
or increased usage
• The new floodlights would not be used for
mid-week training
• The floodlight specifications are for the most
neighbour friendly retractable floodlights - and
in consequence - the most expensive
• It is FA rules driving this application, otherwise
we would not be instigating such a financial
burden on the club. We have argued our case at
FA meetings without success over the years
• The floodlights we want to install are “AONB
We are fortunate to live in P&TG, the village
has a wide range of village clubs, societies and
the FC has delivered a great deal of value to our
the support of the village residents.
Planning Application
All at the Penn & Tylers Green FC, many
village residents, and the wider community
were left deflated and dejected on 22nd
February when Chiltern DC’s planning
committee rejected their floodlights application
The application was turned down because of
the perceived damage the floodlights would do
to a few historical cottages along Elm Road
which back onto the football ground. The
committee did not take any notice of the
restrictions proposed by the FC to limit usage to
5% (nine hours) of total hours in any given
week. Chairman Tony Hurst commented:
“This is the first such meeting I have been to
and my first impression is one of a perceived
pre-determined decision made by certain
councillors before the meeting commenced. An
example of this was one councillor, who
represents Holmer Green Ward , who lives three
doors down from the football club and is vice
chairman of the committee, declared an interest
before the meeting, then actually voted against
the application. Legally, he is entitled to do that.
However, we believe the moral, just and proper
decision of this councillor should have been to
abstain from the vote. He chose to vote and in
effect his vote won the day as the vote was all
even at three all, so the chairman used his
casting vote to dismiss our application. He
could not have been quicker to “slam down the
hammer” to reject our application”
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice April/May 2018
We would like to publicly thank the three
councillors who rallied to our cause but have no
regard for the utterly biased and insulting input
from our two CDC councillors, who
incidentally, live in Coleshill and Chesham
respectively, so for the P&TGRS to mention
post codes attributable to our supporters as “a
negative” is rather hypocritical and ironic.
We were very disappointed with the statement
read out at the meeting by the Chairman of the
P&TGRS which we consider to be inaccurate
and totally misleading (for example he said:
“with 28 teams playing on most days of the
week”) which we consider to be a blatantly false
and misleading statement. There were many
more included in the statement.which can be
found on the P&TGRS website.
We were equally disappointed with the
statement read out by the Parish Council which
varied in contents from the conclusion of an
earlier public Parish Council planning meeting
which the FC representatives attended. We were
told by a reliable source a few days before the
meeting that this could not happen, so we are
perplexed at this development on the night.
We have been overwhelmed by the level of
support we have received from many Penn
residents, local papers, local radio, BBC Radio
and the footballing community as a whole.
I would like to personally and humbly thank
those who have sent messages already as they
have been a source of immense reassurance for
us and I thank you all in advance for any further
support forthcoming. Please, please keep it
coming. Tony Hurst, Chairman Penn & Tylers Green FC
P&TGFC PLANNING
APPLICATION - THE
P&TGRS POSITION
As Chairman of the
Penn & Tylers Green
Residents Society
(P&TGRS) I want to
set out the RS position
relating to the Football
Club’s floodlights
planning application. Much has been said
and written about this application, in
various media, and it is important to
remember that both the FC and the RS
have a common goal - and that is to
preserve and serve our community...
I would firstly like to make it clear that the RS
has no power to reject any planning application.
That is the role of the District Council, as the
Planning Authority. The RS can only comment
on any planning application.
This was a difficult application (to consider)
because the Football Club is a very considerable
success story, contributing outstanding work to
our community, with youngsters, keeping them
active and fit, and involving parents and many
volunteers.
It started as a village team playing on a single
muddy pitch on a Saturday afternoon. No lights,
no facilities. 40 years ago, you would hardly
noticed that the Club was there. Since then it
has grown steadily to some 800 members with
28 teams, with playing or training most days of
the week. It's success has resulted in it being
something more than a purely village Club, as
many of the players and supporters are from
outside Penn & Tylers Green.
The Planning application came about because
the FC now requires floodlights to stay in the
FA Step 6 and they would like to progress to
Step 5, which would require covered
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice April/May 2018
accommodation for 200 spectators of which at
least 100 must be seated. Historically, the FC
has, in good faith, claimed that its various
planning applications would not result in
increased activity. In 2012, the FC wrote to
residents stating it would not seek floodlights.
Inevitably, growing numbers have brought more
games and more training with increasing impact
from noise, lights and parking.
If this highly successful Club was almost
anywhere else, there could be no argument
about supporting its application, but it is the
Club's misfortune to face a combination of
AONB, Green Belt, Conservation Area, Listed
buildings and a no street-lighting policy.
12 years ago, a formal appraisal of the
combined Penn & Tylers Green Conservation
Area, was conducted, and adopted by WDC.
Buildings, their architecture, history and setting
were examined. The Front Common with its
large pond surrounded by listed buildings and
cottages, was recognised as the focal point of
the village. Its careful conservation and setting
matters to many people.
The Historic Building Consultant concluded
that there was no question that the proposed FC
floodlights would be harmful to the setting of
the listed buildings and the Conservation Area
and that the public benefit did not outweigh that
harm. The Chiltern Society, Chiltern
Conservation Board, CPRE and Parish Council,
all with long experience of planning
applications, came to the same conclusion, and
all objected to the application.
Expansion has its limits and at some stage
there does need to be an acceptance that further
growth is not possible.
Whether the RS had the backing of local
residents has been questioned. The planning
officer's report noted the strength of opposition
to the application, but planning decisions are
based on planning law and not popularity.
As Chair of the P&TGRS I would like to
reiterate that the RS has no power to reject this,
or any other planning application, but it is
entitled to an opinion. Miles Green
SPORTS
NEWS ROUND UP
P&TG Lawn Tennis Club
Snow Tennis: It’s been a difficult time since
Christmas with the weather not being conducive
to a lot of tennis. A number of matches were
rained off in January and re-fixed for March
only for the ‘Beast from the East’ to intervene.
Mind you, the new courts are proving much
better at coping with bad weather with, as can
be seen in the photo below, Club Coach Neil
James not allowing a little snow to prevent him
holding his regular Saturday coaching sessions.
Indeed the new court surface is proving very
popular with the club attracting a number of
new members while existing members are
finding the wear and tear on their limbs much
less intense than with the old hard courts. It’s a
good time to join with the new membership
year starting in April so why not give it a go and
On the subject of weather, the annual old vs
young matches were both (men and ladies) hit
by the weather and postponed over the
Christmas period. The oldie men, however,
cunningly re-arranged the match for mid-
January just after a number of the members of
the young team had returned to university. Some
are calling the resultant victory (the second year
on the trot) for the oldies somewhat hollow. I
would not like to comment. A picture of the
victorious oldie team is attached –not sure about
P&TG Cricket Club
Easter has fallen early this year so while we can
anticipate cold hands and heavy sweaters in the
early weeks of the season, it will still feel good
to get out on the field of play once more.
Two dates for your Diary:
1) Quiz Night, April 14th at the Village Hall.
Contact Andy Francis on andy@esmbranding.
2) Registration Evening, Friday April 20th at
the Sports & Social Club
Before venturing outside however, we will be
getting back into the swing of things with some
indoor-net practice. This year, we have moved
to the excellent new indoor facilities at the
Amersham School and will be there on
Wednesday evenings in April from 7-9pm. So if
you are new to the village and would like to
play some cricket this summer, you’ll be sure of
a warm welcome at any of these evenings.
Work on the square will begin in March/April
and the outfield will receive its first few cuts
during this time too. We will be inviting as
many playing and non-playing Club members
to join us at the Club on the morning of
Saturday 14th April to bring the facilities out of
hibernation – with plenty of jobs to do including
assembling the pitch covers, cleaning/
positioning the sight-screens and giving the
down and join the fun?
All this is in readiness for the new season
which kicks off in late-April with a couple of
warm-up fixtures ahead of a busy league season
as our 1st XI aim to return to their leaguewinning
form of 2016.
At the Junior level, we have entered 4 sides
into the Bucks Leagues at the following
age-groups: U9, U10/11, U12 and U13/14. The
purpose of our involvement is to provide
opportunities for young players to learn about
the game and to develop their skills at their own
pace. Coaching nights for U10+ will take place
on Wednesdays this year, and we are delighted
to announce a partnership with “Future
Legends”, a respected cricket-coaching
organization, which will provide a beneficial
experience for our young players.
Off the field, we will be organising several
fund-raising initiatives throughout the season.
The first of these is a Quiz Night, being held at
the Village Hall on Saturday 14th April, open to
anybody, and which will feature teams of 8
people (£40 per team), exciting prizes and a
cash-bar. If you would like to book a table,
please contact Andy Francis at andy@
yourself or on behalf of your sons or daughters,
you can get in touch with either Matt Lance at
lancey5@hotmail.com (adults) or ptgcccolts@
gmail.com (juniors).
As with any village club or society, our
success relies heavily on the hard work of all the
volunteers who make everything run smoothly.
There is always more that we want to do and it
is impossible to have too many volunteers so if
you want to join the fun and help in any way
(maybe as a match-scorer or umpire), we would
be delighted to hear from you and you will
receive a warm welcome from everyone
The Village Pre-school
The start of the school term back in September,
we welcomed a large intake of 2 year olds,
having seen many of our children leave in July
to start ‘big’ school. We have policies and
procedures in place to enable these very young
children to settle in easily and enjoy a
curriculum dedicated specifically to their age
group, and we’re happy to report, they are all
thriving. Our 30 hour per week setting is
working well and has proved to be very popular
with parents of the older children in preparation
for their transition to primary school.
We have managed to secure a partnership
with Tesco and are now part of their ‘FairShare
Scheme’ which allocates unsold but in date
goods to charitable causes – we are eligible for
Bakery and Fruit & Veg. We have also formed a
relationship with the Community Champion at
Tesco Amersham, who has a budget for
Charities and now supplies us with 100 pieces
of fruit every week for our snack table as well
as providing ingredients for cooking. We are
fortunate to have a very active Parents
Committee supporting the pre-school by raising
funds for extra activities such as our end of year
trip to Beale Park, Reading and our Sports Day
party in Ashley Drive Park with a bouncy castle.
We are very fortunate to have professional
and experienced team of staff led by Nicky
Lovegrove and Lesley Routledge.
Woodlands
A second thinning was carried out in the
Gravelly Way Plantation in 2017, resulting in an
income from timber sales of some £3,700. We
received a grant of nearly £3,000 from the
Forestry Commission under their woodland
grant scheme for providing open access to
Common Wood, and a contribution of £900
from the Penn Area Bridleways Association
from their voluntary permit scheme, designed to
provide maintenance funding for Common
Wood. Consequently, despite the costs of some
tree safety work and the annual £1,750
depreciation cost of the Common Wood Lease,
the Woods & Greens Account showed a healthy
surplus of nearly £3,700 for the year, compared
with the nearly £2,600 deficit the previous year.
Earthwork enclosure - some thinning of trees
around the embankment has been undertaken to
prevent their roots undermining the banks. A
group of volunteers continues to meet the first
weekend of each month throughout the winter
to do routine maintenance works.
Penn School Working Group
It is well over two years since Penn School
closed and there is still no certainty about the
future of the site.
In April 2017 the DfE failed to approve any
of the free school applications submitted in
September 2016 and since then there has been
little progress. The site is one of a number of
properties owned by the DfE that are currently
unallocated as a site for a new school.
The good news is that any talk of opening a
secondary school on the site has largely
evaporated and a change in education leadership
at Bucks CC now seems to favour reopening a
special school on the site and using it as a centre
of excellence for special needs teaching.
As a result of extensive lobbying it is now
accepted that the SEND provision within Bucks
is at capacity with 280 young people being
educated out of the county and so it is possible
that Penn School may be seen as part of a
solution to that problem.
It’s a waiting game with the outcome
uncertain and in the current climate it is still
possible that the DfE will decide to dispose of
the site for commercial redevelopment.
planning another event in December 2018.
We live in an area where much of the
landscape is designated Green Belt and is also
part of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty. We have a Conservation Area at
the heart of the villages with many listed
buildings. This of course does not mean that in
planning terms life is made any easier because,
to preserve and protect these designations,
difficult choices often have to be made.
We only comment on significant local
planning applications which could affect the
wider community and strive to maintain a
balance between progress and conservation. The
designations referred to carry considerable
weight in determining our approach, in which
we endeavour to remain consistent. We cannot
“cherry pick”. Examples of planning
applications on which we have commented in
the past year where location in GB and AONB
is the primary concern are those at Fieldgrove
Nursery and Pennoak Farm in Hammersley
Lane and the site of the Football Club grounds
in Elm Road. We continue to monitor the
position with Penn School.
Pressure to develop more housing is
considerable and much effort has been made in
reviewing Local Plans and commenting on
Green Belt development options put forward by
both WDC and CDC. At this stage we are
pleased there is a clear reluctance by both
councils to see the ‘horse fields’ in Penn and
Hazlemere Road succumb to major
development on this Green Belt and AONB site
adjacent to Common Wood. The final outcome
remains subject to approval of the New Local
Plans for WDC and CDC by the Planning
Inspectorate.
In February, 2017 the Government published
its White Paper ‘Fixing Our Broken Housing
Market’ heralding a new method for calculating
housing need which will likely put more
pressure on Local Authorities to deliver more
housing. Changes to the NPPF are imminent
reflecting this. New Local Plans have yet to be
agreed 4 years after the process started. The RS
continues to engage at a senior level with both
District Councils on significant planning and
highway issues with the support of members of
our Parish Councils, local residents and our
District and County Councillors.
Ashwells/Gomm Valley
Our Ashwells Forum brings together all those
with a particular interest in the development of
Ashwells and Gomm Valley. We have been
actively involved throughout the year
commenting on the Development Brief for
Ashwells, WDC's Local Plan, and very recently,
the outline application for Ashwells. This has
involved frequent communication and several
meetings with WDC's senior planning team, the
County Highway Authority, and the WDC
Property Manager who is supervising the
development plans being drawn up by Savills.
We also invited the WDC Head of Sustainability
and Planning to address our AGM last year.
Our principal concern is that a widened Cock
lane connected directly to the London Road,
would bring a very considerable increase in
traffic through the village. Regular updates
have been provided throughout the year in VV.
P&TGRS Finance Report
2017 saw the RS back to generating a surplus,
with Unrestricted Funds growing by over
£13,000 to £66,500, due primarily to low levels
of donations made in the year while Village
Voice generated a surplus of around £16,000.
The woodlands made nearly £4,000 surplus
thanks to income from sale of timber, a grant
from the Forestry Commission and an increased
contribution from PABA for horse riding
permits. The Village Preschool had a more
difficult year with a large transfer of children to
school resulting in a reduction of fee income of
some £10,000, and a consequent deficit of just
over £4,000. However, the numbers have
already been made up and the current year is
looking good.
Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG)
In 2017/2018, the priorities chosed by the NAG
where chosen to reflect the concerns of the
community. These included:
• Speeding/Road Safety: The NAG was
instrumental in obtaining MVAS (Moveable
Vehicle Activated Signs) within the CWPC
area. Considerable work has been put in by
members of NAG and local volunteers into
collecting data from these and producing
spreadsheets and plotting trends. This and other
statistical data has been sent regularly to the
police in order to inform where to optimally
place laser speed guns and mobile camera vans.
• Antisocial Behaviour/Criminal Damage:
The figures on crime over the last year have
been varied. Theft of motor vehicles and
burglary from dwellings was up, whilst theft
from motor vehicles and non-dwelling burglary
reduced. The importance of crime reporting at
the NAG meetings was stressed by the police
because it has enabled them to deal with
problems early or in prevention.
• Parking: It has been noted that inconsiderate
parking such as on pavements has become an
increasing problem. The NAG has been looking
at this escalating issue and plan to create an
Action Plan in association with the police.
• “Legal Highs”: The law has recently
changed with the result of making these
psychoactive substances illegal. The NAG have
had concerns because of the reported increase in
use and the lack of information available to both
teenagers and adults. It formed a small working
party including the police, Addaction (a large
charity involved with drug and alcohol abuse),
and a NAG member, to try and address this
problem. As a result, an information bus, set up
by Addaction has visited a number of sites
including a presence at the Hazlemere Fair. The
latter was a particularly successful event. There
was a high footfall with very positive feedback.
We were visited by the Boys Brigade and ATC
who have asked for sessions to be delivered to
staff and young people. At the moment this
initiative is on hold because of re-organisation
and management issues with Addaction. These
have now however been addressed and
hopefully further visits will be arranged in the
near future.
• Cyber Crime/Fraud: NAG have been
concerned because of the increasing numbers of
reports especially from elderly residents. With
the help of the police, simple steps to stay safe
online have been issued.
Membership - The P&TGRS is a charitable
held to be all the residents of the “Tylers Green
notify the Secretary that they do not wish to be).
Members are entitled to attend or to have their
meeting; they are also encouraged to express
their views on the P&TGRS website: www.
WOODLAND
& GREEN SPACES
During this period of early
spring it is fairly quiet in
the wood and the heavy
rains and melting
snow have turned
parts of wood liquid
underfoot. This
usually creates a
problem where walkers
with inappropriate
footwear start avoiding the
mud and widening the paths destroying much of
the understory. What may have been a very
narrow track during the summer turns into a
wide morass. I'm often asked why we don't
improve the paths but we do have to remember
it is a wood and not a town. During wet weather
there are plenty of hardened paths for walkers
and cyclists. Even though the paths may be only
gravelled they are not cheap.
We have a problem where motorcyclists
have reappeared in the wood and the last
intrusion was on Saturday, March 10 , late
afternoon. The motorbike was a very bright
green and white with 2 people. If anyone has
any information about them we would be
grateful to receive it.
The work party at the beginning of February
opened a gap in the field and cleared away
number of tree guards. There is more to do and
this will be the focus of the work party on April
7th and 8th. Everybody's welcome. We only ask
that you give us a couple of hours, bring heavy
gloves to handle thorny bushes and a pair of
loppers or pruning saw. The objective is to clear
the field of scrub. Ideally we would like to have
the field grazed again and we are looking at
ways of achieving this. Using cattle is the best
way as their feet open up the surface of the soil
for seed to germinate. We are unable to hold a
work party at the beginning of March as all as
supervisors had other commitments but if you
are interested in helping us send an email to
commonwoodvolunteer@gmail.com and ask to
be notified of future activities.
We have to thank the Chiltern heavy horses
for bringing in Samuel, a 7-year-old Shire
horse, to drag some of the logs of the enclosure.
We hope to use him again to finish off however
there are plans to move them to Devon at some
point later this year so we may not get this
opportunity again. If anyone out there has a
heavy horse willing to pull logs we can
certainly make use of them occasionally. We
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Photographs (this page): Eddie Morton
have been doing a bit of thinning and will
hopefully have some firewood to sell later in the
year. We are looking for some form of trailer
which would hopefully take one or two builders
bags to deliver the logs.
Quite a bit of tree safety work was carried out
after the storms and snow resulting in the
diversion of a path. Thanks go to Andy our
volunteer tree surgeon who had to do rather a
lot of climbing with the help of a few of us on
the ground using ropes and winches to pull out
some rather large limbs which got hung up in
the tops of trees. Andy is seen here appraising a
rather large branch which could: drop onto one
of the main paths.
I was recently asked by a widow if she could
scatter her husband's ashes in the wood, and I
readily agreed. This is not the 1st and I don't
think it will be the last time I'm asked about this.
There are many people who enjoy the wood and
it's only fitting that they be allowed to have it as
the last resting place. If you have a similar
request please contact me and I will do my best
to accommodate you. I just need to know when
something is happening. Similarly if you want
to hold an event please ask me first. We try to
accommodate all requests but there are
questions of things like insurance and possibility
of clashing with other events going on and the
protection of wildlife in general which have to
be taken into consideration.
One thing I am pleased to report is that we
hope to acquire an additional 11 acres of
woodland fronting Common Wood Lane closest
to the village. This will secure access for the
future. I hope to confirm this in the next issue.
ASHWELLS
OUTLINE PLANNING
APPLICATION
The Ashwells Forum held a useful meeting on
13 February with the applicants represented by
the head of WDC's Major Projects and Estates
Executive and by Savills who had prepared and
submitted the outline application. We discussed
numerous detailed concerns, particularly our
insistence that Cock Lane should only be
widened as far down as the new lower access,
and that access for construction traffic through
the existing Ashwells should be avoided or at
least restricted to the very minimum. There was
also considerable discussion about the
feasibility of achieving lower cost /shared equity
housing specifically for locals. We pointed out
that much work was needed on footpaths
around the site and leading to the village (Bucks
County Council has since spelled out in some
detail the requirements for these
improvements), called for adequate car parking
on site and discussed their proposals for Middle
School parking and traffic calming for New
Road.
Following the meeting, the Forum met again
to agree our comments. They were divided
into two parts - Part 1 covered the wider
points such as those mentioned above, and
Part 2 covered roads and traffic, with a
strong focus on preventing the widening of
Cock Lane. The records of the two Forum
meetings can be found on the P&TGRS
website.
I was given the following information by
Robert Harrison, the Principal Development
Management Officer for the scheme: 'In
theory, the target date for a recommendation
by Planning Officers to Council, probably
via the Planning Committee, is 6 April, but
critically, we are still waiting for the County
Highway Authority consultation response.
Work has begun on the review of the site and its
conformity with the Development Plan having
regard to consultee responses. This work cannot
be completed until the County Highway
Authority has formally responded. Initial
evidence suggests that amendments will be
required to the application. This is not unusual
for larger schemes. Therefore, we are unlikely to
proceed directly to determination of the
application. As is normal practice at Wycombe
we will begin a dialogue with the land owner
(via Savills) to address any issues between us.
Depending on the nature of any changes,
further consultation with local residents may be
undertaken, but this cannot be guaranteed at
this time.'
The timetable for determining the Ashwells
application is also linked to the three other
applications, to which it now been joined as a
consequence of its affordable housing strategy
(i.e. the residential scheme at Bellfield Road, the
business scheme at Bellfield Road and the
residential scheme at Desborough Road).
Once the outline application is agreed, work
starts on a section 106 agreement covering
financial contribution on roads, FPs, affordable
homes, various conditions etc. A reserve
matters application covering the detail of design
and development of each plot is likely to be
submitted in about a year from now. Miles Green
THE COTTAGE
BOOKSHOP 1950-2018
The closure of the Cottage Bookshop has been
an agonising decision which occupied my
thoughts for many months and made very
reluctantly, but the recent figures made the
outcome inevitable. I have read all the
comments on Facebook and realise it is a shock
to all my customers who I would like to thank
for their support over the years.
The shop has managed to kept open as long
as it has due to the superb assistance and help
from all my staff and I want to wholeheartedly
take this opportunity to thank them.
The shop has been open for 68 years, playing
an important part in the life of the village and
serving the community throughout this time.
Fred Baddeley, my late stepfather, arranged
to display two dozen of his grandfather’s books
on the staircase of the shop where Fred Baker,
the cobbler, traded from and
lived in the cottage. On
the first day 12 books
were sold at 1/- each.
A year later the
cottage was offered
for sale and Mr.
Baddeley purchased
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice April/May 2018
the property, gave up his job at local building
society and opened the premise as The Cottage
Bookshop. The original part of the cottage dates
back to the 18th Century with extensions being
added over the years, doubling the size of the
shop. Nowadays it has a stock of approximately
70,000 books and customers find themselves in
a maze with floor to ceiling bookshelves
containing books on every conceivable subject.
Our customers come not only from all parts
of the UK but from many parts of the world,
spending an hour or maybe a whole day as they
look for that special book of memories or a
particular one to add to their collection.
Fred passed away in 1993 and Wendy, his
daughter, inherited the business continuing to
trade very much in the way her father had done
until she passed away in 2003. I kept the shop
open, supported by five members of Staff who
covered the weekdays between them.
Over the years the shop has hosted two
episodes of Midsomer Murders, namely ‘A Tale
of Two Hamlets’ and ‘A Rare Bird.’
Blue Peter made two programmes at the shop.
The first one involved Terry Pratchett who, as a
boy, had visited the shop. The occasion was the
launch of his latest children’s book at that time,
namely ‘Johnny and the Bomb.’ Some years
later Gillian Baverstock, the older of Enid
Blyton’s two daughters, took part in a
programme commemorating the 100th
anniversary of her mother’s birth.
The children’s entertainers, The
Chuckle Brothers, recorded an
episode at the shop and invited us
to join them for the second day of
filming to be held at the Tylers
Green Village Hall. As pyrotechnics
were to be involved, it seemed wise
to not use the Cottage Bookshop!
The village hall suited the purpose
and a set was created which
mirrored the bookshop with great
accuracy.
The shop with its rich history will
be very much missed. Allan Campbell
CLUBS
& SOCIETIES
Guides, Brownies & Rainbows
This half term, Rainbows have welcomed a
number of new girls to the unit and a new
volunteer helper. One of their first activities was
to do a portrait of one of their new friends. The
portraits were great. They also completed their
first challenge badge of 2018 to celebrate
Chinese New Year! They had to complete four
challenges. The first challenge was to make
“happy” envelopes where everybody wrote little
notes to each other. Then there was: Pin the tail
on the dog; Chinese fans and finally to complete
the challenge they ate Chinese food!
1st Brownies have been very busy since
January. The girls have enjoyed completing
their designer badge. They enjoyed an indoor
camp fire with hot chocolate and marshmallows
where they had great fun cooking chocolate
brownies! The girls have also been busy with
craft activities and are looking forward to
making Mother’s Day and Easter decorations.
The Guides as well as Trefoil Guild (adult
guiding) are taking part in the Trefoil 75th
Birthday Challenge. There are 7 clauses and for
one challenge the Guides invited members of
Trefoil to their meeting to talk about their time
in Guiding. Many memories and photos were
shown to the Guides. Some of the other
challenges for the Guides include an evening
making mocktails and sewing a corsage.
Adult Guiding had an inspiring talk from a
Guide Leader and her daughter who had visited
the Guide World Centre in Sangham, India.
Both wore the national costume and the
members sung and played a game they had
learnt from Guiders around the world - a
wonderful experience that Guiding offers to its
members. This was also part of the 75th
Birthday Challenge and the celebration of
Thinking Day on 22nd February when we
remember 10 million members in the world in
145 Countries. Sue Stephens
The group is always on the lookout for helpers.
We really do need some new people. I am sure
there are people out there in Penn & Tylers
Green and beyond who would be just right but
don’t know it yet. If you know someone who
32 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
you think would be good, please give them a
nudge, that may be all they are waiting for.
Being a helper or leader is a very rewarding
role. Like new helpers we are always looking
for new youngsters to join the group. Be that as
a beaver, cub or scout. Please contact us and an
application to join can be requested.
Jumble. Look out for our Spring Jumble Sale
on Saturday 21st April at the Village Hall.
Doors open at 1.00 pm (open Friday evening
for receiving jumble 6.00pm to 9.00pm). If
anyone can spare some time Friday or Saturday
we would really appreciate your help. Please see
posters around the village nearer the time. We
hope to see loads of keen bargain hunters on the
day. It is always a good sale with loads of high
quality “jumble”. Paul Wicks, 07879 66824,
Morning WI
During February we enjoyed a fish and chip
lunch at the Horse and Jockey, and weather
permitting hope to have another craft meeting
when, if any homework has been done our
pieces of embroidery could be framed into cards
or perhaps do some decoupage. Our speaker
will talk about the history of the Windsor chair.
In March learnt all about the working of the
RNLI, how they started and stories of some of
their rescues. In April, Chenies Manor will be
the topic of our meeting.
Should any of these speakers interest you and
you would like to come to one of our meetings
you will be most welcome. We meet at the
P&TG Sports and Social Club on the third
Wednesday of the month, 10am for 10.15am.
Our social calendar is starting to fill up with
outings organised by the County Federation and
also with those we arrange for our own WI.
Enthusiast members request and suggest
suitable visits and a good time is had by all.
Several of our members will soon be
participating in the popular Lane End WI quiz
which is a friendly, fun evening with a delicious
supper to add to the enjoyment.
We have a healthy number of members but
there is always room for more. Why not come
and see if this could be the group for you? Pat
Village Care
Village Care is the Penn & Tylers Green
volunteer taxi service, provided solely by
volunteers from our area: without volunteer
drivers and telephonists we would collapse. We
aim to have enough volunteers to avoid pressure
on anyone.
We are currently in particular need of Drivers;
so if you would be able to drive for Village Care
once a month, please contact Rob on 817893.
We also need more telephonists from time to
time; please contact Gillian on 815693 if you
would like to help once a month.
We have decided to ask our clients to give us
48 hours notice for a booking, unless it is an
urgent medical booking, for which we can do 24
hours notice.
Our increasingly popular Tea Party will take
place on Friday 11th May, at 2.45 pm in the
Tylers Green Village Hall. We are very keen for
more of our clients to come and join us; there is
no charge and transport can be arranged. You
will get an invitation, so please come.
The Village Open Gardens Day will be on
Sunday 1st July from 1.30 to 5.30 pm. Tickets
as usual outside theTylers Green Village Hall
from 1 pm, and teas will again be at Mary
Coker’s house and in the Sanctuary, St
Margaret’s Church.
A PHOTO FROM LAST YEAR'S
OPEN GARDENS
As a result of our successful Open Gardens
income last year, we gave £2,000 to Tylers
Green Middle School to purchase a defibrillator,
for school and public use, at their request. We
look forward to seeing it mounted and in use.
Our very capable Treasurer, David Williams,
will be retiring from us later this year, and we
would welcome hearing from people who might
consider replacing him. For more information
please ring David on 07889766265.
Please consider volunteering for Village Care
– it is a worthwhile charity, and we cannot do
without you. Peter Sachs
Penn Pond Waders Golf Society
With a full programme of events booked for
2018, the ‘Waders’ are looking forward to
enjoying some sunshine and playing some good
golf at some great venues, selected by our new
Captain, Peter Credland.
On Friday 16 March, we visited Woking GC,
one of the finest courses in the South-East. A
brand-new venue awaits us on Friday 13 April,
when we will head to Verulam GC. Later that
month, a large party of ‘Waders’ will fly out to
Barcelona for 4 nights and 3 rounds of golf,
with 2 at the fabulous PGA Catalunya venue.
Our Captain’s Charity Golf Day last
December at Ashridge Golf Club was a huge
success with over 70 golfers taking part. By the
time you read this, we will have handed over a
cheque for £4,000 to Macmillan Cancer
Support. We would like to thank all our players
and guests who have been so generous in their
support of such a great cause.
PAT DANCER'S
NEWS & VIEWS
The weather again has been
unspeakable, causing more
illness and difficulties than for
some years. Acts of heroism
and fortitude in our public
services, notably our NHS,
struggling to overcome
expectations and complaints. Great to see
Angela Rippon on BBC TV 'One Show' 7pm,
heading a campaign to show their gratitude
with an award to be given for medical care
beyond the call of duty. Viewers can vote for
someone by computer online: 'BBC NHS
AWARDS' (Closing Date 5th April)
Appropriate that gratitude should shown after
so manycomplaints of inadequacy. Before the
NHS and much else in this country - we had to
pay to see a doctor! No social services, and no
TV airing so much negativity.
A very wet Spring seems to be here finally,
and gardens and open spaces are already
showing snowdrops and daffodils. Birds are
pairing up, nesting and singing again, with
migrants returning soon. Our birdwatching
group will be out and about soon.
I attended the closing meeting of the Mother's
Union in Penn, which Mrs Muspratt initiated
about 70 years ago, rejuvenated by the wife of
Revd Jeff Pierce's wife, June and continuing
since then. Sadly, too many members became
too infirm to continue, with no younger mothers
joining. At church services on March 11, our
vicar, the Revd Mike Bisset paid tribute to its
great achievement, supporting many good
charities like Away from it all with interesting
talks on many important subjects. Sad that a
movement doing wonderful family work in our
Commmonwealth and elsewhere, does not have
the name and reputation it deserves in this
country. It was designed to help all mothers and
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice April/May 2018
sole caring fathers, sharing their strengths and
support. Mary Sumner was its inspirational
founder. Many groups throughout this country
and abroad are still doing great work. The
London Mothers Union Office is very active
and publishes information.
Women's World Day of Prayer was held at
Church of The Good Shepherd, Widmer End,
focusing on the women of Surinam. It was well
attended. In future, perhaps this special service
will be renamed 'The World Day of Prayer.'
The Cottage Bookshop, which is to be closed,
is going to be a sad loss to readers all over the
World, who find a wealth of history, humour,
children's reading, and up to date novels and
entertainment here in the heart of Penn. It is like
a faithful friend to all who work there and visit,
where coming into a rich place of discovery.
Intention to choose a book quickly, can
becoming hours, browsing through so much of
interest. I understand closure will not be
immediate and at the moment, trading as usual!
I send all my best wishes to readers of this
column, for strength to work towards a positive
outcome of all our good endeavours. Pat Dancer
Spot The Difference
Tricky I know, but
rest assured help is
at hand. On
Sunday 8th April,
starting at dawn,
an assembly of early risers will screech and
whistle the morning away.
Meanwhile, starting at 7am from the Village
Hall, an assembled group of bleary eyed bird
friendly folk will endeavour to identify each and
every one of them...
A list of all seen during the Spring, will be
displayed on a board in the Village Hall Foyer
for all to see. Exciting eh! With expert help at
hand, do come and join us for an early morning
jovial stroll around the common. You’ll be
amazed by the amount of the wonders of
nature that will unfold in front of your very
eyes. Further strolls are planned for May 6th
and June 10th. We look forward to meeting you
meanwhile, Happy twitchings. Bill Sadler, 815798
Dear VV,
My name is Pam Jansons and my family and I have lived
on Beacon Hill in Penn for the past 9 years. In 2013 our 18
year old son Alexander died suddenly from myocarditis, a
virus which attacks the heart. It is one of the leading
causes of death in young people and could sadly affect
anyone, often otherwise very healthy people. Much is still
not understood about the condition, including how
common it is and why a virus such as flu can trigger it.
In 2013 Alexander's dad set up the Alexander Jansons
Fund based in Beaconsfield, to help fund research at the
Royal Brompton Hospital into myocarditis. Improving
outcomes for people who contract the virus, raising
awareness and helping to save lives. Very recently we
have joined forces with Cardiomyopathy UK.
We have successfully run many fun fundraising events,
such as quiz, bingo and race nights, skydiving, football
tournaments and many more. We are small enough that
any amount of money raised will have an impact and
every penny raised goes to our cause, we have no admin
or salary costs at all.
Our latest event is the first Alexander Jansons Fund
Charity ball, to be held at the beautiful Bisham Abbey on
19th May 2018. I still have a few tables left for this black
tie event to include bubbly on arrival, a three course meal, magician, dancing to the wonderful Swing Collective
band and a charity auction. If you would like more information or can help us in any way our website is www.
alexanderjansonsfund.org and perhaps we might even see you at the Ball. Pam Jansons
Ask For Angela Campaign
Pubs and bars within Chiltern and South
Bucks are being encouraged to join the
Ask for Angela campaign.
The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness
of sexual violence and abuse, and to stop harassment
that some people may experience while out on a date.
If anyone feels unsafe or threatened on a date, they can
ask a staff member for Angela and they will make sure
that they are ok and arrange for them to get home
safely. Every pub or bar that supports the scheme will
have an Ask for Angela sticker in the front door/window
and an Ask for Angela poster in the toilets. For the full
list of pubs and bars that support Ask for Angela please
visit: www.chiltern.gov.uk/askforangela or
Please contact Chiltern and South Bucks District
Council’s Community Safety team on 01494 586535 or
The word ‘Protestant’ comes from the Latin
‘protestare’ meaning ‘to witness forth’. This word
therefore has nothing to do with sectarian or tribal
identity, but is a theological term describing a
movement which witnesses forth to the truth of
Scripture, in contrast to the traditions of any
church.
It is therefore a very positive word, not denoting
unnecessary divisiveness, but the need to be
founded upon what God Himself has revealed in
His word, the Bible. How can we discern religious
truth from religious error? By going to the
Scriptures.
Pastor Simpson, who studied church history at
London University, has written this book on the
Reformation to emphasise this movement’s vital
importance for our own day.
