Sports & Social Club

Fireworks: Despite the abysmal weather, the

Penn & Tylers Green Sports & Social club

firework event went ahead as usual.

The firework display was excellent supported

by the fantastic music from Freddie Mercury

and his band queen. As always the BBQ

provided tasty hot food, and the hot drink girls,

provided not only tea and coffee, but mulled

wine and the Speciality of hot chocolate with

baileys, which is always a favourite on the

night. After the heavy rain during the day, the

young children seemed to be having much fun

in the mud and puddles.

We hope despite the lower attendance we will

still have raised some money for this years

charity, taxi charity for military veterans, who

give up there time to drive veterans to the

seaside and battlefields of Europe, a appropriate

charity for remembrance weekend.

Christmas mini Beer Festival & Gin Bar: On

Saturday the 7th December, we will hold the

above event at the Sports & Social club. The

club will be extended with a heated Christmas

marquee covering the patio area.

Live music will start at approx 7.30pm, with

two groups playing during the evening,

including the popular local band the Black

Sheep. The event will start at 6pm, with

entrance by ticket only. Tickets are now

available from the clubhouse @ £10.00, over

18’s only. Dave Taylor

Inaugural Meeeting of the

P&TG History Society

Dear VV Readers, please join us for the first

P&TG History Society gathering.

Local historian Alison Bailey, who has just

published a book on suffragettes in the area, will

be the guest speaker at the inaugural meeting of

the P & TG History Society on Friday, 17th

January 2020 to which everyone is welcome.

The meeting, in the Penn Room of Tylers

Green Village Hall, will also feature an

exhibition of old photographs of P & TG

especially selected and prepared by village

photographer Eddie Morton from his extensive

collection.

A number of women in Penn were in the

forefront of the votes-for-women campaign and

Alison will be giving a fascinating 30/40 minute

illustrated talk entitled Revolting Women -

Penn’s Suffragettes and their remarkable lives.

Prior to the talk, it is planned that a committee

will be formed to add some structure to the new

society which can then go on to organise further

events and visits.

Hopefully, society volunteers will also

prepare and maintain a P & TG archive to be

housed in the new village Heritage Centre,

envisaged for the old changing rooms area of

the village hall. Plans for the centre are being

considered by Wycombe Council and, if

approved, fund raising will begin in the new

year.

Admission is free to this inaugural meeting

and refreshments will be served. It begins at

7.30pm. If you would like to get involved in the

organisation of the new society, and/or with the

fund raising for the Heritage Centre, then please

Chepping Wycombe Parish

Council

The very first meeting of Chepping Wycombe

Parish Council was held in the Board Schools in

Loudwater at 6.00pm on 2nd January 1895. The

following is abbreviated from the first minutes

All 11 members were present and they signed

their declarations on accepting office.

The Rev R T A Spencer was appointed to act

as provisional Chairman to conduct the election

of a Chairman for the above Parish Council. Mr

Ashdown was elected and took the Chair.

George Wheeler of the firm Thomas Wheeler &

Co was proposed and seconded as Treasurer and

duly appointed. As no member of the Council

was appointed to act as Clerk, Mr Ben Taplin,

the assistant overseer became by virtue of Sec

17 sub sec 2 of The Local Government Act

1894 the first Clerk to the Parish Council.

It was proposed and seconded that an order

for the sum of £25-0-0 to be made upon the

Overseers, and carried unanimously. Mr David

Andrews was elected as Vice-Chairman.

It is fascinating reading the handwritten

minutes of the first few years to see that the

Parish in 1895 was concerned with Recreation

Grounds, Allotments, State of the river Banks in

Loudwater, and Burial Grounds. The boundaries

of the Parish then were different to now but the

issues the same. There were quarterly Council

meetings with the Annual meeting in April also

very similar to now. This means that Chepping

Wycombe Parish Council will be 125 years old

in January and we will be looking at out next

Council meeting at what we might do to

celebrate next year.

Carrying on the theme that the work we do

today is very similar, the final pieces of

equipment for Ashley Drive playground have

been ordered and are due to be fitted, weather

permitting, before the end of November. We can

then finish off the playground and what has

been a project lasting several years. I wonder

what we will do next and whether it will be any

different to the issues in 1825! Katrina Wood,

Chairman Chepping Wycombe Parish Council

CHURCH NEWS

Holy Trinity & St Margaret's

The other year Tesco had an aisle over which

hung a banner “All you need for Christmas”.

My hopes of Tesco having undergone a

religious conversion were dashed when I

entered the aisle! We at Holy Trinity & St

Margaret’s also do not have everything you

need for Christmas but at the heart of everything

is the One whose birthday we celebrate. So join

us for some of our special Christmas Services

- details of which can be found on page 6.

Have a great Christmas! Blessings, Revd Mike Bisset,

www.holytrinityandstmargartes.co.uk

Penn Free Methodist Church

Our Christmas/New Year services and meetings,

to which all are most welcome, details of which

are on page 6.

It is an historic Methodist tradition to gather

together in worship at the entrance of a new

year to thank God for the year gone by and to

dedicate ourselves to Him in the year ahead.

There is no better way to usher in the new year

than to engage in Christian fellowship and

corporate worship. On January 1st 1777 John

Wesley, one of the founders of Methodism,

wrote in his Journal, “We met as usual to renew

our covenant with God. It was a solemn season,

wherein many found His power present to heal

(their souls), and were enabled to urge their way

with strength renewed”. The word ‘solemn’

refers to a sense of the holy presence of God; it

does not mean miserable. In Biblical

Christianity joy, devotion and seriousness

always happily coexist.

Recent additions to our recorded sermons

website (www.soundcloud.com/penn-freemethodists)

include an exposition of John

6:37-40. Verse 40 reads, “And this is the will of

him that sent me, that every one which seeth

the Son, and believeth on him, may have

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last

day” (John 6:40). These words of the Lord are

teaching us that salvation is only through God

the Son. There can therefore be no forgiveness

of sin, no finding and truly believing in God,

apart from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is

simply not possible to worship the one true God

and to bypass Christ at the same time.

This verse also speaks of “the last day”, the

coming Day of Judgement when “we must all

appear before the judgement seat of Christ” (2

Corinthians 5:10). The atheist, the agnostic, the

sophisticated liberal secularist, as well as those

of all other faiths - all are going to have to

appear before Christ to give to Him an account

of their lives. Therefore all without exception

need to prepare for this coming day.

A further sermon recently uploaded is on the

text, 1 Kings 12, v18-24, and it reminds us of how

God judges nations in accordance with their

obedience - or otherwise - to Him. These verses

describe the tragic division of Solomon’s

kingdom upon his death into two separate

nations. This was God’s judgement upon a

national turning away from His commandments

and an embracing of false religion. Modern

Britain cannot guarantee security and prosperity

for itself, if it abandons its historic Christian

foundations to pursue the political correctness

of the age. These sermons can be freely downloaded.

This edition of Village Voice is always special,

bridging as it does two years with the exciting

periods in the life of the church of Advent,

Christmas and Epiphany. Apart from the Sunday

Services to be expected during this period, we

Methodists have a rather special service in

January called an Annual Covenant Service.

This is when, within the setting of Holy

Communion, we renew our promises to God.

Sometimes we have been joined by people from

other church traditions, mainly Anglicans, who

find the service to be specially meaningful. You

can see details of these services on page 6. We

hope to see you at any of our seasonal

celebrations. Have a Happy and Peaceful

Christmas celebrating the birth of the Christ

Child. Blessings, Peter Stevens, Senior Church Steward

IN MEMORY

Christine Read (1939-2019)

Chris Read, our good

friend and neighbour,

died on 26 October

after a long three year

struggle with ovarian

cancer. She was born in

1939 in Burgh le Marsh

near Skegness in

Lincolnshire and

remembers her parent's

fear of a German invasion of the East coast. Her

family was deeply rooted in the farming

community around Burgh le Marsh, but when

she was six they moved 50 miles to Grantham.

They were not well-off, but she has recorded in

a memoir, written over the last two years, that

she had the happiest of memories of a simple

but secure childhood with a loving family and

friends, of cycling to school and long journeys

on slow country buses. She was blessed with a

friendly welcoming disposition and made and

kept many friends throughout her life.

She went to the same Grantham primary

school as Russell, her husband-to-be, but it was

only after a degree in history at Bedford College

for Women in Regents Park, a part of London

University, that she joined Russell, an

engineering student, for a post-graduate course

in social studies at Leeds University. Both

started to teach and got engaged in 1962 and

married the following year. After some time in

Birmingham and London they went with

7-month old Peter first to Zambia, and later

Kenya where Russell again taught Maths.

Peter, the eldest of three, and born in London,

was followed by Catherine, born in Lusaka,

then Susannah born in Nairobi.

Returning to England they lived first in

Lincolnshire again, then moved to Oxfordshire

and both later worked in Oxford. Chris joined

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

the University Counselling Service,

occasionally - according to her - having to deal

with students traumatised by encounters with

Russell, by then an Oxford college bursar.

In retirement, they arrived here in Bank Road

in 2005 and were soon heavily involved in the

Chilterns Special Trees and Woods project. This

led to joining the investigation into King's

Wood's wholly unexpected prehistoric fields.

But her lasting legacy here will be the essential

role she played in researching and mapping the

30 trees which were planted in 1937 in memory

of all the local men killed in WW1. This led to

the replanting of missing trees, the design of an

information board and a grand re-inauguration

ceremony in June 2009 at which she read out

the names of the fallen.

Among her many enthusiasms she was a

talented and very sensitive artist, particularly

gifted in her use of inks and watercolours to

render the most beautiful images of the natural

world surrounding her.

She was wonderfully cared for in her last

days in the Florence Nightingale hospice near

Stoke Mandeville and was buried after a

Humanist ceremony in a beautiful woodland

setting at Greenacres Chiltern, near

Beaconsfield. Miles Green

Super Fun Run & Penn 7

We’ve had a great year and thanks for all the

support given to us in 2019. We will be presenting

this years charity monies to The Chilterns MS

Centre at the Sports & Social Club after Carols on

the Common on 19th December. We look forward

to seeing you all there.

We are now planning for the 2020 Super Fun Run /

Penn 7, which will be led by Phil Duffy. If you would

like to join us and be part of a great local

volunteering team raising monies for local charities

let me know, its not a lot of time, but its well worth

it. Thanks again to everyone who in some big or

small way contributed to the event this year,

especially the Marshals, without whom, the event

would not be possible. Once we have more

detailed plans for next year we will be publishing

them on social media and future editions of Village

Voice. Ian Barnett, imb@talktalk.net

WOODLAND

& GREEN SPACES

The problem with writing VV

articles is that I have to put in

copy a few weeks before

publication so as I am writing

this the leaves are turning

and falling at a great rate so

by the time you read this the

trees will be bare. The change

of colour from green is rapid

and frosts accelerate leaf drop.

Even though it may be cold the

autumn sunshine and the warm orange

and yellows bring a form of comfort.

As in early spring, when the new flowers and

buds are forming, Autumn brings its own burst

of activity with the arrival of the fruiting bodies

of the fungi. There are hundreds of different

types and to appreciate them one needs to slow

down and look closely at the ground. For

example the Amethyst Deceiver a delicate

purple mushroom is often hidden under

Bracken. Others grow on trees stumps and look

like miniature cities rising from the ground

where as others stand out boldly like the Fly

Agaric when it's bright red top spotted with

white spots. There are several different shapes

and sizes apart from the traditional mushroom

shape. The bracket sticking out of the side of a

tree or fallen log looking like a handle, or the

trumpet type pointing to the sky and even one

that is cauliflower-like. This is the Hen of the

Wood and can be seen growing up the base of

tall conifers.

One of our problems is that the presence of

edible fungi attracts foragers from far and wide.

In particular one group has been seen collecting

bagfuls which is unfair on regular users of the

wood. They strip out everything leaving nothing

so we have taken the decision to disallow the

picking of fungi to protect the ecology. It is a

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

requirement in law that you have permission of

the landowner to forage. It is a point that is

often missed in TV programmes on the subject.

We have said goodbye to the four British

white cattle who quietly grazed Farther Barn

Field. Those who ventured into the field

found them very docile being used

to dogs and people at their home

in Burnham Beeches. Thank

you to the people who helped

to check on them, it was a

very successful exercise and

we plan to repeat it next year.

For those who met the barrier

at the bottom of the Holloway

a new gate is now in place.

I'd like to say a huge thank you

to the volunteers who have turned out

to help us on the work parties. We have

cleared the sides of a couple of the major paths.

There is more to do so if you feel you can give a

couple of hours please send an email to

commonwoodvolunteer @gmail.com. The next

work parties are December 7/8, January 4/5,

February 1/2. Mike Morley

OFSTED rated OUTSTANDING 2013 & 2016

The Christmas doorstep challenge is on!

Imagine how many Christmases

could be brightened by a simple

gesture.

The rules:

1. Pick someone who has had a tough time or

would simply benefit from some festive

goodwill. It doesn't have to be someone you

know well.

2. Choose them a gift - big or small.

3. Write them an anonymous note, some kind

words about why you were thinking of them.

4. Leave it all at their doorstep.

5. Knock on the door and run away - make sure

they don't see you!

6. Feel happy knowing that you have spread

some Christmas cheer with no expectations of

anything in return.

By sharing it here let’s see if it catches on and

we can spread a bit of Christmas magic.

Miracles really do happen!

It is great to report that the summer leagues

also came to a close with our ladies 1st team

winning the top division and so are heading for

the premier division next summer which is

extremely exciting for our small village club.

Our Winter Vets leagues are now under way

but are being hampered by the persistent rain.

The ladies are doing well across the board,

including a newly formed 4th team as we have

so many ladies keen to play which is a great

testament to our club. The men’s teams have

managed to play a few matches away on clay

and tarmac courts which are not as popular as

our fantastic ‘tiger turf’ courts at home! The

mixed teams are doing well despite the rain.

Coming up, we will run a few popular events

over the Christmas period including a special

‘Club Night’ where members can come and

play in fancy dress and enjoy some mulled wine

and mince pies, and the annual ‘Over vs Under

30’s tournament’ which I am sure will be as

hotly contested as ever!

We always love to see new members. We

pride ourselves on being a really friendly club,

with a real mixture of abilities. We have lots of

sessions that members can drop into for Ladies,

Men’s and Mixed tennis. Juniors have drop in

coaching on a Saturday. Members and nonmembers

can access the excellent coaching with

Neil James. So if you are new to tennis or feel

like picking up your racquet again, please visit

involved. Kate Noble

P&TG Football Club

The season so far for the senior team has been

mixed. After a slow start the first team went on

a strong run winning 9 out of their next 10

games, putting themselves in the chasing pack

at the top of the league and included the first

game in a long time against our local

neighbours Holmer Green, which we ran out as

winners. However October and November have

been disappointing, and we look to build and

make the season more like September !

the case, start their season far too late and will

most likely be up against it with too many

games in April, but they have started strongly

and lead the table at the time of writing with

only a careless defeat in the cup versus Iver a

blemish on a possible 100% record.

Our Ladies team have started brilliantly and

are well in the hunt at the top end of the table.

As a fairly newly formed team, consisting of a

young group of girls, they have started well with

just one defeat in the first 7 games. As we saw

recently at Wembley, the interest in women’s

football is at its highest level, and while we are

expecting such good things from this group of

players, they are well worth a watch on a

Sunday morning for your football fix.

The junior sections across boys and girls

continues to thrive. It’s too early to mention

potentials, but as always we hope the boys and

girls play football with a smile and a touch of

skill. We once again regained our FA

Community Charter standard club award, which

is the highest possible award from the FA, and

shows the level of coaching, welfare and effort

our little club and community put in. This is

reflected in the numbers we have and the quality

of teams training and playing each week. For

those who want a real insight into how popular

the club is, I recommend a Saturday morning at

the club after winter, watching players from 4 to

16 all at the same venue, all enjoying football

and all the laughter!

I know many of you have been enjoying

Wycombe Wanderers rise up the league this

season. It is really something to see our local

professional club riding high, especially for

those who still remember the Loakes Park days!

Some of you were fortunate to see Sunderland

come to town recently, but none more so than

Our U8s who were guests for the day at Adams

park and had a great time training on the pitch

and were a real credit to the club, the village and

to the local area. Great stuff boys!

Finally, for those wondering we have yet to

announce our Festival of Football for 2020.

Quite simply the Bank Holiday Monday has

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

disappeared! We will be announcing dates soon

for our Festival of Football, when we have

agreed internally and with the relevant

authorities, when they will be. This year’s

tournament Director Will Morris has one more

thing to deal with!

Penn Pond Waders Golf Society

Since our last update, our members and guests

have enjoyed outings to 2 cracking golf courses.

In October, we visited Camberley Heath GC.

The heavens opened up when we started play

causing some flooding on the opening greens.

Thankfully, weather conditions quickly

improved and some good scores were achieved.

The day was won by Graham Garrett-Smith

with 38 points, playing off a handicap of 14.

Neil Rogers was runner-up with 34 points.

On 5th November, an impressive turn-out of

44 of our members and guests travelled to

Surrey to play the superb New Zealand GC.

Dave Clarke won the day on 36 points, closely

followed by Gerry Britton with 34 points.

Our Champion Golfer of 2019 was 'mister

consistency' Roger Stewart. He does of course

set all our playing handicaps for each of our

events. His own starting handicap will I’m sure

be more closely scrutinised than usual next year.

By the time you read this, we will have had

our final event of the year at Ashridge Golf

Club. At this event, we will have run a whole

host of fundraising activities aiming to raise a

handsome donation in aid of Chiltern Prostate

Cancer, the charity chosen by our 2019 captain,

Peter Thorne. Pete has done an excellent job this

year for which I would like to thank him on

behalf of my fellow Waders.

If you are interested in joining our friendly

Society or initially to come along as a guest at

one of our events, please contact our Secretary

Bob Teuton on 07973 137446. As always, we

look forward to welcoming some new Waders at

some of the great golfing venues we’ve got

booked next year (full details of which will be

provided in the next edition of Village Voice).

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

SCHOOLS

NEWS ROUND UP

Tylers Green Middle School

Events at TGMS: It was delightful to see our

Year 3 children lead the harvest assembly. They

were very confident in their delivery of their

message and used a combination of drama and

singing to relay their message. It was an

occasion to invite our Year 3 parents into our

school and we were overwhelmed by the

numbers of visitors. The whole school donated

items of food that to the One Can Trust. We

were joined by Reverend Mike Bisset who

engaged the children with a can of baked beans.

School Council: At TGMS we often see

democracy in action and each class elected a

School Councillor. The School Councillors are:

Max Sugden; Nellie O’Connor; Sebastian Bull;

Maisie Lomas; Emma Clark; Baxter Yule; Lily

Gurney and Chiara Sabatini. Miss Baker shall

be working with our School Council to support

our aim for a ‘greener school’ and reviewing our

School Citizenship award.

Mental Health and Anti Bullying: This

year, we will be wearing odd socks one day to

school to show that everyone is uniquely

different. This theme links with our PSHE

programme (Personal, Social and Health

Education) that is delivered through assemblies

and class lessons to support our children to

recognise each person’s strengths, and to not

tolerate bullying behaviour.

With so many concerns about children’s

mental health, we have held many assemblies

over the year to discuss that everyone has a

mental health and how important it is to look

after it. With our ‘Body Confidence Dress’, our

pupils developed a greater understanding of

being happy in their own skin. We were asked

by Racheal Kin, one of our parents, to help her

in designing a dress for an upcoming beauty

pageant. Whilst a more unusual request, I

considered the merits to our children being

involved. The pageant supports and raises

awareness for mental health. This was a subject

close to Racheal’s heart, after going through a

life changing operation to remove her large

bowel in 2017. Her goal was to represent the

issue of body confidence among young people

and the dress would make this the centre of

attention during the pageant. Rachel went onto

win the pageant and return to the school to talk

about her amazing journey. It was a very

inspiring assembly.

Super North Star: We have been fortunate

to have guest speakers in school to tell the

children about their passions and their type of

work. This was one of the requests from the

children from the pupil survey when asked

about the Compass For Life initiative. They

wanted to know other people's journeys.

In October, we were extremely fortunate to

have a very talented musician join us in

assembly. He opened by playing the piano and

immediately we all knew that this was

something special. Our piano has never sounded

so good! Matt Johnson is the keyboard player in

the band, Jamiroquai. Matt told us that he first

started realising he enjoyed playing music when

22 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

he was about 10 years old. He had grown up in

Bournemouth and soon realised that if he

wanted to make a living as a musician, he

needed to head to London. He recalled how he

would take on any sort of work to earn money,

including busking! Finally he got his big break,

joined Jamiroquai, and has since toured the

world. The largest concert was in Rio De

Janeiro when he played to an audience of

130,000. The key messages that he gave to the

children were:

• Keep practising and working on your skills;

• Take each opportunity as it will help you on

your journey to your Super North Star;

• Always be kind to everyone you meet.

As one of our parents, Matt agreed to support

our message, 'aspiration for all'. As part of the

personal development part of our school

curriculum, Compass For Life has given us all

the shared vocabulary and inspiration to aim

high. I am sure we have many parents, indeed

many former pupils of TGMS who could give

first-hand experience to the school. If you

would like to take part in a whole school

assembly, sharing your journey and aspirations,

then I would love to hear from you. Vanessa

Pinkney, Headteacher

Tylers Green

First School

Although the first half

of the autumn term

was long, it seemed to

pass by in a flurry of

exciting activity and

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

change! The first piece of

wonderful news for

both TG First School

and the local

community is the

appointment of

Mrs Jude Talbot as

substantive

Headteacher from

January 2020. Mrs

Talbot comes to us with a

wealth of experience and boundless enthusiasm

– she is so excited that she is counting down the

days until her arrival! Mrs Talbot will be a

wonderful leader for the school and we look

forward to her leading us into the next chapter

in the story of TGFS!

The second piece of good news is that from

September 2020 the school will be able to offer

‘wrap around care’ with a breakfast and after

school club in operation. Details of this are

being finalised at the moment but this change

will be a huge bonus for working parents or

those who want a little more flexibility with

dropping off and picking up times.

This term we have moved away from the

traditional ‘Open Days’ in favour of 1:1 tours

with parents and their children who are looking

for a place in Reception next September. This

personalised approach has proved to be

extremely popular with 41 already booked/

having taken place. We feel strongly that

first impressions count and are happy to

commit this time to help parents make such

an important decision for their child’s first

school.

Since the last article we have opened the

doors to our very many willing parents who

have carried out TGFS DIY SOS working

groups. This has enabled an enormous amount

of work to be done on site and really brought

the school community together. It speaks

volumes when a parent thanks me for the best

day off from work he has ever had!

Just before half term we linked our

curriculum to ‘One World Week’ where children

across the school studied the traditions, customs,

was a fabulously creative week that involved

there was also a LOT of baking, cooking and

The Village Pre-school

I am very sad to report that Lesley Routledge

who has been my right hand ‘man’ for the past 9

years is leaving the Pre-school. She is moving

to Sir William Ramsay school to take up the

position of SEN Manager. Whilst we wish her

the very best of luck in her new job, she will be

missed by us all.

We have a new Parent’s Committee and they

have organised a packed range of fundraising

activities for the academic year ahead. We hope

to hold another Quiz Night at the Sports &

Social Club in February and are looking for

donations of Raffle Prizes (if anyone is able to

donate anything please contact Nicky on the

number below). We will also be holding an

Easter Fayre with refreshments, a BBQ and fun

activities for the children, look out for further

details in the next edition of VV. Fundraising

events provide money to enable extra-curricular

activities and experiences for the children such

as Zoolab, who will visit us again in December.

Our Christmas party this year will include

entertainment from Becky and her Pre-school

Disco, a visit from Father Christmas and his Elf

and a Christingle craft activity for the children.

We have also secured a group booking of 30

tickets to Dick Whittington at the Wycombe

Little Oaks Nurseries

Harvest: Our children at all our sites in Tylers

Green, Penn & Forty Green enjoyed being

HARVEST HEROES this year. Each family

donated non-perishable food with which we

filled a car and delivered to the One Can Trust.

It was a good opportunity for the older children

to consider the needs of others and to play a

small part in helping them.

Christmas Nativity Season: Our Little Oaks

One Nativity has been moved from December

12th to the 10th, as Holy Trinity Parish Hall is

used as a Polling Station. Little Oaks

Beaconsfield children will present their version

of the Christmas story on Wednesday 11th,

whilst the children of Little Oaks Two will be

playing their part in St Margaret’s Church on

13th. Times to be treasured.

Christmas Giving: Our Dash Shoebox

Appeal: Back in September 2013, we began to

consider how we could engage with a local

charity. Although we loved the shoebox appeals

run by many national and international charities,

these gifts generally need to be collected by the

end of October in order to ship them to their

destinations abroad. So we decided to design

our very Little Oaks Shoebox Appeal, targeting

a local charity, DASH.

Over the past six years we have delivered

more than 150 shoeboxes, wrapped and full of

gifts for the adults and children being

accommodated in refuges in our local area,

having fled from domestic abuse. Often, these

victims have had to leave in haste and with

nothing, so our gifts are a mixture of essentials

and luxuries, in the hope that we can address

some of their immediate needs at Christmas

time. We encourage parents to involve their

children, in an age-appropriate way, in both in

the purchase of items and in conversations

about who will be receiving them Ruthie Pocock

ASHWELLS &

GOMM VALLEY

Gomm Valley

The application is still being considered by

WDC and no decision seems likely before early

next year. Human+Nature report good progress

and that the designs for Ashwells Lane will

incorporate all manner of provisions to slow

down drivers and reduce the risk of this

connection being seen as a convenient and

speedy relief route. They think it should be a

very fine, quiet and safe lane.

Ashwells Development

WDC granted consent in May this year for the

development of 109 dwellings, subject to the

submission of detailed proposals.

Representatives of the Ashwells Forum were

recently invited to meet Charles Brocklehurst

and James Galitzine from WDC’s Major

Project's Team, together with their development

consultants, to provide local input as they

prepare to update their masterplan concepts for

Ashwells. The National Planning Policy

Framework requires design policies to be

developed with local communities so they

reflect local aspirations, and this meeting was to

be the first of a series of development planning

reviews.

This will be the largest development to take

place in P&TG for the last 50 years and needs to

respond to local needs and make an outstanding

contribution to the community, with strong

connections to the village. It should adopt high

quality design and an appropriate mix of

dwellings, including affordable homes. WDC

proposes that homes for rent would be located

elsewhere in Wycombe, but making others

within reach of local first-time buyers by means

of a Discount Market Value scheme. There

would also be some provision for self-build and

custom-build houses. The mix might include

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

some apartments which would increase the

potential for more community open space and

help to define different character areas.

Among the suggestions made to the

development team were:

• Translate some sense of the existing village

character

• Good honest architecture using high quality

materials

• South facing houses where possible

• Preference for car ports

• Gravel internal roads (similar to Bank Road)

Finally, it is proposed that street names should

reflect local history and that the development

should have a new name to avoid confusion

with the present Ashwells. Thoughts are invited

for what these might be. Ken Cooke, Miles Green

PENN

JUBILEE WOOD

The site, around 50 acres, was bought by the

Woodland Trust in 2013 with substantial help

from Beacon Hill Nature Reserve, a consortium

of local residents intent on conserving it for

future generations, and the backing of the

Chiltern Society, which expressed an interest in

managing the site. The Woodland Trust

immediately planted an area of the site with

around 6500 trees, with the intention that the

remainder would be grazed to support

biodiversity. In 2014 it was leased to the Society

on a 199 year lease.

The site is maintained by a number of the

Chiltern Society’s conservation groups, some

visiting once or twice a year. However, one

group, under the leadership of long-time Penn

resident Benjamin Sharpe, visits most months.

Their conservation activity is centred around

Penn Jubilee Wood and the surrounding area.

Benjamin took over leadership of the group in

June 2018 when his predecessor in the post

moved away from the Chilterns.

On leading the group, Benjamin says ‘this

role offers me the chance to give something

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

back to the village in which I was born and

raised. It is a privilege to care for the meadows,

woods and ponds with which I grew up. I feel

part of the landscape and tied to the fabric of the

Chilterns. Working on the land is also a

welcome reprieve from the frenzy of every day

life!’.

At Penn Jubilee Wood, the group has got

stuck into everything from coppicing hazel to

removing tree guards from 6500 young trees to

restoring biodiversity in the large meadows. You

may also see the group working on local ponds,

including Widmer Pond, in the winter.

On pond work, Benjamin explains ‘the pond

work is very rewarding. At Gawde Water Pond

earlier this year we thinned out the reed beds

that had swamped the pond. In some areas, the

reeds were so thick we had to cut the tangled

roots away with saws! It was wonderful to see

the pond restored through our efforts. Plus, there

no need for the gym that week!’

The group is completely volunteer run and

conservation work parties typically take place

on the second Saturday of every month from

10AM-1PM. Benjamin is keen to grow the

group and would love to welcome more

residents from Penn, Tylers Green and the

surrounding area. If you are interested in

coming to one of the group’s events, please

contact Benjamin on: 07500746445 or via

email: b.sharpe@

btinternet.com. Everyone

is welcome.

On a final note

Benjamin adds ‘If you

want to act on global

challenges like climate

change and biodiversity

loss, if you want to

escape the stress of work,

if you want to become

part of the story of the

Chilterns, come and

make your mark with us.

CHILTERN AONB

& NATIONAL

PARK STATUS

Dear Village Voice,

Since 1965, the Chilterns have been formally

recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural

Beauty (AONB), protected by certain levels of

conservation. Whilst this designation has

provided some degree of protection in the

Chilterns, in some instances, it has proved

insufficient in preserving the landscape to the

highest degree...

Obtaining National Park status would

enhance the protection of the Chilterns for the

future, facilitating the development of a strategy

on the conservation and development of the

region, as well as its accessibility for a wider

audience.

I developed this idea some time ago and

wrote to MP’s and councils in the AONB to

canvas their opinion.

We had the news that the Government was

launching a review to consider the future of

National Parks and AONB’s, grounded on the

belief that the system of national landscapes in

England is a key aspect of the nation’s

wellbeing. This was highly welcome.

In September, the final report of the

Landscapes Review was published. Led by

Julian Glover, this report included the

recognition that there is very strong merit in the

request for National Park status for the Chilterns

AONB, and that the area is an ‘obvious choice

for National Park status.’

As the first person to question what further

enhancements, such as National Park status,

could be obtained to maintain and protect the

Chilterns, I very much hope the Government

will progress these recommendations

immediately, providing an extra means of

protection to our fragile countryside.

The Chilterns continue to be put under an

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

immense strain, largely from the threat of

development. It is imperative that the necessary

safeguards are in place to enhance the Chilterns

landscape and to prevent its unnecessary

destruction.

The biggest threat currently facing the

Chilterns is the construction of HS2, which is

already permanently blighting large parts of

Buckinghamshire.

Already mature trees have been felled, bird

nests destroyed, and local ecosystems disrupted.

Of particular concern is the rare chalk

streams within the Chilterns landscape, already

degrading at an alarming pace, that threaten to

be seriously damaged by HS2 construction

works. These are precious streams and of high

environmental significance, providing a rich

habitat for wildlife and acting as an integral part

to local biodiversity.

Further protections on the Chiltern

Landscapes obtained through National Park

status would provide the much needed

conservation required to ensure the survival and

development of the landscape and our

biodiversity.

The Chilterns are an obvious candidate for

receiving National Park status; I hope the

Government makes use of these

recommendations to enable the conservation of

this beautiful area. Dame Cheryl Gillan MP

The difference between AONBs and National

Parks (via https://naturenet.net): AONBs and

National Parks are actually of equal importance

for landscape and scenic beauty, the difference is

that AONBs exist for the purpose of conserving

and enhancing their natural beauty. National

Parks, in addition to this, have a second purpose -

to promote understanding and enjoyment of the

area's special qualities by the public. Because of

this extra (and substantial) layer of responsibility

they have their own independent National Park

authorities with full planning powers running

them. There are other more subtle differences. The

National Parks conservation and enhancement

purpose specifically includes "wildlife and cultural

heritage". Nowhere in AONB legislation is cultural

heritage covered.

Guides, Brownies & Rainbows

Seasons Greetings VV readers! I cannot believe

how quickly 2019 has flown by, and how soon

Christmas will be upon us.

The 1st Brownies have been working hard

this last term on their Live Smart badge, part of

which included discussing our #plasticpromise.

This is Girlguiding’s response to our ever

increasing plastic pollution and forms the

biggest ever girl-led campaign to tackle the

problem. We asked our brownies to bring in all

the hard plastic items their family used in the

course of a week to see just how much plastic

waste as a pack we were generating. There was

quite a lot! We talked about the impact it had on

the environment and what we could all do as

individuals to reduce, reuse and recycle. With

all the items we collected we created a plastic

sculpture of a turtle, a marine animal that is

impacted by the rubbish in our oceans. One of

our brownies was so motivated by our session,

that she went on to complete her Inventor badge

by creating a talking bin, which asked the user

“can you recycle it?” to prompt them to put

items in recycling bins before just throwing

them away, we were all very impressed! By

the time this report goes to print we will have

learnt some Diwali cooking, and completed as

part of our skills builder for the Live Smart

badge, the Tool School challenge. Here we will

teach the girls to recognise tools and safety

equipment, practice using some of these DIY

tools ourselves and explore where these tools

are used. Thankfully I have amassed quite a

selection of tools after spending the previous

year renovating a property and I’m looking

forward to showing the girls how they work.

Just before we break up for the holidays we

will be getting ready for Christmas with our

Brownie party. Following on from my last

report, I completed the full marathon distance of

the Shine 2019 Night Walk around the

sometimes chaotic streets of London along with

my Dad. We did it under 9 hours, which was

just incredible, especially as I hadn’t prepared

for my Dad to turn it into a route march, but my

feet certainly paid the price!

Our Kingswood Trefoil Guild (adults) spent

an evening back in October flower arranging in

an oasis without using vases and I think you’ll

agree; the results look beautiful. Before

Christmas, some members will be attending the

Bucks Trefoil Guild Winter Gathering in

Wendover, where there will be activities themed

around Poppies, a soup and sandwich lunch and

where they will be entertained by the Chiltern

WI choir in the afternoon. Their next meeting

will be an enjoyable fish and chip supper

evening!

On that note I wish you all a very Merry

Christmas and a Happy New Year! Katie Barnes

P&TG Christmas Scout Post

Our Post boxes will be available in readiness to

accept all your cards. We have recruited our

posties and our special Scout Post Christmas

Card delivery service is ready & waiting. To all

new residents in the villages, we run a

Christmas card postal service selling stamps and

delivering cards to the following areas: Manor

Farm; Tylers Green and most of Penn. You will

find information posted around the villages in

December. We will have post boxes situated at

the following places: The Village Hall; Kings

Ride Supermarket; Filippos Hairdressers;

Lansdales Pharmacy; Joe Gleeson's Butcher;

Village Shop on the Green and JJ’s

Delicatessen. They will all have our Scout-Post

boxes and they will be selling our special

stamps. The cost is £1.00 for a strip of 6

stamps. The post boxes will be out at the

beginning of December, last day for posting

Saturday 14th December. We rely on an army of

postie/helpers. We have a core of posties who

have helped us for many years and enjoy a

Sunday morning stroll delivering the cards. If

asked why not join us, it’s only a small

commitment but you will become an important

cog helping to make Scout Post work so well.

This year Scout Post is being sponsored by

fmifa. Thank you to Phil and the team for

supporting Scouting.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and

Happy New Year from your local Scout Group.

Evening WI

Firstly, thank you to everyone who turned up

on such a miserable wet afternoon to browse

round our Craft Fair and buy some early

Christmas presents. A big thank you from us as

organisers and from all the stall holders. Our

next one is planned for March 7 so please put it

in your diary.

After our recent AGM, our new committee is

now in place and ready to arrange activities for

the year ahead. Our new programme of speakers

looks varied and interesting, hopefully with

something for everyone. Our November

meeting was a useful tasting and exchanging of

recipes along with some Christmas craft. We

will also take part in the Holy Trinity Church

Christmas Tree competition, which is well

worth a visit. In December we celebrate with

the Joyful Divas at our Christmas party.

After all the festivities a group of us are going

to the Mill at Sonning in January to dine and see

‘Singing in the Rain’. Another social occasion

coming up soon will be a wine and cheese

tasting evening, which I am sure will be very

popular.

Knit and Natter, Chomp and Chatter and

Book Club continue to meet regularly and

provide opportunities for our members to make

and develop friendships which are such an

important part of life.

If any of this sounds appealing then do come

and join in on the second Thursday of the

month, 8pm at Tylers Green Village Hall.

Sometimes the title of a talk sounds less than

riveting but the actual presentation turns out to

be fascinating and hugely entertaining. Such

was the case with Colin Pawson’s history of

one of the best talks we have had.

return visit with their quality African handicrafts

contribution in November 2016, we have raised

a total of £747, which has made a very real

difference to the lives of people who struggle

every day.

At our November meeting we will celebrate

our WI being 8 years old, with the ever-popular

Ploughman’s Lunch after the meeting. We

endeavour to make our meetings enjoyable and

inclusive, a happy place for women to come and

learn something new, and feel supported as

some are experiencing bereavement or chronic

pain. One recent speaker, the renowned

journalist Bill Hamilton, captured the spirit of

our WI in his remark, ”It was so uplifting to see

such a vibrant WI in good heart”.

When Tom Way comes again in December

with his lovely photography we shall no doubt

have seasonal refreshments with our coffee.

Our speaker in January will be introducing us to

the year off to a good start and maybe inspire

some to a new art.

Village Care

At Christmas, Village Care Volunteers will be

driving our Clients until the end of Friday 13th

December, and we will start driving again on

Thursday 2nd January 2020.

We do wish all our Clients, Volunteers and

Open Gardeners a Happy Christmas and a good

New Year. In case of emergency during the

holiday, please ring Peter Sachs on 257823.

Thirty Volunteers joined us for our AGM on

4th October, where we reported that we had a

record 500 people going round our beautiful

Open Gardens this year, with record ticket and

teas takings of £2750 for this very social event

in our Village. We welcome any Gardeners who

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

would like to open their gardens in the vicinity

of the Common, in 2020; please contact Ruth at

PowellRuth@btinternet.com. The Open

Gardens date next year is on Sunday 14th June

2020, which is a must for your diary.

We now have over £6000 available for local

charitable donations, and we would be grateful

for any suggestions on spending it. At the AGM

we took the opportunity of giving £1000 to

Scannappeal Bucks MRI appeal, and the photo

shows Peter Sachs giving the cheque to Susie

Weisz, an appeal Trustee.

Village Care did 527 client trips in the past

year, for 80 clients. Most of the destinations

were for hospitals or GPs. We welcome new

clients for our transport service, which is much

appreciated by the village and local area.

We shall hold our popular tea party on Friday

15th May, for all our clients, volunteers and

gardeners. Please put this important date in

your diary as well.

We have a fairly constant loss of volunteers

who move away from the Village, and we

always need to replace them. We are in need of

new drivers, if you have a little spare time and a

car. There is no obligation, and we would only

need you, when you are available, for one day a

month. If you would like to discuss this very

worth-while work, please ring Rob (817893).

We also need more telephonists, again without

obligation and for only one morning a month;

please ring Gillian (815693) to join this cheerful

team.

Happy Christmas from a thriving Village

FIELDS IN

KING'S WOOD Part 3

So far, we have established that LiDAR

images unexpectedly reveal clear evidence

of what appear to be field boundaries in

King's Wood and that the underlying

geology is not the unploughable clay which

usually underlies woodland, but is the soft

chalk favoured by early farmers. We

ended Part 2 asking whether there is any

evidence of when it was not woodland and

these fields were being ploughed.

Bassetsbury Manor

King's Wood and the neighbouring St John's

Wood to its north were not separated until 1203

when the manor of Wycombe was divided

between two lords, Alan Basset and Robert

Vipont. The open area around Kingswood

House, immediately east of Kingswood Road, is

a surviving part of St John's Wood, but a

lynchet (a sharp change of slope resulting from

ploughing) continues the King's Wood contours

ignoring the boundary between the woods.(see

map). This suggests that the formation of the

lynchet, and

hence

evidence of

ploughing,

preceded

the division

of 1203.

An

agreement

in 1224

between the

two lords

and the

commoners

refers to

enclosed

www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

Village Voice December 2019/January 2020

land near Hazlemere, but otherwise refers only

to the commoners' rights to the pannage for pigs

in the adjoining woods of Wycombe and of

Penn. King's Wood was held by Bassetsbury

Manor and its name and description as a wood

could date from when Henry III (1216-72) held

it in his own hands as part of Bassetsbury manor

for some years. The name St John's Wood

must be from 1312 when it passed into the

ownership of the Knights Hospitaller of St John

of Jerusalem

There is no mention in the Bassetsbury

manorial records of any fields in King's Wood.

It is all about trees, such as in 1541 when 'ten

hundred beche trees of the best and biggest in a

wood or grove called Kynges woode' were sold

for £25. Nor is there any reference to fields in

the records of two Inquiries into rights of

common on Wycombe Heath in 1576 and 1666.

The commoners claimed that both St John's

Wood and King's Wood were used as common

by the surrounding inhabitants and that 'they

had always taken underwood.... thorns, bushes,

holly and hazel...and had dug chalk in King's

Wood.'

Thus we can say with some confidence that

King's Wood was woodland as far back as this

medieval evidence can take us. Next time we

must look at Domesday Book and for any

earlier Saxon evidence. Miles Green

Plastic Free P&TG

Some ideas to reduce your plastic footprint this Christmas:

Wrapping paper - could be UNRECYCLABLE. - Shiny, metallic,

glittery wrapping paper cannot be recycled! If placed wrongly

in the recycling bin, will contaminate whole loads of recycled

materials, which will then be disposed of via landfill or

incineration. Try the scrunch test if you are unsure whether your

paper is recyclable. Try to scrunch wrapping paper into a ball. If

it keeps its shape, it is recyclable. But if it’s glittery, it isn’t!

Christmas trees and wreaths - should be cut up into small

pieces and disposed of with garden waste, first remove any

synthetic hangers or decorations before putting them into the

garden waste bin or compost.

Disposable/single use cutlery/plates/tumblers/napkins:

Many plastic cups and other food ware are low grade plastic,

which is often not recyclable. Dirty paper plates, napkins and

paper towels contaminate the recycling facility, so these should

be placed in general waste

current recycling symbols in use https://www.recyclenow.com

Wycombe District Neighbourhood Watch

Association Cyber SecurityAwareness

At the recent open meeting of the Wycombe District

Neighbourhood Watch Association we were fortunate to have a

very informative presentation on Cyber Protection by Mark

Godsland, Police Cyber Security Advisor.

“Cyber security is the means by which individuals and organisations

reduce the risk of being affected by cyber crime.

Cyber security's core function is to protect the devices we all use

(smartphones, laptops, tablets and computers), and the services we

access online - both at home and work - from theft or damage. It's

also about preventing unauthorised access to the vast amounts of

personal information we store on these devices, and online.

Cyber security is important because smartphones, computers and

the internet are now such a fundamental part of modern life, that

it's difficult to imagine how we'd function without them. From

online banking and shopping, to email and social media, it's more

important than ever to take steps that can prevent cyber criminals

getting hold of our accounts, data, and devices.”

For those of you who were unable to attend our meeting, the

National Cyber Security Centre Website has a lot of useful

information about staying secure online and the link below is for

the page specifically aimed at individuals and families.
