Guides, Brownies & Rainbows

Seasons Greetings VV readers! I cannot believe

how quickly 2019 has flown by, and how soon

Christmas will be upon us.

The 1st Brownies have been working hard

this last term on their Live Smart badge, part of

which included discussing our #plasticpromise.

This is Girlguiding’s response to our ever

increasing plastic pollution and forms the

biggest ever girl-led campaign to tackle the

problem. We asked our brownies to bring in all

the hard plastic items their family used in the

course of a week to see just how much plastic

waste as a pack we were generating. There was

quite a lot! We talked about the impact it had on

the environment and what we could all do as

individuals to reduce, reuse and recycle. With

all the items we collected we created a plastic

sculpture of a turtle, a marine animal that is

impacted by the rubbish in our oceans. One of

our brownies was so motivated by our session,

that she went on to complete her Inventor badge

by creating a talking bin, which asked the user

“can you recycle it?” to prompt them to put

items in recycling bins before just throwing

them away, we were all very impressed! By

the time this report goes to print we will have

learnt some Diwali cooking, and completed as

part of our skills builder for the Live Smart

badge, the Tool School challenge. Here we will

teach the girls to recognise tools and safety

equipment, practice using some of these DIY

tools ourselves and explore where these tools

are used. Thankfully I have amassed quite a

selection of tools after spending the previous

year renovating a property and I’m looking

forward to showing the girls how they work.

Just before we break up for the holidays we

will be getting ready for Christmas with our

Brownie party. Following on from my last

report, I completed the full marathon distance of

the Shine 2019 Night Walk around the

sometimes chaotic streets of London along with

my Dad. We did it under 9 hours, which was

just incredible, especially as I hadn’t prepared

for my Dad to turn it into a route march, but my

feet certainly paid the price!

an evening back in October flower arranging in
