Village Voice December 2019/January 2020CHURCH NEWSHoly Trinity & St Margaret'sThe other year Tesco had an aisle over whichhung a banner “All you need for Christmas”.My hopes of Tesco having undergone areligious conversion were dashed when Ientered the aisle! We at Holy Trinity & StMargaret’s also do not have everything youneed for Christmas but at the heart of everythingis the One whose birthday we celebrate. So joinus for some of our special Christmas Services- details of which can be found on page 6.Have a great Christmas! Blessings, Revd Mike Bisset,www.holytrinityandstmargartes.co.ukPenn Free Methodist ChurchOur Christmas/New Year services and meetings,to which all are most welcome, details of whichare on page 6.It is an historic Methodist tradition to gathertogether in worship at the entrance of a newyear to thank God for the year gone by and todedicate ourselves to Him in the year ahead. There is no better way to usher in the new yearthan to engage in Christian fellowship andcorporate worship. On January 1st 1777 JohnWesley, one of the founders of Methodism, wrote in his Journal, “We met as usual to renewour covenant with God. It was a solemn season, wherein many found His power present to heal(their souls), and were enabled to urge their waywith strength renewed”. The word ‘solemn’refers to a sense of the holy presence of God; itdoes not mean miserable. In BiblicalChristianity joy, devotion and seriousnessalways happily coexist.Recent additions to our recorded sermonswebsite (www.soundcloud.com/penn-freemethodists)include an exposition of John6:37-40. Verse 40 reads, “And this is the will ofhim that sent me, that every one which seeththe Son, and believeth on him, may havewww.pennandtylersgreen.org.ukeverlasting life: and I will raise him up at the lastday” (John 6:40). These words of the Lord areteaching us that salvation is only through Godthe Son. There can therefore be no forgivenessof sin, no finding and truly believing in God,apart from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It issimply not possible to worship the one true Godand to bypass Christ at the same time. This verse also speaks of “the last day”, thecoming Day of Judgement when “we must allappear before the judgement seat of Christ” (2Corinthians 5:10). The atheist, the agnostic, thesophisticated liberal secularist, as well as thoseof all other faiths - all are going to have toappear before Christ to give to Him an accountof their lives. Therefore all without exceptionneed to prepare for this coming day.A further sermon recently uploaded is on thetext, 1 Kings 12, v18-24, and it reminds us of howGod judges nations in accordance with theirobedience - or otherwise - to Him. These versesdescribe the tragic division of Solomon’skingdom upon his death into two separatenations. This was God’s judgement upon anational turning away from His commandmentsand an embracing of false religion. ModernBritain cannot guarantee security and prosperityfor itself, if it abandons its historic Christianfoundations to pursue the political correctnessof the age. These sermons can be freely downloaded.Pastor Peter Simpson, www.realchristianity.orgTylers Green Methodist ChurchThis edition of Village Voice is always special, bridging as it does two years with the excitingperiods in the life of the church of Advent,Christmas and Epiphany. Apart from the SundayServices to be expected during this period, weMethodists have a rather special service inJanuary called an Annual Covenant Service. This is when, within the setting of HolyCommunion, we renew our promises to God.Sometimes we have been joined by people fromother church traditions, mainly Anglicans, whofind the service to be specially meaningful. Youcan see details of these services on page 6. Wehope to see you at any of our seasonalcelebrations. Have a Happy and PeacefulChristmas celebrating the birth of the ChristChild.
