WOODLAND& GREEN SPACESThe problem with writing VVarticles is that I have to put incopy a few weeks beforepublication so as I am writingthis the leaves are turningand falling at a great rate soby the time you read this thetrees will be bare. The changeof colour from green is rapidand frosts accelerate leaf drop.Even though it may be cold theautumn sunshine and the warm orangeand yellows bring a form of comfort.As in early spring, when the new flowers andbuds are forming, Autumn brings its own burstof activity with the arrival of the fruiting bodiesof the fungi. There are hundreds of differenttypes and to appreciate them one needs to slowdown and look closely at the ground. Forexample the Amethyst Deceiver a delicatepurple mushroom is often hidden underBracken. Others grow on trees stumps and looklike miniature cities rising from the groundwhere as others stand out boldly like the FlyAgaric when it's bright red top spotted withwhite spots. There are several different shapesand sizes apart from the traditional mushroomshape.The bracket sticking out of the side of atree or fallen log looking like a handle, or thetrumpet type pointing to the sky and even onethat is cauliflower-like. This is the Hen of theWood and can be seen growing up the base oftall conifers.One of our problems is that the presence ofedible fungi attracts foragers from far and wide.In particular one group has been seen collectingbagfuls which is unfair on regular users of thewood. They strip out everything leaving nothingso we have taken the decision to disallow thepicking of fungi to protect the ecology. It is a point that isoften missed in TV programmes on the subject.We have said goodbye to the four Britishwhite cattle who quietly grazed Farther BarnField. Thankyou to the people who helpedto check on them, it was avery successful exercise andwe plan to repeat it next year.For those who met the barrierat the bottom of the Hollowaya new gate is now in place.I'd like to say a huge thank youto the volunteers who have turned outto help us on the work parties.
