WELCOME...
...to the December 2020 / January 2021
edition of Village Voice...
Dear VV Readers,
I think it would be fair to say that 2020 has been
a challenging year for most of us, one way or
another. This time last year, it was Brexit that
dominated the headlines, this year it was Covid.
During 2020, we have all been forced to
adopt almost a new language. ‘Pandemic’,
‘Covid-19’, ‘lockdown’, ‘shielding‘, ‘social
distancing’, ‘furlough’, ‘ bubble’, ‘rule of six’.
Many of us have been forced to distance
ourselves from those we love most and have
experienced huge compromise in the way we
live our lives. Many have experienced loss or
trauma.
It’s not all been bad news. When times are
challenging, people rise to the challenge, not
only helping and supporting those in our
community who are vulnerable, but to go the
extra mile. In P&TG the community rose to the
challenge, with over 200 residents offering to
help each other during the first lockdown. and
quickly put in place support for those who
needed it. P&TG Together was formed to put in
place a communication chain, and processes for
practical help where help was needed. When the
immediate need for support was eased at the
end of the first lockdown, the P&TG Together
team turned their attention to support One Can
in Wycombe – who had identified a sharp
increase in the need for food donations
So, in the last month of 2020, where do we
find ourselves following the second November
lockdown? Our familiar and loved P&TG and
family Christmas festivities will probably be
very different this year, and we will not be able
to celebrate in the usual way, so a small group
got together to create some fun Christmas
activities, for everyone in P&TG to join in.
On the middle pages of VV you will see an
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
invitation to join in and generate some fun and
celebrate Christmas.
Let's all decorate our front gardens and
windows. Lets gather on our doorsteps on
Thuesday 17th December at 7 p.m. to 'Light up
our Village' and clap and make a noise together,
to celebrate everyone who has helped us get
through a difficult year.
Lets also extend our thoughts to those who
are unwell, caring for those who are unwell, or
have endured loss in 2020.
Remember to look out for Father Christmas
on his sleigh. He plans to visit P&TG on the
evenings of 20th, 21st and 22nd December
between 5.30pm and 7 pm each evening.
As we reach the end of 2020, the VV team
would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas
& Peaceful New Year. Cathy O'Leary VV Editor
The next VV will be Feb/March 2021 edition. We would love
to hear from you and receive copies of your Christmas Fun

AROUND
THE VILLAGES
Christmas Fun in P&TG
We hope you will take part in the Christmas Fun
festivities which will be launched on Thursday
17th December at 7 pm. when the tree on the
common will be lit. Simultaneously, all
households are invited to 'Light up our Village'
and to 'Clap and make a noise' to celebrate
everyone in our community who has helped
others during these challenging times.See the
poster in the middle of VV for details
We are also thrilled that Father Christmas is
planning an early visit to P&TG on his sleigh,
and will travel around the village on three
evenings between 5.30 - 7 p.m. on 20th, 21st
and 22nd December. Look out for his sleigh as
he travels around the village - and do come
outside to wave (adults wearing masks and
ensuring any social distancing rules are adhered
to at all times) We hope the weather is good!
Christmas on the Common 2020
Yo Ho Ho and away we go. It’s time to adapt to
a different show... Sadly, and for reasons all too
familiar of late, our traditional Carols on the
Common will have to be cancelled this year. We
DEC 2013 - JIM HAWES WITH BEST DRIVER PAUL
FROM GORDON’S BUILDERS MERCHANTS
have painstakingly been through all “the rules“,
setting out The Common in a safely spaced grid
pattern, got our humble leader Brian safely up
on a stage along with Russel and his brass
blowers. Having done all this we thought we
had cracked it! Alas, audience singing is not
allowed, not much good for a Carol Service!
Then, to be inviting a gathering of more than 6
onto the Common (we would expect 250+) was
probably not the best idea given all the current
limitations! So that’s enough of the bad news.
The good news is that our traditional Christmas
tree will be in place as it is more than capable of
self Isolating! As all you good folk pass by over
the Christmas period we intend to occasionally
strike up some festive Carols for you to enjoy
and to get you into the festive mood. In true
Carols on the Common tradition, we would also
invite you to remember loved ones, past and
present in your quieter moments around the
Tree. Without our usual collection during the
concert we shall not be handing any donations
over to this year’s nominated charity, Bucks
Carers, a very apt charity during these times.
They do have a just giving page if you would
care to look them up or check out our notice
board, next to the Tree for more news. On
behalf of all the 1977 Jubilee Committee, Brian,
Muriel, Anne, Steve and myself, may we wish
you all a very Merry Christmas and... may all
your mince pies be... fruity! Bill Sadler
Tylers Green Village
Hall
Tylers Green Village Hall has
appointed Emma Byrne as its
new manager to replace Tina
Brown, who has retired after 20
years. Emma will be at the hall
every weekday morning
(although not during lockdown)
and is the person to contact for
bookings and other inquiries.
Sadly, the hall had to close its
doors again for the latest
lockdown but will reopen as soon
4 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
as it is allowed. Because of uncertainty
surrounding the hall’s finances during these
lockdowns, the trustees decided at our autumn
meeting to hold fire on plans to build the Penn
& Tylers Green Heritage Centre on the site of
the hall’s changing rooms.
However, we do have planning permission
and hope to progress matters before too long.
Fingers crossed that by this time next year the
community will be within touching distance of
its long-awaited Heritage Centre. Peter Brown,
Secretary
P&TG Community Archive
Although progress on the proposed Penn &
Tylers Green Heritage Centre is stalled
temporarily, work is progressing on establishing
the community archive that it will contain - and
we would very much like your help.
Two residents, Madalyn Roker and Cathy
Sturrock, are forming a team to determine what
historical material there is available so it can be
catalogued. They have been in contact with the
Buckinghamshire County Archivist so that the
standard format for recording and archiving
material can be followed.
Eventually the Heritage Centre, at the village
hall, will store publicly accessible archive for
Penn and Tylers Green as well as host an
exhibition area to showcase special village
exhibitions and school projects on local issues.
Lots of old photographs, historically
important documents, village memorabilia and
fascinating artefacts are currently stored in
various spare rooms, cupboards and lofts in
people’s homes in the village. The centre will
enable all these treasures to be safely stored and
accessible in one place and available for future
generations to enjoy.
If you have such material that you would be
prepared to share, have copied or donate to the
centre, then please contact Madalyn or Cathy.
You can email them on madalynroker@hotmail.
com or cathy.sturrock@hotmail.co.uk. If you
would prefer to send a letter, write to me at

If you would like to join the archive team to
help sort out the available material and begin
the process of how to assimilate it, then please
also contact Madalyn or Cathy. Peter Brown
Chepping Wycombe Parish Council
Sadly we are still experiencing vandalism in
Ashley Park drive. During the first week of
November, fireworks were set off in the park,
causing irreparable damage to both the litter
bins and the dog poo bin. These will have to be
replaced at a cost to the Parish which ultimately
comes from the precept paid for by residents.
One bin costs at least £190 without installation
costs.
As a forewarning we are taking out more ash
trees in Kings Wood due to ash die back so very
necessary tree works. There will be more tree
works over the winter months, especially to the
trees around the common. Mostly crown lifting
but because this is in the conservation area, it is
dependent on the planning permission we have
applied for being granted.
We have also applied to the Beaconsfield and
Chepping Wye Community board to assist with
funding to fence around the play area in Ashley
Drive, which is a long-held ambition following
consultation with residents some time ago.
The Beaconsfield Rotary Club asked
permission to plant some crocus bulbs around
the bus stop area opposite JJs which we happily
gave so we look forward to a lovely display in
the spring.
Due to current restrictions our meetings are
5
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
still being held on line with public participation,
which is always welcome. If anyone would like
to join us please contact the clerk. Katrina Wood,
Chairman – Chepping Wycombe Parish Council
Penn Parish Council
Penn Parish Council has written to express its
deep alarm and concern with the implications of
the wholesale changes to the planning system
proposed by the government's white paper:
Planning for the Future. This proposal, in our
view, allows central Government to take full
control of the planning system and to impose
massive development requirements on local
plans without adequate consideration of, or
funding for, the physical and social
infrastructure to accommodate it. Local
government, parish councils and local
communities will be helpless in resisting what,
for areas like this, will be a torrent of house
building. If you share our worries about this,
please be sure to make your views known to
anyone who can influence government thinking.

Litter Picking in the Villages
We had a wonderful turn out of 25 villagers on
Sunday 27th September which meant that we
had sufficient volunteers to be able to pick all of
the litter from Common Wood Lane, Gravelly
Way, Crown Lane, Noaks Lane, Church Road,
top half of Hammersley Lane and the fields
behind the tennis/football club.
Those roads and areas produced about 100
bags of litter, a bed and mattress, huge number
of bags of dog poo (why does anyone think that
this is acceptable?) and a variety of odd objects.
6 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Most importantly the roads all looked so
much better for our effort and enabled
neighbours to meet one another and get a nice
warm fuzzy glow from improving our
environment.
We were pleased to see two of our local Penn
Parish Councillors, Mrs Jane Creasy, Penn
Councillor and Mrs Debbie Marsden, from
Knotty Green and Nicole, Webster, the Parish
Clerk who was co-organiser, as well as board
members of the Residents Society amongst their
numbers. We ranged in age from 4 to 80s and
had both 2 legs and 4, with Rex being a regular
and well-behaved attendee.
We now have litter pickers to borrow
available from Penn Parish Council offices if
you want to collect rubbish on your next walk.
Next one will be on Sunday February 21st
2021, so please make a note in your diaries to
join us and sign up for news at https://

Penn Patient Group
How do you protect our community from flu
during a pandemic? Back in August it became
evident that this years flu vaccination
programme would need to be very different.
Not only was it more imperative than ever to
vaccinate ~5000 Simpson Centre & Penn
Surgery patients, but it had to be achieved in a
Covid compliant, risk free way.
Think outside the box and that’s precisely
what the Simpson Centre & Penn Surgery had
to do. Due to the limited space in the
surgeries, a new plan was needed. A team from
the surgery and the Patient Participation Group
joined forces to devise a drive through
campaign that would minimise interaction
between clinicians and patients, whilst
delivering record numbers of jabs. The logistics
of organising such an open air vaccine
programme was enormous, time consuming but
was a challenge that the surgery embraced.
Beaconsfield Cricket Club, the perfect partner
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
After several
site visits across
Penn and

became clear that
Beaconsfield

would be the
perfect location
that could
accommodate
several thousand cars in a drive through
scenario. We are immensely grateful to the
Cricket Club for the loan of their ground and
the army of volunteers who helped in planning
and implementing and stood outside for long
periods of time in some horrendous weather to
make the clinics possible.
Working in partnership with the community
A big thank you to Bovingdons Estate Agents
who provided signage to publicise the event,
minimise traffic disruption, as well as providing
hot drinks to the volunteers and clinicians.
When the prospect of a storm loomed, Feast
stepped in to erect a huge awning to protect the
vaccinators and patients from the inclement
weather.
A huge success and model for thefuture. The
clinics have proven to be a huge success with
thousands of patients receiving their vaccination
in a smooth and seamless operation. It has been
so lovely to read all the complimentary
messages sent to the surgery or posted on social
media praising the efficient clinics. One patient
posted: ‘Just had my flu jab at the Beaconsfield

Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
Dear VV,
First of all, congratulations to you all for your
excellent magazine.
I have lived in the village since 1986 and the
Village Voice has always been a brilliant way to
keep in touch with everything that's happening
in P&TG and beyond! Thank you.
I am writing to share with VV readers a film
review written by our 12 year old grandson Ray
on the latest Christopher Nolan film. Ray lives
in Epsom but knows our village well - after all,
his Dad grew up here!
In addition to watching films, when he comes
to visit. Ray particularly loves walks in the
"horse field" (soon to be a housing estate),
Common Wood and Kingswood,
Beverly Wood Carter Walk
Ray's Review of Tenet (12A)
Tenet is a weird and
complicated story, so it's
hard not to give anything
away. It's your choice
whether you want to read
this review although I've
made sure that everything I
say about the movie
happens, or is revealed, in
the first half an hour of the movie.
My personal scores (out of 10): Depth: 9,
Story: 7, Acting: 8, Graphics: 8, CGI: 9,
Characters: 4-8, Comedy: 4, Viewer
understanding: 4, Music: 8 - Overall: 8.5
Tenet is a complicated story about something
called "Inversion", a new kind of time travel in
which people or objects can switch the
direction they flow in time. I would describe its
genre as a mix of a classic spy movie like James
Bond, as well as science fiction with the same
unsettling vibe as Inception. I don't want to
give anything away but when you watch it
remember that there are many references to
the future (or the past) hidden almost out of
view in some scenes. As well as insane scenes
that leave you scratching your head for 5
minutes, there are also car chases and fights
that’ll give your brain a break.
It's a great movie, but if you're looking for a
quick movie to watch on a Monday night, don't
even think about the two and a half hour beast
known as Tenet. Ray Wood

FREE WINTER HEALTH CHECK
Tyre Condition
The condition of your vehicle tyres is especially important when driving
in the winter. Worn, damaged or underinflated tyres are a common
cause of accidents and can lead to excessive wear and poor fuel
economy their condition is often overlooked.
Battery Testing
During the cold winter months, batteries will often suffer from failure due
to the increased burden of starting a cold engine as well as using lights
and heated screens. As the number one call out for the breakdown
services a faulty battery can easily be detected with our digital testers.
Coolant & Anti Freeze
Motorists will occasionally check their coolant levels but how often do
they check the percentage of antifreeze present in the cooling system?
A frozen engine can be very expensive and easily avoidable so we have
included an antifreeze test in our essential winter check.
Wipers & Windscreen
The colder wetter weather requires correctly working wiper blades
and a good supply of screen wash, our winter safety check includes a
thorough inspection of your wiper blades ensuring they will clear any
water from your windscreen and a screen wash top up.
Lights & Bulbs
Many modern cars have a blown bulb detection system but many don’t!
A correctly fitted bulb is essential to a good view of the road ahead as
well as allowing your vehicle to be seen by other roads users.
Oil Levels
In many cars checking the oil level is not as easy as it used to be and
topping up with the correct grade oil is not straightforward either! Our
winter safety check includes an oil check to ensure you running with the
correct amount of engine oil, as overfilling can be as bad for your engine
as not enough oil.

WOODLAND
& GREEN SPACES
Autumn is always a beautiful time in the wood
as the colours change from green to the multiple
golds and browns.
We have said goodbye to the cows and hope
they will be back next year doing a wonderful
job of grazing Farther Barn field. Keep an eye in
the spring for the wildflowers and all the
pollinating insects that visit. We are proud of the
range of butterflies that visit. Next year we will
continue to work on the field to remove the wild
parsnip and ragwort which are invasive species.
Although ragwort is the food for the Burnett
moth we are required by law to remove it as we
neighbour horse grazing.
A major tree safety survey has been carried
out and as I write, we plan to have some work
remove some trees as they are potentially
dangerous to people walking on paths. I know
that for some people it is upsetting to see a tree
go down but unfortunately we have a duty of
care to keep the wood safe. We ask people to be
careful and if anyone has any concerns to
contact us.
We have sold some of the timber laying on
the ground to an individual, who drives a blue
Land Rover. He carries a letter of authority
which is displayed normally in his windscreen.
Selling timber for firewood is one of our sources
of income. I need to remind people that removal
of timber for fires requires permission and
unauthorised removal is regarded as theft.
The fungal growth in the wood has been very
good this year, however the Fly Agaric had a
short season. For those who visited the world
they may have seen sign saying “no fungi
picking”. Foraging is often promoted but it
requires permission from the landowner. We
have a problem with gangs arriving early and
stripping the wood leaving nothing for locals so
we have had to take a tougher stance.
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
There have been a number of reports of
antisocial behaviour by teenagers in the wood
culminating in litter and fires being left burning.
We don’t have any objection to youngsters
coming in sitting quietly enjoying themselves
and socialising within the wood as long as it is
left as they find it. However we do have a
problem with dog walkers still leaving poo bags
hidden behind trees or hanging from branches.
Over the winter work is carried out by
volunteers toward the maintenance and we have
a group of enthusiastic helpers. Tasks include
cutting back the sides of parts and clearing the
grips which drain water away. We appreciate
any help people can give us so we are now
doing some work parties on some Tuesday
mornings in addition to our monthly weekend
work parties. To get information send an email
to: commonwoodvolunteer@gmail.com.
The dates of the weekend work parties are:
• December 5th & 6th, January 2nd & 3rd,
February 6th & 7th
I am pleased to announce that we were
successful in a grant application to the local
community board for £1145 towards improving
a path into the wood from Burrows Close.
Volunteers will be helping with the work which
will start when we receive the funds.
I wonder if people saw the Times article
about Common and Penn Woods highlighting
the Long Walk? Earlier this year we distributed
a copy of the latest leaflet to every recipient of
Village Voice which includes this.
During lockdown, Common Wood has been
very popular and there are many people who
have never been before. The Times article has
also brought more increasing pressure on the
wood. Do enjoy our woods, it's a great place to
'decompress' particulalry if you have to stare at
a computer screen for lengthy periods. Or
maybe go for a seasonal walk before or after
your Christmas dinner.
In the current COVID environment it may be
the only way of meeting talking to others - out
in the open air! Mike Morley

CHURCH NEWS
Holy Trinity & St Margaret's
Well at the time of writing this our churches are
closed for corporate worship but I hope that at
the time of reading they will be open again.
Either way Holy Trinity and St Margaret’s are
open each day (around 9am to 2pm) for private
prayer and we are posting an audio ‘on line’
service on our website each week (www.
holytrinityandstmargarets.co.uk).
Over the next couple of weeks we will be
videoing a Taizé service, a Christingle service
and a Crib service. These services will appear
on our website. The service of Taizé chant and
readings will go up as soon as it is ready and the
Christingle will appear on the Sunday before
Christmas (the 20th). Our Crib service will be
the one from Holy Trinity where we tell the
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
story of that first Christmas as, in addition to the
usual figures, a number of cuddly toys also
make it to the manger. This will be posted for
4pm on Christmas Eve so put the time in your
diary to settle down in front of the computer
screen with the children. We will also post our
Carols for All and a service of Lessons And
Carols in the run up to Christmas.
I have been very conscious through the last 6
months that Holy Trinity Church has been on its
spot for over 800 years now and has seen some
extraordinary events, both for good and bad
over those years. The building itself has seen
times when it has been full of people and times
when it has been dilapidated. But it is still here
as a reminder of things more permanent and
things more spiritual. Let the building remind
you, as is its intention, of the Lord’s presence
and providence in these difficult times.
It will be a strange Christmas this year (it will
be for us in the Vicarage) but the message of
Christmas is one of hope, light and salvation. I
think the words of the last verse of ‘Away in a
manger’ are a good prayer for us throughout the
year...

worship, especially if they are observing all the
necessary Covid precautions. We would argue
that such meeting together in person is a vital
contributory factor to the general well-being of
society.
For our Christmas services, please see the
special listing for churches elsewhere in VV. All
of these plans are somewhat provisional in
nature, and so please check the church website
for confirmation and more up to date details.
There is also the possibility that these Christmas
meetings will have to be carried out on Zoom.
For those who would like to join us online in
this way, and also not just at Christmas, but at
any time, please email me at revps@icloud.com
for the link. Even when we physically meet in
church, there are some people, either from other
parts of the country, or for health reasons, who
have fellowship with us in this manner.
A recent upload to our Sermon Recordings
webpage, www.soundcloud.com/penn-freemethodists,
is an address based on Exodus
25:10-30 and entitled, ‘The spiritual truths
revealed in the ark and the table of shewbread’.
These two items of sacred furniture in the Old
Testament tabernacle, and later the Temple, are
highly instructive for us in both their appearance
and how they were used.
The ark of the covenant was a golden chest
containing the Ten Commandments. It speaks to
us of God making Himself present amongst
men, as He appears in their midst above the
mercy seat, the top covering of the ark. The Old
Testament high priest would sprinkle blood
upon the mercy seat on the Day of Atonement.
This prefigures the shed of blood of Christ,
satisfying God’s justice, enabling all today, if
they repent of their sin and trust in Christ, to
have fellowship with God.
The table of shewbread, upon which fresh
loaves of bread were placed every week, speaks
to us of the believer’s need to present before
God the fruit of his labour. Whatever his or her
work, it must always be done to God’s glory.

Tylers Green Methodist Church
Under lock-down rules we closed for Sunday
Services until (we hope) Sunday 6th December.
It is not possible at the moment to be clear about
Advert or Christmas Services but as soon as we
know, we will post details on social media.
I write this on the day after Remembrance
Sunday. The streamed service organised by
Marlow Methodist Church was very special and
was led by Rev Dave Bull who is, I think, the
vicar at Flackwell Heath. Although we were not
there in person it was a very special occasion
and I really felt part of the congregation. The
first 20 minutes were taken up by ‘The Lark
Ascending’ and then a video of war graves and
poppy fields where battles had taken place. The
service itself centred around the war memorial
inside Marlow Parish Church and it was a truly
ecumenical affair. 35 wreaths were laid
including one by Lady Howe on behalf of the
Queen. One particularly poignant moment was
to see and hear primary school children who
were word perfect in reciting the first two verses
of ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae. I
commend the service to you. It can be seen at
www.facebook.com/pg/marlowmethodistchurch/
videos/ or on Marlow Methodist Church website
So until we know more about what is
happening, stay safe, and may the message of
God come to earth at Christmas fill you with joy
and peace over the festive season. Peter Stevens,
Senior Church Steward

SAVE A LIFE
This scheme, run by South Central Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust,
enables the nearest defibrillator to be identified. The Ambulance Trust
covers Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire. They deal
with over 500,000 calls a year and operate with over 1,000 Community
First Responders, some of whom operate across the High Wycombe Area.
The "Save a Life" App is available in both Android and Apple versions or can be
downloaded free of charge from the Ambulance Trust website www.scas.nhs.uk -
just scroll down to the Search box at the bottom left of the Home Page and insert the
words Save a Life. A video is available showing how to use a defibrillator and a
further search will provide information on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). You
can also google "How to do CPR" for further information, although defibrillators are
easy to use, with full instructions on each unit.
Volunteers continue to increase the number of defibrillators in the High Wycombe
area. Devices that are available on a 24 hour basis in Tylers Green are Tylers Green
Village Hall and P&TG Sports & Social Club. There are defibrillators with limited
opening hours at Tylers Green Middle School and Penn Surgery. There are also many
units in Hazlemere. For further information please email penn.consult@btinternet.com

IN MEMORY
Gilbert Knight 26th September
1931 to 23rd September 2020
Gilbert and his twin brother were born in
Leicester; he was one of five brothers and two
sisters. During his childhood he was a choirboy,
singing at Matins and Evensong every Sunday.
He went to Wyggeston Grammar School where
he enjoyed hockey and cricket. As a junior pupil
he shared the same dinner table for a year with
senior boy (Sir) David Attenborough.
The family moved to Harrow on his last day
of school and Gilbert entered the Midland Bank,
where he spent the next 40 years, posted in and
around London. His last and favourite position
was Midland’s student financial adviser at
Brunel University until retirement aged 56
years.
He moved to Tylers Green in 1960 with new
bride Brenda and soon joined P&TG cricket
Sunday XI. He was appointed treasurer, a post
he held for almost 50 years, becoming a Life
member. At 60 he passed the scorers exam and
became their scorer until the summer of 2018.
His most memorable occasion was being invited
to Lord’s to score for England v Pakistan.
During his years in P&TG he was a reader for
Beaconsfield Talking Newspaper, a Village Care
driver, community governor at Penn School and
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk

a Rennie Grove volunteer amongst many other
roles, in particular with St Margaret’s Church.
Always welcoming and friendly, with a smile
for everyone, he had boundless energy for his
love of cricket and allotment gardening,
entering produce in the annual Village Show; he
is still holder of the Jubilee Rose Bowl. He will
be remembered for his entertaining Music Hall
appearances and singing with the Women’s
Institute in the ‘80s and ‘90s. He was also a
member of Chorleywood Choral Society.
His first wife died in 1991 and five years later
he remarried and moved to St Nicholas, Penn,
where he and Marie opened their garden
annually for Village Care.
In the last two years, with his mobility
impaired, he enjoyed doing crosswords and
sudoku in the garden. Gilbert was a generous,
kind and caring gentleman, who loved life.
He is survived by his wife Marie, his son
Matthew, daughters Judith and Ruth, stepsons
Peter and Richard, and a combined total of 14
grandchildren. Marie Knight

Philip Page August 1937 to October
2020
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
He was also a season ticket holder at his
beloved Wycombe Wanderers for many seasons.
Philip was a devoted father and grandfather, a
family man, always supporting his two sons
Matthew and Russell with their sporting
exploits, mainly cricket, football and badminton.
Happily married to Jean for 58 years, he spent
the last four years of his life in Alde House,
Penn, due to failing health.
Jean, Russell and Matthew still live in the
village with 4 of Phil’s siblings living locally
alongside various nieces and nephews.
Philip, our father, sadly passed away on 29th
October 2020, aged 83. Russell and Matthew Page
Born Philip Page, the 6th of 9 children, in a
house on Tylers Green common on 15th August
1937 the family moved to Hazlemere soon after.
Philip went to school in Hazlemere, and lived
in the local area, mainly Tylers Green and Penn,
for all of his life.
He worked as a driving instructor for 35
years. After hanging up his 'driver under
instruction' plates, he moved to a couple of
different jobs and then in 1997 started working
at Amersham Hospital where after 16 years he
finally retired in 2013.
Philip had a long association with the church,
he was a choirboy at Hazlemere, then a regular
churchgoer at Penn Church for many years.
He was an active sportsman, playing cricket
and football for Penn & Tylers Green as a
young man.
He was one of the founder members of
Pennants Badminton Club circa 1970, and
played competitively until the early 1990’s, but
remained a social player until 2004 when he
suffered his second achilles tendon injury.

Dear VV,
I wanted to write to thank everyone who
supported 'Operation Christmas child', which
I wrote about in the last edition of VV
A big THANK YOU to both churches and the
community. We collected 79 boxes, which is
amazing. I thought VV readers might like to see
some pictures of the beautifully wrapped
shoeboxes. 79 children will be thrilled to get
these lovely boxes
We were a bit worried that given the current
covid situation, this might impact on the
number of boxes we would receive ( we usually
collect about 85 between the two churches)
As ever, the community rose to the
challenge, and 79 boxes is brilliant.
Thank you and best wishes,
Emma Byrne

NEWS ROUND UP
P&TG Lawn Tennis Club
I am so happy to be
able to write that we
should finish the year
with the courts open…
but in reality we have
all had to get used to
planning short term
this year haven’t we?!
Looking back on
2020, I really feel we
have been very lucky to have such a wonderful
facility as the tennis club in our village.
Once the first lockdown finished we provided
a much needed safe space for members to get
out into the fresh air and enjoy some socially
distanced exercise. It has been a wonderful
space to catch up with friends old and new.
With more people working from home this year
we have welcomed many more new members.
We are currently awaiting the contractors to
re-surface the 4th court to the same Tiger Turf
as the main 3 courts which should be done
before the New Year. Since the second
lockdown finished we are trying to complete
our internal club tournaments, and the Winter
Vets leagues will pick up again with a few
matches to reschedule. During the Christmas
Break we will run a few fun competitions.
The PTG Tennis Club wish all VV readers a
very happy holidays, and a healthy New Year.
NEW MEMBERS – We are still running the
reduced annual membership for just £69 per
adult and junior membership starting from
£17.25. Full price annual membership then
renews in April 2021. If you are interested in

Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
P&TG Cricket Club
Sponsored by Argent Wealth Management.
The Cricket Club would like to wish everyone a
as Merry a Christmas as possible in 2020. Let’s
all hope that we can spend time with friends and
family in safety once again.
Looking back over the past 10 months, we
were fortunate that from mid-July, we were able
to play cricket in relatively normality. Yes there
were hand-sanitisation breaks, no changing
rooms and no communal teas so just playing at
was a considerable victory in the circumstances!
The Cricket Club has entered its annual state
of hibernation since those long Summer days.
The sight-screens have been returned to their
winter moorings at the bottom of the field, the
pitch-covers have been dismantled and the
square itself has been ‘put the bed’ ahead of its
reawakening in the Spring of 2021. What next
season has in store, nobody knows. But if a
similar pattern emerges again next year, the
advent of warmer weather and embedded
social-distancing habits will hopefully mean that
cricket can take place for most of the season.
Here at P&TGCC, we are proud to see a
healthy mix of players of all ages representing
our League teams and we will continue to work
hard with our 80-strong Colts section in the
hope that they will graduate into the League
teams when the opportunity arises. We are
always on the lookout for new players. If you
are new to the villages or perhaps used to play
cricket and looking for an opportunity to do so
again, we would be delighted to hear from you.
Off the field, the Club is in a decent financial
position and the August Bank Holiday 6-a-side
tournament enabled us to raise funds for Charity
too. We are lucky to have so many keen
volunteers that make all this possible. Please
keep an eye out for further events taking place
in 2021 as and when the pandemic allows, and
help the Club continue to make its contribution
to the community-life of our villages. To keep

Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
SCHOOLS
NEWS ROUND UP
Tylers Green Middle School
Dear Village Voice,
Since the last edition, I am very pleased to say
that TGMS has continued to provide
uninterrupted education for our pupils. Despite
a second lockdown nationally, I am delighted
that the importance of school has been
recognised and we are able to remain open. The
role of schools in supporting families, and
especially the children, with mental health and
wellbeing has become very apparent and at TG
Middle School we have put this at the heart of
our recover, rejuvenate, relearn approach.
From the softer starts at the beginning of the
school day to the wellbeing time every day, our
curriculum is designed to allow some breathing
space for our children (and staff). With mental
health in mind (and having some fun!) on 9th
October I encouraged all of TGMS to wear
mufti, instead of school uniform to wear
something that makes you feel happy. This was
to mark World Mental Health Day (WMHD) on
Saturday 10th October. Voluntary donations
were collected for the local charity
Buckinghamshire Mind and TGMS Raised
£235.97. As a result of this fundraising we
arranged for Buckinghamshire Mind to deliver
a school assembly for our Year cohort.
Unfortunately, this was one of the events that
needed to be cancelled when lockdown 2 arose.
At TGMS, we love dressing up
and this year we took part in
Children In Need. We invited
the children and staff to
wear mufti, with a ‘bear’
theme. Various
competition and
activities were planned
which involve home, including decorating a
cupcake and designing a bear in class. We had a
selection of prizes with a Pudsey theme
awarded in our virtual assembly. Our Friday
assemblies are included on our school website,
should you wish to look.
In line with the national advice, we have not
been able to offer open days or face-to-face
parent consultations. We highly value
communication with parents and so have
offered virtual consultations this term with each
child’s class teacher through a system called
School Cloud. Feedback so far has indicated
that this has been really worthwhile.
If your child is due to move up to junior
school in September 2021, applications should
be made by parents by 15th January 2021, at the
latest. Instead of open days this year, we have
created a virtual tour and also would ask parents
to look at our website under admissions where
there is further information about joining Year 3
at TGMS. Vanessa Pinkney, Headteacher
Tylers Green First School
It was wonderful to welcome all of our children
into school full time in September and to be
re-united as a school family once more. Even
22 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
better, we welcomed our friends at Little Oaks
onto the school site and it has been very exciting
to see red jumpers and bobble hats beginning
and ending their busy day as our new
neighbours!
Our breakfast club and after school provision
is extremely popular and is a happy, tasty and
fun way to start and end our day! The children
continue to adapt and work well within our
‘new normal’ of year group bubbles, with
children having staggered playtimes and
lunchtimes and keeping their distance from
older or younger friends and siblings during the
school day. We find that a friendly wave will
suffice for now but we cannot wait until we can
all play together again.
Playtimes have also been slightly different
over the last few weeks due to long awaited and
much needed re-surfacing work on our
playground. With phase 1 of the work
complete, the playground is now ready for
phase 2 later in the year when we will add
exciting markings and equipment to our
fantastic new space.
Autumn term is always extremely busy and
this year is no exception. Our youngest children
have made the transition into Reception class
very well and they are busy enjoying their
colourful and exciting learning environment
with a new wet and messy play area.
Year 1 and 2 are working especially hard this
term and all pupils are following a ‘catch up’
curriculum to enable us to close any gaps in
learning that may have occurred due to
lockdown. Topics have included Food Glorious
Food, Marvellous Maps, Knights and Castles
and The Earth and Beyond.
The whole school took part in Black History
Month in October. Children learnt about key
events and inspirational figures within both
British and International history and produced
art, writing and role play linked to this topic.
Highlights included Windrush pictures, a
carnival and a (child size) bus linked to Rosa
Parks. It was a good opportunity to review our
curriculum and ensure that it fully reflects
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
everyone in our school and wider community,
more importantly we learnt new things and had
lots of fun!
So now we prepare for Christmas, a little
different this year, but no less important. Each
year group bubble will perform their own
Christmas production and it will be filmed for
our parents and carers to watch remotely. The
corridors at school are already full of children’s
singing and infectious songs that the staff will
be humming along to, long after term ends. In
these unusual times – some things never
change! We wish you and yours happy and
healthy festive season. Jude Talbot. Headteacher
The Village Pre-school
When we welcomed in the New Year 2020 on
Jan 1st, none of us could have predicted how
bad this year would become. Track & Trace and
no-touch head thermometers were definitely not
on our radar as a Pre-school requirement! We
were very unfortunate that 6 of our 9 staff
contracted Covid. We had to close our doors for
a while until everyone had been through the
disease and come out the other side. Fortunately,
all are recovering well and the school is open
again. We are lucky to have a great team of
staff that go above and beyond the call of duty.
On a happier note, we are looking forward to
Christmas and although our normal events
might not be happening, we are making sure
that the children have some great activities to
look forward to. Along with our ever popular
Forest school and keeping the children busy
with lots of outdoor play, we have a Christmas
party/disco planned for the last week of term.
Fundraising is difficult for all organisations at
present, but we are considering a virtual Quiz
Night that parents and staff can get involved
with to raise some much needed funds.
Looking forward to next term – we are
working on trialling hot lunches one day a week
for the children and the start up of our
woodworking sessions again. Onwards,
upwards and staying positive.
We hope that everyone has a wonderful

Christmas time this year, even though it will be
very different to one we’ve ever had before.
Stay safe! Sharon Heron
Little Oaks Nurseries
“Roll on, 2021” is the plaintive cry of the
moment. Of course we all know that as the
clock strikes midnight on 31st December,
nothing is going to magically improve, but what
we can be sure of is that the little children
amongst us will always bring a ray of sunshine
to each day. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to
work with those who smile approximately 400
times a day (as compared to an adult’s 40-50)?
Throughout this tumultuous year, the amazing
children at nursery have proved over and over
that they are both much more resilient than we
think, and that their optimistic view of the world
around them trumps all the negativity that often
otherwise prevails. We as adults have as much
to learn from them as they have from us.
Instead of focusing on what we can’t do this
season, we are happily ensconced in learning
about the Christmas story, winter traditions and
scattering plenty of sparkle as we go. There
won’t be live Nativity events this year, so we’ll
be do our best to capture those special moments
for parents in picture and film instead. Santa will
visit in the dead of night (as he should), so there
will be a gift for all. On the subject of giving,
our wonderful Little Oaks families have pushed
the boat out again this year in support of the
DASH Charity, who work with victims of
domestic abuse in the local area, and the One
Can Trust. It’s horrifying that domestic violence
and food poverty have both increased during
these lockdown months so we’re determined to
do what we can to help. Thank you to all who
participated, for your ongoing generosity and
compassion. Ruthie Pocock, Principal, 07881 737149,

Why outdoor play in winter is
good for you...!
At Little Oaks we are passionate about the
benefits of outdoor play. I thought readers might
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
be interested in the research behind its
importance
Why Outdoor Play in winter is good for
you! In Scandinavian schools and preschools,
children play outside at every opportunity. Even
in the depths of winter, children will be wrapped
up warmly and will spend the day exploring
forests, climbing moss-clad boulders or wading
in streams up to the tops of their wellies.
With proven health and development benefits,
why is it that we often don’t follow suit in the
UK? Is it habit? Is staying indoors during the
winter what our parents taught us as the way to
avoid catching a cold? During a pandemic
should we not be even more attuned than usual
to preventing the spread of germs and not
holding onto old beliefs about ‘being cold’
actually ‘causing a cold’? As if to prove a point,
in Scandinavian countries, children are found to
be fitter and more attentive, with better motor
skills and generally healthier than children in
the UK. What is the reason for this difference?
Escaping Indoor Germs. With viruses and
bacteria being more prevalent in winter it is
important to get outside into fresh air. For
children, getting outside is essential for them to
develop a strong immune system as they come
into contact with bacteria in a natural setting:
the more time they spend outdoors, the less
likely they are to develop autoimmune disorders
and allergies in the future.
Fresh Air is Healthy – Even in Winter! A
contradiction to common beliefs is that
exposure to the cold doesn’t actually cause a
cold. In fact, if dressed appropriately, fresh air is
healthy for everyone, even in the winter. When
people spend a lot of time indoors, especially
when it is overheated and poorly ventilated,
germs are recirculated and easily passed from
one person to another. That’s why outdoor play
is crucial! Not only does it allow children to
breathe fresh air and reduce the spread of
infection, but it also refreshes the mind, allows
them to burn energy and establishes a positive
understanding for year-round exercise
throughout the rest of their lives.

Outdoor Play Provides Opportunities for
Better Exercise. We all know that as adults
should be getting at least 30 minutes of exercise
a day. For children, it is advised that they should
get 60 minutes a day and this is even more
important throughout the winter. When children
don’t exercise enough, this excess energy can
affect their sleep cycle and appetite, which in
turn affects their development and ability to
maintain a healthy body weight. While exercise,
in general, regulates this and ensures a healthy
lifestyle, winter exercise, in particular, is
essential for muscle growth, strength and
gross-motor development.
Winter Play Helps Children’s Cognitive
Development too… like exercise, outdoor play
also provides opportunities for learning and
development, some of which are exclusive to
those winter months. With outdoor play
equipment or trees and branches being wet,
frozen or covered in snow, children are
challenged with finding alternatives which
stimulate their imaginations and offers different
ways to learn. Physical and cognitive challenges
such as ‘how will I pack this snow tightly to
build the shapes I want?’ or ‘how do I navigate
this slippery muddy area without losing my
footing?’ and becoming aware that they need to
adapt their behaviour in this new and less safe
environment, all ensure that they learn
important life lessons and develop vital skills.
Playing Outdoors Supplies Children with
Essential Vitamin D. While adults can take
supplements to compensate for the lack of sun
and amount they get from their diet, children
can’t. Vitamin D is even more important for
children as it promotes calcium absorption,
ensuring strong bone growth and preventing
bone deformities such as rickets. It is important
we get them as much sun exposure as possible.
With sunlight and vitamin D having a large
impact on daily mood, outdoor play in the
winter will help keep your little ones smiling!

bad weather, just the wrong clothing’! Ruthie

ASHWELLS
ARCHAEOLOGY
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
I expect many of you will have seen the
nineteen long trenches being dug on the
Ashwells site over 10 days, as marked on the
plan, to check on areas where houses are to be
built. It was a very international team, with an
Englishman, a Spaniard, and a young trainee
from Connecticut in search of the medieval and
much earlier finds that he cannot expect to find
in the USA. The digger driver was an Albanian
vet, unable to practice in England.
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Most of the trenches did not
need to go down more than a foot
or so to get below the top soil and
on to undisturbed ground. Chalk
was the predominant base to the
north and west, with clay to the
east and south. There were two
intersecting ditches in No.2, and
No.7 (photo) had a 2m plus depth
of earth backfill, perhaps
connected with the adjacent large
(probably) chalkpit. There were
one or two places they needed to
check in the north-east, but by far
the most interesting area was
close to the southern hedge-line
where there were tile and pottery
finds of a date yet to be
determined, as well as a
pronounced ditch. If the final
report Is sufficiently encouraging,
the County archaeological team
could recommend this area to be
opened up for further
investigation. Miles Green

Instructions for Making
a Wreath
The aim of our wreath making is to brighten up
doorways and also to not spend a fortune so
the challenge is to make it from recycled
materials or home grown greenery.
To make a rag wreath, you will need a wire
“frame” or an old coat hanger, a pair of scissors,
lots of material (they reckon around 2.5m)
altogether and a ruler. Please don’t buy an
“oasis” type wreath frame – they are made of
plastic and we are all trying to reduce our use
of plastic. Hobbycraft sell wire frames as do
many online stores.
For a rag wreath you need to cut your material
into 22cm strips, 3-4cm wide. Tie a piece of
ribbon or strong cotton to the wreath so you
can hang it up (or you can use the hook on the
wire framed coat hanger). If using a coat
hanger, bend it into an appropriate shape –
hearts look good as well as circles.
Now start tying. You make half a knot ie left
over right and under and pull tight. Keep
repeating and squash the knots up really close
to get a dense effect. For a picture of a rag
wreath – go to mumssavvysavings.com. There
are numerous examples and tutorials on the
internet. https://mucknbrass.com/shop/
Alternatives would be to cover the ring in
paper or indeed make one out of card and stick
coloured paper to it but bear in mind it will
need to be somewhere dry if it’s not to dissolve
into a soggy mess!
You could try attaching painted plastic (old
plastic bottles for example, painted in acrylic
paint) or you could make one from garden
greenery. To do this, secure a large potato
covered in tin foil to the frame with wire and
then stick the greenery into the spud through
the foil. There should be enough moisture in
the spud to keep it fresh.
Use your imagination!
You may decide to go one step further and
incorporate a string of fairy lights to your
wreath.
We look forward to seeing the creative and
innovative wreaths on display around the
villages!

hope you find it enjoyable...
Once at the start, all the clues in this treasure

CLUBS
& SOCIETIES
Guiding in P&TG
Seasons Greeting VV readers! I hope that when
you read this, that once again, face-to-face
meetings for all our local units have resumed. It
has been an incredibly challenging year for all!
Our Guide pack managed to meet between
September and the announcement of the second
lockdown which was great for the girls and the
perfect opportunity for their Leader, Linda
Marriott to be awarded with her 30-year service
award. Congratulations Linda on such a
wonderful achievement! The Guides even
managed to squeeze in an evening outside
making armpit fudge and smores, using tea
lights to toast their marshmallows before
sandwiching the sweet gooeyness between two
chocolate digestives. Yummy! The 1st Brownies
are yet to meet as a unit so have been working
their way through activity packs which include
crafts, colouring sheets, badge work and a
newsletter. They have
been sending in lovely pictures of what they
have done. Sadly like the Brownies, the
Kingswood Trefoil Guild have still been unable
to have their monthly meetings but have
continued to stay in touch with a newsletter
including quizzes. Several members have
managed to meet in gardens for a natter and a
cup of tea, a few members have managed to get
away on short breaks for a change of scenery
and some have been working hard in their
gardens thanks to the good weather we had in
the Summer. It has been difficult for those who
have been bereaved during this time and for
those who are caring for loved ones. They are
really looking forward to meeting with not just
their own Guild but other members in the
County in the future. Preparations are in place
and lots of fingers are being crossed that the
events go ahead. I will be keeping my fingers
crossed too. The county office sent out an email
on Bonfire Night reminding us of the old Guide
Law – ‘a guide sings and smiles under all
difficulties’, I don’t want to imply that we
should hide our struggles behind a facade, but it
reminded and encouraged me that Girlguiding
32 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
has been around for over 100 years now!
During which time Guides, Brownies and more
recently Rainbows have experienced change,
adversity and even conflict, yet we have always
come through and we will come through this,
singing and smiling together! So, I wish you all
a very Merry Christmas and a happier New
Year! Katie Barnes
P&TG Scouts
The Scout troop had enjoyed a challenging
programme of outdoor meetings up until the
second lockdown when face to face meetings
were again precluded. Since then meetings have
continued on-line. Most recently Scouts
participated in the Wycombe Homeless
Connection Big Sleepout 2020; with members
sleeping in the garden under tarpaulins, the
bathtub and at the foot of the stairs.
The Cubs have also participated in online
meetings but as so much of the scouting
experience is hands on, Zoom is just not the
same. If the restrictions on gatherings ease, we
hope to have some outdoor meetings in the New
Year, though these may be at the weekends,
rather than in the evenings, to take advantage of
the extra light and warmth!
With the recent encouraging news on
vaccines, we can start to look forward to
meeting normally next year. With our members
being a year older, a number will have moved
up to the next group so we are therefore keen to
attract new recruits into all sections. However,
in order to provide a full programme of events
we need to recruit additional adult volunteers.
Hopefully, the alternative and more flexible
ways of working engendered by the pandemic
will enable a greater number of parents / carers /
relatives to assist with group meetings on a
regular basis. For more information please see
the contact details in VV.
The Scouts are hoping to provide the annual
village postal service commencing on 5th
December with final collection being on 19th
December – see Christmas section of VV.

further announcements via the P&TGRS
website, Facebook, blog and posters in the

Evening WI
At the time of writing we are in lockdown, but
this time prepared. The committee continue
meeting each month via zoom. In October we
had a very successful zoom ATM with
approximately half the members taking part.
This was followed by a very inspirational talk
by Misba Khan from her home in Manchester
on her participation in an international all
female expedition to ski to the North Pole. Our
question and answer session of the members
with Misba was almost as long as her
presentation.
One positive that has come from the situation
caused by Covid is that we can cast our net
wider in the search for speakers as distance and
location has no limit. Some members have
taken advantage of technology to log into talks
and demonstrations produced by the WI
organisation. These are open to non members of
the WI and good value at £5. Go to www.
denman.org.hi and explore "Denman at Home".
In November our speakers subject will be
History and Jewels and in December our talk
will be on Behind the Scenes of Quiz Shows.
We have been promised that this will be
amusing and light hearted, just right for the
festive season. If anyone would like to give one
of our evening talks a go with a view of joining
our WI, send an email to hforbes@pennsoft.
co.up and Hilary will be in touch with the
details. These are held on the evening of the
second Thursday of the month.
We continue to be kept up to date what our
members are doing with a regular newsletter
and the book club continues to meet, initially in
a members garden but now that the weather and
the rules do not make that possible we use
zoom. We enjoy reading and discussing books
that go beyond our 'comfort zone '.
We hope everyone has as happy a Christmas

Morning WI
When you read this we have just starting our
second lockdown. All our big plans for our
meetings at the Golf Club have had to be
cancelled which rather left us at square one.
Having an older membership we do not have
the expertise for modern technology that other
groups are fortunate to have, however we are
going to have a speaker on Zoom for November
as it is our birthday meeting and it would be
good to do the same for our Christmas meeting.
Our AGM took place on Zoom and twenty of
our members joined in. I have been succeeded
in my presidency after six years by Christine
Nisbet. I enjoyed my time at the helm but am a
great believer in change is good. New faces new
ideas. It was lovely that we had no problem
getting a committee. We send best wishes to all
readers. Sheila Sparrow

Penn Pond Waders Golf Society
Following my last update, I am sad to report
that all golf courses were closed again for most
of November. We cancelled our planned trip to
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
Bournemouth in October since the social
restrictions would have been too onerous. Our
members are also disappointed that our popular
annual captain’s charity day at Ashridge GC has
also had to be postponed until next year. 2020
has been challenging for everyone. Fortunately,
we were able to enjoy playing golf during the
summer and early Autumn. We also managed to
host 3 PPWGS events during the year. Let us all
hope and pray that by the New Year we will
start to see this horrible virus being eradicated to
allow us all to get back to some degree of
normality again. Our planned 2021 events will
be announced in the next edition of VV.
If you are interested in joining our friendly
Society or coming along as a guest at any of our
future 2021 events, please contact our Secretary
Bob Teuton on 07973 137446. We would love
to welcome some new Waders at some of the
great golfing venues we normally play at. For

Like many other organisations it's been a
difficult year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sadly our Spring and Autumn shows had to be
cancelled along with planned trips and our
annual social.
On a more positive note, although we had to
close the barn store from March we were able to
continue selling products to our members via an
‘Order & Collect service’ from our website.
We are looking at the possibility of opening the
Barn store again from February next year, but
this will depend on the Covid restrictions in
place at that time and our ability to manage the
situation safely. If we feel unable to open
normally then we will continue with our order
& collect service and expand the list of products
on our website. We have put in orders for
potatoes, onions, shallots and seeds for next
season, so lets hope for a better year in 2021.

FIELDS IN
KING'S WOOD Part 8
So far, we have established that LiDAR images
unexpectedly reveal clear evidence of what
appear to be field boundaries in King's Wood,
that the underlying soft chalk rather than the
expected clay with flints would have allowed
early farmers to plough, that historical evidence
finds no evidence for medieval or Saxon use of
the fields and so suggests a Roman or earlier
origin. Four centuries of Roman occupation
resulted in an intensive agrarian economy and
there is abundant evidence of Romano-British
activity close to King’s Wood with the Roman
road along the Wycombe valley, two farmsteads
in Micklefield and, most recently, the possibility
of a Roman villa site in Gomm Valley near
Cock Lane.
Roman or Celtic field shapes &
sizes? In the absence of dateable finds in
King’s Wood itself, do the shape and size of the
fields offer any clue as to their age? Very little
direct evidence of Roman field systems has
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
survived in the Chilterns, but judging from
Romano-British fields elsewhere, those on the
Chiltern farms would have been roughly oblong
areas delineated by small banks and ditches and
ploughed one-way, rather than the crossploughing
of the earlier small, square, so-called
‘Celtic’ fields, which can date from the Bronze
Age (c.2000-600BC), as well as the Iron Age (c.
600BC- Roman arrival in AD43). These Celtic
fields were typically 1 acre (64m x 64m), the
amount which could then be ploughed in one
day.
The King’s Wood fields
The size of the fields varies considerably. The
two largest are rectangular and about 3½ acres.
Six fields, the majority, are squarish with
between 2 and 2½ acres and sides around a
norm of about 100m. The two smallest are
½-acre and ¾-acre squares. The direction of
slope within each field is consistent. All the
straight-edged field boundaries have the same
NE/SW alignment, taking their direction from
and incorporating parts of the longer, sinuous
lynchets which presumably preceded them.
These sinuous lynchets were created by
ploughing along the contours to form strip
lynchets, narrow flights of terraces on the
steeper slopes. There is some
evidence for more terracing than
has been shown on the map, on
the south-facing Tylers Green
side of the wood.
Thus, the fields do not fit
comfortably into what little is
known about Roman and Celtic
fields in the Chilterns, but many
of the banks are still very
considerable, even after nearly
two millenia of erosion, as
woodland, and must be the
product of immense labour over
many centuries. The Romans
would have inherited the fields
and probably adapted them to
some degree. Miles Green

VILLAGE
MEMORIES
I found myself strongly relating to
Jonathan Wheeler’s village memories
(Oct/Nov 2020 issue of VV). I am also a
native of Tylers Green and fortunately still
live in the village...
As a war time baby I grew up in West Avenue,
the cul de sac by Penn Garage. Here in the early
1950’s, the inhabitants with its 20 odd houses
predominantly worked in the furniture or
building trade, although there were two
postmen. The houses were nicely detached with
decent gardens for growing vegetables rather
than flowers. There was only one car in the
whole avenue! The road surface was terrible.
Today, a desirable place to live in. My
Grandfather A.A. Harding was a local builder
who ran his business from “Cholesbury
Cottage”, behind the bus stop half way up
Hazlemere Road with his four sons. They built a
number of these houses including the one I grew
up in.
As Jonathan noted there were Cherry trees
everywhere for the London market so there
were lots of opportunities for scrumping by us
young lads! I now live behind Hazlemere Road
where the land was full of these trees and I
understand that the plague of ants which I have
and difficult to remove are there as a result. The
boundary between Penn and Tylers Green runs
across my drive so I have a Penn address but
pay my rates to Wycombe. Interestingly, in my
deeds, I can see that the red brick semi opposite
me and next to Burrows Close had no close
buildings in 1900 and apparently has a Trig
point? I wonder who built it and set this up? I
know the owner would welcome any
information.
I was lucky enough to go to the Tylers Green
Primary school along with other mainly
workingclass lads and lasses. There were 4
teachers managing all the pupils from age 5 up
to the 11 plus exam, perhaps 80-100 pupils.
Here, little did I know that I was in the very
same class as my future wife Pauline. There was
no middle school in the early1950’s. We all had
school dinners and were routinely visited by the
Dentist which we feared given all the lurid
details of extraction. The substantial air raid
shelter was still in existence.
We also had to do the gardening, including
mowing the lawn which needed two boys to
pull the mower. Managing the headmaster’s
garden was curtailed somewhat after his prize
dahlias went missing! In the last couple of years
there I took turns in filling ink wells and pulling
aluminium caps from used milk bottles. The
first job involved dissolving ink powder in
water and then filling inkpots in each desk.
Inevitably one’s hands at least became stained in
black ink. The only way to do the second job
was to put a finger in the hole in the aluminium
cap and pull. Result cut fingers! Apart from the
pond freezing so we could slide on it, the big
event of our year was Penn fair in mid
September on the front common. We boys
couldn’t wait to see the large steam engine
“Conqueror” pull the very heavy “big horses”
equipment onto site before becoming the
working centre of it and the “Little Marvel”
steam engine used for all the donkey work.
One memorable event was the success of the
school’s football team in 1952-3 winning the
local school league and being runners up in the
cup final. We played on WycombeWanderers’
hallowed turf at Loakes Park. We lost 3.1 and I
unfortunately
was the goal
keeper! Of
course, for many
pupils their only
summer holiday
was a day trip to
the sea in a
Sunday School
Coach convey.
38 www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
I know of a couple of people, one a
close friend, who grew up in the village in the
50’s and 60’s and are still here, but I wonder
how many more there are. So many people
moved out for job opportunities and to perhaps
less expensive areas. Of course, it’s mainly
friends in your school year that you keep in
touch with. Kenny Allen arranged a School
Reunion in 2009 of retired pupils and I have a
wonderful photo taken in front of the school of
the mainly 70 or so who managed to come back
to the village. I hope when this wretched virus
has been sorted there will be an opportunity to
show it at some event so that names can be put
to faces. I know most but am unsure on some.
Of course, in the 50’s much of the village as
we now know it had not been developed,
particularly huge areas between New Road and
Hazlemere except for the main road from
Potters Cross or Muddy Bottom (as it was
known in earlier times) to Hazlemere and some
roads leading from it.
On the left of the playing fields along what is
now Ashley Drive was Kite Wood which was a
great place to play, make camps, get wood for
Bonfire Night and get up to mischief in general.
One great trick was to set light to a gorse bush
which would always burn very brightly and
fiercely. Unfortunately, one of my friends did
this on his own one Saturday afternoon, and
inevitably it got out of control and the fire
brigade had to be called out!
We were and are still lucky to live in an area
of large woods, which are available for walking
in and enjoying the outside life. with HS2 and
the M40 bypassing us. Penn Wood, now run by
www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk
Village Voice December 2020/January 2021
the Woodland Trust, is the largest and still
supports huge rhododendron trees and bushes
which are a pleasure to see in the Spring and
Summer. In earlier times this area was off limits
for the locals except for Whitsun (Spring Bank
Holiday). In later times before the Woodland
Trust became involved, contractors made a real
mess of this area by cutting down the
magnificent confers which bordered the
rhododendrons. So, if its wet, wear stout shoes
or Wellingtons to see them. I walked through
these woods many times during this Covid year
which helped lift the gloom. (If only the Penn
Street pubs had been open!). The paths are well
marked thanks to our local volunteers.
Memories from our younger days are
generally strong and as I walk around the
village the names of the inhabitants and which
shops and pubs were where always flash
through my mind. I look forward to reviewing
the 1921 census when it’s available next year.
The quickly taken 1939 census which is
available with some names redacted due to the
100 year rule is fascinating in seeing how many
inhabitants worked (or didn’t) and in which
industries and where they lived. Brian Harding
