CHILTERN AONB& NATIONALPARK STATUSDear Village Voice,Since 1965, the Chilterns have been formallyrecognised as an Area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty (AONB), protected by certain levels ofconservation. Whilst this designation hasprovided some degree of protection in theChilterns, in some instances, it has provedinsufficient in preserving the landscape to thehighest degree...Obtaining National Park status wouldenhance the protection of the Chilterns for thefuture, facilitating the development of a strategyon the conservation and development of theregion, as well as its accessibility for a wideraudience.I developed this idea some time ago andwrote to MP’s and councils in the AONB tocanvas their opinion.We had the news that the Government waslaunching a review to consider the future ofNational Parks and AONB’s, grounded on thebelief that the system of national landscapes inEngland is a key aspect of the nation’swellbeing. This was highly welcome.In September, the final report of theLandscapes Review was published. Led byJulian Glover, this report included therecognition that there is very strong merit in therequest for National Park status for the ChilternsAONB, and that the area is an ‘obvious choicefor National Park status.’As the first person to question what furtherenhancements, such as National Park status,could be obtained to maintain and protect theChilterns, I very much hope the Governmentwill progress these recommendationsimmediately, providing an extra means ofprotection to our fragile countryside.The Chilterns continue to be put under anwww.pennandtylersgreen.org.ukVillage Voice December 2019/January 2020immense strain, largely from the threat ofdevelopment. It is imperative that the necessarysafeguards are in place to enhance the Chilternslandscape and to prevent its unnecessarydestruction.The biggest threat currently facing theChilterns is the construction of HS2, which isalready permanently blighting large parts ofBuckinghamshire.Already mature trees have been felled, birdnests destroyed, and local ecosystems disrupted.Of particular concern is the rare chalkstreams within the Chilterns landscape, alreadydegrading at an alarming pace, that threaten tobe seriously damaged by HS2 constructionworks. These are precious streams and of highenvironmental significance, providing a richhabitat for wildlife and acting as an integral partto local biodiversity.Further protections on the ChilternLandscapes obtained through National Parkstatus would provide the much neededconservation required to ensure the survival anddevelopment of the landscape and ourbiodiversity.The Chilterns are an obvious candidate forreceiving National Park status; I hope theGovernment makes use of theserecommendations to enable the conservation ofthis beautiful area. Dame Cheryl Gillan MPThe difference between AONBs and NationalParks (via https://naturenet.net): AONBs andNational Parks are actually of equal importancefor landscape and scenic beauty, the difference isthat AONBs exist for the purpose of conservingand enhancing their natural beauty. NationalParks, in addition to this, have a second purpose -to promote understanding and enjoyment of thearea's special qualities by the public. Because ofthis extra (and substantial) layer of responsibilitythey have their own independent National Parkauthorities with full planning powers runningthem. There are other more subtle differences. TheNational Parks conservation and enhancementpurpose specifically includes "wildlife and culturalheritage". Nowhere in AONB legislation is culturalheritage covered.31
