Warm greetings to the Hornby High School community.
We have had yet another grand start to our year at Te kura te Huruhuru
Ao o Horomaka Hornby High School. We began with our Academic
Awards assembly at which we celebrated the achievements of our
students in 2017, with overall NCEA results improving on 2016. Some
highlights included an overall pass rate in Level 1 NCEA for Pasifika
students of 80% (an exceptional figure) and achievement for Māori boys
at NCEA Level 3 that was above national averages. As I commented last
year, these results come as a result of many factors including the quality
of the learning programmes, the hard work of staff and students, and the
support of whānau. All of these things are brought together by our focus
on our values of Commitment, Achievement, Resilience, and Respect.
These values form the basis for that strong sense of manaakitanga and
whanaungatanga, those strong positive relationships, that characterise
our kura.
Our athletics sports day was an outstanding success, with over a third
of the school entering into the top level competitive events of the day.
The sense of whanaungatanga was visible throughout the day. Students
supported each other as they competed. It wasn’t unusual to see not
only staff but also students offering positive coaching advice to others as
each sought to be and do their best.
Last week we had a NZ Police Touch team playing against a mixed Hornby
High School team before running a careers information session for senior
students. The event was a lot of fun, with the Police team including
several Hornby High School alumnae, including Detective Donny Aitken.
And then there is the school rebuild. The first buildings are on track
for practical completion around Queen’s Birthday weekend, and we
are really excited about the quality of the spaces that we will have.
We expect to move into the main building visible from Waterloo Road,
and the new gymnasium, at the end of term. As we have to vacate our
existing classroom blocks (known as A and S Blocks) for demolition
by the end of the term, we have sought and gained approval from the
Minister of Education to close the school for three additional days at the
end of term 2 to allow the shift to take place. We’ll let everyone know
the specific dates once the ‘decanting plan’ (the plan of who moves what,
where, and when) is finalised.
Please do follow my thinking on issues that are both specific to Hornby
High School and also of more general educational interest on my
Principal’s blog “Whakatauki: He waka eke noa”, after all, we are indeed
all in this together - https://whakataukihewakaekenoa.blogspot.co.nz/.
South Island Athletics Finalists
Our Academic Awards Assembly has recently celebrated the NCEA
achievements of Hornby High School students. 77 students received
awards for their achievement at NCEA level 1 and 2 in 2017. The awards
were presented by the guest speaker Daisy Lavea-Timo (Regenerate
Christchurch)
These five students are our top academic students in Year 11 for 2017.
They have done amazingly well. They have gained over 50 credits at
Excellence which means they have gained Level 1 NCEA Endorsed
with Excellence. For this, they receive the Gold Academic Badge, Red
Academic pin and the Academic Tie. Congratulations to (from left) Amber
Quigley, Iris Taramai, Lachlan Hickford, Shardey Harris and Anna Pohatu.
7 students and the Under 16 Boys relay team have qualified for the
